MANILA, Philippines – Director Joyce Bernal will make it her mission to show President Rodrigo Duterte's love for the country as he delivers his 3rd State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 23.

Bernal inspected the Batasang Pambansa plenary hall on Thursday, July 12, to study Duterte’s route in the venue, the possible camera and lighting placement, and other details for the President’s 3rd SONA. (READ: Joyce Bernal to direct Duterte's third SONA

Gusto ko sana 'yong ano, magandang sequencing ng shots niya, na in 3 shots, makukuha 'nyo na paano 'yong pagmamahal niya sa Pilipinas,” said Bernal. (READ: Duterte says his SONA will last 'not more than 35 minutes’

(I want a good sequencing of his shots, so that in just 3 shots, you will immediately get just how much he loves the Philippines.)

The director said she met with Malacañang officials for the first time on Wednesday and was informed of their requests for the SONA direction.

(They want me to show the manner how he wants to address the nation – they want the audience to know how he will speak to the nation as a mayor, as a father, and as the President. They want my direction to convey that feeling to the President when he steps inside Congress.)

How does she plan to make the 3rd SONA unique compared to the first two SONAs directed by Brillante Mendoza?

Para sa akin, para kay Presidente, let’s get into the psyche kung papaano niya ibibigay, ire-report 'yong mga nagawa niya or gagawin niya para sa Pilipinas. Gusto ko lang na medyo patriotic lang 'yong [mood ng SONA],” she said.

(For me, I want to get into the psyche of how he plans to report what he has done or what else he plans to do for the Philippines. I want the mood to be quite patriotic.)

Bernal, who had directed blockbuster movies like Gandarrapiddo: The Revenger Squad, Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo?, and the Kimmy Dora series, said she is “very honored” to direct the SONA.

“Very honored ako. First time ko. 'Di 'to pagdi-direct ng romcom. 'Di 'to pagdi-direct ng traffic. Pagdi-direct ito ng SONA. May sasabihin ang ating ama para sa atin, para sa Pilipinas,” said Bernal.

(I am very honored. This is my first time. This is not directing a romantic comedy. This is not directing traffic. This is directing the SONA. Our father has something to tell us, has something to say to the Philippines.) – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA –  HBO's fantasy epic Game of Thrones led the field for television's prestigious Primetime Emmy awards on Thursday, July 12 with a whopping 22 nominations, including one for best drama series.

The show about noble families vying for the Iron Throne faces tough competition from perennial favorite comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live and HBO stablemate Westworld with 21 nominations each.

Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale – which won the award for best drama series last year – earned 20 nods.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace, one of the few serious contenders this year that can claim to be entirely new, picked up an impressive 18 nominations.

Part of FX's American Crime Story strand from the mind of Emmys mainstay Ryan Murphy, it is the follow-up to the acclaimed The People v. O. J. Simpson (2016).

The series had been expected to dominate the acting races among the limited series and TV movies – and indeed it did, with Darren Criss, Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez and Ricky Martin all nominated.

HBO awards darling Veep was ineligible this year and its crown passed to Atlanta, the FX comedy created by and starring Donald Glover, which amassed 16 nods.

Samira Wiley, nominated for guest actress in The Handmaid's Tale, and Ryan Eggold New Amsterdam presented the nominations from the Television Academy in Los Angeles.

Leading the nominations in totals by platform were Netflix (112), leapfrogging last year's leader HBO, which scored 108. Adrift in third was NBC with 78 nods.

WATCH: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie are rival queens in ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ trailer

TRAGIC QUEEN. Saoirse Ronan plays Mary, Queen of Scots, the royal rival of Queen Elizabeth I. Screenshot from YouTube.com/FocusFeatures

MANILA, Philippines – The first trailer for Mary Queen of Scots is out, and the film looks like it’s going to be as bad-ass as it can get, with two Best Actress Oscar nominees playing two of the fiercest queens in the history of the United Kingdom.

Saoirse plays Mary, Queen of Scots, the ruler of Scotland and France, and cousin to England’s Queen Elizabeth I. The film follows Mary’s turbulent life as she reclaims the Scottish throne after being widowed by the King of France. She then unites, and then goes head to head with her powerful cousin in a rivalry complicated by the pressures to marry, to become a mother, and to be a queen in a time of kings.

The trailer tells us that the film has all the elements of a juicy historical drama: lush period costumes, court dances, fully-armored battle scenes, high-stakes political conflict, and steamy candlelit love scenes.

But the film promises more than that. With two women – and their uncompromising wills – at the center of the story, it may just be that slice of history that we need to be told today.

NEW MUSIC. IV of Spades releases 'In My Prison.' Screenshot from IV of Spades Official YouTube account

MANILA, Philippines – IV of Spades has released a new song and an accompanying music video – their first since original vocalist Unique Salonga left the band in May.

The band shared links to the song, “In My Prison,” and its music video on their official Facebook page on Friday, July 13.

The video reintroduces the band's remaining members: Zild Benitez, Blaster Silonga, and Badjao de Castro.

Directed by Raymond Dacones, it takes IV of Spades’ 70s-disco aesthetic and wraps it up in baroque details, for a dark, creepy feel. At one point in the video, Zild, who is featured as the main vocalist in the song, is grabbed violently by figures clad in black lace.

The lyrics too evoke a feeling of panic: “Save me/ Somebody wants to take me/ Kill me/ So I have a reason to live,” Zild sings in the first stanza.

Aside from the video, the song is available for streaming on Spotify. – Rappler.com

According to a report form the Eastern Police District, Mendez was arrested at the BSA Twin Tower Basement parking in Mandaluyong City.

Joint elements from the police intelligence, motorcycle riders, and mobile patrol units, as well as the women and children’s protection desk, conducted the operation.

MANILA, Philippines – Korean stars Jung Joon-young and Yook Sung-jae are in Manila to share a glimpse of what it's like to be part of the K-pop industry that many Filipino fans love.

The two singers talked about the influence and popularity of K-pop in the country during the launch of Viu original reality show Hello K-Idol on Friday, July 13.

"I'm happy that Korean culture is being spread worldwide," Joon-young of 2 Days & 1 Night fame said in Korean. According to the solo artist, he finds it "amazing" that a K-pop program such as Hello K-Idol will happen in the Philippines instead of in South Korea. Joon-young lived in the Philippines for a couple of years.

Sung-jae, one of the vocalists of K-pop group BTOB, also takes pride in being part of an industry whose influence has spread not only in Asia but all over the world.

But what qualities should trainees have to succeed in the K-pop industry?

For Joon-young, who first gained recognition as participant of South Korean reality show Superstar K4, it's basic for a K-pop artist to have talent.

"But the fact that you don't give up will be the most important thing as you go through the journey," he quickly added.

Sung-jae, meanwhile, believes that it's important for trainees to learn from their "sunbae" or seniors as well as mentors.

Filmmaker and Globe Studios head Quark Henares said both Joon-young and Sung-jae will be "mentors" of Hello K-Idol finalists – 10 Filipino trainees who will go through a 10-week challenge to hone their talents in singing, dancing, performing, styling, and teamwork.

"This one is more like to guide them to the path of K-idolhood," Henares explained.

Both Joon-young and Sung-jae believe it's possible for Filipinos to become K-pop idols.

"I think it's possible since there are a lot of foreigners who are currently Korean artists, working in Korea...so I think there's no problem with Filipinos being K-pop artists," Joon-young said in Korean.

Sung-jae agreed, "I have the same opinion, because...a lot of Filipinos are really good at singing, at dancing."

Hello K-Idol will stream from July to September exclusively on Viu. – Rappler.com

Online reality show hopes to train the next Filipino K-pop idol

HELLO K-IDOL. The 10 Filipino trainees pose with Korean singers Jung Joon-young and Yook Sung-jae at the launch of Hello K-Idol on Friday, July 13. Rappler screenshot

MANILA, Philippines – For years, the Korean pop industry has been open to foreigners: there's 2PM's Nichkhun (Thai-American), BLACKPINK's Lisa (Thai), EXO's Lay (Chinese), TWICE's Momo, Sana, and Mina (Japanese) – the list goes on.

More recently, Filipino-American Kriesha Chu debuted as a solo artist after participating in South Korean reality show K-pop Star.

Will the next Filipino K-pop idol be a product of another reality show?

That's the vision of Viu original reality show Hello K-Idol, which will run from July to September and will feature 10 male finalists aspiring to be a K-pop idol.

The Filipino trainees will go through a 10-week challenge in the Philippines to hone their talents in singing, dancing, performing, styling, and teamwork.

They will be training under singers Morissette Amon and Jinho Bae, as well as dancer Dasuri Choi. Korean singers Jung Joon-young and Yook Sung-jae will also be the show's "mentors," according to Globe Studios head Quark Henares.

"It's a whole journey, it's anything from how to dance and sing correctly, but it's not just that. It's how to style correctly, how to walk correctly, and of course no one can teach you that but the real K-idols," he said during the launch of the show on Friday, July 13.

The final winner will "learn K-pop vocal and dance at a prestigious entertainment talent school in Korea" for 4 months.

Viu Philippines Country Manager Arianne Kader-Cu said "there's always a chance" for the show's winner to debut in Korea. To debut in the K-pop world means to be officially launched as an act.

"That's the point and the beauty about a reality show – you really don't know what's going to happen. I think the great thing about the contestants that Quark and the Viu team chose is that they really have the drive. Hopefully one day they will be in a Korean group – that's our vision," she added.

During the launch, BTOB member Sung-jae said a lot of Filipinos are really good at singing and dancing. Joon-young, a solo artist, said there's no problem with Filipinos being K-pop artists since a lot of foreigners are already working as artists in Korea.

On Friday, Cu also explained why the first season of Hello K-Idol features only male finalists.

"Facebook reports about 15 million Filipinos are interested in K-entertainment. On our platform alone, mostly 75% of them are females, so we thought it would be a great time to kick off this show format with a male band because of the female craze," she said.

Henares said they also want to do something with female aspirants "soon, maybe after this one." – Rappler.com

Scarlett Johansson withdraws from trans role following backlash

LOS ANGELES, USA – Scarlett Johansson has quit an upcoming movie role as a transgender criminal following an angry backlash against her casting, she revealed in an interview reported widely in US media on July 13.

The actress was to have taken the lead part in Rub and Tug, the story of Dante "Tex" Gill, a massage parlor operator and pimp who became a major crime figure in the 1970s and 80s. Born Lois Jean Gill, he identified as male.

"In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project," the 33-year-old told Out Magazine

"Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I've learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive."

When Johansson's casting was announced, she and the project were berated on social media for not handing someone from the community the opportunity, with trans actresses Trace Lysette and Jamie Clayton leading the charge.

Johansson's representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but have previously released a statement pointing out that Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman have all made successes of transgender roles.

"While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante's story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film," Johansson added.

The actress cited figures from GLAAD – formerly the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation – showing LGBTQ characters dropped 40 percent in 2017 from the previous year, with no trans characters in major studio releases.

There was no immediate word on the effect of Johansson's exit on the production schedule for Rub and Tug.

Members of the online transgender community were largely supportive, praising the actress for making a stand but highlighting the long path to equality that must still be negotiated.

"Thank you Scarlett Johansson for pulling out of Rub and Tug... Now the real work begins," tweeted civil rights activist and media personality Ashlee Marie Preston.

"This has been a long time coming Hollywood. But the trans community is ready if you are." – Rappler.com

The 6-season television series ran on Britain's ITV from 2010 to 2015, and in the United States on PBS' Masterpiece.

In the United States, it won 3 Golden Globes, 15 primetime Emmy Awards and commanded a rave following, becoming the most nominated non-US television show in the history of the Emmys.

It followed the lives of the Crawley family, headed by the Earl of Grantham, and their servants as they navigate changing times from the Edwardian heyday of the British aristocracy, to World War I and the roaring 1920s.

The original principal cast, including Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville, are set to reprise their roles in the big-screen production, Hollywood entertainment news website Deadline reported.

Creator Julian Fellowes has written the screenplay and will co-produce, it added. Highclere Castle in England is expected to return as the family seat.

Downton Abbey became one of Britain's biggest ever drama exports with an international audience of around 120 million.

The television series ended in 1926 with daughter Edith Crawley marrying and outranking the rest of the family, sister Mary expecting a second child, and butler and lady's maid Bates and Anna welcoming their first.

New York-based company Focus Features has set production for the cinema release with British-based Carnival Films.

"It was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production," said Gareth Neame, Carnival's executive chairman.

"We're thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen," said Focus chairman Peter Kujawski.

No plot twists have yet been revealed and no release date yet announced. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Meteor Garden fans' hearts fluttered when Netflix announced that it would be streaming the show's 2018 remake on July 13, but viewers in the Philippines will have to wait just a bit longer – and tune in elsewhere – to watch the much-awaited series.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/87Q8hTratnM" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

While the series can already be viewed on Netflix globally, it will not be available in the Philippines, where ABS-CBN holds the rights to air the show.

ABS-CBN has not yet announced a premiere date, though it released a teaser trailer on July 13, saying only that the show will premiere on the channel “soon.”

The network also held rights for the original Meteor Garden, which started airing in the Philippines in 2003, and became a cult favorite among Filipino viewers.

The remake, which was announced in late 2017, stars Shen Yue as Shan Cai, Dylan Wang as Dao Ming Si, Darren Chen as Hua Ze Lei, Connor Leong as Mei Zuo, and Caesar Wu as Xi Men. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – #BabaeAko, the movement against the sexist behavior of President Rodrigo Duterte, has a new supporter: Rosario Dawson.

Rosario is an American actress who has appeared in various films and television shows such as Seven Pounds, Rent, and Jane the Virgin. She currently plays Claire Temple in Netflix's Marvel shows, including Luke Cage, The Defenders, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil.

Rosario is also a political activist and champion for social equality. In 2004, she co-founded the non-profit organization Voto Latino – an organization that works to raise political awareness and engagement among young Latin American voters, as well as address issues that impact the US Latino community, like immigration and healthcare.

In a Friday, July 13 post, the BabaeAko Facebook page shared a photo of the actress holding up a piece of paper with the hashtags #BabaeAko, #AMaSONA, and #RiseResistUnite written on it.

Another photo showed Rosario with Gabriela Secretary General Joms Salvador.

{source}<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3D245974405999269%26id%3D223897464873630&width=500" width="500" height="509" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe>{/source}

According to the post, Joms talked to Rosario about "the reason why this social media campaign has resonated to a broad spectrum of Filipinas (and decent Filipino men) here and abroad."

The #BabaeAko movement was started in May by a network of Filipino activists in response to the misogynistic culture perpetuated by Duterte's rape jokes and sexist behavior. As part of the campaign, women, including former social welfare secretary Judy Taguiwalo, performance artist Mae Paner, and journalist Inday Espina-Varona, posted video messages calling out not only the culture of misogyny but also the culture of impunity under the Duterte regime.

What started out as a social media campaign grew into a protest movement that was recognized by Time magazine as among the 25 "Most Influential People on the Internet."

The movement is currently gearing up for #AMaSONA, an anti-misogyny protest that will be held on the day of Duterte's 3rd State of the Nation Address (SONA). – Rappler.com

'I Love You, Hater' review: Hard to love, harder to hate

COMPETITION. Kris Aquino teams up with Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto in 'I Love You, Hater.' All screenshots from YouTube/ABS CBN Star Cinema

There is one scene in Giselle Andres’ I Love You, Hater that makes the film almost worth all of its very many problems.

Noteworthy for several reasons

Zoey (Julia Barretto), clearly ecstatic, is in front of Joko (Joshua Garcia), her rival of several weeks for the position of assistant to media magnate Sasha (Kris Aquino).

She tells Joko of a sacrifice (which involved her lying to Sasha) and it weirdly does not result in the loving gratitude that she might have expected. Joko, dumbfounded because he knows how Zoey values honesty, begs her to tell him why she did it.

Out of perhaps the whole absurdity and foolishness of her feelings, Zoey starts to cry and confesses of her love for him despite knowing that he will never love her back because he is gay.

However, Joko is not gay.

He has been pretending to be gay just to have a stab at the lucrative job under Sasha. He also loves Zoey, and admits it, along with the fact that his being gay is all a ruse. Zoey doesn’t take it lightly, and her tears of self-pity quickly turn into tears of rage because of the betrayal of someone she has gotten to love to the point of embarrassing herself.

The scene is noteworthy for several reasons.

The scene allows Barretto, who has proven herself in previous films as a very fine actress, an opportunity to churn out a nuanced performance, one that is understanding of the subtle differences of various emotions conveyed by the act of crying.

Barretto’s performance however wouldn’t have been possible if the narrative, which is unabashedly convoluted right from the get go, didn’t unspool so relentlessly to reach such an emotionally affecting and surprisingly authentic confrontation between the two stunted lovers.

MEDIA BUSINESSWOMAN. Sasha (Kris Aquino) is a businesswoman looking for an assistant.

Creature of formula

At least at that point of the movie, it works.

It almost seemed that its roundabout way of tackling the value of truth within the realm of relationships, profession, and even sexuality makes complete sense. It almost seemed that some of its brushes with insensitivity when it comes to portraying gays or their manners of coming out had some more reason to them than an attempt at amplifying either drama or comedy, which the film commits to quite feverously. The film is funny when it needs to be. It shifts to romance or drama with ease and mechanicality.

In fact, it almost seemed that the film was making a real statement and not just some palatable moralism that has always been tied to these commercial love stories.

There certainly are surprising loose ends that provoke. Sideplots, like the ones involving Zoey’s estranged father or Sasha’s ex-husband, are never granted the resolutions expected from rom-coms that ambition happy endings for everyone.

This can be interpreted to point to a more progressive direction for the genre considering that the repercussions of the loose ends are to portray women realizing their worth despite the neglect of the men in their lives.

I Love You, Hater is still a creature of formula.

It avoids cutting deeper than it should. It dwells on easily recognizable dilemmas and all the loud feelings that come with them. This isn’t bad at all, but its being simplistic does lead to several problems, most especially if its conceit is grounded on issues that require a little bit more sensitivity.

PROBLEM? Joshua Garcia pretends to be gay to get the assistant job offered by Sasha.

Oozing with charm

With all its problems, I Love You, Hater is a film that is hard to love.

Thankfully, it is also oozing with charm, making it a film that is harder to hate. – Rappler.com

‘Skyscraper’ review: Low-brow high-rise action

DANGER. Dwayne Johnson stars in 'Skyscraper.' All screenshots from YouTube/Universal Pictures

“This is stupid.”

Those were the exact words security expert Will Sawyer (Johnson) tells himself before crawling out of a broken window on top of a fictional 240-story skyscraper with just duct tape on his hands and rope tied to his foot for safety.

Will Sawyer is correct.

The plane is absolutely stupid, one that will only be done if forced by the gravest circumstance. It's precisely the situation Sawyer, whose daughter is being held hostage by a Scandinavian thug (Roland Moller), is currently in.

This is stupid

“This is stupid.”

Those are the exact words I imagine writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber muttering to himself when he was both writing the unabashedly absurd screenplay for Skyscraperand directing Johnson (who is quite empathic despite his imposing stature) to commit to all the film’s ludicrous stunts.

The results are all fine.

There is a certain giddiness to all of the film’s disregard of physics and psychology just to churn out cheap and easy thrills. The film thrives in its parade of action-laden spectacles of the lowest brow set in the highest of locations.

The only concern here is that the film doesn’t go stupid enough. It is a romp that doesn’t really require much thinking to be enjoyed but given that there is already a clear trajectory to go all out, it just doesn’t reach far enough.

For all the film’s attempts at pushing the limits when it comes to driving Johnson to the most incredulous of feats, it never realizes the potential for humor. Sure, Skyscraper is sometimes funny.

However, its comedic reach only goes as far as the few quips that Johnson is allowed to sputter. Believe it or not, the film has an air of seriousness even amidst all its elements that test the boundaries of good taste.

After a string of brawls, gunfights, and explosions that lack that much needed levity, it starts getting exhausting to slog through the pandemonium.

FORMER SOLDIER. Security expert Will Sawyer (Johnson) finds himself trying to save his family from a group of terrorists.

Just another action star

It is much more a wasted opportunity just because Johnson is an actor who is most charismatic when he isn’t taking himself too seriously.

Here, he is just another action star, stifled from carving a more memorable character out of Will Sawyer. There are very many wasted opportunities here. Thurber has written his protagonist to be a hero who lacks a particular limb that is essential when it comes to what he needs to do to save the day.

Like Zatoichi, the blind samurai, or Fang Kang, the one-armed swordsman, Will Sawyer misses a leg. This detail could have been a diving board for personality-building scenes but instead, it is turned into just an aggravating factor to all the incredulity the film bathes itself with.

Clearly, Skyscraper wants to be a rollercoaster ride. The only problem is that this rollercoaster ride only has one trajectory and it gets redundant very quickly.

Senseless thrills

The problem of Thurber’s movie is not that it’s stupid.

Sometimes, there is a discreet pleasure in just allowing your brain to go numb with all the senseless thrills. However, Skyscraper has spectacles that lack variety and color. It is all fire without the pop. It is all long jumps without the purposeful landing. – Rappler.com

WATCH: Benedict Cumberbatch as 'The Grinch' plots to do mean things in style

GRUMPY. The Grinch (Benedict Cumberbatch) plans to steal Christmas but will he be able to do it? Photo courtesy of Columbia Pictures

MANILA, Philippines – The first trailer of The Grinch has been released, giving us a sneak peak at how the iconic character will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

In it, we watch how Max the dog helps his master prepare for yet another miserable and despicable day ahead – he even chooses the "very miserable" pair of pants for the Grinch.

The Grinch then goes around Who-ville and does (arguably unecessary) deed to people shopping.

The latest take on the classic tale tells a familiar plot: of the titular character, the Grunch, who lives a solitary life on Mt. Crumpet with Max. Annoyed at the noise Who-ville generates during big celebrations, the Grinch decides to steal Christmas. He dresses up at no less than Santa Claus.

The plot also involves Cindy-Lou Who, who wants to thank Santa Claus for helping her overworker single mother. Cindy-Lou and the Grinch's plans inevitably collide. Will the Grinch succeed in his plan to stop the holiday cheers?

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his roles as the titular character in the TV series Sherlock Holmes and Marvel movie Doctor Strange, lends his voice as the Grinch.

Based on the holiday classic by Dr. Seuss, The Grinch opens in the Philippines on November 28. – Rappler.com
