MANILA, Philippines – There aren't a lot of actors who can convincingly square off with both Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson on-screen, but Idris Elba is one of them.

According to Variety, the British actor is reportedly in final talks to play villain opposite Statham and Johnson in the upcoming Fast and Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw.

The film will see the revival of two beloved characters from the Fast series: special agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson), and military man-turned-mercenary Deckard Shaw (Statham).

While the two characters were once at odds, the most recent movie in the series, The Fate of the Furious, sees a truce between the two, and the upcoming film will reportedly see them banding together against Elba's character.

Elba briefly appeared in Avengers: Infinity War as a decidedly good guy Heimdall, but he does have villainous acting credits, including his role as Krall in Star Trek Beyond, and his voice role as Shere Khan in Jungle Book.

The spinoff will be directed by Deadpool 2's David Leitch, with Fast and Furious' Chris Morgan writing the script.

PARIS, France– The wife of Roman Polanski, French actress Emmanuelle Seigner, said Sunday, July 8, she had rejected an invitation to join the body that awards the Oscars in protest at its decision to expel her husband over his historic statutory rape conviction in the US.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences last month announced that it had swelled its ranks by more than 900 members, as part of its drive for a more inclusive Hollywood.

The Oscar-awarding body announces a round of invitations every year, and has been bolstering its ethnic and female representation following criticism over its predominantly white, male membership.

But in an open letter published by France's Journal du Dimanche, Seigner said: "How can I pretend to ignore that the Academy a few weeks ago kicked out my husband, Roman Polanski, to satisfy the zeitgeist. The same Academy that rewarded him with the Oscar for best director for The Pianist in 2003. Curious amnesia!

"This Academy probably thinks that I am an actress sufficiently arriviste, without character to forget that she has been married for 29 years to one of the greatest directors," she added.

The 84-year-old director of Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown was accused of drugging a 13-year-old girl before raping her at the film star Jack Nicholson's house in Los Angeles in 1977.

He admitted statutory rape after a number of more serious charges were dropped, and spent 48 days in custody to undergo psychiatric evaluation before being released.

According to court documents, Polanski was promised by the judge overseeing the case that the seven weeks he spent in custody would be the only time he would serve.

But in 1978, convinced the judge was going to scrap his plea deal and send him to prison – possibly for decades – to avoid a public backlash, he left for France.

Manila will be the group's final stop of their concert series.

The group became popular after winning Mnet's show Produce 101 in June 2017. They then released their debut EP 1X1=1 (TO BE ONE), with the video "Energetic."

Coming at the heels of the enormity of scope of Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War(2018), Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and the Wasp feels modest and minuscule, which is surprisingly a very good thing.

Comedy, caper and camp

Given that the trajectory of superhero movies seems to be to be bigger, brasher and bolder than the films that came before, there is a curious sense of ambition in the way Ant-Man and the Wasp opts for restraint.

It is less a superhero film and more of a meshing of comedy, caper and camp. Simply put, in a marketplace where films about superhero are beginning to show signs of weariness, Reed’s film plays the role of a refreshing cup of sherbet.

It’s mostly an unsubstantial part of the meal, but it readies you for Marvel’s plan of serving probably more of the same uproarious spectacle. While there are obvious traces of the film being part of Marvel’s grand multiverse, Reed’s film feels very contained within its world of pronounced silliness and absurdity.

Its band of heroes-on-the-run do not have missions to save the world. Their goal is much closer to home, to rescue Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), wife of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), mother of Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), from the quantum realm. Less stately and more pedestrian

The path towards the heartwarming reunion of the Pym family is also less stately and more pedestrian. (READ: Kevin Feige: Ant-Man, Wasp 'very important' in Avengers 4)

Aside from the constant shrinking and growing, the film relies predominantly on real world physics and on the hilly and curvy road networks of San Francisco to support its earthbound thrills. There are no cities being leveled or powerful overlords with misguided principles they want to impose upon the world.

It mostly involves Scott, Janet and Hank driving around a van, being chased either by Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), a lady who can phase through objects and is desperate to find a cure for her pain, an unscrupulous businessman (Walton Goggins) and the FBI.

What remains are extravagantly choreographed car chases and unabashed drollery, which Reed does extremely well. Ant-Man and the Wasppushes forward by sheer humor and audacity. It works because its heart knows that its place is in comedy, not in grand expositions about the state of the world or in spectacular chaos and destruction.

Even its most bombastic action sequences are driven by slapstick and visual wit.

The film is exceptional at presenting racial diversity, portraying San Francisco more of the melting pot of color, accents and cultural nuances rather than just another picturesque city to be decimated by super-powered squabbles. There is a real sense of the film attempting to be located in a specific place on Earth rather than just a random city.

Saturday morning cartoon

Ant-Man and the Wasp is adamantly efficient within the limits it sets for itself. In turn, it also becomes adamantly entertaining, in a Saturday morning cartoon kind of way.  – Rappler.com

NEW YORK, USA – Trouble-prone pop star Justin Bieber will be a married man after popping the question to model Hailey Baldwin whom he has dated for one month, reports said on Sunday, July 8.

The 24-year-old Canadian heartthrob, who has become better known for his off-stage antics, proposed to the 21-year-old over dinner Saturday night at a restaurant in The Bahamas, the celebrity news site TMZ said.

The site quoted witnesses at the restaurant, who said that Bieber's security team asked them all to put their phones away for the proposal.

A representative for Bieber did not comment but relatives of the couple suggested that the news was true.

"Proud is an understatement! Excited for the next chapter!" the singer's father Jeremy Bieber wrote on Instagram with a picture of his son.

His mother, Pattie Mallette, simply tweeted: "Love Love Love Love Love Love Love."

Hailey Baldwin, a model who has taken small acting roles, is the daughter of "The Usual Suspects" actor Stephen Baldwin and niece of Alec Baldwin, the "30 Rock" star and nemesis impersonator of US President Donald Trump. The model's mother is from Brazil.

Bieber has been romantically linked with many famous young women including fellow pop singer Selena Gomez and model Sofia Richie. He was first seen dating Baldwin a month ago.

Bieber, while remaining a top-selling pop star, became a fixture of tabloids over incidents including racing a car through Miami and throwing eggs at a neighbor's house in Los Angeles.

MANILA, Philippines – Singer Regine Velasquez asked President Rodrigo Duterte to stop critcizing God in his speeches.

In a series of tweets on Saturday, July 7, Regine, known as "Asia's Songbird," said that while she normally doesn't talk politics, she couldn't help but feel strongly about recent events. 

"Nalulungkot na talaga ako, Hindi ako mahilig makialam sa mga ganito pero Mr President, kuha na po namin na hindi kayo naniniwala kay GOD," she tweeted. 

(I'm sad. I do not really comment on these kinds of things but Mr President, we get the point – you do not believe in God.)

"Pero marami po sa amin ang naniniwala sa kanya. Hindi naman po namumulitika si God kaya wag na po natin sya idamay," she added.

On June 22, Duterte ranted about God, calling him "stupid" after the former Davao City mayor narrated the story of Adam and Eve. His remarks earned the ire of many Christian groups, who called him out for mocking God. 

Actress Rita Avila was one of the many personalites who had called Duterte out for his tirades. Agot Isidro and Jim Paredes, known critics of Duterte, have also called out the President for his remarks.

LOS ANGELES, USA – Comic book legend Stan Lee has terminated a $1 billion lawsuit alleging that the entertainment company he co-founded had tricked him into signing away his image rights.

The complaint, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in May, accused POW! Entertainment CEO Shane Duffy and co-founder Gill Champion of failing to disclose fully to Lee details of the firm's 2017 sale to Camsing International.

The entertainment icon contended that they took advantage of him at a time when he was despondent over the death of his wife Joan and suffering from macular degeneration, a condition affecting the eyes.

"The whole thing has been confusing to everyone, including myself and the fans, but I am now happy to be surrounded by those who want the best for me," Lee said in statement circulated among US media.

"I am thrilled to put the lawsuit behind me, get back to business with my friends and colleagues at POW! and launch the next wave of amazing characters and stories!"

The announcement comes amid a struggle over Lee's fortune, estimated at more than $50 million, and concerns about his mental and physical health since Joan's death last year.

The 95-year-old co-creator of many superhero characters, including Black Panther and Spider-Man, alleged that he was duped into signing a fraudulent agreement that gave POW! exclusive rights to his name, identity and likeness.

According to the lawsuit, Lee was unable to read the document due to his eye condition, and doesn't remember anyone reading it to him, suggesting that his signature may have been forged, copied or induced.

"In addition, POW! took control of Lee's personal social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, thereby impersonating Lee before a combined 15 million followers worldwide," the complaint read.

There was no immediate response from POW! Entertainment to the termination and Lee's representatives were not available, but Duffy said in a statement published by the London-based Guardian newspaper that he was "ecstatic" over the demise of the "ill-founded" suit.

"We recently got together with Stan to discuss our path forward and we and Camsing are pleased with his overwhelmingly enthusiastic reaction," he added.

In mid-June a Los Angeles court issued a temporary restraining order against Keya Morgan, a man who had been taking care of Lee and has denied accusations of elder abuse.

The order has since been dismissed following confusion in court over who was supposed to be representing the comic book icon.

NEW YORK, USA  – Actress Robin Wright says she and other cast members on the hit series House of Cards were "surprised" by allegations of sexual assault against co-star Kevin Spacey.

"We were all surprised of course, ultimately saddened," Wright said in an interview with NBC broadcast on Monday, July 9, describing her relationship with Spacey as "professional."

Spacey, a two-time Oscar winner, has been accused of attempting to rape a teenage boy and of a pattern of harassment towards younger, male colleagues – including on the set of House of Cards.

"We were co-workers, we never socialized outside of work," said the actress. "Ours was a respectful, professional relationship, he was so great with me, he was never disrespectful to me."

All the sexual misconduct accusations levelled so far against Spacey, who turns 59 later this month, have come from men.

The Australian actor Guy Pearce, who starred alongside Spacey in the 1997 thriller L.A. Confidential, described him as a "handsy guy" who made him feel uncomfortable. "Thankfully I was 29, and not 14," he said.

Spacey has not been officially charged by police with any crime, although investigations into his behavior have been launched from London, where Spacey directed the Old Vic theater from 2004-2015, to Los Angeles and Nantucket, a coastal resort near Boston.

His acting career ground to a halt as a slew of accusations emerged in the wake of the #MeToo movement, triggered by a number of prominent women accusing Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual abuse.

ROME, Italy –  Hollywood star George Clooney was treated in hospital on Tuesday, July 10 for minor injuries after a scooter accident in Sardinia, the Italian news agency AGI reported.

The Ocean's Eleven actor hurt his leg when a Mercedes car allegedly turned  without giving right of way and collided with his scooter, AGI said.

Clooney, 57, was reportedly thrown from his two-wheeler onto the windscreen of the vehicle. 

The crash took place in Costa Corallina in the island's northeast at around 8am (0600 GMT).

The car driver called an ambulance which took Clooney to hospital, AGI added. 

The American is on location in Sardinia to film a new mini-series Catch 22.

AGI said part of the road was closed following the incident.

Police told Agence France-Presse they were unable to comment while operations related to the crash were still underway. 

AGI reported that Clooney was discharged from hospital later in the morning and advised to rest for a few days. – Rappler.com

The two were married in July 2005 at television host Boy Abunda's house. They have a son, Bimby, who is now 11. 

After 5 years of marriage, the two separated. Their annulment was finalized in 2012.

Kris and James' relationship has been tricky. Back in April, it made headlines after Kris called James out for the way he was treating their son.

MANILA, Philippines – The ladies of Litchfield are back for season 6 of Orange is the New Black and if the trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to be a tough ride for all of them.

Based on the trailer Litchfield maximum security gets new inmates: Red, Gloria, Nicky, Frieda, Cindy, Suzanne, Taystee, Blanca, and Piper – who were all in the bunker that was blown up at the end of season 5.

In Litchfield max, the women face a whole new set of challenges, including forming new alliances and navigating the prison’s new hierarchy – which is apparently based on the color of their uniforms.

The women also question the mysterious absence of Alex – the only inmate from the bunker who isn't with them – while being questioned themselves by authorities over last season's prison riot.

MANILA, Philippines – If the bruises are any indication, the action film Buy Bust is clearly the most physical actress Anne Curtis has done in her career 

In a press conference on Tuesday, July 10, the actress said the bruises weren't the end of it – she was also punched in the face (accidentally) while going a scene. 

"Yes, I was physically injured during shooting this film, pero, alam mo 'yun, masaya siya. Okay lang (but you it was fun. It was okay)," she said. 

In Buy Bust, Anne plays a Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) agent who is part of an operation to raid a drug den. Her team finds itself in danger after they were apparently betrayed and set-up. PDEA is the country's lead law enforcement agency in all anti-illegal drug operations.

Anne herself did a lot of the stunts in the film including the intense chase scenes.

"I underwent heavy training for 6 months - martial arts, gun handling, talking to PDEA officers. I trained knife training...I trained with the Scout Rangers, mga Musang ng Pilipinas [and] also spent a day with them. Just learning how they talk, learning how they moved.

"With the PDEA officers, kinakausap namin ano yung mga paghahanda na ginagawa nila (we talked to how they prepare for a buy bust)... so it was a lot of mental and physical training for this role," she said. (WATCH: Anne Curtis, Brandon Vera behind the scenes of 'Buy Bust')

"Gagawin nila ang lahat para sa kapwa nila Pilipino. Para sa bayan," she said of the officers she met along the way. (They'll do anything for their fellow Filipino, for the country.)

The rest of the cast also underwent intense training so by the time the cameras were rolling, everything was okay.

Following the success of Sid and Aya and an upcoming movie in the Metro Manila Film Festival, Anne was asked if there was still out to prove something, especially with Buy Bust.

She said she wanted to show the public that female stars can also be the lead in local action films.

MANILA, Philippines – Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said that it was actor Robin Padilla who recommended director Joyce Bernal to direct the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA).

In a chance interview with reporters on Wednesday, July 11, Andanar said: "Oo, si Robin Padilla ang nag-recommend kay Presidente," Andanar said. (Yes, it was Robin Padilla who recommended her to the President.)

Bernal, who directed the Kimmy Dora series, will be directing the SONA on July 23, 2018. During the SONA, which takes place at the Batasang Pambansa, the Philippine president makes an official report to the nation. Presidents usually trophy their accomplishments from the year prior during the speech, while laying down their plans for the coming year. 

Andanar said there was no existing list of possible directors when Bernal's name came up. Amo director Brillante Mendoza previously directed the last two SONAS of Duterte.

When asked what to expect from this year's SONA, Andanar said: "As a creative person, I'm excited kung ano ang magiging creative output ni direk Joyce." (As a creative person, I'm excited what will be the creative output of direk Joyce.)

Andanar said he and Bernal have yet to formally meet, but said that he will find out within the day what has transpired during the technical meeting between his office and Bernal.

In an interview with Rappler on the sidelines of a press conference last July 4, Glaiza said that during one of the shooting days, she studied one of the songs on-the-spot before the cameras rolled.

"Pinag-aral sa akin yung 'Pagbabalik' first. Nung una, hum hum lang tapos okay, ang dali lang pala nito. Tapos nung pangalawang beses, pinaaral sa akin yung 'Himig ng Pag-ibig,' na parang 'Glaiz, may isa ka pa palang song na kakantahin today which is 'Himig ng Pag-ibig," she said. 

(They made me study "Pagbabalik" first. In the beginning it was just humming and then I was able to get it. But during the second time, they made me study "Himig ng Pag-Ibig" like 'Glaiz, you have one more song to sing, which was that.)

Glaiza said she studied it the whole day by listening and admitted that she got frustrated when they shot the scene because of mistakes that she made.

"Pero after watching it, parang sinabi sa akin ni direk Kip na gusto niya yung mga imperfections, gusto niya yung pagka-raw at naging successful siya na same day niya sinabi para hindi ako nag-over prepare, hindi siya performance level."

(But after watching it, direk Kip said he like the imperfections, he liked that it was raw and it became successful because I did not over prepare.)

Balancing TV and film

Glaiza, who is on GMA 7's Contessa said that she personally got to meet the woman whose life story inspired the movie.

"I actually met her before kami mag-shoot, and kinukwento niya yung experience n'ya sa mga panahon na iyon, noong time na nakulong siya, nabuntis at noong time na pinaganak niya yung anak niya sa kulungan."

(I actually met her before we started shooting and she told me her experience during that time — when she was imprisoned, when she got pregnant, and when she gave birth inside the prison.)

"So doon pa lang napaisip ako kung kakakayanin ko," she said, recalling the balance between shooting the movie on top of her television commitments.

NEW YORK, USA – Cardi B, who has quickly risen to become one of the most prominent women in hip-hop, has become a mother, announcing Wednesday, July 11 the birth of daughter Kulture Kiari Cephus.

Cardi B, who previously revealed the baby's gender, had the child with fellow rapper Offset, one-third of the hard-living Atlanta hip hop trio Migos. He has 3 other children from previous relationships.

The baby's name clearly reflects her father, who was born as Kiari Kendrell Cephus. Migos has put out albums entitled "Culture" and "Culture II."

Cardi B has become one of the biggest new stars on the US musical landscape since the runaway success last year of her song "Bodak Yellow," which touches on her former life making ends meet as a stripper.

A Bronx native whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, Cardi B recently returned to number one on the US singles chart with "I Like It," which nods musically to her Latin heritage.

Cardi B initially kept her pregnancy under wraps before showing off her baby bump in an April television performance on Saturday Night Live.

NEW YORK, USA – Aged just 20 and the youngest member of the extended reality-TV Kardashian clan, Kylie Jenner is on track to become America's youngest "self-made" billionaire, Forbes revealed Wednesday, July 11.

The young mother, who gave birth to daughter Stormi in February, set up Kylie Cosmetics  two years ago and the company has already sold more than $630 million worth of makeup, the magazine said.

Forbes conservatively valued her company at $800 million and raised her overall worth to $900 million  by throwing in earnings from television programs, endorsements and after-tax dividends.

Jenner owns 100% of the company, which started out with a $29 "lip kit" –matching set of lipstick and lip liner that traded on her trademark pout. 

She's already the youngest person on Forbes' list of richest self-made US women and another year of growth would make her the youngest self-made billionaire ever, beating Mark Zuckerberg, who crossed the threshold at the age of 23.

Forbes said the firm has only 7 full-time and 5 part-time employees, with manufacturing, packaging and sales outsourced, and momager Kris handling the business side in exchange for a 10-percent management cut.

"As ultralight startups go, Jenner's operation is essentially air. And because of those minuscule overhead and marketing costs, the profits are outsize and go right into Jenner's pocket," Forbes wrote.

Jenner is the youngest daughter of Kris and Caitlyn, formerly Olympic gold medalist Bruce. Her sister is supermodel Kendall. Her half-sisters are Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe Kardashian.

Reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kardashians launched when Kylie was 10 years old. Aged 17, she trademarked the phrase "Kylie Lip Kits... for the perfect pout."

Forbes said she used $250,000 earned from modeling to pay a company to produce the first 15,000 lip kits, which she spent months teasing on Instagram. They sold out in less than a minute at the November 2015 launch.

LOS ANGELES, USA – The mission to rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach from  a Thai cave is to get the Hollywood treatment in a movie announced by faith-based production house Pure Flix.

Managing partner Michael Scott, who lives in Thailand and was at the rescue site in Chiang Rai as the boys were being pulled to safety, made the announcement late Tuesday on Twitter.

"I couldn't be more excited. This story has meant so much to me as I have followed it in Thailand this summer," he said in a video filmed at the scene of the flooded cave in the country's north.

"My wife actually grew up with the Thai Navy SEAL that died in the cave. To see all that heroic bravery in the cave, and to get all the divers out, it's just such a touching event and so personal to me."

Stunning video footage emerged Wednesday of several of the "Wild Boars" team – aged 11 to 16 – being freed from the Tham Luang cave on stretchers, ending a successful 3-day rescue.

They are in good physical and mental health, say doctors, despite a harrowing 18 days inside the dank, dark cave before a risky rescue operation that was dubbed "Mission: Impossible".

Scott's wife has been involved with planning the funeral for Saman Kunan, the former SEAL that died on July 6 while helping install oxygen tanks in preparation for the extraction.

"We're here really looking at this as a movie that could inspire millions of people across the globe," Scott added.

"And we're here witnessing the events, gathering some contacts and everything, to really tell a story about an international effort, the entire world coming together to save (12) kids trapped in this Thai cave."

Pure Flix co-founder David A.R. White told The Wall Street Journal the company – which was behind the 2014-18 God's Not Dead trilogy – was talking to actors, writers and potential investors.
