Below, Rappler movie critic Oggs Cruz weighs in on the entries in this year's Cinema One Originals film festival.

Si Magdalola at ang Mga Gago Review: From forest to city

{source}<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fsimagdalolaatangmgagago%2Fvideos%2F214505372309263%2F&show_text=0&width=400" width="500" height="500" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" allowFullScreen="true"></iframe>{/source}

Jules Katanyag’s Si Magdalola at ang Mga Gago is a wild and fun romp that starts in the forest where a grandmother (Peewee O’Hara) lives with her granddaughter (Rhen Escano) who is starting to explore her sexuality. It ends in the city where the same grandmother, who is now accompanied by a vengeful balikbayan (Elora Espano), is wreaking havoc with a gang of drug peddlers. In between is a hodgepodge of all sorts of attempts to marry extremes, resulting in a film that astounds in its brash experimentations on form and narrative.

While the film is tightly fueled by its very clever concept, it lacks charisma. The film is cheeky. It finds humor in the most unlikely places. However, it is also too impertinent for its own good since it never graduates into anything that is emotionally compelling. It might be because Katanyag’s motive is not really connected to emotional heft. Perhaps his goal is to simply weave together all possible tropes to come up with something so unfamiliar that it astounds completely.

Tisay Review: It’s a woman’s world

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZF7Ruw2Guy4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Borgy Torre’s Tisay has an all too familiar narrative. Tisay (Nathalie Hart), a small-time bookie, becomes romantically involved with an aspiring basketball player (JC De Vera) and her maniacal boss (Joel Torre) who wants her to lure her new beau to fix a match for profit. That is the film in a nutshell. However, Torre’s film aspires to more than its simplistic storyline. In between its predictable twists and turns is a portrait of a woman who wears various roles from the whore with the heart of gold to the manipulative schemer – all to play the puppetmaster of the men who fall within her influence.

Even with its testosterone-laden depiction of a world of low-rent sports, sex-crazed goons, and overprotective patriarchs, the film has women steering the narrative, whether it be Tisay and her unpredictable motives, or the mother whose unfortunate mishap forces her son to become ruthless, or the mayor’s wife who is able to tame a monster.

Lily Review: Men and their urban legends

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4ru8fktmkKI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Keith Deligero’s Lily is a labyrinth of ideas all stemming from a Cebuano urban legend that has been used by parents to scare their children to sleep. The film opens with Manuel Ungo (Rocky Salumbides) in the middle of the forest, out to shoot a sigbin, a mythical creature that is said to grant its hunter unlimited bounty. He fails to shoot the creature as he is blindsided by a pretty lady (Shaina Magdayao). She lures him into a fractured story about men, their inability to commit, and all the women who have been turned to monsters out of abuse.

Instead of telling the story in a predictable and straightforward way, Deligero creates a mosaic of scenes that center on Manuel’s experiences. We see him in Manila wooing a stripper (Natileigh Sitoy) with his manly charms. She eventually falls in love with him, bears him a child, and ends up in a purgatory of tenuous relations. Edited in a way to make it feel like Manuel’s irresponsibility is routine and repetitive, the film makes a profound point as to how myths and legends are products of realities made absurd by word of mouth, the passage of time, and man’s capacity to cover his faults and imperfections with tall tales and urban legends. Lily bravely exposes the truths simmering beneath the horrors and mysteries.

Malinak Ya Labi Review: Cracks of corruption

{source} <iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oLZiygS2Loc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

There are profound truths underneath all the cinematic artifice that Jose Abdel Langit drapes Malinak Ya Labi with. At its core, the film is about corruption that exists beneath the cracks that exist in a small rural town. Its conceit of telling a story through the various moral decisions and consequences of its characters is ingenious in that it unravels evil though small steps resulting in grander and more alarming fissures.

The film unfortunately is rife with needless ornaments, from a frustratingly staggered slow motion sequence that does nothing to explore how interconnected the lives the film attempts to explore to the overused drone shots.

Langit’s earnest effort to give his first feature film a certain sheen of sophistication backfires. His screenplay is one that needs a steady hand and a simple vision to work. However, he keeps the film cluttered and busy, ending up with a work that wants to be so many things that it fails to be simply coherent.

Baka Bukas Review: All dulled up

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/osG6puTo0EY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> {/source}

Samantha Lee’s Baka Bukas centers on Alex (Jasmine Curtis-Smith), a lesbian who is afraid to come out to her best friend Jess (Louise Delos Reyes). Through a series of unfortunately convoluted events, Jess finds out.

There are films that require roughness to work. Baka Bukas does not even need this, but it could use a subtle edge. Still, the characters remain the bright, bubbly and talkative millennials that they are. The result is a film that has been dulled by its vapid devotion to the pastel-colored romance between its two leads. Lee wastes her intriguing milieu, conveniently latching on to all the tropes and stereotypes instead of adding to it. In the end, the film feels like a non-event, a failed exploration of emotions that are as fleeting as all the words that Lee’s characters repetitively deliver.

2 Cool 2 Be 4Gotten Review: Lessons in history

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UA97lzr-c6Y" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> {/source}

Jason Paul Laxamana’s screenplay for 2 Cool 2 Be 4Gotten is as intelligent as it is emotionally potent. On its surface, it is a coming-of-age tale of Felix (Khalil Ramos), a high school overachiever whose superiority complex has rendered him friendless. He is forced out of his shell by two newcomers in school, Magnus (Ethan Salvador) and Maximillian (Jameson Blake), half-American siblings with questionable motives. Like most of Laxamana’s works, the screenplay borders on darkness. It echoes post-colonial sentiment, reflecting a national attraction for everything and anything foreign notwithstanding moral ambiguities.

At the hands of first time feature film director Petersen Vargas, Laxamana’s screenplay blossoms into a work of gorgeous sentimentality. The tale’s darkness is tempered by focusing not on the bizarreness of the tainted innocence the film has in abundance, but on the possibility that whatever attraction and romance that comes out of the characters’ explorations are pure.

It helps that Ramos’ portrayal of Felix is one that aches with both candor and frailty in the midst of experiences that are brand new to him. 2 Cool 2 Be 4Gottenis a brave debut for Vargas. It is also a testament that prolific Laxamana is one of the most interesting writers working today.

Every Room is a Planet Review: Love at light speed

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/O-QRdAxXi1o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

There is no point to trying to decode Malay Javier’s Every Room is a Planet. It will only ruin the experience of being inexplicably enchanted by the illogical movement of love and attraction. The film fascinates as a mystery about how love works. Javier offers a view of people falling in love even if they shouldn’t. He doesn’t offer answers, just vague moods and nebulous interactions that cover his story of a man (Rap Fernandez) who can’t help but fall in love with the mentally unstable wife (Valeen Montenegro) of his missing brother (Quark Henares).

For all its inadequacies as a coherent romance between two unstable lovers, Every Room is a Planet succeeds in capturing the allure of falling in love. Javier dresses the love story in sci-fi trappings, making it feel like the audience is witnessing planets nearly colliding every time the characters attempt to connect at an emotional level. The film’s unpredictable temperament is irresistible and engaging. Its stubborn insistence on documenting the enigmatic grooves of forbidden love through telescope lenses is just something to behold, to enjoy.

Forbidden Memory Review: Timely history

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/sztdldW1GCk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

There are stories that deserve to be told. The stories that are Teng Mangansakan’s subjects in Forbidden Memory deserve to be told now more than ever.

In the midst of history being revised for a population whose pastime is to forget, Mangansakan’s heartbreaking documentary is one whose importance trumps its many flaws.

The documentary’s final few minutes are golden, as they capture the truest of emotions coming from people whose testimonies of pain and torture under Ferdinand Marcos’ regime. This documentary proves that history should not only be written by the victors. It should also be written by those in the margins.

Piding Review: Seductive conundrum

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SkZMIZWzDZ4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Gym Lumbera and Paolo Picones’ Piding is quite a conundrum.

It isn’t strictly a documentary considering it follows a fictionalized account of a scientist (Spanky Manikan) who is searching for his first wife. However, it can also be argued that the fictional parts of the film only serve the purpose of enunciating the mysteries of life that Lumbera and Picones attempt to document. They do so through stirring images of arresting landscapes, animals in magical moments, and people acting irrationally.

The film pits science against faith, logic against love, and man-made structures against nature’s majesty. Piding is beautifully bewildering. Its obsessions are bewitching. It’s almost impossible not to fall for its seductions.

People Power Bombshell: The Diary of Vietnam Rose Review: Cinema is life

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8k3hA46aUO4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

John Torres’ People Power Bombshell: The Diary of Vietnam Rose is an immense achievement.

Liz Alindogan only has the deteriorating reels to an unfinished film as memory of the delirious experiences she had under director Celso Ad Castillo. Torres turns those reels into his canvas where he paints Alindogan’s story not as a personal tale of strife under the whims of a creative madman, but also as an allegory of a society who has also been taken as hostage by a domineering overlord.

The result is a film of numerous layers, some of which are frivolous, but some immensely profound. People Power Bombshell turns a starlet’s many misfortunes in a stalled film set into a start portrait of a nation that is going nowhere at the hands of a self-proclaimed messiah. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The people behind Mano Po 7: Chinoy discussed their reactions after the film failed to make it to the "Magic 8" of this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

The Mano Po franchise, which started back in 2002, is often one of the most popular films in the MMFF lineups over the years, with stars such as Sharon Cuneta, Kris Aquino, Susan Roces, Maricel Soriano,and Vilma Santos appearing in the stories.

In a press conference for the movie on Tuesday, November 22, Richard Yap, who stars as Wilson Wong in the film, said that they were all disappointed about not being able to participate this year.

"Of course, nalulungkot kaming lahat na hindi nasali doon because we really did everything possible na maging worthy siya sa isang MMFF na entry. But we can’t do anything about it, iyon ang decision nila, so we just have to live with it and do our best by showing this before the MMFF. Para maging masaya pa rin ang mga tao," he said.

(Of course we were all sad about not making to the film fest, because we really did everything possible to be worthy as an entry for the MMFF. But we can't do anything about that, that's their decision, so we just have to live with it and do our best by showing this before the MMFF. So that audiences will still be happy.)

Photo by Rob Reyes/Rappler

Mother Lily Monteverde, industry veteran and producer and owner of Regal Films, also spoke up, saying she cried upon hearing the news.

"Well of course, I feel so sad when I heard about it, talagang umiyak ako (I really cried). Quietly, I cried but talagang it’s there already… while it will run for 10 days, let’s see if we can extend more sana (hopefully)."

Photo by Rob Reyes/Rappler

Mother Lily clarified that she has nothing against the committee's decision, even sharing with the press that the movie was likely competing for the last slots in the list.

"Sana naman (I hope) after this year, next year’s festival, they should understand. It’s not that I’m teaching them [but]... mga tao (people) that belong to these levels of C,D,E, meron silang (they have a) bonus. Once they have their bonus, they bring the whole family to the movies to watch the GP (general patronage). Kasi sayang naman, nanghihinayang ako sa mga bata. (It's really a lost opportunity, I feel so sorry for the kids.) This is a family movie. But anyway, Let’s hope that next year, the entire system should be changed."

She also said she has nothing against independent films, as she's had experience there, too. "We would also have a festival. Do you still remember? In Megamall, in SM. But you know, it should be ano there’s a time for the indie movies, but not Christmas season. Christmas is for the family," she said.

Director Ian Loreños also shared Richard's sentiments but said that what matters now is for the movie to perform well, and for fans to enjoy their work.

Last week, the MMFF committee unveiled the movies that will comprise the festival lineup. Last June, the committee announced that they were removing the "commercial viability" as basis in selecting the film.  Aside from Mano Po 7, MMFF staples like the movie The Super Parental Guardians starring Coco Martin and Vice Ganda (Vice Ganda movies are often present in MMFF lineups and perform very well in the box office), and Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers, starring Vic Sotto, did not make it to the list.

MANILA, Philippines – Many of Vice Ganda's fans were surprised last week, when news that the comedian and Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) regular won't be having a movie in the festival lineup this 2016. ([READ] MMFF 2016 revamped: 10 important changes to know)

This, after 2015's Beauty and the Bestie– directed by the late Wenn Deramas and starring Vice and his best friend Coco Martin – became the highest grossing film in the Philippines, according to ABS-CBN. Vice has also had an entry in the festival lineup every year since 2010.

This year, Coco and Vice collaborated once again on a movie with director Joyce Bernal titled The Super Parental Guardians (TSPG), which follows Arci (Vice) and Paco (Coco) as they take care of two orphaned kids (Awra Briguela and Onyok Pineda).

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9kyugmVmqiM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

And though they were disappointed, the two stars and the director each reflected on the MMFF's decision and found a silver lining to the film fest exclusion. They spoke at a press conference for the movie on Tuesday, November 22. (FULL LIST: 8 MMFF 2016 entries revealed)

Vice Ganda

Vice spoke first, saying that while he was sad when he first heard the news, the movie's team was ready for it too.

He shared that he and his It's Showtime co-host Vhong Navarro, whose movie didn't make it to the festival lineup either, commiserated with each other. Vhong stars in the film Mang Kepweng Returns.

The commedian said that he looked at the #MMFF2016 hashtag on Twitter and saw that people were looking for his and Coco's movie and were disappointed to find that their movie didn't make it too.

"Sobra akong na-overwhelm, naiyak ako. Iyak ako nang iyak kasi nagkaroon ako ng realization na may' maganda pala akong naiambag sa buhay ng mga tao tuwing Pasko ngayon, na hinahanap nila ako ngayong Pasko... na naging bahagi na pala kami ng Pasko nila. Na gusto nila, ngayong Pasko, bahagi ulit kami, na malaking bagay na hindi kami magiging bahagi nung Pasko nila ngayong taong ito," shared Vice.

(I was so overwhelmed, I cried. I kept crying because I came to the realization that I contributed something to people's lives during Christmas, they look for me during Christmas... I've become a part of their Christmas. That they want, this Christmas, for us to be a part of it again, that it's a big deal that we won't be part of their Christmas this year.)

"Kaya sobra akong na-overwhelm, sabi ko, 'Ay, ang sarap na I was able to do something right, I was able to serve my purpose. Kasi yun yung purpose ko eh, magpasaya ng tao, magpatawa, magpangiti, magpahalikhik, magpagaan ng pakiramdam. At 'yun yung naramdaman nila sa mga huli naming pelikula. Kaya na-serve ko yung purpose ko, I was just so happy. And itong pangyayaring 'to na mas napaaga ng pagpapakita sa pelikula, it's a big blessing. It's a very big blessing."

(So I was very overwhelmed, I said, 'It feels so good that I was able to do something right, i was able to serve my purpose. Because that's my purpose, to make people happy, to make them laugh, make them smile, make them burst out laughing, make them feel lighter. And that's what they felt with our last movie. That's why I was able to serve my purpose, I was just so happy. And this event, which made us move the movie's release date earlier, it's a big blessing. It's a very big blessing.)

The MMFF movie lineup will be released, as is tradition, on December 25. TSPG will be released on November 30.

Coco Martin

Photo by Rob Reyes/Rappler

For his part, Coco agreed with Vice, saying that he was speechless when he first heard the news, but that other opportunities and blessings will come to them despite the rejection.

Coco said he wanted to make an MMFF movie this year, as with every year, for himself, for his fans, and for his co-stars – Awra, Onyok, and Pepe Herrera – to whom he promised to include the next time he tried for the festival.

He added that had TSPG made it to the MMFF, it would have been a Christmas gift to the Filipinos.

"Nung binubuo namin yung pelikula, yun yung finofocus namin, yun yung pinaghahandaan namin na sa Pilipino," said Coco.

(When were were making the film, that was our focus, that was what were preparing for the Filipinos.)

But Coco still thinks that good things will come out of this experience: "Pero sinabi ko na lang sa sarili ko, alam ko na may magandang purpose 'to eh, na hindi man kami nasali, alam ko may dahilan kung bakit.

(But I told myself, I know that this has a good purpose, that we weren't able to join the festival, but I know that there's a reason why.)

"Sabi nga nila, may kasabihan na pag may nagsaradong pinto, may bubukas na bintana. And then ang sa 'kin ngayon, honestly, mas excited ako kasi nareject man kami, pero ngayon may nagbubukas na bago para sa 'min. Tapos may mas nagloolook forward na parang 'Hindi, at least ang importante, sure tayo na maganda yung pelikula namin.' Kaya yun po, yun yung nagpapalakas ng loob ko ngayon."

(They say that when a door closes, a window opens. And then for me, honestly, I'm more excited, because even though we were rejected, there are still new opportunities opening up for us. And now we can look forward and say, 'No, at least what's important is that we're sure that our movie was good.' So there, that's what's keeping me strong now.)

Joyce Bernal

Photo by Rob Reyes/Rappler

On the other hand, Joyce was asked if she was okay with the MMFF's decision, given that she was on the MMFF's Board of Jurors in 2012 – the group that decides on who will receive the awards for the festival's awards night.

Joyce first reacted to the changes in the MMFF this year, which include changes to the criteria for selection. Most notably, the MMFF decided to do away with the "commercial viability" criteria this year, which used to take up 50% of the scoring before.

"Binago nila yung submission [rules], naramdaman ko yun, binago nila yung [Executive Committee], iba yun. So parang meron silang pinaparating talaga, mayroon silang gustong sabihin, mayroon silang gustong iparating. So naramdaman ko po yun," said Joyce.

(They changed the submission [rules], I felt that, they changed the [Executive Committee], it's different. So they have a message to get across, they have something to say, and they have something to get across. So I felt that.)

Photo by Rob Reyes/Rappler

She added: "When I was part of the jury nung [2012], para ikwestiyon ka –pinag-uusapan po 'yun, ginegradan namin 'yun, we deliberate on it even before the grading mismo.

(When I was part of the jury in [2012], to be questioned – the decision-making is talked about, we give grades, we deliberate on it before the grading itself.)

"So mayroong proseso talagang sinusunod. So sa lahat po ng jury o ano man selection commmittee, rinrespeto ko po yung ginawa nila yung trabaho nila. At anoman po yung gusto nilang gawin, irespeto ko rin po yun this coming Metro Manila Film Festival."

(So there's really a process that's followed. And to all the jury or the selection committee members, I respect their work. And anything they want to do, I respect that too, this coming MMFF.)

For Joyce, this rejection isn't the end of Vice, Coco, and herself being included in the festival: "At saka kung gusto pa rin nila Coco at saka ni Vice next year na gumawa nun, lalaban po kami next year."

(And if Coco and Vice want to make another movie, we'll fight next year.) – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA – Rapper Kanye West was taken to a hospital in Los Angeles after his doctor called the emergency services to report he was suffering a mental breakdown, news reports said Tuesday, November 23.

The musician's personal physician Michael Farzam told police that his 39-year-old patient was "acting erratically" due to sleep deprivation and dehydration and he was concerned about his well-being, the celebrity gossip website TMZ said.

He was taken from his personal trainer's home to UCLA Medical Center handcuffed to a gurney, as is standard procedure for psychiatric patients, TMZ said.

The "Fade" rapper's health scare took place after he abruptly canceled the remaining 21 dates of his "Saint Pablo Tour" on Monday following a rambling onstage tirade at the weekend against fellow artists Jay Z and Beyonce.

His wife, reality TV queen Kim Kardashian, was due to make her return to the public eye on Monday night for the first time since she was robbed at gunpoint in Paris in October. But she reportedly canceled her plans and rushed to her husband's bedside.

Meanwhile several celebrities came out in support of West on Tuesday with singer John Legend saying he could tell the father-of-two wasn't doing well when he saw him recently.

"We were with Kim actually, you know, right before all of that," the fellow musician and friend told US television, referring to Kanye's hospitalization. "I was concerned by what I saw, so hopefully he's getting some rest and some time to figure things out."

He did not elaborate on West's condition.

'Get well soon'

Other celebrities took to social media to express their support for the multiple Grammy Award-winning musician, including actor Emile Hirsch who said he had been down the same road.

"Hey @kanyewest, get better man! People are making jokes right now, but having been there myself, I hope he gets the help he needs," Hirsch tweeted.

Actor Marlon Wayans also offered his backing in a series of tweets, saying that while the rapper may have put some people off by his recent rantings he wished him well.

"And I hope u all pray for @kanyewest too. He's not just an artist but he's a father, a son a husband and above (all) human. Get well soon," one tweet said.

The rapper had told an audience on Thursday that he did not vote but would have chosen Republican President-elect Donald Trump, sparking angry fans to boo the star and throw items on stage.

Actress Rose McGowan said she hoped West recovers while admonishing him for supporting Trump.

"I hope Kanye West feels better, I also hope he'll realize that no white supremacist is worth adulating," she tweeted.

Since August, West has performed around 40 dates in Canada and the United States, rapping above the stage on an innovative "floating" platform.

He halted a gig in New York in the middle of his set when he was informed that his wife was robbed at gunpoint in Paris.

West has not spoken publicly about the incident but TMZ quoted a source as saying time spent away from family had added to the rapper's stress.

He canceled several dates the following week but made a comeback in his hometown, Chicago, and performed without incident until a show in Oakland on October 22 where he described the Grammys as "rigged."

The latest cancelation followed a Saturday night show in Sacramento, where West showed up an hour late and performed three songs before berating other artists and defeated White House hopeful Hillary Clinton, and cutting the performance short. – Jocelyne Zablit, AFP/Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA – Brad Pitt has been cleared after a probe into allegations he mistreated one of his children in a mid-air altercation, the FBI said on Tuesday, November 22.

The claims centered on an alleged incident with his 15-year-old son Maddox in September on a flight from France to Los Angeles. Pitt's wife Angelina Jolie claimed he had struck the boy.

"In response to allegations made following a flight... carrying Mr. Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI has conducted a review of the circumstances and will not pursue further investigation," the agency said in a statement.

"No charges have been filed in this matter."

The announcement marks Pitt's second vindication over the incident, two weeks after Los Angeles social workers cleared the 52-year-old of wrongdoing following interviews with the couple, their children and witnesses.

Jolie, 41, filed for divorce in September, citing irreconcilable differences. She is seeking sole custody of their six children.

Pitt, who won a best film Oscar for producing "12 Years a Slave" (2013), has been in contact with all six of the couple's children and is seeking joint legal and physical custody.

The reunions were supervised by a therapist as part of the couple's temporary custody agreement – mediated by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services – which was recently extended.

Under the agreement Jolie had physical custody of the children – three of whom, including Maddox, are adopted – at a rented LA house.

The A-listers – given the celebrity moniker "Brangelina" – wed in France in August two years ago, but had been a couple since 2004.

MANILA, Philippines – Alleged drug lord Kerwin Espinosa cleared actor and Ormoc mayor Richard Gomez of drug allegations during the Senate hearing on Wednesday, November 23.

"Hindi kaya ako barilin niyan? MAD [Mamamayan Ayaw sa Droga] 'yan! Wala siyang alam sa drugs (Won't he shoot me? He's part of MAD [Mamamayan Ayaw sa Droga]! He has nothing to do with drugs),Espinosa said about Gomez.

Espinosa reaffirmed that Gomez was not involved in the drug trade when Senator Manny Pacquiao asked him about it. Pacquiao asked if Gomez or his in-laws were involved in the drug trade.

"Hindi talaga iyan. Mga malinis na tao iyan talaga, your honor (That's really not true. They are clean people, your honor)," he said.

Earlier in November, Gomez's name was mentioned by Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido – the police chief of Albuera, Leyte – who claimed Gomez was involved with Espinosa's drug syndicate. (READ: Richard Gomez to sue Albuera cop who linked him to drug group)

Aside from Gomez, Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla, Baybay City Vice Mayor Michael Cari, and Leyte 3rd District Representative Ching Veloso were also named by Espenido, who said that the information came from the late Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr.

Mayor Espinosa was killed in his jail cell during a police operation to serve a search warrant for him and another inmate. The mayor and his son Kerwin were among the first alleged drug personalities named by President Rodrigo Duterte.

On November 23, Gomez's lawyer Alex Avisado Jr posted a statement on Gomez's Facebook page. In it, he summarized what happened during the hearing, and said: "This is the truth. This is vindication. Mayor Richard Gomez is clean and will continue his all-out war against illegal drugs. We hope someday Ormoc City will be drug free. We thank you and pray for your continued support."

During the hearing, Espinosa also said that Espenido was working for the Codilla family. Avisado said in his statement that the Codillas are political rivals of the Gomezes. (READ: Kerwin Espinosa: Albuera top cop introduced me to Ronnie Dayan)

WASHINGTON DC, USA – An emotional Ellen DeGeneres was among the 21 people honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Tuesday, November 11.

During a ceremony at the White House, President Barack Obama gave out the awards – the nation's highest civilian honor – for his last time to a diverse group of sports stars, scientists, artists, and philanthropists.

"Everybody on this stage has touched me in a very powerful personal way," Obama said. "It's useful when you think about this incredible collection of people to realize that this is what makes us the greatest nation on earth.

"Not because of what we are, not because of our differences, but because in our difference we find something common to share."

While speaking on the accomplishments of DeGeneres, Obama lauded the comedian's courage for coming out as gay.

"What an incredible burden that was to bear, to risk her career like that," he said. "People don't do that very often, and then to have the hopes of millions on your shoulders."

As is his style Obama broke up the weightier moments during the ceremony with a humorous touch.

"But it's like Ellen says: 'We all want a tortilla chip that can support the weight of guacamole.' Which really makes no sense to me, but I thought that would break the mood because I was getting kind of choked up."

Aside from DeGeneres, the star-studded group included basketball star Michael Jordan, actors Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, and Robert Redford, music legend Bruce Springsteen, basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and cultural icon Diana Ross.

Obama also praised actor De Niro's many iconic roles.

"A Sicilian father turned New York mobster, a mobster who runs a casino, a mobster who needs therapy," the president read off, drawing laughter from the crowd. "A father-in-law scarier than a mobster, Al Capone, a mobster."

De Niro has been in the spotlight recently for his candid disapproval of President-elect Donald Trump. The actor hasn't minced words in his criticism of the Republican, describing him as "a punk," "a pig," and "an idiot."

"I'd like to punch him in the face," he said before the election.

Many of the award recipients have been outspoken against Trump or have given support to Democrats.

Erik Matti defends indie films, MMFF 2016 lineup

MANILA, Philippines – Director Erik Matti called on the public to support this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) lineup, saying moviegoers should not turn their noses up at independent films.

The director made the remarks in a Facebook post on Wednesday, November 23. (FULL LIST: 8 MMFF 2016 entries revealed)

"Hinay-hinay sa paghamak at pag-insulto ng salitang 'indie' na parang ito'y may ketong na dapat layuan," said Erik.

(Ease up on belittling and insulting the word "indie" as if it's a disease that you have to stay away from.)

Pareho pong pelikula 'yan."

(Indie and mainstream are both movies and we shouldn't separate them from each other. Indie films, like mainstream films, can be deep or shallow, smart or stupid, funny or sad, commercial or artistic, for the young or the old, cheap or big budget. They are both movies.)

This year, festival regulars like Vic Sotto and Vice Ganda, whose movies were made by big production companies, didn't make it to the lineup.

Following the announcement of the festival lineup, many social media users expressed disappointment that Vice, who has had an MMFF movie every year since 2010, didn't make it.

His movie with Coco Martin in 2015, Beauty and the Bestie, is reportedly the highest grossing Filipino film.

Erik's comments also came after industry veteran Lily Monteverde, producer and owner of Regal Films, spoke about their MMFF bet not making it to the festival. This year, Regal Films' entry was an installment in the Mano Po film series titled Chinoy. (READ: Richard Yap, Mother Lily discuss 'Mano Po 7' exclusion from MMFF 2016 lineup)

Monteverde said she had nothing against indie films, but deplored her movie's exclusion from the festival. "But you know... there's a time for the indie movies, but not Christmas season. Christmas is for the family."

A few days before his Facebook post, Erik also tweeted about this year's festival lineup, saying: "More than [my movie Seklusyon] getting in, I am so happy with the line-up of the films. This is the change we are all wishing for in [MMFF 2016]."

Tickets for the concert started to sell online and over the counter at 10 am on Thursday, November 24. However, many fans found they could not get through to the SM Tickets site at that time.

Rappler checked the website every hour until 5 pm and eventually got through to the website, but not to the page where fans could buy the Coldplay concert tickets.

Fans who arrived at various outlets around 9:30 am continued to wait in line as of 4:30 pm, according to tweets online. Rappler was at SM North EDSA, where we talked to dedicated fans in line, some of whom cut class or took a day off from work to try their luck at tickets. No regrets for Coldplay, they said.

One fan, 28, told Rappler she filed for a half-day leave in order to get her Bronze or General Admission ticket. But when things took longer than usual, she didn’t hesitate to take the day off her job in manufacturing. “Since unexpected, whole day na ako nag-leave,” she said.

Another fan, a 23-year-old law student, skipped class to try and get his tickets at the same mall. When we talked to him, he had already been waiting for over 6 hours.

“I’ve been here since 10, I skipped class. I have final exams in two weeks time, but it’s Coldplay, it’s once in a lifetime.”

“No regrets.”

At SM North EDSA, a customer service officer told Rappler that there were "system downtime" and "system congestion" which led to the delay, and that other branches experienced similar problems.

At the same mall, they handed out mints and coffee candies and laid out chairs for fans who had been standing for hours.

A tweet from MMI's Rhiza Pascua also said that the system experienced problems.

Gab Valenciano speaks up on Marcos burial: 'I will not move on'

MANILA, Philippines – Many have spoken up about the issue of former president Ferdinand Marcos being buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes' Cementery) on Friday, November 18, including famous personalities like Gab Valenciano.

Gab, a multimedia artist and the son of Gary Valenciano and Angeli Pangilinan, was born in 1988, two years after the Marcos regime ended 1986. Still, he said, he opposed the Marcos burial.

In a Facebook post dated November 19, Gab acknowledged a common criticism from Marcos loyalists or those from older generations: that those who weren't born during Martial Law have no right to speak against the former president because they didn't know what those years were truly like.

Some loyalists even say that those years under the Marcos regime weren't bad.

In defense of his post, Gab said: "I am 28 years old. I didn't experience the Marcos administration the way millions of people did, so in theory, I really have no right to speak on behalf of those who were truly affected."

But he continued to say that as a young Filipino, he has a right to say something about an issue that is affecting our country: "But I am a soul of this generation, a citizen of this country, and the issue is causing a great divide between fellow countrymen and possibly affect my future, our future. So yes, I believe I do have a say. And so do the young guns of this country."

{source}<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgabvalenciano88%2Fposts%2F612136378974775&width=500" width="100%" height="275" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true"></iframe>{/source}

'The problem'

Before he explained this, Gab looked into why the Filipinos were divided about the Marcos burial.

"Filipinos are forgetful. We never learn. We seriously don't. This is a clear cut fact and has been our characteristic for decades. We are stubborn, complacent, entitled and boastful, partnered with an ungodly level of expectation and hope. Filipinos are gullible and will cling on to anything that looks, feels and sounds good," he wrote.

He said that this could possibly be because of a lack of education or administrative failures, but argued that information in this day and age shouldn't be so hard to attain.

He concluded: "Sadly, we are the type of people who, despite being warned, cross unstable bridges and once the bridge collapses, we complain and blame every single thing we can think of."

'I will not move on'

Gab finished by speaking about the Marcos family and speaking to the Filipinos who have told others to move on from the Martial Law era. (READ: 'Marcos apologists, don't tell us to move on')

"Understand that forgiveness isn't merely accepting what has happened. True forgiveness includes acknowledgment that horrific events did indeed happen, and simply showing an initiative to make up for it or even recognizing the suffering of thousands or even millions of Filipinos that you caused. Sadly, we don't see any of this," said Gab.

He finished: "There is no sense of humility, remorse or sympathy from the family, not to mention the recent, most devious burial ceremony I have ever read about. All that, above all, is what I find truly disturbing. So no, I will not move on as this is a direct attack towards our humanity. We deserve better."

On November 18, former president Ferdinand Marcos was buried at the LNMB to the outrage of many protesters who took to the streets. The burial caught the country by surprise, because although the Supreme Court had voted to allow for the burial, petitioners still had time to file motions for reconsideration.

Celebrities and even political figures protested as well, whether on the streets, online, or through official statements.

Vice President Leni Robredo said in a statement: "As stated in several decisions from the Supreme Court, Ferdinand Marcos was a thief, a murderer, and a dictator. He is no hero. If he were, obviously his family would not have to hide his burial like a shameful criminal deed." – Rappler.com

Synthpop duo Chairlift to ignite Manila with their signature style

Whenever you hear the words, "critically acclaimed" used to describe an artist, you should take pause. Often, it’s simply rhetoric, typically reserved for the standard press release or some gushy review.

Telltale signs that provide insight towards the artist themselves are what to focus on. Do they write their own music? Many modern pop artists do not. Do they produce their own work? This task is usually handled by another entity entirely, it’s a business in itself. Have they done any solo work? Many musicians find it extremely challenging to go it on their own then to go back to a band – it’s a totally different animal. Are any of the members of the group multi-instrumentalists? It's a skill that many will never master. Any collaborations with the industry leaders? Respect from your peers, as in any profession, may be the ultimate compliment.

In the case of Chairlift, the answer to all these questions is a resounding yes.

Photo courtesy of Invisible College

Chairlift is an American synthpop duo based in Brooklyn, New York, which consists of Caroline Polacheck (lead vocal duties and the synthesizer) and Patrick Wimberly (drums, keyboards, bass, guitar, and backing vocals). They met at college in Boulder, Colorado in 2005. Oddly enough, they also created live music as the background for haunted houses, which provides insight to their level of dedication as artists – most folks wouldn’t bother with such a thankless assignment.

They relocated, heading east, searching for somewhere to hone their craft, where new and unique ideas would be sought after by music aficionados. They eventually landed in New York City.

They’ve produced 3 albums to date, the latest being Moth, which was released earlier this year. Wimberly and Polachek wrote, recorded, and self-produced the entire album, with a little help on few tracks from Grammy-nominated LA producer, Robin Hannibal.

It was their song “Ch-Ching” that first caught my ear. With its interesting, almost vibrating bass, lively riffs, and catchy hook, it's certainly adrenaline-filled. Caroline’s R&B-inspired vocals are indeed impressive, grabbing the listeners' attention whether they like it or not.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nWSFlqBOgl8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

“Bruises” is another ridiculously catchy song, with an incessant drum machine beat and sweet lyrics in a boy-girl duet format, a song that you may recognize from an Apple iPod TV commercial.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZQ9hLOHj8ag" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Their music is vocally something akin to Kate Bush (listen to Chairlift's "Unfinished Business") or Sarah McLachlan mixed with something you might hear from an indie rock band like MGMT. An '80s-esque throwback sound, a recent trend in music today with bands like St Lucia, Yeasayer, or Tame Impala, yet creating a distinct style in this new breed of experimental indie pop.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/yU7-q2_LTfY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

They’ve collaborated with the likes of Beyoncé on her self-titled album, via the track “No Angel,” which was written and produced by Caroline and co-produced by Patrick. Caroline released and toured with a self-produced solo album called Arcadia, under the alias Ramona Lisa and collaborated with SBTRKT, Blood Orange and others.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/d7PPjEB2QZQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

On their second album, Something, they worked with producer Alan Moulder who has collaborated with Depeche Mode, My Bloody Valentine, and Nine Inch Nails. For the same album, they also worked with Dan Cary, who has produced albums for MIA, Franz Ferdinand, and Lily Allen, among others.

Patrick has produced and collaborated with artists such as Solange Knowles, Wet, and Tune-Yards.

Chairlift has opened for bands like Phoenix, The Killers and MGMT.

They certainly have chalked up an impressive portfolio, but listen to their record and it’s remarkable to think that such a full sound is emanating from a duo. Their latest work may have a bit more emphasis on Caroline's hypnotic vocals then the previous albums, which tend to lean more towards a synthesized sound.

Ultimately, the reason why I’m drawn to this band is not necessarily the meticulously crafted work, the well thought-out instrumentation with a rich pop sound, or who they’ve worked with in the past. Rather, the vulnerability of the artists themselves. The multiple layers are somehow connected, familiar and catchy, yet unpredictable.

Their work is a series of pieces that hits in you in the heart with an honest approach, an insight to what the musicians are feeling. Creating such a connection is much easier said than done. One of the most challenging aspects of music is to be true to yourself, while being pulled in numerous directions from various sources, yet still connecting with the audience.

Now that they are on your radar, it’s a band that is well worth checking out. They’ll will be performing here in Manila at Black Market on December 1. I’m 99% certain that this will be one of these intimate concerts that you’ll kick yourself for later on if you miss it. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes' daughter is one year old!

Maria Letizia was born on November 23 and Dingdong shared a photo of her birthday celebration on social media on the same day.

On the family photo that he posted, Dingdong said: "We celebrated her [Zia's] first birthday in the same place where we had out first date 8 years ago."

On the other hand, Marian posted a painting by Mark Padernal of herself and Zia. In the photo caption, she said that it was Dingdong who gave it to her after they came home from Tagaytay earlier in the day.

She recounted that he told her: "Hinding-hindi ko nakakalimutan ang sakripisyo mo para sa anak natin (I will never forget the sacrifices you make for our child). I am so proud of you! I appreciate your efforts very much!"

Before she wrote about Dingdong's message, Marian also wrote a message to Zia:

"Happy birthday, anak. Mahal na mahal ka namin ng tatay mo. Nawa'y lumaki ka na maging isang mabuting tao at mapagmahal sa iyong kapwa.

(Happy birthday. Your dad and I love you very much. May you grow up to be a good person and someone who is loving to your fellowmen.)

"Kasabay ng iyong kaarawan ay ipinagpapasalamat ko rin ang isang taon ko na pagbibigay ng gatas sa iyo."

(At the same time as your birthday, I am also grateful for my one year of providing you with milk.)

According to Marian's post, Zia has been purely breastfed.

In the 3-minute clip posted on YouTube, Joshua and his guide Rene tagged along with a fisherman named Cenon and his son Jory, on a day out on the water. As they observed the father and son, they saw for themselves how difficult it was to catch fish.

They later on go back with Cenon and Jory for a meal, where they are served canned sardines. Joshua asks them how many times they get to eat fresh food, and was informed that sometimes, they don't get to eat regular meals at all.
