MANILA, Philippines – The final list of movies for the Metro Manila Film Festival is out!

The list of 8 full-length movies and 8 short films was released on Friday, November 18, at Club Filipino. 

As with the previous years, the MMFF movies will be in theaters on December 25. The festival will run until January 7 and the awards night will be held on January 8. The annual MMFF parade will be held on December 23.

MANILA, Philippines – Members of the entertainment industry have taken to social media to voice their reactions to sudden news that the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was buried at Libingan na mga Bayani Friday, November 18. 

Reports of plunder, human rights abuses, including torture, and thousands of deaths during Martial Law under Marcos are well documented. 

Amnesty International recorded about 70,000 people imprisoned, 34,000 tortured, and 3,240 were killed from 1972 to 1981 – the years when the Philippines was placed under Martial Law. (TIMELINE: The Marcos burial controversy)

The debate of whether or not he should be buried at the Libingan culminated in a Supreme Court decision that voted in the affirmative, removing legal obstacles to the burial. (READ: Martial Law, the dark chapter in Philippine history) 

Staunch anti-Marcos activist and musician Jim Paredes has been tweeting various updates about the burial and also about plans for people to assemble at the People Power Monument along EDSA.

MANILA, Philippines – Musician Taboo, real name Jaime Luis Gomez, has opened up about his battle with testicular cancer – which he kept secret until a recent interview. 

Taboo, best known for his work as a member of the Black Eyed Peas, told People that he was diagnosed with stage 2 testicular cancer in June 2014. After his diagnosis, he immediately went into surgery and later had to go through chemotherapy. According to a separate report from People, he said that he's been cancer-free for two years.

Martin, one of the biggest stars of the Latin music world, made the announcement on Wednesday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The 44-year-old singer, who is an art collector, said he had contacted the painter after seeing some of his conceptual work.

"I saw his art and I went crazy, cause I really love what he does, really original, and so I contacted him," Martin said on the show.

He said the couple had known each other for a little more than a year and were now living together.

"We just got engaged," he gushed, showing off his engagement ring.

Martin said his husband-to-be gets along really well with his 8-year-old twins, who were born to a surrogate mother.

In an interview with Vogue Arabia published in November, Yosef said he was born in the small Syrian town of Ras Al-Ayn but had lived most of his life in Sweden and Britain.

Like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which comes out next month, the new, as yet untitled, spin-off will be set before the franchise's original 1977 film, Star Wars, which was later renamed Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

Lucasfilm boss and Hollywood veteran Kathleen Kennedy is co-producing the standalone film, which is expected to begin filming in January, according to Variety magazine.

It will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the team behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009), The Lego Movie, and the Jump Street films (2012 and 2014).

WASHINGTON DC, USA – The diverse cast of award-winning Broadway musical Hamilton delivered a powerful, if unusual, message to Vice-President elect Mike Pence after he was booed at a performance of the show, urging him to work on behalf of all Americans.

Donald Trump's right-hand man attended a performance Friday, November 17 of the hit musical about young colonial rebels who shaped the country whose founding fathers they would become.

The show's lead actor, Javier Munoz, is openly gay, HIV positive and a cancer survivor. Activists have worried that the incoming Trump administration will be hostile to gay rights.

Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays former vice president Aaron Burr, read a statement to Pence during the curtain call that echoed some of the biggest concerns critics have voiced since Republican firebrand Trump was elected on November 8.

And with that, a performance of a musical about the American Revolution and the dawn of a young nation became even more political.

"Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us here at 'Hamilton: An American Musical.' We really do," Dixon said. 

"We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. 

"But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us. All of us."

The audience cheered and applauded loudly his comments.

Dixon highlighted the fact that Hamilton, which won 11 Tony Awards in June, was performed by "a diverse group of men, women of different colors, creeds and orientations".

The New York Times reported that although Pence was leaving as Dixon began to read his statement from the stage, he stood in the hallway by the auditorium's entrance and heard the entire message.

When he entered the theater earlier before the show, Pence was greeted with a mix of boos and cheers from the audience.

The show celebrates diversity and immigrants' contribution to the nation.

Trump, on the other hand, has deployed polarizing rhetoric to describe immigrants, vowing to build a wall along the US-Mexico border and to ban Muslims from entering the US.

Critics taking part in the online debate said the cast were arrogant "liberals" who had no right to insult the VP, for instance. Defenders ridiculed the idea of boycotting the show, noting it is sold out for months.

The crowd had greeted Pence with a mix of boos and cheers when he entered the theater before the show.

During the performance, the audience gave a standing ovation at the line "immigrants we get the job done," theatergoer Christy Colburn tweeted.

"Crowd went NUTS at King George's lines 'when people say they hate you' & 'do you know how hard it is to lead?' He had to stop the song."

Although Pence was leaving the auditorium when Dixon began reading his statement from the stage, he stood by the entrance to hear the entire message, the New York Times reported. He made no comment.

Trump complained about it all in a tweet Saturday morning.

"Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing," he wrote. "This should not happen!"

What started out as an enjoyable but rather simple adventure of bespectacled orphan and his friends inside the halls of a wizardry school has evolved into something bigger. Each sequel to J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone pushed the narrative to more mature areas, with Rowling criticizing social errors and provoking issues through concepts that are outwardly humorous like Muggles (non-magic people), Squibs (people with a magical lineage who aren’t gifted with magic) and house elves (basically domestic slaves). The story itself quickly touches on a broad spectrum of human experiences from first love, sacrifice, loss, and the inherent capacity to commit to both good and evil.

Magic and mayhem 

David Yates' Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which has Rowling credited as the sole writer, proves that the story has legs.

The film’s connection to the Harry Potter main storyline is tangential – for now. The film’s main character, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), only appears in the Harry Potter lore as the author of one of the textbooks they use in school. Here, he is a complete character – a Brit wizard who arrives in 1920’s Manhattan with a suitcase full of magical creatures. He accidentally switches suitcases with Kowalski (Dan Fogler), who works in a canning factory but dreams of opening his own donut shop. 

While Newt and Kowalski are busy collecting all the creatures that snuck out of the suitcase, the city is being terrorized by some mysterious force. 

As it turns out, the magic community of America has its own form of government – a backward (as Newt would put it) but similarly bureaucratic regime that has its priority the continued invisibility of witches and wizards from the rest of America. The president (Carmen Ejogo) then assigns her best man Graves (Colin Farrell) to get to the bottom of the mayhem that is threatening the delicate balance her government is maintaining.

The movie’s plot is as delightful as the first few adventures of Harry Potter.

The film initially busies itself with silly things, presenting a universe populated by fascinating creatures. It certainly helps that Rowling has decided to set her story in a place where her main character is a newcomer. She treats Manhattan in the roaring twenties with the same sense of newness and wonderment as she did Hogwarts and all of its mysterious halls and rooms. 

Yates complements Rowling’s vision. His direction is refreshingly uncluttered. The spectacles he stages are accompanied with as much frivolity as he can muster, which makes all the difference.

Fantastic Beasts is gorgeously if not a little bit eccentrically plotted. Sure, it takes its time on silly things such as Newt and Kowalski being chased by a rhino-like behemoth that’s ready to mate, but all its abundant deviations from the main plot only contribute to the awe. In fact, Kowalski’s character, which in the grand scheme of things feels like a needless comic relief more than anything, becomes essential in granting the audience the right perspective to the fantastic world that Rowling and Yates endeavor to explore. His wide-eyed approach to all the new things that he sees sums up the scope of emotion that Fantastic Beastsmost successfully communicates.

Subtexts and sequels 

The movie is as lovely as it is insightful. It proves that Rowling’s imagination is top-notch, as she again cleverly utilizes fantasy to raise the evils of intolerance.

The America of Fantastic Beastsis one that is bleak amidst its rustic beauty. Its politics is jaded. Its witches and wizards are persecuted. The evils of its culture where hate simmers are represented by immense forces that decimate everything and anything in their path. Thankfully, the film ends on a hopeful note, where the same America it admonishes for its capacity for pain and suffering is exalted for its ability to love, to dream, and to rebuild. MANILA, Philippines – Star Cinema has released the trailer of the upcoming Coco Martin and Vice Ganda movie The Super Parental Guardians on Sunday, November 20.

Following the success of last year's Beauty and the Bestie, Coco and Vice star as Arci and Paco, clashing personalities who both want to take care of the children of Paco's late sister Sarah (Matet de Leon).

Upon the recommendation of one his friends, Paco seeks help from Arci as he moves in to raise the children, played by Onyok Pineda and Awra Briguela.

NEW YORK, USA – The US vice president-elect insisted Sunday, November 20, he was not offended when the cast of the Broadway hit "Hamilton" expressed worries to him that Donald Trump might not respect US racial, cultural and social diversity.

In another chapter of what appears to be a nascent culture war, Mike Pence clearly sought to defuse the swirling controversy over the Friday night (November 18) performance he attended in New York of a hugely popular play that many see as a symbol of the multicultural left in America.

The incident prompted the president-elect himself to demand an apology over what he saw as rude behavior toward Pence, who was also booed by some in the audience as he entered the theater with his family.

"I did hear what was said from the stage, and I can tell you I wasn't offended by what was said. I'll leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue to say it," Pence said on Fox News Sunday.

Pence acknowledged that these are anxious, disappointing times in America for people who voted for Hillary Clinton.

"I just want to reassure people that what president-elect Donald Trump said on election night" – that he would be the president of all Americans – "he absolutely meant from the bottom of his heart," Pence said.

But even as Pence tried to end the flap, Trump – who insulted Mexicans, Muslims and women among others during the campaign and so far has named only arch-conservative white men for his cabinet and senior adviser positions – kept at it.

Trump attacked the play and its cast for the second straight day and also criticized, again, another potent symbol of the left in America: the NBC TV comedy show "Saturday Night Live," which has ruthlessly ribbed Trump the candidate and now Trump the president-elect.

'Highly overrated'

Trump fired off a tweet again demanding an apology from the "Hamilton" cast and dismissing the award-winning musical as not that great.

"The cast and producers of Hamilton, which I hear is highly overrated, should immediately apologize to Mike Pence for their terrible behavior," Trump tweeted early Sunday morning.

Pence differed, saying, "If you haven’t seen the show, go and see it."

The wildly popular play, which won 11 Tony Awards in June – including best musical – follows young colonial rebels who became America's founding fathers, celebrating diversity and immigrants' contribution to the nation.

The show's lead actor, Javier Munoz, is openly gay, HIV positive and a cancer survivor.

Among other concerns, activists worry that the Trump's administration will be hostile to gay rights.

Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays vice president Aaron Burr, read a statement to Pence during the curtain call that echoed some of the main concerns critics have voiced since Trump won the election on November 8.

Thanking Pence for attending the performance, Dixon asked him to "hear us out."

"We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir," Dixon said.

"But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us. All of us."

"Hamilton," Dixon told Pence, was performed by "a diverse group of men, women of different colors, creeds and orientations."

The audience cheered and applauded loudly.

The crowd had greeted Pence with a mix of boos and cheers when he entered the theater before the show.

During the performance, the audience gave a standing ovation at the line "immigrants, we get the job done," theatergoer Christy Colburn tweeted.

Although Pence was leaving the auditorium when Dixon began reading his statement from the stage, he stood by the entrance to hear the entire message. He made no comment.

In the latest edition (November 19) of "Saturday Night Live," Trump as played by Alec Baldwin is depicted, once in the Oval Office, as being overwhelmed as he sets about fulfilling campaign promises such as defeating the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS.

"Google, what is ISIS?" Trump says as he pecks away at a laptop. "Oh my, 59 million results."

MANILA, Philippines – Acclaimed filmmaker Mike de Leon announced that journalist Atom Araullo will play the title role in his upcoming film Citizen Jake.

According to a report from the Inquirer, Araullo will be on board for the film, after discussing with his bosses in ABS-CBN. Araullo recently confirmed that he resigned from his job as a reporter, but remains a talent.

"I just couldn’t say no to Mike de Leon. I am taking this leap of faith because I believe in his ability to produce films of exceptional quality that are always imbued with social relevance,” Araullo told Inquirer.

Araullo said that he and the director have been talking non-stop and even plans to collaborate on the screenplay together with writer Noel Pascual.

In the same report, de Leon known for his films such as Itim, Batch 81 and Sister Stella L said of Araullo: "Atom is a very intelligent person, with a deep social conscience—and he writes very well.”

He also said that Araullo's background as a journalist is an advantage.

"In the film, I am not using ‘starring Atom Araullo’…but ‘featuring Atom Araullo,’ instead.”

Although it's an unfamiliar territory for him, de Leon shared: "“This is a strange, but interesting experience for me…not only because it will probably be my last film, but because I’ve got an interesting subject matter.”

The director said that he's looking to set up his team befor Christmas and is currently working on the screenplay.  He has also yet to get other cast members.

Details of Citizen Jake have yet to be revealed, but de Leon said it will be about “the world of citizen journalists, social media and politics.”

Araullo, an Applied Physics graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman, started his broadcasting stint at a young age as part of the children's show 5 and Up before becoming a producer and field reporter at ABS-CBN News. But what is the Mannequin Challenge? The challenge involves people frozen in place like mannequins, as a video camera pans around the room. 

According to ABC's First Coast News, the Mannequin Challenge was started by a group of students from Edward H. White High School in Jacksonville, Florida, who decided to record themselves posing during class.

Before presenting the award for Country's favorite duo/group, Mark Cuban and Idina Menzel quipped about the aftermath of the US elections. Mark, a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton, said he expects not to be invited to the inaguration, while Idina, a Broadway superstar, shouted her love for the cast of Hamilton, after they addressed vice-president elect Mike Pence during a performance last week. MANILA, Philippines – Singer-comedian Blakdyak, best known as the singer behind hit novelty songs in the '90s, was found dead in his condominium unit in Manila on Monday, November 21. 

According to a tweet from GMA News, the body of the singer (real name Joseph Formoran Amoto) was found lifeless. ABS-CBN reported that his son found him dead around 6 pm. 

No other details about the cause of his death have been released as of posting.  

Blakdyak, who hails from Zambales, was well known for a number of songs including "Modelong Charing," "Noon At Ngayon," and "Asin At Paminta." He's also appeared in a few movies. 

In 2014, he made headlines when was arrested due to drug allegations. A 2015 report from ABS-CBN said that he had worked to recover after his arrest, planning on an an album with composer Lito Camo. – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA – Rap superstar Kanye West canceled a planned show in Los Angeles just hours before it was set to start, following a rant against fellow singer Beyonce and a public announcement of support for US President-elect Donald Trump.

The Forum, an indoor arena in the LA suburb of Inglewood where West had been scheduled to perform, tweeted less than three hours before Sunday's show that it was being scrapped. It said refunds would be made available at the point of purchase.

At a Saturday night show in Sacramento, West performed just three songs before berating other artists and Hillary Clinton, and cutting the performance short – and that was after showing up an hour and a half late – according to reports and video posted on social media. 

West said he was "hurt" because Beyonce supposedly said she would not perform at a certain show – likely the Grammys – unless she wins video of the year over him. 

"I've been sent here to give y'all my truth, even at the risk of my own life, even at the risk of my own success, my own career," West said. 

"Jay Z, call me, bro, you still ain’t called me... Jay Z, I know you got killers. Please don't send them at my head. Just call me. Talk to me like a man," he added, referring to the rapper.

West's sometime collaborator Jay Z and his wife Beyonce had campaigned for Clinton during the campaign, calling her a uniter.

The rapper then told the media to prepare to "write your passive aggressive Lebron James racist comments." 

"Get ready to have a field day, press, get ready, get ready, 'cause the show's over," he added, dropping the mic.

A visibly disappointed audience then launched into chants of "fuck you, Kanye." 

After a campaign in which fellow artists and African Americans overwhelmingly backed rival Hillary Clinton, the rapper told an audience late Thursday, November 17, that he did not vote – but would have chosen Trump if he had cast his ballot.

West said that Trump, who ran on cracking down on immigration and won through white working-class support, could help bring about change by exposing racism.

"I actually think that his approach was absolutely genius. Because it fucking works," said West, who has said he plans to run for president in 2020.

West in the past has backed Obama and famously irritated former president George W. Bush by suggesting he responded slowly to Hurricane Katrina because he did not care about African Americans.

LOS ANGELES, USA – Rap superstar Kanye West was hospitalized on Monday, November 21, with a "medical emergency" after canceling his tour, two days after a rambling onstage tirade against fellow artists Jay Z and Beyonce. (READ: Kanye West cancels LA concert after rant about Donald Trump, Beyonce)

The "Saint Pablo Tour" was set to run through December 31 but all 21 remaining shows have been canceled, a spokeswoman for promoter Live Nation told AFP. 

Hours later it emerged that West, 39, was being treated at a University of California, Los Angeles clinic, with gossip website TMZ reporting that he was undergoing psychiatric tests after being examined for exhaustion.    

Mike Lopez, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department, told Agence France-Presse officers had responded to an early afternoon "call of a disturbance" at an address in Los Angeles known to be the rapper's property.

"That disturbance became a medical emergency where the fire department came and treated the individual," he said, without naming West.

The multiple Grammy Award-winning musician did not immediately make any personal statement and his representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ quoted an unnamed source saying the rapper was pulling out of the tour because he was exhausted.

"He's been working around the clock on fashion design, both his own line and the Adidas line," the source was quoted as saying.

Since August, West has performed around 40 dates in Canada and the US, rapping above the stage on an innovative "floating" platform.

'Call me, bro'

He halted a gig in New York in the middle of his set when he was informed that his wife, reality TV queen Kim Kardashian, had been robbed at gunpoint in a hotel in Paris.

West has not spoken publicly about the incident but TMZ's source said time spent away from family had added to the rapper's stress.

He also criticized Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg for failing to give him $53m to get out of debt.

The rapper told an audience on Thursday that he did not vote but would have chosen Republican Donald Trump, sparking angry fans to boo the star and throw items on stage.

West – who has talked about plans to run for president in 2020 – earned $17.5 million this year, according to Forbes magazine, which placed him 11th in the list of hip hop's highest-paid superstars.

The magazine predicted West would lose around $10 million from the cancellation.

There was some support for the star on Twitter as well as an angry backlash, with fans accusing him of "crazy talk" and having "lost the plot." 

West himself raps about going off his medications on his latest album. On the song “Feedback,” he raps, “I been outta my mind a long time,” and “Name one genius that ain’t crazy.”
