MIAMI, USA – Hillary Clinton took to the stage with Jennifer Lopez in Miami late Saturday, October 29 when the music superstar performed a free concert in the rain to encourage early voting in the battleground state of Florida.

The 47-year-old actress, singer and dancer whose toned physique appeared to defy gravity, powered through some of her greatest hits, including "Let's Get Loud" and "On the Floor" before an exuberant crowd who cheered and danced as rain drenched the outdoor amphitheater.

The concert capped a day of campaigning in Florida for the Democrat nominee after America's top cop, FBI Director James Comey renewed his probe of her emails and her lead over Donald Trump narrowed.

Clinton lashed out at her Republican rival, accusing him of stoking fear, disgracing American democracy and insulting "one group of Americans after another, 10 days before the November 8 ballot. 

Trump fired up his raucous supporters on Saturday with a vow that "justice can at last be delivered" with regard to Clinton's emails – despite the FBI not putting any timeline on the new inquiry.

"Are we going to let Donald Trump get away with that? You're right. We're not," she said. "No matter what they throw at us, we don't back down. Not now. Not ever," the Democrat said.

"We just heard Jennifer perform Let's Get Loud, well I say let's get loud at the voting booth," the former secretary of state said.

"Don't wait another day to vote and lets get loud by knocking on doors, making calls, take out your phones," she said.

"Because if we turn out, we win!" she said to more cheers.

Although the rain came down heavily, the crowd seemed pretty pumped up as Lopez closed out with "On the Floor" and ticker tape paper dropped from the sky at the Bayfront Park Amphitheater.

On Saturday, the latest poll of polls by tracker site RealClearPolitics put Clinton 3.9% points ahead of Trump nationwide, down from a lead of 7.1 points just 10 days previously. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – After posting a picture of himself as Michael Jackson's character from the music video "Thriller," Jake Ejercito posted another photo on Sunday, October 30, this time pairing up with his daughter Ellie, his child with actress Andi Eigenmann.

The Instagram picture is of him and Ellie wearing a prince and princess costume. Jake captioned the photo: "I'll slay all your dragons for you, my princess."

Just last Sunday, October 23, Jake spoke up about being Ellie's father after Andi's sister Maxene revealed in a previous interview on Mo Twister's podcast show that Jake was Ellie's dad. 

“I mean, hindi naman deserve ni Ellie na, you know, na itago. (I mean, Ellie does not deserve to be hidden.)

“Never ko naman siyang ikinahiya, e,” he said. (I was never ashamed of her.)

Jake was also recently awarded the Best New Male Personality by the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) at the Star Awards for Music and Television. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Ellen DeGeneres loves Halloween, and this year, she sent her executive producer Andy Lassner along with singer Ariana Grande to the American Horror Story maze at Universal Studios Hollywood.

It's a yearly Halloween tradition at Ellen's show for Andy to go through a scary horror maze or two, often with a different companion each time. Last year, he took Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet, and this year, Ariana was Ellen's latest victim. 

In the video, Andy and Ariana walked through the maze as they met creepy looking characters based on the show produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. Poor Andy was seen holding onto Ariana tightly during parts of the maze and even left her at one point to face the monsters and ghouls. 

Ariana meanwhile tried to keep her cool but found herself holding to Andy as well as they made their way through the maze. 

After arriving at the end of the maze, Ariana said: "It wasn't bad."

"I didn't love that," Andy said. "I'm a little nervous."

"Somewhere in there is my heart," Ariana added.

Andy went through another maze this year, by the way. Ellen also sent Andy and his assistant Jacqueline to the Horror Night Exorcist maze. Watch the video below.

As a child who grew up in the province, I was inundated with tales of creatures of Philippine mythology. Some stories served as caution as in when my grandparents would advise me to chant “bari-bari” when passing through the backwoods so that the duende would not hoodwink me and would grant me safe passage through their territory.

Some dealt with my recalcitrance such as when my aunts would tell me to behave or else the Kapre would kidnap me, take me to his kingdom concealed within the cluster of acacia trees, and eventually roll me in a massive tobacco sheet and make a cigarette out of me.

These stories, by and large, and however cautionary, evoke fear. Accounts of these creatures in most regions in the country are replete with frightening descriptions of what they look like and what they can do to you if they take a liking to you or if you wittingly or otherwise invade their domicile.

For instance, the batibat, a demon in Iloko folklore, is described as a huge fat woman with a disfigured face that lives in a hole in a post, which used to be an old tree. She then visits houses of unsuspecting sleeping victims, usually those who felled its former home, and suffocates them to death. Another well-known mythological creature is the aswang,which is sometimes said to take on the form of an attractive and meek lady in the day but detaches its torso from its lower body and morphs into a terrifying creature at night. It preys upon the young and the unborn, often feeding on their liver and heart.

A reflection of society

As horrifying as they are described, these beings from the underworld are the staple of Filipino popular culture. The proliferation of such in komiksand movies show just how influential and effective they are in teaching values and instilling fear in the lives of Filipinos. The late Professor Maximo Ramos cited in his book, The Creatures of Philippine Lower Mythology, an instance where townsfolk in a barrio in southern Philippines would not dare cut down trees without asking the consent of the spirits they believe to reside in them.

But more than inculcating terror, these lower mythological creatures also function as metaphors reflecting the anxieties and fixations of a society, especially in a given historical moment as noted by cultural historians and authors Joseph Maddrey and David Skal. The monster in Homer’s Polyphemos and the vampire in European folktales, according to Jeffrey Jerome Cohen, author of the book, Monster Theory, represented the then-nascent fear of the growing racialized immigrant communities in the continent. In the early 1800s, Mary Shelley’s monster, popularly known as Frankenstein’s monster, denoted distress over developing complex scientific advancements of that time. Similarly, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s The Incredible Hulk was said to symbolize the perils of the atomic age, while George A. Romero’s Zombie was believed to be a social commentary on industrial automation and mindless consumerism.

Other monsters and mythological creatures in Middle-Age Europe represented gender and racial anxieties, noted by Cohen. Given that most story tellers then were male and European, it’s interesting to note that women and people of color were represented in stories as witches and werewolves and such as they were thought to threaten the status quo of the patriarchal society.

The fears that these western creatures epitomize are almost similar to what their local counterparts represent. Professor Maximo Ramos wrote that during the Spanish all the way to the American period, people living in far flung areas in Northern and Southern Philippines were conditioned to be wary of the dayo or foreigners who may disrupt their way of living. The shapeshifting aswang in their folktales symbolized non-natives. Townsmen were encouraged to court and marry women within their barangays lest they bring ill fortune and danger to their community. The duende, kapre, batibat and aghoy expressed the ill effects of the then-burgeoning industrialization, deforestation and environmental decay, and urbanization. Almost all stories involving these monsters and creatures caution natives to be extra vigilant in preserving the flora and fauna.

Fearing what we don’t understand

As these folkloric creatures typically come from a mystical realm unknown to us, coming out mostly at night and attacking in the dark, they essentially mirror our human fear of what we do not understand. We avoid certain places and people, and shut down ideas because in actuality we fear the uncertain and unfamiliar. Some people consult fortune tellers, carry around anting-anting, and make chanting noises to ward off perceived evil elements and misfortunes.

Although these monsters are arguably linked to prohibited practices to reinforce good values and acceptable behavior, they also represent a kind of desire to make sense of and overcome seemingly unexplainable and hopeless situations, a desire for heroism and nobility to arise. And our folklore is filled with champions. There is a collective desire to combat corruption, environmental degradation, drugs and criminality, and moral abasement, for justice, equality, peace and truth. There is yearning to understand how our current society came to be and transcend practices and beliefs that keep us from progressing as a nation.

The aggression and domination these creatures symbolize are expressed within the constraints of liminality, which can evoke escapist fantasies. Every Halloween, people the world over celebrate the macabre for a night. There’s tolerable levels of freight and horror in movies and literature. We take comfort in that fact that, at the end of a terrifying story, the monster will be slain, the hero prevails. All because deep down, we believe it is only temporary and what comes after is liberation. – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA – Michael Douglas ended months of speculation over fellow actor Val Kilmer's health on Monday, October 31 by confirming his friend was suffering from cancer, several reports said on Monday.

Douglas reportedly told the audience at an event in London over the weekend that Kilmer, his co-star in 1996's The Ghost and the Darkness, is "dealing with exactly what I had," referring to oral cancer.

He added that "things don't look too good" for the 56-year-old, best known for his role in Top Gun and as singer Jim Morrison in The Doors.

"My prayers are with him. That's why you haven't heard too much from Val lately," Douglas, 72, told host Jonathan Ross, according to the London-based Daily Telegraph newspaper and US entertainment industry bible Variety.

Kilmer has repeatedly denied reports that he is unwell, but his health has been the subject of persistent speculation since pictures showed him apparently with a tracheotomy tube last year. 

Kilmer's representatives did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

But Kilmer issued an oblique denial that he was incapacitated in a Facebook post promoting Cinema Twain, a filmed version of his one-man play about Mark Twain.

"I'm having so much fun sharing the role I created for my stage play Citizen Twain," he wrote.

"'The recent news of my death has been greatly exaggerated...' Mark Twain," he joked, using a widely misquoted line from the author.

"And his values and spirit live on even now! And I'm sure still standing! Yippee!"

LOS ANGELES,USA – One of the most sought-after names in Hollywood at the height of his career, Oscar-winning Mel Gibson has been a pariah in the filmmaking community for a decade.

Ostracized by Tinseltown after an anti-Semitic tirade captured on tape during a 2006 drunk-driving arrest, the actor-director has since had to make do with a handful of parts in obscure or poorly received films.

It is a far cry from the adulation he enjoyed as the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon films established him as a star, before he went on to win Academy Awards for producing and directing 1996's Braveheart.

As he unveils his new faith-based World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge this weekend, the 60-year-old devout Catholic will be hoping cinemagoers have shorter memories than movie executives.

The film tells the true story of Desmond Doss, played by Andrew Garfield, who enlists and is determined to save lives on the front line as a medic, but refuses to carry a gun on moral grounds.

"It highlights what it means for a man of conviction and of faith to go into a situation that is hellish... and in the midst of that maelstrom, this man is able to hone his spirituality and achieve something higher," Gibson told a recent news conference in Beverly Hills.

He had been asked to comment on the film's brutal violence but could have been describing his own baptism of fire back in the glare of the Hollywood press pack.    

  Alcoholism 

Asked about his own faith, Gibson looked uncomfortable and responded simply that he was "imperfect" and a "poor practitioner" who could take a leaf out of Doss's book.

If Gibson's return to the director's chair is as successful as reviews of Hacksaw Ridge suggest it ought to be, he may have to get used to answering awkward questions about his private life again.

Hacksaw Ridge is Gibson's first directing effort since the critically-acclaimed Apocalypto in 2006 – the year of his anti-Semitic rant at a US sheriff's deputy.

During the high-profile arrest in Malibu, north of Los Angeles, Gibson said Jews were responsible for all the wars in the world.

He later apologized, blaming alcoholism, but he had already been facing accusations of anti-Semitism following the release of his controversial 2004 movie The Passion of the Christ.

Gibson and his wife of 26 years Robyn Moore split up soon after, and there were no more starring roles on the big screen until the lackluster thriller Edge of Darkness.

Even after his acting comeback, the controversies surrounding the star were far from over.

Gibson was spared jail in 2011 when he decided not to contest domestic violence charges pressed by Russian pianist Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his seven-year-old daughter Lucia.

'Directorial chops' 

Gibson – who is expecting a 9th child later this year with 26-year-old girlfriend Rosalind Ross – was sentenced to 3 years of probation and ordered to attend domestic violence counseling.

He won critical acclaim for his role in close friend Jodie Foster's The Beaver, but the 2011 film was a commercial flop, with Entertainment Weekly concluding that audiences had stayed away because of Gibson.

He has since faced further accusations of anti-Semitic and aggressive behavior, which he has strenuously denied.

In a recent podcast with Variety magazine, Gibson said he was trying to put the 2006 incident behind him, and found it "annoying" that people were still bringing it up. 

"Ten years have gone by. I'm feeling good. I'm sober, all of that kind of stuff, and for me it's a dim thing in the past," he said.

By Monday next week, the opening box office figures for Hacksaw Ridge will indicate whether the public has forgiven him.

"I think, (with) all directors who have touched greatness before, Hollywood, and audiences in general, have a willingness to take a chance on them again," said Jeff Bock, a senior analyst at industry monitor Exhibitor Relations. 

"Gibson has proven that he has directorial chops that transcend the often mediocre multiplex offerings. With Hacksaw Ridge, he seems to have the critical support as well, so that bodes well for playability through the holiday season." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Paolo Valenciano and wife photographer/ graphic artist Samantha Godinez  welcomed their daughter Nataleia Martine at 1:21 am, on Wednesday, November 2. 

The news was posted on the social media accounts of Manila Genesis Entertainment Inc.

"Photographer/graphic designer Samantha Godinez-Valenciano gave birth to Nataleia Martine – her first child with husband director/singer Paolo Valenciano on November 2 at 1:21am at an undisclosed hospital. Samantha is the daughter of sound expert Jaime and Gina (Tabuena) Godinez. Nataleia "Leia" Martine who weighed 7.9 lbs is the very first grandchild of the Godinez couple, as well as Paolo's parents, singer/performer Gary V and his wife Angeli (Pangilinan) Valenciano," the announcement said.

In the same announcement, Paolo expressed his joy over the birth of his daughter and his wife's courage. His brother Gab and sister Kiana as well as Sam's family were also present at the hospital.

"I'll never look at a mother the same way again. They are the superior species! I can't believe I'm a dad," he said.

Angeli Pangilinan Valenciano posted this message on Twitter after the birth of her granddaughter.

"So Gary and I are brand new grandparents to Nataleia Martine "Leia" Godinez Valenciano. 7.9lbs. Our family is extremely blessed! Praise God!"

Paolo and Samantha  announced they were expecting their first child earlier this year. (READ: Paolo Valenciano, wife Samantha Godinez expecting baby girl)

In an interview last June at the UNICEF (United Nations Children's Emergency Fund) and Cebu Pacific event, Gary Valenciano said that his grandchild will call him "Papi."

"'Lolo' is not applicable to me. It's 'Papi.' So it's 'Papi Gary, Papi Gary V'," he said.

MANILA, Philippines – Who is Santino Rosales? Jericho Rosales' 15-year-old son with model Kai Palomares recently spent some time in the spotlight after being featured as part of this year's roster of Candy Cuties – Candy magazine's yearly roundup of handsome young men.

Santino's feature could be the first step in following in his dad's footsteps, but as many curious reporters learned at the Candy Fair last Saturday, October 29,

Santino isn't too keen on entering showbiz.

"I mean, ever since I was a young kid, I knew that I didn't want to get into showbiz because I knew how hassle it is and how tight the schedule is, and I can't handle that because I have other priorities in life," he said.

Right now, he's focused on football, and plans on going into business in the future.

He's already testing the waters on his entrepreneurial dreams, starting up a venture with a friend of his, where they turn old car parts into furniture: "We had this trade expo at school and then we decided, okay, let's do something out of the box. He had some extra car parts because he has a car shop so we decided, let's innovate it, let's make it something people want," Santino explained.

As for football, Santino plays defense for two teams: Kaya Football Club's under 17 team and his school team, Colegio San Agustin in Makati.

MANILA, Philippines – The production of a documentary about Jennifer Laude has been funded by the Sundance Institute, the organization announced on Monday, October 31.

Justice for Jennifer follows the death of Jennifer Laude, a Filipino transgender woman who was killed by US Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton in 2014.

Pemberton was convicted of homicide in 2015, following a trial where he admitted to strangling Laude after he discovered she had male genitals.

Pemberton appealed to reverse his conviction in January, but lost his appeal. However, his jail term was reduced from 12 years to 10.

A summary of the documentary on the Sundance site describes: "Grassroots activists in the Philippines are spurred into action when a local transgender woman is found dead in a motel room with a 19-year-old US marine as the leading suspect. As they demand answers and a just trial, hidden histories of U.S. colonization come bubbling to the surface."

Justice for Jennifer is directed by award-winning filmmaker PJ Raval, who is behind documentaries like Before You Know It– about 3 gay men over the age of 55 – and Trinidad– which explores Trinidad, Colorado as the "sex-change capital of the world."

Aside from Sundance, Raval's website says that Justice for Jennifer is also supported by the Guggenheim Foundation, Bertha Foundation, Arcus Foundation, Center of Asian-American Media, Firelight Media, Austin Film Society, and the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division.

Justice for Jennifer is also part of the Bertha Foundation Fellowship, a fellowship by Sundance in partnership with the Bertha Foundation. It offers financial, creative, legal, and strategic resources to documentary filmmakers.

The documentary is produced by Marty Syjuco, who is behind the Emmy-nominated Give Up Tomorrow, Sara Giustini, who worked with Raval on Before You Know It, and Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala, contributing producer to CNN, president of the ICANSERVE Foundation, and founding partner of AsianEye Productions and Storytellers International Inc.

MANILA, Philppines – The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has summoned the directors, producer, and writer of the show Till I Met You to discuss episodes that aired on October 25, 27, 27, and 28. 

In a letter dated November 2, signed by MTRCB chairman Eugenio "Toto" Villareal, directors Antoinette Jadaone, Andoy Ranay, executive producer Arnel Nacario, and writer Shugo Praico were called to attend the November 10 conference.

The October 25 episode was the first to receive complaints, as it included a sex scene between James Reid and Nadine Lustre's characters.

According to the MTRCB's letter, "some audiences found [the scene] to be unfit for television (despite its "SPG" advisory)."

In the October 26 episode, the line "sex lang yan (it's just sex)" was mentioned, while the October 27 and 28 episodes had alleged "sexually teasing" scenes, as well as "outrightly-sexually charged bath-related scenes."

"With the above, considering that 'PG' and 'SPG' ratings still admit the reality of having young audiences, the Board shall expect you to present your side at the said conference which shall be before a Committee particulady designated for the matter," wrote the MTRCB.

LOS ANGELES, USA – Val Kilmer has denied claims by fellow actor Michael Douglas that the Top Gun star has cancer, saying on social media that his friend was "misinformed."

Douglas, 72, told an audience in London over the weekend that Kilmer, his co-star in 1996's The Ghost and the Darkness, was "dealing with exactly what I had," referring to oral cancer. (READ: Michael Douglas says Val Kilmer has cancer – reports)

Kilmer's health has been the subject of persistent speculation since pictures showed him apparently with a tracheotomy tube last year. 

"I love Michael Douglas but he is misinformed," Kilmer posted on Facebook on Tuesday, November 2, adding that he hadn't spoken to Douglas for nearly two years.

"I asked him for a referral for a specialist to get a diagnosis for a lump in my throat which prevented me from continuing a tour of my play Citizen Twain," Kilmer wrote, referring to his one-man show about the author Mark Twain.

"I ended up using a team at UCLA and have no cancer whatsoever. I still have a swollen tongue and am rehabbing steadily."

Commentators have pointed out that while Kilmer insists he is healthy now, he did not deny ever having been struck down with cancer.

The actor acknowledged that his recent silence may have stoked speculation that he was putting his Christian Scientist faith – which stresses the primacy of prayer over medical treatment – ahead of his health.

Kilmer had already issued what appeared to be an oblique denial in a Facebook post promoting a film of his play – saying Twain's "values and spirit live on even now! And I'm sure still standing!"

Fans appeared not to be satisfied, however, prompting Kilmer to be more explicit in the follow-up post.

"Whatever led Michael Douglas to speculate about my health, he's a loving and devoted friend to a privileged group of (talented) people around the world, and I'm sure he meant no harm," Kilmer said. 

Two-time Oscar winner Douglas revealed in 2010 that he was battling stage 4 throat cancer, but beat the disease thanks to a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – A blind Filipino singer received a standing ovation from the judges and audience of of France Got Talent as she sang "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables.

Katchry Jewel Golbin, 25, who goes by the name Alienette Colfire on social media, also made judge Helena Segara emotional during her performance, which aired on November 1.

After her performance, Alienette was told that she was moving on to the next round of the competition. 

According to a report from TeleStar, Alienette learned how to speak French at the age of 3 years old so that she could understand the song "La Vie En Rose" by Edith Piaf.

Singer Ogie Alcasid, who met Alienette years back, posted a message on Instagram.

"I have always believed in your wonderful gift Katchry (Alienette). Finally the world will hear you. So proud of you. So proud. Katchry made it to the semifinals of France Got Talent," he said.
