MANILA, Philippines – James Reid, Nadine Lustre, and their friends recently climbed Mt Ulap in Itogon, Benguet, and James posted his own photo of him and Nadine enjoying the sunrise together during the hike.

In the post, shared late on Saturday, January 10, James and Nadine are seated side by side and are looking at the stunning view of the sun rising over the ridge of Mt Ulap.

Other photos in the post show James with his friends, and another photo of just the sunset.

In the caption, James wrote a vague verse that is open to interpretation:

“I’ve come to understand that what we’re looking for is found in the absence of searching
And the answer found in the absence of questions.
If you know what I mean, it’s time to tune in.
If you don’t... then aren’t you lucky.
So this is me, tuning in”

This is James’ first Instagram post with Nadine for weeks – and seems to put to  restrumors that the couple have broken up.

It was, after all, the pair’s absence on each other’s Instagram feeds that Pep cited in its explosive January 1 report as indicating that the two had parted ways.

Soon after the report was released though, eagle-eyed fans dug up photos of the couple spending time together during the holidays with each others’ families.

Nadine later contradicted the breakup news when she called out Philippine Star writer Ricky Lo, who said that Pep’s report of JaDine’s split was “true and not fake news."

"None of what you said was true,” Nadine said on Instagram stories, as she blasted Ricky for saying that James was "handling the breakup with care" because Nadine was grappling with mental health issues.

"It is never okay to use someone’s mental situation/tragic past just to prove a point. Mental illness is a very sensitive matter," she said.

James and Nadine have been a love team since 2013, and have been together in real life since February 2016. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – After performing at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, Grammy-nominated singer Lizzo spread the love off stage as she dropped by the warehouse of a nonprofit in Victoria to thank volunteers that have been working to help those affected by the Australia bushfires.

On their Facebook page on January 8, Foodbank Australia said, "Beautiful Lizzo stopped by our Foodbank Victoria warehouse today to thank our hardworking team and vollies who have been working tirelessly for the past 6 days."

"What a star. She even packed hampers for fire-affected regions. Thank you for the support," they said.

The post included two photos of Lizzo packing relief goods and smiling with a volunteer.

The nonprofit also shared photos and a video of Lizzo's visit on their Instagram.

The Australian bushfires – which started in September – have been the worst the country has seen in years. The disaster has destroyed over 2,000 homes and burned rougly 8 million hectares of land.

It has also caused the death of an estimated one billion animals, and has left a toxic smoke haze over Australia's major cities.

The destruction has prompted many celebrities to donate to bushfire relief efforts – including Aussie A-listers Nicole Kidman, Russel Crowe, Chris Hemsworth, and Margot Robbie. Lizzo also previously pledged to donate.

Fil-Aussie celebrities including Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray and actress Anne Curtis have also called for help, linking relief organizations on their social media pages, and encouraging their followers to donate. – Rappler.com

PLAYLIST: A celebration of dance pop and the immortality of 'Tala'

$

MANILA, Philippines – Arguably the most inspirational song of the decade is something none of us could have predicted: Sarah Geronimo's "Tala" – yes, that LSS-inducing song people have been dancing to all over the internet.

The song was released as the lead single on Sarah's 2015 album, The Great Unknown– and it made a huge impact on landing. Critics warmly received the way the song infused mainstream pop with a tribal feel in the percussions. And fans couldn't get enough of the catchy chorus that sang, of course, of Filipino listeners' favorite subject, love.

When the "Tala" music video was released in June 2016, the song made even more of a dent in Pinoy pop culture as the nation beheld their beloved wholesome ate Sarah – then still known as the Pop Princess – showing off a totally different side of herself.

It certainly wasn't like the jump Britney Spears made going from "Sometimes" to "Slave 4 U." But the video – with Sarah impressively nailing some tricky dance sequences in a tattoeed bodysuit – cemented the idea (if her two previous hits "Kilometro" and "Ikot-Ikot" hadn't already) that Sarah was a talented triple threat who does not come to play.

Over time though, the "Tala" hype slowly faded as OPM gave way to folk-pop and funk-rock. For 3 years, the shine of "Tala" remained largely forgotten by mainstream listeners – occassionally being taken out of the baul for the odd cover here and there.

Of course, on the drag circuit, it was a different story – and many, including Sarah herself, credit the reemergence of the song to the LGBTQ+ community, and particularly to Bench Hipolito, a drag queen and Sarah Geronimo impersonator, who featured the song in many of her performances.

By late 2019, years after its initial release, "Tala" had become ubiquitous once again.

Pretty much everyone who can follow the choreography (and even some who can't) have shared their own dance covers online. Even inmates at the San Juan City Jail got in on the action.

Sunday variety show ASAP Natin 'To even held a "Grand Tala Day" to celebrate the song that has become a national obssession 4 years after it was first released.

By this point it's safe to say that "Tala" has eclipsed its own impact when it first came out – and we're all for it.

In fact, we are so for it , that we've compiled a bunch of "Tala"-adjacent tracks from mostly Pinoy pop artists – with a little K-pop thrown into the mix for good measure.

With the same upbeat vibe, same danceability, and the same LSS potential, these songs are a reminder that when life gets rough, there is always a reason to dance – as "Tala" was, and, apparently now, always will be.

MANILA, Philippines – Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia admitted that they miss each other's company after parting ways both romantically and professionally in 2019.

At the press conference for the movie Block Z on Saturday, January 11, Julia and Joshua said that in fact, they were doing okay.  "Okay naman kami. Actually, 'nung nakita ko siya... ito personally, na miss ko din siya kasi ang tagal namin hindi nagkasama. Na busy siya, na busy ako," Joshua said of Julia.

(We're okay. Actually, when I saw her... personally, I miss her because we have not been together for a while. She was busy, I was busy.)

Julia added: "We're okay. Thank you for asking. And that's one of the things that I'm super grateful for is that we're able to protect and make sure that the friendship will stay, will remain."

"And tama siya (he's right). When I first saw him it felt familiar... it's a familiar place, a comfortable, safe place."

The two, who've worked together for different TV and movie projects, confirmed in 2019 that they were back to just being friends. Despite their breakup, the two have been supportive of each other's work. (READ: Joshua Garcia tells Julia Barretto: You're the strongest girl I know)

Julia found herself in the middle of controversy last year after actress Bea Alonzo posted cryptic messages pertaining to betrayal and hurt. Around the same time, an anonymous user posted a photo of Julia and Between Maybes co-star Gerald Anderson at the birthday party of actor Rayver Cruz, and insinuated that the two were more than friends.

Julia defended herself from the accusations, chastizing Bea for "bullying" her. Gerald denied allegations that Julia was involved in his breakup with Bea.

OSCAR BOOST. 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood' continues to win awards, winning Best Film and Best Supporting Actor for brad Pitt at the Critics Choice Awards. Screenshot from YouTube/Sony Pictures Entertainment

LOS ANGELES, USA –  Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood backed up its Oscars frontrunner status by scooping best picture at the Critics' Choice Awards on Sunday, January 12.

The high-profile awards in Santa Monica – which also honor the best of television – are seen as a barometer for the all-important Oscars, for which nominations are due out Monday.

"I agree with the critics for the very first time," joked Tarantino as he collected Brad Pitt's best supporting actor prize, before returning to the stage for the evening's top award.

Tarantino's love letter to 1960s Tinseltown, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and set against the backdrop of the Manson family murders, also won for best original screenplay and production design.

With the Golden Globe best comedy prize already secured, the movie appears well-placed for next month's Oscars.

British director Sam Mendes and South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho shared honors after the closely watched best director category ended in a tie.

Mendes' sweeping World War I odyssey 1917 also took home editing and cinematography awards, while Bong's black comedy Parasite was named best foreign-language film.

"Today I was just enjoying the vegan burger and trying to enjoy the ceremony," joked Bong as he collected his prize.

The awards had emulated last week's Globes by serving a plant-based menu, to boost environmental awareness.

And on the acting front, most of the prizes followed the favorites established by the Globes.

Joaquin Phoenix and Renee Zellweger further bolstered their Oscar odds by picking up the top acting gongs for Joker and Judy.

Laura Dern and Pitt also continued their supporting actor sweeps, earning further honors for their turns in Marriage Story and Once Upon a Time...

Eddie Murphy received a massive standing ovation as he collected the event's lifetime achievement award, before his blaxploitation biopic Dolemite Is My Name won best comedy.

Robert De Niro expressed surprise as he and Al Pacino collected the best acting ensemble prize for The Irishman.

"I wasn't expecting it, frankly, at this point," he said, after the crime epic – an early Oscars frontrunner – was shut out at the Globes and missed out on several anticipated acting nominations elsewhere.

Fleabag topped the television awards, collecting three gongs including best comedy to continue its impressive award season run. Succession won best drama series.

Ava DuVernay thanked Netflix for "letting a black woman do her thing" as When They See Us, the true story of five ethnic minority teenagers wrongly accused of raping a New York jogger, won best limited series.

"Thank you to the critics for finally letting us take the stage," she added, after the acclaimed show fared poorly at the Emmys and Globes. Jharrel Jherome dedicated his acting win to "the 'Exonerated Five'."

The annual event held by the Critics Choice Association at an airplane hangar near Los Angeles was again hosted by actor Taye Diggs.

The Oscars will be handed out in Hollywood on February 9. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Kpop idol group EXO vocalist Chen is getting married. The news was confirmed by the group's management, SM Entertainment on Monday, January 13.

SM Entertainment said that Chen, whose real name is Kim Jongdae, and his non-celebrity fiancee will be wed in a private ceremony, according to a translation posted by Soompi. SM Entertainment also confirmed that Chen and his future wife are expecting.

"Chen has met someone precious to him and will be getting married. The bride is a non-celebrity, and the wedding will be held privately with only their families in attendance. To respect their families’ opinions, the wedding and everything related to it will be held privately, so we ask fans and reporters for their kind understanding," SM Entertainment said, as translated by Soompi.

Koreaboo, meanwhile, said SM Entertainment has chosen not to disclose neither the identity of the womana and the details of her pregnancy since "she is not a celebrity."

The agency said Chen will continue to work as an artist.

Chen himself had revealed his planned wedding and hinted at his partner's pregnancy in an open letter.

"At first, I was worried about the consequences of my decision. But I was discussing it with the label and the members on how to deliver this, so you won't be surprised out of the blue," Chen wrote, according to a translation provided by Allkpop

"But then I was graced with good news. Now that I couldn't do what I have been planning with my label and members, I worked up my courage, though I am not fully prepared. I couldn't hold it any longer."

Oscar nominees emerge as awards row rages over female snubs

OSCAR NOISE. Sam Mendes' '1917' and Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood,' are getting a lot of buzz for the Oscars after winning top prizes at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards. Screenshots from YouTube/Sony Pictures Entertainment/Universal Pictures

LOS ANGELES, USA– The Oscar nominations will reveal Monday, January 13 which stars and movies have a shot at Hollywood's ultimate prize, as the industry nervously awaits the number of women and minorities selected.

The pre-dawn Academy Award announcement caps months of ceaseless campaigning by A-listers and studios, with only the chosen few progressing to next month's show-stopper.

Favorites for best picture include Quentin Tarantino's 1960s Tinseltown homage Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, and Sam Mendes's World War I odyssey 1917. Both won major honors at the recent Golden Globes.

Martin Scorsese's crime epic The Irishman and South Korean class satire Parasite are also expected to feature. Up to 10 films can be nominated for the top prize.

Much of the focus so far this award season has been on the lack of women and ethnic minority filmmakers honored.

Neither the Globes nor the influential Directors Guild Awards included any female-helmed films in their top categories, with Greta Gerwig's acclaimed Little Women adaptation notably absent.

Controversy over those omissions, in an industry criticized for its lack of diversity, was fueled at last week's Bafta nominations, which were also condemned for overlooking ethnic minorities.

One Academy voter who asked not to be named said he was "anticipating that it's likely going to be very controversial" again Monday because "a lot of male directors" will be nominated.

"Unfortunately there are just five nominees" for best director in an "incredibly strong year," he told AFP, pointing to the revered track records of Scorsese, Tarantino and Mendes.

The Academy "want to choose the best but they also want to be sensitive to women and minorities," said Chris Beachum, of award tracking website Gold Derby.

Non-white stars such as Lupita Nyong'o, Cynthia Erivo, and Awkwafina could feature alongside best actress frontrunners Renee Zellweger and Charlize Theron, he predicted, while Eddie Murphy is in the running for best actor.

"Greta (Gerwig) certainly has a shot at becoming the first woman to get in for (best) director twice," Beachum added, referring to her nomination for 2017's Lady Bird.

Competitive best actor field

Voting for Oscar nominees ended last Tuesday, two days after the Golden Globes, meaning success there could have provided a late bump for borderline candidates.

Taron Egerton, who plays Elton John in Rocketman, faces a tough challenge to crack into a competitive best actor field expected to feature the likes of Joaquin Phoenix (Joker.)

But he may be aided by his Globes success, Beachum said.

Renee Zellweger, who won best actress at the Globe, is widely seen as a shoo-in for the Oscars shortlist, thanks to her acclaimed turn as showbiz legend Judy Garland in Judy.

Awards pundits will also be checking to see how the best picture frontrunners fare in other Oscars nominations categories.

1917 has relative unknowns in its main roles, meaning acting nods would be a strong indicator of overall success, said Beachum.

An editing nomination for the film, shot to appear as it were almost one continuous shot, would also speak volumes, he added.

 'Theatrical experience'

Despite its disappointment at the Globes, where it won just one movie award, Netflix still has more contenders than any other studio – and is likely to bag plenty of nominations.

"They'll win some Oscars," said Beachum. "Every year that they've been in the Oscar race they've improved on nominations and wins."

As well as Irishman, the small-screen streaming giant should grab nods for divorce drama Marriage Story, Vatican-set The Two Popes and Murphy's blaxploitation biopic Dolemite Is My Name.

But one Academy voter warned that "some members will, as filmmakers, want to preserve the theatrical experience" by choosing films from traditional studios which have long, exclusive runs in movie theaters.

Some 9,000 Academy members vote for the Oscars.

In the round of voting just closed, members were asked to rank their top choices only for best picture, and for the specific Academy branch to which they belong.

Voting for winners – in which members can vote in every category – begins January 30, closing five days later.

The Oscars will be handed out in Hollywood on February 9. – Rappler.com

NEW YORK, USA – American model Gigi Hadid appeared as a potential juror in disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein's rape and sexual assault trial on Monday, January 13 (Tuesday, January 14 in the Philippines) adding a fresh celebrity twist to the high-profile proceedings.

Hadid, 24, raised her hand in the New York state court when Judge James Burke asked the dozens appearing for jury selection whether any of them knew Weinstein or his legal team.

"I have met the defendant," said Hadid, sitting in the jury box.

Burke then asked her if she could be fair and impartial. "Yes," she replied.

Hadid – who has modeled for a host of top fashion brands including Chanel and Victoria's Secret –said she had also met Salma Hayek.

The Mexican-born actress has accused Weinstein, 67, of sexual harassment and may be mentioned in court during the trial.

"I think I'm still able to keep an open mind on the facts," Hadid told the Manhattan court.

Hadid appeared alongside 120 or so other jury candidates as pre-screening of potential jurors entered its second week.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys are trying to select 12 jurors and 6 alternates. They have already questioned more than 500 candidates.

Scores have already been excused after saying they could not be impartial due to heightened publicity surrounding the trial, which is expected to run until early March.

Following her appearance, Hadid was due to fill out a questionnaire before returning later this week for further screening.

It is likely, however, that the defense would challenge the selection of a social media star with more than 51 million Instagram followers.

Weinstein has been accused of sexual assault  by more than 80 women since accusations against him ignited the #MeToo movement in October 2017.

But he is being tried on charges related to just two. He faces life in prison if found guilty of predatory sexual assault.

Opening arguments are expected to begin on January 22. – Rappler.com

SAN FRANCISCO, USA –  Mark Hamill, the actor famous for legendary Star Wars film character Luke Skywalker, has quit Facebook for its refusal to require political ads to be honest.

"So disappointed that #MarkZuckerberg values profit more than truthfulness that I've decided to delete my Facebook account," Hamill tweeted Sunday evening, January 12.

"I know this is a big 'Who Cares?' for the world at large, but I'll sleep better at night. #PatriotismOverProfits."

Hamill's message triggered a flood of replies, with many lauding his decision to use his celebrity platform to make a statement about honesty in politics.

"Facebook, pay attention. You’ve lost the man who played Luke Skywalker," one fan commented.

"The only thing worse than that is maybe Santa Claus telling you to feck off. Might be time to rethink things."

In contrast, another tweet questioned whether it was Facebook's place to censor politicians or their ads, and suggested instead putting notice labels on demonstrably false messages.

"Giving up Facebook doesn't solve the problem," the Twitter user replied to Hamill.

"Fake news is everywhere. What happens next? Give up the internet?"

Facebook this month enacted a new ban on posts or ads that interfere with people taking part in the US census, which will have an online participation option this year.

The census interference policy forbids deception about when or how to take part in the US census, or the significance of participating, according to the California-based internet titan.

Facebook, criticized for its hands-off policy  on misleading comments from politicians, said it would not allow political actors to post false information about the census, in a policy similar to theirs on "voter interference."

Online platforms face the challenge of stopping an avalanche of disinformation while remaining open to political debate and free speech.

Google recently placed restrictions on how advertisers can target specific groups of voters, while clarifying its policy by indicating it does not allow "false claims" in advertising, political or otherwise.

Twitter has banned most kinds of political ads to steer clear of checking the veracity of claims by politicians, but some analysts say the ban ends up helping incumbents and well-financed candidates. – Rappler.com
