How to make it in Bollywood, or die trying

MUMBAI, India – It took a minute for Malhaar Rathod, then an aspiring teenage actress, to realize what the 65-year-old Indian film producer was asking her to do – and to make the decision to walk away.

"He claimed he had a part for me and then asked me to lift my top. I got so scared, I didn't know what to do at first," Rathod, now an up-and-coming television star, told AFP in Mumbai.

Her experience with what is euphemistically known as Bollywood's "casting couch" culture underlines the challenges facing anyone seeking to break into India's massive, insiders-only film industry, where the #MeToo movement has secured few wins.

After #MeToo triggered the downfall of top Hollywood powerbrokers like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, many women in Bollywood spoke up about their experience of sexual harassment, breaking a long-established culture of silence.

The Indian industry has largely looked the other way however and many of the alleged perpetrators have been able to revive their careers after lying low for a few months.

Movie-mad India is the world's largest producer of films, with around 1,800 releases a year in multiple languages, easily dwarfing Hollywood's output – but forging a career in the nepotistic industry can be a challenge.

Unlike the children of celebrities who are groomed for stardom and tailor-made debuts, outsiders have to fend off lecherous men and contend with a gruelling routine of auditions and rejections.

'Dream come true'

"It's very difficult to crack Bollywood if you don't have connections. No-one is going to offer you a launch, you have to do small parts and work your way up," actor Paras Tthukral told AFP.

"I have done all kinds of jobs to survive. Worked in a call center, in corporate gifting, marketing, you name it," Tthukral, who moved to Mumbai in 2008 and has since appeared in two TV shows and a couple of films, added.

"An alternative career would have been easier for sure... but being an actor is a dream come true."

Rathod is one of the lucky ones. After her early brush with the casting couch, she is now a familiar face to Indian viewers, appearing in advertisements for global skincare brands including Garnier and Dove.

The sole breadwinner for a family of five including two younger sisters, she has managed to make inroads into television with a part in the hit show Hostages on India's Disney-owned streaming platform Hotstar.

The 25-year-old is hoping to see that success translate to the silver screen, following in the footsteps of film stars such as Preity Zinta and Deepika Padukone who began their Bollywood career with advertisements.

But she is keenly aware that it could all disappear in a flash.

"Waiting to hear back about roles has given me sleepless nights," she said, adding that she has recently turned to prayer and meditation in a bid to calm her mind.

"You can't have too many expectations, otherwise you will be perpetually disappointed."

For every success story, there are tens of thousands of aspiring actors who fail to make it into the big leagues.

Even so, more and more people are joining their ranks, lining up for auditions in Mumbai's northern suburbs where Bollywood's major studios are based.

 Thrill of acting

Casting director Girish Hule told AFP the number of actors vying for roles in the adverts he handles has more than doubled since 2014.

"I have even come across doctors and engineers who quit stable jobs because they wanted to act," he said.

"Years go by waiting for the big break. People go back home or take up other jobs in the industry, working as stylists or assistant directors or in casting.

"In some cases, people spend five years, appearing at around 500 auditions and never get an acting job."

The glitz and glamour notwithstanding, finding success in Bollywood comes with plenty of challenges -– from battling sexual harassment to spending months out of work.

"In the beginning, I was too scared to even tell my mom when someone misbehaved, because I thought my family would stop me from pursuing acting," Rathod said.

"I am so glad #MeToo happened here – before that, it was just going on and no-one was talking about it," she said, referring to sexual harassment in the industry.

For Tthukral, who is well-versed in the ups and downs of the business, the risks are secondary to the thrill of acting, which he compares to a drug.

"My parents don't understand how I live – they just want me to settle down and run their business.

"Part of me wants that too, it would be an easier life," said the 34-year-old, who moved back to his hometown of New Delhi this summer.

But then he added, "I will return when I have made some money."

"I will be somebody. I don't know when the break will come but it will come." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – You can expect Maine Mendoza to never hold back, especially when people close to her are on the line.

The actress on Monday, January 6, addressed Twitter users who were using the hashtag #NoToArjoTheUser – referring to her boyfriend, actor Arjo Atayde – on the microblogging platform the entire day.

"Wow, some "fans" made #NoToArjoTheUser trend today. Congrats! But I say #YesToArjo," said Maine, who boasts of more than 5 million followers on Twitter.

Throughout Monday, several Twitter users – most of whom considered themselves fans of the "AlDub" tandem – tweeted using the hashtag. It's not entirely clear was triggered the Twitter campaign, but it seems that a handful of Maine's fans continue to disapprove of her real-life partner.

In the Philippines, stars are often paired into "love teams" that often star beside each other in television series and movies. While some love teams end up as real-life couples, many more don't – with Maine and her on-screen partner Alden Richards among the exceptions.

A quick scour of the hashtag also show fans defending Arjo from his haters.

Maine first rose to fame for her "dubsmash" videos, where she lipsynced to popular songs and even comedy skits. She later joined Eat Bulaga on GMA 7, where she played the role of Yaya Dub in the show's "Juan for All, All for Juan." It was on the popular noontime show where the "AlDub" pairing first emerged. Maine and Alden have starred in several movies together but in 2019, signed up for projects that paired them with different stars.

Alden was paired with rival network ABS-CBN's Kathryn Bernardo in Hello, Love, Goodbye. The Cathy Garcia-Molina was a critical and commercial success. Maine, meanwhile, starred alongside another ABS-CBN talent, Carlo Aquino, for another ABS-CBN Films movie, Isa Pa, With Feelings. While Isa Pa, With Feelings did not make as much in the box office, it was critically acclaimed by both audiences and film critics.

Arjo is signed with ABS-CBN and starred alongside Carlo Aquino in the iWant original series Bagman. – Rappler.com

Harvey Weinstein hit with new sex crimes charges in LA

LOS ANGELES, USA – Harvey Weinstein was hit with new sex crimes charges in Los Angeles on Monday, January 6 just as his high-profile trial in a separate case opened in New York, kicking off proceedings key to the #MeToo movement.

The case in California stems from a two-year investigation into allegations from several women that the disgraced Hollywood mogul assaulted them in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.

Weinstein has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and his attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

According to the charge sheet, Weinstein allegedly went to a Los Angeles area hotel on February 18, 2013 and raped a woman after pushing his way into her room. The woman alleges she did not immediately disclose the assault as Weinstein threatened her life if she did so.

The next day, he allegedly assaulted a woman at a hotel suite in Beverly Hills after she unwittingly followed him into the bathroom.

Neither woman has been identified.

"We believe the evidence will show that the defendant used his power and influence to gain access to his victims and then commit violent crimes against them," Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey said in a statement.

"I want to commend the victims who have come forward and bravely recounted what happened to them," she added. "It is my hope that all victims of sexual violence find strength and healing as they move forward."

'Time's up'

Earlier Monday, Weinstein entered the New York state courthouse looking frail in a dark suit and using a walker, more than two years after a slew of allegations against him triggered a global reckoning over sexual assault in the workplace, leading to the downfall of dozens of powerful men.

Demonstrators anchored by actresses Rose McGowan and Rosanna Arquette, two of Weinstein's most prominent accusers, gathered outside the Manhattan court wielding signs with slogans like "Justice for survivors."

"Time's up on sexual harassment in all workplaces," Arquette said. "Time's up on empty apologies without consequences. And time's up on the pervasive culture of silence that has enabled abusers like Weinstein."

The first day in court was largely technical and lasted just over an hour, with Justice James Burke rejecting a defense request that the jury be sequestered.

Burke said pre-screening would begin Tuesday and proper jury selection could be delayed until January 14 with proceedings expected to last six to eight weeks.

Weinstein did not speak during the hearing or to reporters outside and is unlikely to testify.

Watershed moment?

The co-founder of Miramax Films faces life in prison if convicted of his crimes in New York and 28 years if convicted in Los Angeles.

He is also the subject of criminal investigations in several other countries, including Britain, France and Italy.

Almost 90 women, including Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow, have accused the 67-year-old of sexual misconduct since The New York Times detailed claims against him in October 2017.

But Weinstein is being tried in New York on charges related to just two women, highlighting the difficulty of building cases around years-old incidents.

Former production assistant Mimi Haleyi alleges that the Pulp Fiction producer forcibly performed oral sex on her in his New York apartment in July 2006.

The second alleged victim is anonymous. She says Weinstein raped her in a New York hotel room in March 2013.

The Sopranos actress Annabella Sciorra will also give evidence as the prosecution seeks to convince the jury of a pattern of predatory sexual behavior.

A Weinstein conviction would signal a watershed moment.

Almost all the men targeted in the deluge of #MeToo allegations, be it in entertainment or business, have escaped prosecution.

The only other trial on the horizon is that of R&B singer R. Kelly, charged last year with several assaults on young women, but allegations of sexual impropriety have dogged him for years.

American comedian Bill Cosby was sentenced to at least three years in prison in September 2018, but those proceedings started two years before the Weinstein allegations.

'Strength and courage'

On Monday, Sarah Ann Masse, an actress who says Weinstein sexually assaulted her when she interviewed for a job as a nanny in 2008, voiced support for those testifying, sending them "so much strength and courage."

"The man has spent 30-plus years assaulting over 100 women -- it's incredibly clear what happened," she told AFP.

Weinstein has always maintained his sexual relationships were consensual and his defense team has sought to undermine the allegations of the two New York accusers.

They have produced emails and text messages which they say show Weinstein and his alleged victims remained in friendly contact for months after the alleged events.

In a weekend interview with CNN, Weinstein suggested he may be able to rebuild his career if acquitted.

"If I can get back to doing something good and building places that help heal and comfort others, I intend to do so," he wrote.

Masse voiced hope for a far different outcome: "I am hoping he goes to jail for the rest of his life." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Comedian Joey de Leon trended on Twitter on Tuesday, January 7, after cracking a lewd joke during a segment on noontime show Eat Bulaga.

During the show's "Bawal Judgmental" segment, Joey and co-host Allan K were interviewing a Miss Millennial 2018 candidate who returned to the show as a judge in the segment. Danna Rose Socaoco, who was first runner-up in Miss Millennial 2018, now works as a flight attendant.

Joey complimented her legs on air and later said, "Sana masakyan kita isang araw (I hope to ride you one day),"

The double entendre was definitely not okay with people online.

One user, @iamchristevans, tweeted: "I love Eat Bulaga but Joey de Leon [is] always proving that he is an insensitive host. Saying, 'Sana masakyan kita' to a flight attendant contestant in #BawalJudgmental is so below the belt and shows no respect to the audience and also to the contestant."

Twitter user @MarkyFul wrote: "I hope Joey De Leon is constantly reminded that everytime he says something shitty on national tv, a ghost from his past would always make its presence felt in the digital world."

Several also pointed the hypocrisy of some critics – in calling Joey de Leon out while tolerating the same sort of statements from politicians.

As of writing, the TV host has not yet issued a statement.

This is not the first time Joey's earned the ire of social media users.  In 2018, Joey was criticized after asking a former guest relations officer (GRO) if she's had anyone from Eat Bulaga as a customer. In the Philippines, the term "GRO" is used to refer to women who keep men company in bars. (READ: The many times Joey de Leon found himself in the middle of controversy)

MANILA, Philippines – From "bullied husband," Nico Bolzico now has a new role: "El Padre."

The social media star and husband to actress Solenn Heussaff became a father on January 1 when his beloved "wifezilla" gave birth to their daughter, Thylane Katana.

Since then, the couple have kept things low-key on social media – which is understandable considering they're caring for a newborn – but Nico did manage to sneak in a post with his baby girl.

Sharing a photo of him cradling Thylane, Nico said: "We thought we knew what unconditional love was until you came to our lives!"

He also said that the baby was accepted by their dog Pochola, but ignored by their cat Negroni. He joked that the next challenge will be introducing her to their beloved turtle and first pet Patato, who Nico describes as "very territorial."

Nico added that he is in charge of burping, and said "She calls me #ElPadre, imagine when a boy tries to court her and she tells him: 'You ll need to talk to #ElPadre first'...They won't even try!"

'1917' advances on Oscars contention after big Globes wins

OSCAR BUZZ. '1917,' directed by Sam Mendes is receiving a lot of buzz as the announcement of nominations for the Oscars approach. Screenshot from YouTube/Universal Pictures

LOS ANGELES, USA – Sam Mendes's 1917, an innovative and deeply personal portrayal of World War I, has exploded into Oscar contention following its dramatic wins at the Golden Globes.

The movie – inspired by tales Mendes's military veteran grandfather told him as a child – follows two British soldiers on a perilous mission across no man's land.

They must risk near-certain death to deliver a vital message ordering a calamitous planned attack on German lines be aborted.

The film won best drama, the Globes' most prestigious prize, on Sunday, January 5 as well as best director for Mendes – fending off frontrunners such as Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) and Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.)

"It's the biggest team effort ever," co-lead actor George MacKay told AFP moments after the top prize was announced, adding that he was "thrilled, proper thrilled."

In a radical filmmaking experiment, Mendes and cinematographer Roger Deakins shot footage that glides from trenches to crater-filled battlefields and through a devastated French town, in what appears to be almost one continuous shot stretching for two hours.

"They've never made a film in one continuous take. None of us have," Dean-Charles Chapman, the film's other leading actor, told AFP at a Beverly Hills event hosted by BAFTA, Britain's version of the motion picture Academy.

Chapman and MacKay described how they rehearsed the scenes for 6 months, "reading the scenes in an open field" as they paced out their movements and dialogue until they became muscle memory.

Meanwhile, an intricately detailed set of exactly the right scale was constructed around them.

"We're walking along stabbing stakes along the floor to mark out – there's the wall, there's the start, there's the finish," recalled Chapman.

"Slowly the set would become a trench, and then we'd adjust the size of the set around the scene. And we'd do that with every single scene – it took 6 months to do."

Keep viewers guessing

The bold approach clearly paid off as victory at the Globes, which open Hollywood's award season, has seen odds for 1917 at next month's all-important Oscars slashed.

It is expected to compete for best picture, best director and multiple technical categories – although its relatively unknown stars are not in the awards conversation.

Mendes said he deliberately cast actors who were not "big movie stars" to help audiences empathize with them – and keep viewers guessing about whether they would survive.

"Maybe both of them will be killed – I don't know. Whereas if it's Leonardo DiCaprio, then perhaps you know he's going to survive," Mendes told AFP in Paris last month.

Chapman is best known for playing child king Tommen Baratheon in Game of Thrones, while MacKay had a supporting role in 2016 comedy Captain Fantastic.

While 1917 does feature British stars including Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Scott, they are confined to smaller roles.

'Most personal movie'

The basis for the plot was a particular story Mendes' grandfather Alfred told him about serving as a messenger on the Western Front.

This was supplemented with other real accounts of the war taken from letters, diaries and other research.

"I suppose it is my most personal because it comes directly from me, although I feel that I never made a movie that wasn't personal at some level," said Mendes.

The film turned out to have personal connections for its actors too.

Chapman told AFP how his research for the role of Lance Corporal Blake led him to uncovering his own great-great-grandfather's journal entry in a book called The Western Front Diaries.

The actors also visited France and Belgium to see the actual war sites. The film was shot in England.

The collaborative nature of shooting 1917 mirrored the subject matter, as the actors learnt about the appalling experiences their ancestors had endured together in the trenches, they explained.

"There was lots of themes emotionally and literally, about the story and what the characters go through, that were entwined in the making of the film," said MacKay.

"It's a wonderful thing where the specialness of that experience aligns with it being received so positively," he added. – Rappler.com

SUICIDE NOT A JOKE. Jobert Sucaldito hits Nadine Lustre for her remarks against Ricky Lo, as fans call him out for his suicide remark. Photo from Facebook/Sucaldito Jobert/ABS CBN PR

MANILA, Philippines – Celebrities and mental health advocates on Wednesday, January 8, criticized radio host and entertainment writer Jobert Sucaldito for "joking" about suicide in criticizing actress Nadine Lustre over her reaction to a Ricky Lo column.

During the January 7 episode of his entertainment show Showbuzz on DZMM, Sucaldito said the actress and Your Moment judge's reaction to Philippine Star entertainment editor Ricky Lo's column was disrespectful. (READ: ‘Anu na, 2020 na’: Nadine Lustre slams Ricky Lo over column)

"You are wrong here. Unang-una, gusto namin ipaalala sa inyo lahat na mga fans ng JaDine, hindi kami ang may pakulo ng lahat ng ito. Wala kaming alam sa mga buhay ng mga idol 'nyo. Sila ang gawa-gawa ng kuwento na ang mali namin pinatulan namin kaya medyo lumaki at pinag-uusapan," he said, referring to Nadine and her fans.

(You are wrong here. First of all, we want to remind you JaDine fans that this is not our idea. We don't know what's happening in your idols' lives. They are the ones making stories and our mistake is that we wrote about it and it became big and people talked about it.)

"'Di ba iyon naman ang gusto nila? Kuno-kuno na may mga labas ng puwet, naka T-back pa doon sa building, tapos may mga nakalagay na caption na parang gustong tumalon sa building. Sana tumalon na lang kung ganun din naman pala (Isn't that what they want? They show off their butts, wear T-backs, and put a caption about wanting to jump from a building. She should have jumped if that's the case)."

#SuicideIsNotAJokeJobert trended on Twitter, as fans and mental health advocates called out the entertainment writer for his irresponsible statements.

Nadine had earlier clapped back at Ricky Lo after he insisted, in a column for the Star, that a Pep report claiming that Nadine and onscreen and real-life partner James Reid had broken up. Lo had also dragged Nadine's mental health problems into the discussion, for some reason. Nadine denied all of the claims in Lo's column and criticized him for "using someone’s mental situation/tragic past just to prove a point."

The Pep report claimed the two spent Christmas and New Year's apart – but sleuthing fans easily dug up photos to prove that the two had actually spent the holidays with each other and their respective families.

Still, Sucaldito insisted that Lo did not deserve Nadine's sarcasm because he has "lived almost all his life in this business, and he has gained that reputation, that respect, dignity as a journalist." Sucaldito said Nadine should apologize to Ricky for the remark. He then posted a long message for Nadine on his Facebook account, where he said that while he adored Nadine, she had a lot to learn.

Advocates, stars react

While Sucaldito was busy trying to scold Nadine, several personalities in the entertainment industry criticized him for his flippant remarks about suicide.

Liway director Kip Oebanda reminded both Jobert and the public that laws exist to protect people from discrimination based on their mental health issues.

Bianca Gonzalez-Intal also tweeted about the incident.

Kiana Valenciano expressed shock over the radio host's "ignorance."

"WAKE UP AND GROW UP. Suicide is not a joking matter or something to bring up passively for clout. I am stunned. How can someone be so ignorant and insensitive about this issue in this day and age?"

Mental health advocate Gia Sison reminded the public to use their platforms wisely when it comes to the issue of mental health.

Fans told Jobert to leave Nadine alone and pointed out that they didn't start the issue.

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Ging Reyes issued a statement, saying they will look into the matter.

DISBANDMENT. Korean group X1 is no more, after its entertainment agencies decided to officially disband the boys. Photo from X1's Instagram account

MANILA, Philippines – South Korean boy band X1 has officially disbanded, months after allegations that their win on Korean reality show Produce X 101 was rigged.

The 9 talent agencies handling the 11 members of X1 released a joint statement on Monday, January 7. The agencies that handle the group include Play M Entertainment, Yuehua Entertainment, TOP Media, OUI Entertainment, MBK Entertainment, Woollim Entertainment, DSP Media, Starship Entertainment, and Brand New Music.

"The X1 members and each of the agencies negotiated under the condition of unanimous agreement, but we could not come to an agreement, so we have decided on their disbandment," the management groups said, according to Korean news site Soompi

CJ ENM, the entertainment agency of X1, said in a separate statement  that it "respects the decision of the agencies" to disband X1, even though "CJ ENM worked for X1 to resume activites."

The decision comes months after X1 debuted in August 2019 as winners of Mnet’s Idol survival reality show program, Produce X 101.

In November, police revealed that the show's producers rigged the audience votes, after the winning line-up was revealed even before the final episode aired.

The investigation also found that producers accepted bribes from different entertainment agency representatives to "favor" certain contest participants. The producers, Ahn Joon Young and Kim Yong Bum, were arrested, after Joon Young admitted that the results of Produce X 101's 4 seasons were rigged.

X1 ceased promotions the same month.

According to an Allkpop report, CJ ENM publicly apologized for the vote-rigging in December, stating that they would give up all the profits earned by the groups.

X1 was comprised of Kim Yo-han, Kim Woo-seok, Han Seung-woo, Song Hyeong-jun, Choo Seung-youn, Son Dong-pyo, Lee Han-gyul, Nam Do-hyon, Cha Jun-ho, Kang Min-hee, and Lee Eun-sang.

LOS ANGELES, USA – Ugly Betty creator Silvio Horta has been found dead in Miami, the show's actresses said Tuesday, January 7.

Horta's agent said a statement from the family was expected shortly. Although no cause of death was given, a report in Variety said Horta, 45, had died by suicide.

Horta developed the hit ABC show Ugly Betty based on a Colombian telenovella.

The series charted the progress of a geeky secretary attempting to forge a career at a New York fashion magazine.

Both the show – executive produced by Salma Hayek – and its breakout star America Ferrera won Golden Globes.

"I'm stunned and heartbroken to hear the devastating news of Ugly Betty creator, Silvio Horta's death," Ferrera wrote on Instagram Tuesday.

"His talent and creativity brought me and so many others such joy & light."

Ugly Betty co-star Vanessa Williams added: "Still in shock after hearing the tragic news... His creativity and passion will be missed by so many of us that worked with him. May he Rest In Peace."

The show ran for four seasons from 2006, with Horta serving as showrunner and head writer.

Cuban-American Horta moved to Los Angeles in 1996, and sold his screenplay for slasher movie Urban Legend which became a hit film starring Jared Leto two years later.

Horta struggled to build on the success of Ugly Betty, with no major projects aired since his breakout hit ended in 2010. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Following backlash on social media, radio host and entertainment writer Jobert Sucaldito apologized on Wednesday, January 8, for his remarks against and about Nadine Lustre.

In a statement broadcast over DZMM, Sucaldito said: “I would like to apologize to Ms. Nadine Lustre and to those who got bothered by that sa aspetong ito. I am also apologizing to my radio network DZMM for putting them in discomfort because of this.”

The radio host and entertainment writer earlier criticized the actress on his DZMM program for her reaction to Philippine Star entertainment editor Ricky Lo's column about her supopsed breakup with longtime boyfriend James Reid. Sucaldito also picked on Nadine's social media posts and captions and said that she "should have just jumped from a building," referring to one of her social media posts.

Nadine criticized Lo after he insisted, in a column for the Star, that a Pep report claiming that Nadine and onscreen and real-life partner James Reid had broken up. Lo had also dragged Nadine's mental health problems into the discussion, for some reason. Nadine denied all of the claims in Lo's column and criticized him for "using someone’s mental situation/tragic past just to prove a point." (READ: ‘Anu na, 2020 na’: Nadine Lustre slams Ricky Lo over column)

MANILA, Philippines – Actress and comedian Ai-Ai delas Alas dropped by the Quirino Grandstand early Thursday, January 9, after the midnight mass for the feast of the Black Nazarene. She performed and shared with the audience the blessings she received.

"Sinasabi natin sa buhay natin di ba, pag tayo may problema, pag tayo may mga hinihiling, parati natin sinasabi sa buhay natin always trust the Lord with all your heart (When we face problems, when we ask for something, we always tell ourselves trust the Lord with All your heart)," Ai-Ai said.

"Dati sinasabi ko lang I trust the Lord, I trust the Lord, pero sa totoo lang po minsan parang Lord, ibibigay mo ba talaga sa akin iyon? ( Before, I'd always say: I trust the Lord, I trust the Lord. But in reality, I ask God will you give it to me?)"

Ai-Ai recalled how she  was tested when she was about to be launched in the movie Ang Tanging Ina, which became one of the biggest movies of her career. She said that at that time, all she wanted was for people to watch the movie, having been in showbiz for many years.

"Parati po akong pumupunta sa Baclaran, palagi po ako nananalangin sa Panginoon natin na Lord, ito po yung panalangin ko na Lord. Sana po sa opening ng pelikula, pag  nag-opening sa sinehan 'Ang Tanging Ina,' huwag po sanang umulan (I would always go to Baclaran. I would always pray to God saying that when Ang Tanging Ina is shown in cinemas, i hope that it will not rain)," she said.

But when the movie opened, it rained and there was a typhoon. This led her to question God and herself at that time. But to her surprise, she started receiving congratulatory messages, saying the movie was doing well.

"Nung araw na iyon na napakalakas ng bagyo, lahat po ng mga tao noon pumasok. Hindi agad sinabi na walang pasok sa lahat ng eskwelahan, sa lahat ng mga empleyado, hindi po agad sinabi nung araw na iyon. So lahat ng taong umuwi, imbes na umuwi pumunta po sa sinehan. (That day, when the there was a typhoon. But people were not aware and still went to school, to work. They were not informed that classes and work were suspended. So instead of going home, they went to the movies.)

"Kaya po iyon ang nangyari, 'Ang Tanging Ina' ay isa sa malakas na pelikula of all time nung 2003. Kaya naniniwala po ako na trust in the Lord with all your heart at lahat po iyan, ay kung ano po ang hinihiling natin sa puso natin, ay ibibigay po ng Panginoon Diyos sa atin sa kanyang oras. (So that's what happened. Ang Tanging Ina is one of the topgrosser films of all time in 2003. That's why I believe in trust in the Lord with all your heart and all of that, whatever you ask for in our hearts, God will give it at the right time)," Ai-Ai said.

Ai-Ai is set to star in the movie D'Ninang, directed by GB Sampedro which opens on January 22. – Rappler.com

DIAGNOSED. Justin Bieber revealed on Instagram that he has been struggling with Lyme disease. Photo from Justin Bieber's Instagram account

MONTREAL, Canada – Pop super star Justin Bieber announced Wednesday that he has Lyme disease.

In a post on Instagram, Bieber said he will address his struggle with the illness, which is contracted through a tick bite, in a YouTube documentary.

"It's been a rough couple years but getting the right treatment that will help treat this so far incurable disease and I will be back and better than ever," the 25-year-old entertainer wrote in the post's caption.

He called out critics who he says have been unfairly commenting on his looks by saying he looks like he is "on meth."

"They failed to realize I've been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease, not only that but had a serious case of chronic mono which affected my, skin, brain function, energy, and overall health."

The photo portion of Bieber's post shows a TMZ article reporting that the YouTube documentary is set for a January 27 release.

"You can learn all that I've been battling and OVERCOMING!!" he wrote on Instagram.

He spent much of last year suffering but undiagnosed, TMZ reported, until doctors figured out what was wrong.

The post's photos include pictures said to be taken in September of Bieber appearing to be hooked up to an IV drip.

In subsequent Instagram posts and on his Instagram story later in the day, Bieber thanked his fans for supporting his new song "Yummy," released last week.

And the Canadian seemed to say he is doing better, posting a meme video of a little girl dancing with the caption, "But now this is how I'm feelin."

Bieber was discovered by talent scouts as a young teenager after posting videos of himself singing on YouTube and quickly shot to superstardom. He has since won several MTV awards, Billboard Music awards and a Grammy, among others.

After an Instagram post from March indicated Bieber would be taking time off music to focus on "my family and my health," Bieber married US model Hailey Baldwin in September.

Now he has a new album and tour coming soon, according to TMZ.

In September Bieber opened up about "massive ups and downs" he experienced as he went from beloved teenage heartthrob to "the most ridiculed, judged and hated person in the world."

In a lengthy Instagram post, he reflected on how child stardom triggered depression and a lack of humility that led to drug abuse and his becoming "resentful, disrespectful to women, and angry."

"I became distant to everyone who loved me, and I was hiding behind, a shell of a person that i had become," he wrote.

Lyme disease is transmitted to humans through infected ticks, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms can include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, joint aches and a "bull's-eye" rash that occurs in 70 to 80% of infections.

Most people who are treated with antibiotics early fully recover, according to the CDC, though the infection can become severe or prolonged in some cases. – Rappler.com

REPEAT. The Oscars will be host-less again in 2020, following last year's format, which helped boost ratings. Photo from The Academy's Instagram account

LOS ANGELES, USA – The Oscars will again go without a host next month, repeating a format credited with boosting ratings last year, US network ABC confirmed Wednesday.

"Together with the Academy, we have decided there will be no traditional host, repeating for us what worked last year," ABC entertainment president Karey Burke told a television summit near Los Angeles, according to showbiz website Deadline Hollywood.

"[It will have] huge entertainment values, big musical numbers, comedy and star power."

An ABC spokeswoman confirmed the report to AFP.

Last year, the Oscars decided to go without a host – the first time in 3 decades – after their original choice Kevin Hart pulled out  when old homophobic tweets of his resurfaced.

In the end the event was considered a success and the show enjoyed a year-on-year increase in ratings.

The host-less format has not always been so well received, however.

The previous time the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tried it, one of the most infamous moments in Oscars history was born: an awkward song-and-dance number featuring actor Rob Lowe and... Snow White.

The Oscars are handed out on February 9. – Rappler.com
