LOS ANGELES, USA – The Playboy Mansion, reputedly host to some of America's most raucous parties and other shenanigans too graphic for print, is up for sale for $200 million, US media said Saturday, January 9.

Home of Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner, 89, the notorious building will be listed within the next month, celebrity website TMZ reported.

Playboy Enterprises is seeking upwards of $200 million, but TMZ, citing real-estate sources in the area of Holmby Hills – close to Beverly Hills – said the mansion is more likely to go for between $80 million and $90 million.

Prospective buyers can tour the sprawling property, but one area is off-limits – Hefner's bedroom, TMZ said.

It also said that any sale comes with a major catch – whoever buys it must give Hefner a life estate, meaning he can continue to live in the mansion until he dies.

Forbes magazine describes the mansion as "Gothic/Tudor" and says its amenities include 3 zoo and aviary buildings, a pet cemetery, a tennis court, waterfall, pool and basketball court.

Numerous visitors to the house have described it as being in a state of disrepair.

Playboy Enterprises did not immediately comment when contacted by Agence France Presse. – Rappler.com

LASTING LEGACY. Former First Lady Imelda Marcos says German 'Kuya Germs' Moreno will be missed for his contributions to the entertainment industry. Screengrab from Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Former First Lady and Ilocos Norte 2nd District Representative Imelda Marcos paid tribute to the late German "Kuya Germs" Moreno, saying he was a great loss for the entertainment industry.

In her speech during the second night of Kuya Germs' wake at the Mt Carmel Church in New Manila, the former first lady recalled how her relationship with Kuya Germs developed.

Imelda said: "This is a truly sad day for all of us because somehow he made our days in life happier, more beautiful and more pleasant. I remember when I was on trial in the United States, and I heard that his mother just passed away, I called him and said ‘Germs, now that your mother is gone, just remember I volunteer as your substitute mother. From then on, just treat me as your mother.' And true enough, he treated me like a mother and what a wonderful relation[ship] that we had. And every time I felt down, all I had to do was open the television, watch him, and see how he developed the young to make a better and more beautiful world for the Filipino people."

Imelda described Kuya Germs as a man who "made lives of people more meaningful, more beautiful and also improved and made our culture so varied and so beautiful." She also said that she admired him for what he has done for the industry and that his legacy will live on.

"My heart is full of admiration for this man. Last Sunday, I watched him. I don’t know why I stayed way beyond his program. Perhaps I had an inkling that he might go because I heard he had an attack a few days back. But Kuya Germs, you may be physically not present with us anymore, but your spirit will be with us forever. And your legacy of the thousands and thousands of the young people you have developed and made assets for the country to show to the world what a beautiful culture and what a beautiful people the Filipinos are. For this we thank you.

"From the bottom of our hearts, Kuya Germs, we love you, we admire you and you ca be sure, you will always be in our hearts, and we will always remember you with much much love," she said.

Following her speech, Imelda said that Kuya Germs for her was an "invaluable friend."

"It’s a great loss. We will never forget him because his legacy will be with us forever," Imelda said.

Kuya Germs died on Friday, January 8, due to cardiac arrest. In January 2015, he suffered a stroke and took time off from his job as a TV host and radio announcer. He then went back to his job 3 months after taking a rest.

Prior to his death, Kuya Germs hosted Walang Tulugan With The Master Showman, and was the person behind shows such as GMA Supershow and That's Entertainment, which became the vehicle for many stars to be recognized. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Grace Poe said that she will always remember the late German "Kuya Germs" Moreno for his optimistic and positive outlook in life.

In an interview during the second day of Kuya Germs' wake at the Mt Carmel Church in New Manila on Saturday, January 9, Grace said Kuya Germs has always been a helpful person.

"Si Kuya Germs talaga, iyan yung matulungin. Haligi iyan ng ating industriya kasi, iyon nga, binibigay niyang pagkakataon yung sa mga bata, and very optimistic, very positive. Wala siyang masamang sinasabi sa kanyang kapwa," she said.

(Kuya Germs is a very helpful person. He’s a pillar of our industry because he gave everyone a chance, the kids, and he’s very optimistic, very positive. He never said anything hurtful to anyone.)

The senator said that Kuya Germs' actions remind her so much of her father, the late showbiz icon Fernando Poe Jr, who was also known to have helped the Philippine entertainment industry in his own ways.

"Kaya para sa akin, 'pag nakikita ko si Kuya Germs palaging nangangamusta, naaalala ko rin yung tatay ko. Kahit papaano ang iniisip niya hindi sarili niya palagi."

(For me, whenever Kuya Germs asked how I was, I would always remember my father. He never thinks about himself, but always about others.)

Grace added that she cannot thank Kuya Germs enough for what he has contributed to the industry. She also asked for a small favor.

"At kung magkikita kayo ni Papa, paki-akap na lang siya para sa akin (And if you see Papa, please hug him for me)." – Rappler.com

Star Cinema, Ai-Ai delas Alas fight over MMFF 2015 No 1 claim

NUMBER ONE. Star Cinema reps lash back at Ai-Ai delas Alas after she says that their claim that their movie earned the most in the MMFF 2015 is a lie. Photo courtesy of Star Cinema, Screengrab from YouTube

MANILA, Philippines – The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) may be over, but the fight to be number one continues.

While the MMFF committee did not disclose specific figures for the highest grossing movies for the 2015 festival, Star Cinema claimed that their entry, Beauty and the Bestie, came out on top.

But My Bebe Love actress Ai-Ai delas Alas doubts the claim.

On January 7, the last day of the festival, Star Cinema advertising and promotions director Roxie Liquigan said that Beauty and the Bestie was the number one MMFF movie in terms of sales.

On January 3, the movie's star, comedian Vice Ganda also tweeted that the movie was number one in the festival's second week.

{source}

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">300Million THANKS to you Madlang People for making us number 1 in your hearts. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/BeautyAndTheBestieSecondWeek?src=hash">#BeautyAndTheBestieSecondWeek</a></p>&mdash; jose marie viceral (@vicegandako) <a href="https://twitter.com/vicegandako/status/683150464070750208">January 2, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}

But at a press conference in California on January 8, Ai-ai was reported to have said that she doubted Star Cinema's claim: “Kahit yung number 3, pwede din sabihin na number one din sila eh (Even the number 3 movie can say that they're number one),” she said, according to reports

"Ayaw ni Lord ang nangdadaya (The Lord doesn't like cheaters). Karma is a b-tch," she added.

Ai-Ai brought up the ticket swapping issue, wherein ticket counters incorrectly printed Beauty and the Bestie instead of My Bebe Love. The issue was confirmed by My Bebe Love director Joey Reyes, but denied by the MMFF in a statement on Facebook.

“Kahit ano pa ang sabihin nila, ilalaban ko ng patayan, itataga ko sa bato, kami po ang number one (No matter what they say, I will fight it to the death, I will carve it in stone, we are number one),” said Ai-Ai at the press conference.

In a series of tweets on January 9, Star Cinema's Liquigan called out Ai-Ai on her statements, noting that Ai-Ai didn't say how much My Bebe Love has earned and daring her to show proof.

Fierce rivals

Star Cinema is a subsidiary of ABS-CBN. My Bebe Love was produced by Antonio P Tuviera Entertainment, a subsidiary of Television And Production Exponents Philippines, Inc., under GMA network. The two networks are the biggest in the Philippines and are fierce rivals.

"Sana sa totoo na lang tayo. Ang dali-dali kasi magsalita sa presscon, para saan, para mag ingay? Pinaghirapan namin ang mga entries sa MMFF. Tapos mag-iingay na dinaya?

(I wish we'd stick to the truth. It's so easy to speak during a presscon, for what, to make noise? We worked hard on the MMFF entries. And you're going to make noise saying that we cheated?)

"Magkaibigan kami ni Ai-Ai pero foul ang ginawa niya. Di niya naisip na marami siyang taong masasaktan sa mga sinabi niya na HINDI NAMAN TOTOO."

(Ai-Ai and I are friends, but what she did was foul. She didn't think that she would hurt a lot of people with the lies that she said.)

Del Rosario pointed out that although the company joins the festival every year, it's only now that people started saying bad things about it.

"Tigilan ang pagbibintang sa Star Cinema. Taun-taon kasali kami sa MMFF ngayon daming binabato sa kumpanya. Ano nga bang nag iba this year? Sa Star ba may nag-iba?

(Stop blaming Star Cinema. Every year, we are part of the MMFF, but it's only now that there's so much being thrown at the company. What changed this year? Did something change with Star?)

"STAR CINEMA'S VALUES ARE INTACT. Honesty and integrity are on top of the list. And lahat ng nasa kumpanya, at lahat ng galing sa kumpanya, alam yan (And everyone in the company, everyone who came from the company, knows this)."

MANILA, Philippines – It looks like Steve Harvey's Miss Universe gaffe won't be forgotten soon. The accident was spoofed once again, during the 73rd Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 10 (Monday, January 11 in Manila).

Jamie Foxx was presenting the award for Best Original Score with actress Lily James.

"Straight Outta Compton," Jamie announced, with a completely straight face, even though the show wasn't nominated.

After a few seconds, Jamie then copied Steve Harvey's apology, saying "I'm sorry folks, I made a mistake."

He even showed the card with the winner's name – Ennio Morricone for The Hateful Eight. "It's right here on the card, I take full reponsibility... I apologize to everybody in Compton."

During Miss Universe 2015 in December, host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez was the winner, before going back up on stage and apologizing. The Philippines' bet, Pia Wurtzbach, won.

What do you think of Jamie Foxx's spoof? Let us know in the comments!  Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Denzel Washington was this year's recipient of the prestigious Cecil B DeMille Award at the 2016 Golden Globes.

Denzel, known for movies such as Malcolm X, The Pelican Brief, Glory, and Training Day, expressed gratitude to his family and managers for their support. He also thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for supporting him.

"They've always made me feel like a friend or part of the party," he said.

In between Denzel's speech, he bantered with his wife and family members who were with him onstage.

The award was presented by Tom Hanks, who starred with Denzel in the movie Philadelphia.

The HFPA gives the Cecil B DeMille Award to those with "outstanding contribution in the world of entertainment." Last year, George Clooney took home the recognition.

Denzel is the third African-American actor to receive the award. Sidney Poitier was the first in 1982, followed by Morgan Freeman in 2012. – Rappler.com

In Titanic, Leo and Kate play Jack and Rose, who meet on the ship and fall in love. The movie, directed by James Cameron, went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1998.

After the success of Titanic, Leo and Kate were able to work again in 2009's Revolutionary Road, directed by Kate's ex-husband Sam Mendes. They were nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively in the 2009 Golden Globes.

Although it's been quite some time since they've worked together, the two have been in touch, with Leo even walking Kate down the aisle when she married husband Ned RocknRoll in 2012.

In an interview on Entertainment Tonight, Leo praised Kate, saying he would love to work with her again.

"She's my favorite actress in the industry," Leo said.

In return, Kate said before the awards ceremony that she was hoping her long-time friend would receive a recognition at the Golden Globes.

"I'm very excited for him. It could be him," Kate told Entertainment Tonight"He's very cool. He's a pro. We've been through a lot together – we've grown up."

MANILA, Philippines (4th UPDATE) – The legendary British musician David Bowie has died on Sunday, January 10 (Monday, January 11 in Manila), bringing the curtain down on one of the most acclaimed artists of modern British music. He was 69.

Bowie died after an 18-month battle with cancer, according to a statement posted on his official Facebook and Twitter accounts.

"While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief," the statement said.

Bowie is best known for his groundbreaking work in music, working on a diverse range of styles ranging from glam rock, New Romantic, Krautrock and dance music to alternative rock, jungle, soul and hard rock, underpinned by an astonishing array of stage personas from the sexually ambiguous Ziggy Stardust to the so-called Thin White Duke.

From Space Oddity to Blackstar

He started his legendary career in 1967, and his first hit song Space Oddity was released in 1969 – a song about an astronaut called Major Tom who is abandoned in space.

The 1970s – the decade that saw him dominate the British music scene and conquer the United States – brought forward a string of successful albums, starting with the critically-acclaimed Hunky Dory.

In 1972, Bowie – and his alter ego Ziggy Stardust – was catapulted to stardom with the release of his album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The album spawned hits such as Starman and Suffragette City.

This was followed by the rock album Aladdin Sane, the apocalyptic Diamond Dogs and a fling with so-called plastic soul, Station to Station.

He then switched gears once more, moving to Berlin to work with the electronic experimentalist Brian Eno product a trio of albums – Low, Heroes, and Lodger.

The 1980s saw him win over a new generation with Let's Dance, which yielded the hit singles China Girl and Modern Love, and a 1985 teamup with Mick Jagger for a cover of Dancin' in the Street that helped to push the BandAid and LiveAid charity projects.

His chameleon-like ability to reinvent his image, drawing on everything from mime to kabuki theatre, was accompanied by a string of albums until heart problems curtailed his productivity in the 2000s.

But he surprised the world by launching a surprise single Where are We Now? on his 66th birthday in 2013 after a decade of silence, recalling his days in Berlin in the 1970s and hailed by critics as a major comeback.

The singer has just released his 28th album, Blackstar, on Friday, January 8 – which was also his 69th birthday.

Throughout his career he appeared in films in acting and cameo roles, from his striking appearance in the cult 1986 film Labyrinth to playing inventor Nikola Tesla in The Prestige in 2006.

An innovator to the end, Bowie moved away from pop into a new jazz sound in his final album. A dark work marked by tense instrumentation, a sense of dread and lyrics about mortality, the work is cast in a new light by the revelation of how ill he was when he created it.

He was born David Robert Jones in Brixton, inner south London, on January 8 ,1947. At the beginning of his career in 1966, he named himself David Bowie to avoid confusion with Davy Jones, lead singer with Beatles rivals The Monkees, and studied Buddhism and mime.

He leaves behind his wife, supermodel Iman, and two children: Duncan Jones, his son with his first wife Angie Bowie, and Alexandria Zahra Jones, his daughter with Iman. – With reports from Agence France-Presse and KD Suarez/Rappler.com

On Sunday, January 10 (Monday, January 11 in Manila), David succumbed to cancer at the age of 69. His death was announced on his social media accounts. His son Duncan also confirmed the news.

"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief," the statement read.

Known as one of Britain's iconic artists, David rose to fame with songs such as "Fame, "Let's Dance," "Space Oddity," and more. Last January 8, his 69th birthday and just a couple of days before his death, David released the album Blackstar.

WATCH: 5 David Bowie covers from movie soundtracks, rock bands

MANILA, Philippines – The late David Bowie was a prolific songwriter, with a career spanning 4 decades. His Wikipedia discography lists 27 studio albums, 9 live albums, 46 compilation albums, 5 extended plays (EPs), and 111 singles.

Here are 5 covers by popular bands of some of his biggest hits.

"Heroes" – The Wallflowers

Bowie's 1977 hit was remade a little over 20 years later by The Wallflowers, fronted by Jakob Dylan – the son of folk rock icon Bob Dylan. The cover is part of the soundtrack of the 1998 blockbuster hit Godzilla, gaining massive airtime on MTV and heavy radio play.

"Diamond Dogs" – Beck

Released in 1974, "Diamond Dogs" is the titular single of Bowie's 8th studio album. Covered by Britrock icon Beck and produced by hiphop mogul Timbaland in 2001, the remake became part of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.

"The Man Who Sold The World" – Nirvana

Yet another titular track for a Bowie album, "The Man Who Sold The World" was released in 1970. Some time later, in 1994, grunge rock band Nirvana did a stripped-down cover of the song in one of MTV's Unplugged sessions.

"Sound and Vision" – Franz Ferdinand

Scottish band Franz Ferdinand's compilation of covers includes a Bowie song – "Sound and Oddities" from the 1977 album Low. Franz Ferdinand vocalist Alex Kapranos confessed to beig a Bowie fan, a gesture which the latter reciprocated.

"Space Oddity" – Smashing Pumpkins

While the Smashing Pumpkins's cover of "Space Oddity" is not part of any of their albums, the band enjoys playing the 1969 hit in their live performances. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – An official of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) owns a company that promoted two movies that participated – and won – in the festival, a House investigation on Monday, January 11, showed.

At a House of Representatives hearing on Monday, a conflict of interest issue was raised against Dominic Du, a member of the MMFF Executive Committee, in relation to his company and the committee's decision to disqualify Honor Thy Father from the festival's 2015 Best Picture category.

At the hearing held to discuss alleged irregularities in the 2015 MMFF, Laguna Representative Dan Fernandez asked Du  about his business. (READ: MMFF 2015 clarifies 'Honor Thy Father' disqualification)

Du, who has been an ExeCom member for 8 years, admitted owning Axinite Digicinema Inc, a distributor of foreign films. His income, he said, depends on the gross earnings of the films he releases.

The lawmaker disclosed that Axinite promoted two of the 2015 MMFF films on its Facebook page: Walang Forever and Buy Now Die Later.

Walang Forever won Best Picture, and Buy Now Die Later won Second Best Picture – the category that MMFF entry Honor Thy Father was disqualified just a day before the awards night.

The two films were also produced by Quantum Films' Joji Alonso, who happens to be a legal counsel of Du, according to Representative Fernandez, who called for the House probe and played a supporting role in Honor Thy Father.

Du initially denied that Axinite Digicinema released Walang Forever, and that he was associated with any of the producers in the MMFF.

However, Fernandez showed a letter dated 2014, from the law firm Alonso and Associates, Inc, which referred to Du as their client. Alonso is a managing partner at the law firm.

Du did not comment further on the issue.

At the hearing, members of the the MMFF 2015 Board of Jurors admitted to lawmakers that it was Du and MMFF ExeCom member Marichu Maceda who told them on December 21, 2015 not to consider Honor Thy Father for the Best Picture category because it had been disqualified. (READ: 'Honor Thy Father' disqualified from MMFF 2015 Awards Best Picture category)

Juror Carmen Musngi said, "While we were doing the deliberation on the 3rd night [of deliberations], we were talking about the first category, which was the Best Picture. When we were talking about the Best Picture, Mr Dominic Du and Marichu suddenly said don't put in Honor Thy Father because it's disqualified."

Two other jurors present at the hearing backed up Musngi's story.

In a controversial move, the MMFF disqualified Honor Thy Father from the Best Picture category of the festival on December 26, a day before the awards night, citing a technicality. According to the MMFF, the producers did not inform the committee that their movie would be screened as the opening film at the Cinema One Film Festival on November 8.

Maceda said they told the jurors not to include Honor Thy Father in the Best Picture category to avoid bias. "We did not want the members of the jury to feel any bias against Honor Thy Father insofar as the other categories were concerned," said Maceda. "Because we felt very strongly that the sanction was only done on the producer and not to the other members of the movie."

Honor Thy Father producers earlier said that they informed the MMFF about the Cinema One screening as early as November 6. Thus the last-minute decision to take the movie out of contention in the Best Picture award was unfair, they added.

Maceda explained the delay: "When we received the letter [from the producers] November 6... it took us one month before the Special [Working] Commitee and the Rules Committee met. At that time. we did not want to bother the newly appointed chairman, and there were so many other [things scheduled]."

The newly appointed chairman is Emerson Carlos, who replaced Francis Tolentino after he quit in October 2015.

Erik Matti's reaction

After the House hearing, Honor Thy Father director Erik Matti said that they had already suspected that a committee member was connected to one of the producers, but couldn't prove it.

"We felt that there was something that was going on. Why Best Picture of all awards, when we all know in the past, pag may award ka sa (if you have an award in) Best Picture, Best Director, ganun, yung mga malalaking (those, the big) awards, it gets a good showing at the box office. It could help your film make money," he said.

Matti also said that although the investigation isn't over yet, it looks like things are going well.

"Coming in, ninenerbiyos nga kami if there's anything that's gonna come out of this kasi, isipin mo... 'di naman madali lang magreklamo diba, na malalaking tao ang mga kinakausap mo, kinukwestiyon, matataas ang posisyon nila sa gobyerno, so... takot kami na wala ring mapuntahan 'to ano," said Matti. "Pero nagpasalamat kami sa Congress, with the congressmen present, na they followed through and they asked the right questions. Maganda so far and sana magtuloy-tuloy toh na okay yung mga discussions."

(Coming in, we were nervous about whether anything was going to come out of this, because if you think about it... it's not easy to complain when you're big people, questioning them, people with high positions in government, so... we were afraid that this wasn't going to come to anything. But we're thankful to the Congress, with the congressment present, that they followed through and asked the right questions. It's been good so far, and I hope the discussions continue.)

Honor Thy Father took home 5 awards from the festival, including Best Director for Matti.  – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – As people in and out of showbiz continued to mourn the death of German "Kuya Germs" Moreno, his son Federico shared what kind of a father, uncle, and grandfather he was to the family.

In an interview with reporters during the second night of Kuya Germs' wake at Mt Carmel on Saturday, January 9, Federico said his father would always ask where he was and if he had eaten already.

"Paano siya maging tatay? Tatawag siya, 'O anak, kumain ka na ba?' Sa tanghali tatawag siya uli, 'O lunch na, kumain ka na ba?' Sa hapon tatawag ulit, 'Nasaan ka na?' Sa gabi, tatawag ulit, 'O nasa bahay na ako, tulog ka na.' With that, we would know how he is as a father," he said.

(How is he as a father? He would call and ask, 'Have you eaten?' At noon, he would call again and say, 'It's lunch already, have you eaten? In the afternoon, he would call again and say, 'Where are you?' At night, he would call and say, 'I'm home already, go and sleep now.' With that, we would know how he is as a father.)

Federico described Kuya Germs as a caring and loving father, as well as a fantastic uncle and grandfather.

"He’s so selfless. He would rather share than spend for himself. All of us, tayo may luho (we have vices). He collects, but hindi siya magarbo (he's not ostentatious)....He drives a very simple car, lives a simple life. He’s so selfless," he said.

If there's one thing he learned from Kuya Germs, it would be the loyalty he showed not only to GMA7, his home network, but also to everyone.

"Loyalty, he’s so known for and pakikisama (getting along with others), which is [what] he’s also known for. What’s so nice about him is he doesn’t have to utter any word. His actions will speak for itself."

Federico admits that as an only son, it will not be easy now that his father is gone, but he will do his best for the family.

"He’s such as caring person. He cares for everybody. He has left a legacy that I hope me, my family, will be able to, kahit (even) in a way, be able to continue. We will really try our best because in the family, we’re not showbiz people. And the legacy he left in the industry is so incomparable," he said.

On January 8, Kuya Germs died following cardiac arrest. In January 2015, he suffered a stroke, and took a leave to undergo therapy. He was last seen during the 2016 GMA 7 New Year Countdown.

Many celebrities have expressed their sadness over his death, saying it will be a long time before someone like Kuya Germs comes again. (READ: Dawn Zulueta, Coco Martin, stars remember Kuya Germs)

Kuya Germs paved the way for many of today's popular stars through his shows, such as GMA Supershow and That's Entertainment. Prior to becoming a star maker and actor, Kuya Germs was a utility worker.

Before his death, Kuya Germs hosted Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman, a late-night variety show. – Rappler.com

David Bowie’s swan song ‘Blackstar’ was ‘parting gift’ to fans

MANILA, Philippines – “Look up here, I'm in heaven / I’ve got scars that can’t be seen” thus opens David Bowie’s last single, “Lazarus” from his 25th and final studio album, Blackstar.

Was David Bowie bidding farewell to his fans? Was he giving clues to his declining health? (READ: Music legend David Bowie dies)

The music video for “Lazarus” depicts Bowie in bleak imagery: desperately convulsing on a hospital bed, and ending with him vanishing into a dark wooden closet.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/y-JqH1M4Ya8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

An allusion to Lazarus, a Christian figure, the song itself – like the album as a whole – can just be seen as an enigmatic reflection on mortality, as several reviews and obituaries have suggested.

It was also originally written for the eponymous Off-Broadway play based on the 1976 sci-fi film The Man Who Fell to Earth, where Bowie starred.

However, it can now be seen in an entirely different light.

His long-time collaborator, Grammy-winning producer Tony Visconti wrote a Facebook status update to say that the release of Bowie’s final album was indeed made as a “parting gift” for fans.

“He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way,” Visconti said. “His death was no different from his life – a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift.”

Visconti went on to explicitly admit that he had known Blackstar was Bowie’s last: “I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it.”

Visconti had worked with Bowie since his second studio album, Space Oddity, released in 1969, up until Blackstar, released on January 8, Friday.

The prolific and legendary British artist succumbed to an 18-month bout with cancer, on January 10, Sunday (January 11, Monday, in Manila). He was 69 years old. (READ: Stars mourn David Bowie’s death)

Details about his declining health had been publicly unknown prior to his death, as obituaries on major news and entertainment channels suggest. “People will now look for hints in his recent music, and they’ll find them,” says The New Yorker in a post-script to its Blackstar feature. – Rappler.com

HOMAGE. 'Toy Story's' homage to 'Star Wars' are just some of the tributes Pixar has paid to classic films over the years. Screengrab from YouTube/What's in The Frame

MANILA, Philippines – If you haven't noticed that Pixar pays tribute to classic films in their movies, YouTube user "What's in The Frame" has you covered.

On January 8, Jorge Luengo Ruiz published a supercut of scenes from Pixar movies set beside scenes from the films they paid tribute to.

From the first Toy Story, which pays homage to Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), Total Recall (1990), and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1991), to their latest release, Inside Out (2015), paying homage to Chinatown (1974), Pixar's movies are filled with hidden gems.

In the video, you can catch scenes from Finding Nemo (2003) too, compared with scenes from Kramer vs Kramer (1979), and The Shining (1980). Some movies were also said to be inspired by Princess Mononoke (1997), Die Hard (With a Vengeance) (1995), and A Clockwork Orange (1971).

Since it was released, Lee Unkrich, director of Pixar's Toy Story 3 and the upcoming Coco, tweeted about the video, saying that some of the tributes were intentional, while others were not.

{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">This is great. Some intentional, some not. Funny how the collective subconscious works. <a href="https://t.co/OIUZ7fxftv">https://t.co/OIUZ7fxftv</a></p>&mdash; Lee Unkrich (@leeunkrich) <a href="https://twitter.com/leeunkrich/status/685673772456656896">January 9, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}

Set to music by Thomas Newman and Michael Giacchino, who have both worked on Pixar movies, the supercut will have you waxing nostalgic, not just for Pixar classics, but also for the movies they've paid tribute to throughout the years.

Did you catch any of these tributes when you watched Pixar's films? Which ones surprised you? Let us know in the comments! – Rappler.com
