Ridley Scott's 'The Martian' takes off in Toronto

TORONTO, Canada – Matt Damon got to relive his childhood fantasies of being an astronaut in Ridley Scott's 3D space epic The Martian, where he portrays a character left for dead on the Red Planet.

The film adaptation of Andy Weir's 2011 book about fictional NASA astronaut Mark Watney (played by Damon) becoming stranded by a sudden storm on Mars and the heroic efforts to bring him home premiered Friday, September 11, at the Toronto film festival.

To stay alive, Watney must use all of his scientific knowledge and limited materials inventively to secure water, grow food and reach out for help, and hope nothing else goes wrong while waiting for a possible rescue.

For Damon and his stellar co-stars, playing astronauts "was like being a little kid...in your bedroom pretending you're in space," he said.

"I don't really want to go to space but I want to pretend to," said Jessica Chastain, who worked with NASA consultants and visited its Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California to prepare for her film role as the mission commander.

Chastain's character presumes Watney is dead and leaves the NASA botanist behind on a Martian plateau.

"I assumed when people went to space that they didn't wear jewelry," she said, recalling her surprise when learning that astronauts wear their wedding ring in space.

One astronaut told her "how important it is when you're in space to keep your ties to Earth," she explained.

Realistic sci-fi

The movie's other stars include Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena ("the first Mexican in space"), Sean Bean and Kate Mara.

It follows other recent space faring blockbusters, including Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.

"The fantasy of space, which is now a reality, is a marvellous platform...where almost anything goes," said Ridley Scott.

This film, he said, "leans heavily on science, the way the NASA people are, the way the JPL people are. This was a much more realistic movie."

It "is really about the reality of NASA and what goes on," said the director of Blade Runner and Prometheus.

The script was pitched as "a love letter to science," said Damon, whose character says to himself when faced with a technical problem in his attempts to get off the arid planet: "I'm going to have to science the shit out of this."

The book ironically pays homage to Scott's science fiction legacy, referencing the tagline from his 1979 hit film Alien: "In space nobody can hear you scream."

But the line was cut inexplicably from the film.

Described by the film festival organizers as a "galactic spin on Saving Private Ryan" (in which Damon played the titular role), the movie pays tribute to space explorers and mankind's enduring thirst for discovery.

"I'm such a nerd when it comes to space exploration now," Chastain said of the experience, adding that she had looked forward most to filming zero gravity scenes done with pulleys.

It was "very surreal," Mara added. "It feels very much like a dance."

But "I would never make it as an astronaut," she confessed. – Rappler.com

2 killed as Tom Cruise movie crew plane crashes in Colombia

BOGOTA, Colombia – Two people died when a plane carrying crew members from a film starring Tom Cruise crashed in Colombia, aviation authorities and Universal Pictures said.

The crew had just wrapped up production on the upcoming Doug Liman film "Mena," when it went down on Friday, September 11, while returning to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellin.

"On behalf of the production, our hearts and prayers go out to the crew members and their families at this difficult time," Universal Pictures said in a statement.

On Twitter, Colombia's civil aviation authority said villagers confirmed two dead and one injured.

The twin-engine plane crashed in a mountainous area in the town of San Pedro de los Milagros around 5:30 pm (2230 GMT or 6:30 am Philippine time Saturday), said Uriel Bedoya of Aerocivil.

Pilot Alan Purwin was among the dead, according to Steve Gatena, chief executive of Helinet Aviation, which owns the plane.

The other two passengers were identified as Jimmy Lee Garland and Carlos Berl.

Cruise, who arrived in Colombia on August 20, recorded scenes there for the film based on the life of American pilot Barry Seal, who worked for drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who was killed in Medellin in 1993.

The crash was the latest in a series of deadly incidents involving film crews.

In March, 8 French nationals and two Argentine pilots died in a helicopter crash while filming a television reality show.

GOING SOLO. Julia Barretto, Piolo Pascual and son Inigo Pascual, and Maja Salvador all walked the Star Magic Ball 2015 red carpet alone. Photos by Manman Dejeto/Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – We always see our favorite leading men and ladies on TV and social media, but we rarely see them all under one roof.

Not everyone walked the red carpet with a date at the annual Star Magic Ball on September 12. Let's take a look at who took a solo trip down the red carpet.

Now remember, just because they went solo doesn't mean they're single though. Some stars' dates were late or chose not to pass through the carpet at all, going straight to the main venue.

Some stars didn't bring dates, but did walk the red carpet with their kids or nieces. Piolo Pascual came with his son Inigo, also a budding movie star.

Jodi Sta Maria was there with her son Thirdy.

Gerald Anderson, meanwhile, walked hand-in-hand with his niece, Lyra.

MANILA, Philippines – Everyone always looks amazing on the red carpet at the Star Magic Ball – but sometimes, our cameras catch candid moments that are every bit as priceless, particularly when it comes to couples in love or actors very comfortable with each other on-screen.

Let's take a look at some cute moments we snapped at the Star Magic Ball 2015 red carpet:

Billy Crawford and Coleen Garcia

Before Coleen posed for solo shots, Billy jokingly insisted on helping Coleen touch up her look.

Ellen Adarna and Ejay Falcon

Ellen and Ejay, just having a ball and giving us tons of adorable pictures to choose from.

Maricar Reyes and Richard Poon

These two could not take their eyes off each other on the red carpet, and were the picture of elegance.

John Lloyd Cruz and Angelica Panganiban

John Lloyd teasingly plastered himself to the wall to give Angelica time to pose alone.

Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano

Enrique took Liza's hand as she navigated the red carpet in her voluminous gown.

Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo

Kathryn held on to Daniel for a while between poses, as he helped her keep her balance.

Erich Gonzales and Daniel Matsunaga

Erich was just blooming on the red carpet, and she and Daniel would burst out laughing as they posed for photos.

MANILA, Philippines – The night's official main event may have been the awards given at the Star Magic Ball, but let's face it – all eyes were on the red carpet to see who wore what to the big night.

All our favorite celebs were dressed to the nines on September 12 at the Star Magic Ball 2015, held at the Makati Shangri-La hotel.

We rounded up some of our favorite looks from the ball below:

Liza Soberano in Michael Cinco

Liza looked like a princess on the red carpet in her Michael Cinco gown, escorted of course, by her Prince Charming, Enrique Gil. Liza kept it fresh with minimal makeup and jewelry. Zoom in on the details on her pink gown, too. Details on her white clutch matched Enrique's white tux.

Here's a back view of Liza's dress:

Julia Montes in Albert Andrada

Julia looked stunning walking down the red carpet in Albert Andrada. The dress might look simple at first glance, but its beauty is all in the details: the sheer fabric that allowed for its low neckline and back cutout, the simple embellishment that defined her waist, and the train that caught our attention the moment she turned around. The dress looked a touch bridal at first glance – but zooming in on the details shows off those winning touches.

Belle Daza in Vania Romoff

On Instagram, Raymond Gutierrez actually revealed that Belle had to finish getting dressed in the car – but you wouldn't know it just by looking at her, as she looked relax and stress-free on the red carpet with pal Iza Calzado. Designer Vania Romoff is well known for clean, fuss-free lines and impeccable fit, and Belle showed that off perfectly.

Here's a look at the back of Belle's dress:

Iza Calzado in Jun Escario

Iza's nude-toned number by Jun Escario was simple and sleek, and set the perfect backdrop for her attention-grabbing accessories. Her iridescent bag and jeweled heels stole the show, as did her jewelry, but Iza definitely didn't overdo it.

Erich Gonzales in Francis Libiran

The detail on Erich's Francis Libiran gown was beautiful, but what really got our attention was the black embellished belt around her waist. While it was a nice touch on its own, the black in her outfit tied in nicely with boyfriend and date Daniel Matsunaga's tux perfectly. Erich was also blooming on the red carpet, all smiles and loving looks exchanged with Daniel.

Bea Alonzo in Alexander McQueen

Last year, Bea went with two Great Gatsby-inspired looks, and this year, she changed it up in simple black and white. But what stood out the most was her absolute poise as she stood and posed, first with Zanjoe and later, solo – she walked the red carpet like a queen.

Kim Chiu in Pepsi Herrera

Kim floated and sparkled on the red carpet in her dress by Pepsi Herrera. Kim changed it up by tastefully showing off some skin, not only when her bodice transitioned into a flowing skirt, but also when she turned around to reveal that the off-shoulder gown was actually backless with a single beaded line cutting across her upper back.

Maricar Reyes in Vania Romoff

Maricar always looks poised and elegant, and last night was no exception. Maricar chose her accessories well too, letting her white dress and its interesting form and shape do all the talking. She glowed from within, looking happy, relaxed, and in love.

Kim Jones in Jun Escario

Not one to settle for a safe choice, Kim can pull off pretty much anything she wears – including an edgier look, featuring a structured white dress with an emerald green clutch, dark choker, and a slicked-back hairstyle

Kathryn Bernardo in Michael Cinco

Kathryn, together with her love team partner Daniel Padilla, won Best Dressed Couple at the ball, and we can see why. The cutouts on her Michael Cinco dress might have been more daring than usual for the Teen Queen, but the cut kept her looking classy and elegant.

Tootsy Angara in Rajo Laurel

Tootsy's look for the Star Magic Ball was all geometric shapes and lines. Tootsy's modern look by Rajo Laurel was cut in all the right places, and showed just the right amount of skin. Tootsy also wore a white gown to the 2014 Star Magic Ball, but this one doesn't recall that at all and had its own shining moment on the red carpet.

Denise Laurel in Vania Romoff

Denise channeled Old Hollywood glamour with her hair let down and wavy, and in a sleek, shiny number that looked like liquid silver when it moved. On the wrong person a slit that high wouldn't have worked – on Denise, it was a contrasting feature to the rest of the gown's sculpted structure, worn comfortably and well.

Julia Barretto in Mark Bumgarner

Julia might have kept it sweet and airy in her pink gown by Mark Bumgarner, but the actress kept her look mature with a slimmer silhouette. No poofy gown, no over-embellishment.

Maja Salvador in Rajo Laurel

Maja's champagne gown by Rajo Laurel was beautiful for its pleating and silhouette, but she amped up the look with all the right accessories. Her gold clutch didn't clash with the rest of the outfit, and she kept the rest of the look simple.

Maja stood tall and serene on the red carpet, and ultimately that's what made her shine.

KZ Tandingan in Yang Bautista

KZ looked fierce in a Yang Bautista number paired with bold lips. The singer has never been afraid to rock an edgy look, and her outfit at the Star Magic Ball 2015 was no exception.

More than anything, it's KZ's confidence, strong poses, and all-around cool vibe that make the look overall.

Ukraine has 'long way to go' on gay rights – Elton John

KIEV, Ukraine – Veteran British rockstar Elton John on Saturday, September 12, said Ukraine still had "a long way to go" in its treatment of the gay, bisexual and transgender community at a conference in Kiev.

"I tell you with great sadness that right here, in this very city earlier this summer, a simple and modest gay pride parade had to be organized at a secret location to try to prevent hooligans from disrupting it and committing violence against the celebrants," he said.

"The march lasted, in all, 10 minutes, the fighting lasted over an hour ...  So I tell you soberly, we have a long way to go," he told delegates at the annual Yalta European Strategy forum.

The singer, who has two sons with husband David Furnish and is a veteran campaigner on gay rights, urged Ukraine to seek ways to promote the rights of those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT).

"Accepting people regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation is today the measure of an open, tolerant and democratic society," he said.

"I ask you to begin this dialogue," he said.

"This is a moral imperative."

Homosexuality used to be punishable by law under the former Soviet Union, and although the legislation was revised following its collapse, homophobia remains socially acceptable in Ukraine where prevailing social attitudes tend to be intolerant towards those in the LGBT community.

Ukraine held its first Gay Pride parade in 2013 but the following year, it was cancelled after police refused to guarantee it would be protected.

This year, around a hundred activists turned out but they were only able to march briefly through Kiev before clashes erupted with protesters throwing stones and rubbish at them.

Around 10 people were hurt in the ensuing confrontation between police and ultra-nationalist demonstrators who came to break up the event.

Highly popular in Ukraine, Elton John had in 2009 tried to adopt a local HIV-positive toddler but was prevented by the authorities as Ukrainian law does not permit couples in same-sex marriages to adopt. – Rappler.com

‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’ Review: More of the same

In a market full of films adapted from dystopian, post-apocalyptic-themed literature, Wes Ball’s The Maze Runner (2014) is remarkable in its being utterly generic. It took all the essential elements of the genre, from the teenagers coping with physical, mental and emotional torture to the ruthless adults who cannot simply understand their plight, and simply held on from start to finish.

That worked, at least for a single film. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials expands the scope of the first film, throwing the surviving kids out into the open where they meet their torturers, most of which are scientists and their lackeys under the very wicked group called WCKD, and basically do the same stunts they have been trained to do inside the titular maze. (READ: ‘The Maze Runner’ Review: Falling at the finish line)

Repetitive thrills

As expected, repetitiveness becomes a problem. The chases and fights, all of which serve the purpose of making the long hauls of expositions more tolerable, are no longer as exciting as they could have been had they been staged the first time around. Essentially, the franchise required a fresher perspective, something Ball, despite all his earnestness, could not provide.

The Scorch Trials starts exactly where The Maze Runner ends. Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his crew have just escaped from the maze that turned out to be some sort of elaborate test. They are rescued by Janson (Aidan Gillen), a suspiciously accommodating man who brings them to an installation where they are kept comfortable before being transported to a promised safe haven.

Of course, as with all literature of the same vein, things are not as what they seem. There is no safe haven. The rest of the world is actually a wasteland where most of the remnants of humanity are either infected with a virus that turns them into rampaging zombies out for blood or desperate to capture Thomas and his ilk for the precious cure they carry with them in their bodies.

Clueless heroes

So the Scorch Trials is basically just a story of how these teenagers jumped from the frying pan and into the fire. The obstacles remain the same, except that they are bigger, more ornate, and grounded with a semblance of familiarity that is supposed to be disconcerting but is really just more of the same.

The cluelessness of the heroes that shrouded the adventures of the first film with a little bit of mystery is now a liability. Now that the audience is introduced to the vastness of the world outside the maze, Ball opts to dish out the details in small chunks and pieces and through convenient revelations that only manage to deter the film from being the exhilarating thrill ride that it should have been.

Photo courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox

Lacking the essential context of why things are happening to them and the world in general, the story becomes devoid of emotion and urgency. Ball relies too heavily on the characters that are also in a way, just vessels of teenage confusion. The film is stuck in a quagmire. It hasn’t evolved. It is a true sequel, a film that cannot exist on its own terms, with nothing new to offer except more of the same characters and a needless extension of a tale that has gotten old.

Middlingmiddle

The Scorch Trials is middling. It indulges in leaving its audience in the dark, alongside its band of characters that are now annoying in how they revel in their boring ignorance of what’s happening in the world. Its blend of teenage angst and the standard elements of the various genres the film apes no longer works as consistently as they should.

Photo courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox

The film has shining moments. However, the action sequences that offer surprising thrills do not remove the fact that everything else is a drag. At this point, Ball should have already graduated from introducing the mythos of The Maze Runner. Sadly, he’s as stuck as his characters. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Didith Garvida, Jessy Mendiola's mom, spoke up on the recent incident betweeen her daughter and actor Enrique Gil, saying that the whole issue, as well as the resulting comments online from bashers, hurt the young actress. (READ: Jake Cuenca mum on Enrique Gil's rumored bad behavior on London flight

In an interview with host IC Mendoza on Showbiz Konek na Konek, Didith said she really wished the fans of Enrique and partner Liza Soberano would stop criticizing her daughter.

"Naguguluhan siya. Nasasaktan siya, she’s sad. Masakit sa kanya yung nangyayari.  Nalulungkot ako kasi sinasabi niya, 'Mama di naman kasi ako sikat.' Sabi ko 'Jessy you have your own name and they have their own name so it’s okay.

(She's confused. She's very hurt, she's sad. It's painful for her what's happening. I'm very sad for her because she said, 'Mama I'm not even known. I said 'Jessy, you have your own name and they have their own name, so it's okay.)

"'Di nila ako paniniwalaan kasi di ako sikat katulad nila.'Don’t do it to my kid, kasi kahit papaano she really works so hard for where she is right now.  Kung sikat man ang anak ko or hindi sikat, she’s still my Jessy and she’s being harassed," Didith said.

('They won't believe me because I'm not famous like them.' Don't do that to my kid, because she really worked hard for where she is right now. Whether my daughter is well known or not, she's still my Jessy and she's being harassed.)

In the end, Didith gave a message to Jessy saying that they have been through ups and downs but that she will always be there for her, and that Jessy should stay strong and show people that she's a fighter.

As for Jessy's harsh critics online, Didith said: "Sa mga sumusulat kay (those writing to) Jessy sa Instagram, salamat (thank you).... okay lang sige lang, write lang kayo nang write. Babasahin lang namin. (We will just continue reading them)."

Earlier, via comments on Instagram, Didith threatened to file a harassment case against actor Enrique Gil if his fans continued to post offensive comments on Instagram.

Harsh words on Instagram

Jessy posted an Instagram photo on September 10, saying in the caption that "the truth will always come out." Many think that this post is in reference to Enrique's actions on a flight from Manila to London.

Enrique allegedly harassed Jessy while drunk on the flight and only stopped when actor Luis Manzano stepped in.

The 3 flew to London with the rest of the ASAP 20 cast for the "ASAP Live in London" show.

Some of the comments on Jessy's post said that she was overreacting and that she wanted attention.

Didith commented on the post on September 11, telling the bashers to stop. "It was not settled in London and you better stop now. There might be consequences for you bashing Jessy. Maaalanganin. Kaya stop na kayo. (So you all should stop.)"

When the bashers continued, Didith warned them to stop or she'd file a case for cyber bullying. “Si Jessy pa ang 'di (is the one who is not) nice, ay iha, what is wrong ba with you? She is nice to the highest level. 'Wag ka na magsalita (Don't speak anymore), okay na. Baka mauwi pa sa hindi maganda ng dahil sa inyo. (This might not end nicely because of you.) So now, I am warning you. You stop na.”

“Cyber crime law. Remember that," she warned.

“Actually, yes she can file a case. So you stop it. Right here, right now," wrote Didith in the comments of Jessy's picture.

Sinasabi ko sa 'yo, tumigil ka. (I'm telling you, stop it.) Do not push me. Ikakasa ko ang pag-file sa idol nyo pag di kayo tumigil. Tandaan nyo yan wag nyo ako galitin. (I will file a case against your idol if you don't stop. Remember that, don't make me mad.)"

Because the bashers would not stop, Didith said that she would file a case against Enrique for harassment.

“For your information, I will file a case against Enrique Gil soon. Because you are not stopping, will let your idol take the consequences of your action, is that what you want? We will make a thorough investigation into this para talagang lumabas ang pinaka-totoong nangyari kasi masyado kayong mapilit!! (so that the truth about what happened will come out because you're all so forceful!)

“Keep commenting this is one of the evidence why we want to file. Keep doing it.

Screengrab from Instagram/senorita_jessy

“Your idol supposedly harassed her and you are harassing her. Evidently, violation against women. Okay, fair enough. One more time you stop and I stop.

Screengrab from Instagram/senorita_jessy

“I don’t know you all but I guess you guys want it this way, we will give it your way," she said.

Didith added that Jessy was hurt, not only because of the incident on the plane, but also because of the words of her bashers online.

“Okay taken. Jessy is our first priority. Shouldn’t you love Jessy more for not saying anything? She is basically not saying anything. You know how hurting is that inside?

Screengrab from Instagram/senorita_jessy

Alam mo ba ang sinabi ni Enrique sa airline kay Jessy? (Do you know what Enrique said to Jessy on the airline?) If I were you, stop provoking me. I will be [a] child like you because you all want to be treated like one. Those words were said and have done harm. So now I've said my piece. You are right, I cannot control you, because you love your idol so much. But I love my daughter more. This is what your mother will feel when something happens like this; to your daughter in the future and the daughter of your daughter.

At kayong nakikisakay, oo magkakaanak din kayo in the future (And for those of you who are just riding along, yes, you will have kids in the future too), so think about that, your right as a woman is being violated, fight for it. You are all my daughters and I will fight for… that is how we think.

"So, when you bash me or you bash Jessy… you bash your sister, your mother, your grandmother and all the women whom you truly love. I hope now you understand," said Didith.

Didith also defended her daughter saying, "She doesn’t care about popularity. She just wants to work. That all she wants. That is all we want, right? To work with dignity. For you to bash her is a very humbling experience she has to take in the sea of people and in the jungle of show business."

On September 11, Enrique admitted to having alcohol on the flight and apologized to Jessy and her boyfriend JM de Guzman for his actions.

A statement from Luis' manager, June Rufino, was released saying that Enrique apologized in person to those involved as well. – Rappler.com

Carly Rae Jepsen, out of the shadow of 'Call Me Maybe'

It has been 4 years since Carly Rae Jepsen took the world by storm with her infectious blockbuster “Call Me Maybe.”

The Canadian pop singer and songwriter’s earworm of an anthem also broke the Internet. It spawned dozens of parodies and video lip-sync covers from erstwhile couple Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez (the one that started it all), to U.S. President Barack Obama (thanks to clever editing), Katy PerryJimmy FallonHarvard's baseball team, or American soldiers in Afghanistan

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/fWNaR-rxAic" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

How could Jepsen follow something once massive and ubiquitous? The music industry has seen too many one-hit wonders come and go. For a while, not even she herself could escape the shadow of “Call Me Maybe,” the lead single out of the other arguably underrated tracks on her sophomore effort, Kiss (2012).

“We had the biggest single in the world last time and didn’t have the biggest album,” her manager Scooter Braun told The New York Times. “This time we wanted to stop worrying about singles and focus on having a critically acclaimed album.”

Jepsen’s answer was Emotion (stylized as E•MO•TION), a record infused with '80s nostalgia. Several months of patience and hard work went into polishing the album, and reportedly more than 200 tracks were whittled down to 12 (16 on the deluxe version). The result is solid and impeccable – achieving near-universal praise.

Writing for Vulturethe pop critic Lindsay Zoladz argued, “Emotion has been championed by critics, discerning music snobs, and anybody else who likes rooting for a well-deserving underdog.” Although the record is still unabashed pop music with its effervescent and danceable tunes, Jepsen curiously acquired some sort of indie “cred.”

Chalk this up, perhaps, to Jepsen sitting in the studio with some names admired in these circles. Jepsen told Stereogum“I wrote with some of the biggest pop writers, and then I wrote with people who I just admired myself with my taste, which is a little bit more left of center.”

There are the Swedes, Shellback and Mattman & Robin, who worked on Taylor Swift’s 1989, but there’s also Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij, Devonté Hynes (a.k.a. Blood Orange), and Ariel Rechtshaid (Haim and Charli XCX).

Jepsen, however, doesn’t entirely ditch the bubblegum sensibilities that helped propel “Call Me Maybe” to the top of the charts.

Instead, she refines her craftsmanship while coming up with a standout like “I Really Like You,” the nearest candidate as a sequel to the 2012 smash hit with its equally catchy chorus, “I really, really, really, really, really, really like you.”

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/qV5lzRHrGeg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Jepsen, fresh off a string of critical successes on Emotion, sat down with the media and candidly answered a few questions – just a day ahead of her Monday concert at the Araneta Coliseum.

On releasing Emotion to critical acclaim

“When it [came] to this particular project, it was something that I didn’t wanna rush. It was something that I wanted to be proud of myself. With everything that I’ve ever released, there’s this sort of grace period, before you sort of share with anyone, where you have to make your own peace with what you’re making and you love it. I really love Emotion.”

On her favorite tracks from Emotion

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/kV9sNmujCPk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

“I think ‘Emotion’ was one of my favorite ones. There’s a reason why I titled the album that. It was one of the first songs that sort of sparked the direction for me, and I’m like, ‘Oh, okay, this is what I want to do.’ In fact, I can remember coming into New York, and I was like, ‘I think it’s gonna be something like this.’”

“’All That’ – I really love that song. […] I can even feel bare naked in a weird way when I play it because it’s such a heart-baring sort of song. I remember the first time we did it on SNL [Saturday Night Live] – same thing. It was really exposing moment, and I’ve never felt that nervous doing anything before.”

“Another song that I think is my favorite, is one of the last songs on the album. It’s a song called ‘Let’s Get Lost’ because – I don’t know – it’s got sax…”

On her songwriting process

“It was two and a half years [working on Emotion], if you spread that out […] I still to this day, am writing at a pretty high pace. […] I was just recently in Malaysia with my guitarist, and we were up in the hotel room working on a new song, and he’s asking me, ‘What’s this gonna be for?’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t know.’ I can’t not do it. I love writing!”

“There’s a realist and this sort of fairytale-ish side of my personality, and I think that I’m constantly battling those two. But when it comes to music, that’s the place where your imagination gets to be at play. You don’t think about the real rules of the world, or how it all kind of sometimes works. It’s a lot more poetic, and I allow myself to go there.”

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/TeccAtqd5K8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

On her sources of inspiration for Emotions

“I’ve [worked] with Rodgers and Hammerstein [material, via Cinderella on] Broadway. I wouldn’t say there’s anything, musically, there was anything there, but their feeling of romance definitely worked in that way.”

“I was really into Solange [Knowles], which led me to Dev Hynes. I was into Sky [Ferreira], which led me to Ariel [Rechtshaid]. I think a lot of these people was into music that I researched, ‘Who produced that? Who wrote that? How can I get a hold of them? Would they want to work with me?’”

“I kind of like old-school '80s artists. I was really into Prince. I remember running to him in the morning [before] Cinderella rehearsals. And then also, early Madonna…”

“[I also get my inspiration from] different places. I go to a session, and we’re all like fresh off the table. It’s a lot about […] that childlike imagination, where you have also no filters about being scared about your idea being stupid. You’re gonna have to immediately trust people and love people when you write with them because you’re really offering up a vulnerable side of yourself.”

“And that just comes from, I think, brainstorming as a group than sort of singing things and trying things on. In that case, you can really fall into a melody or a rhythm that gets you before a lyric does. However, if I’m writing alone, or if it comes from a place where I’d like to […] document a couple of ideas before a session and bringing an idea to the session, that’s usually taking place where the initial spark came in from a lyric."

"I’ve got a real obsession with words. I have a real obsession with relationships. Whenever I go to dinner or if meet somebody new, I’m generally asking them about their love life […] and then writing it down later on.”

“Even with Emotion, […] I wanted it to be something that wasn’t just a reflection of my own personal life, but something that could be a reflection of everyone – so, a universal sort of common thread to it. I’ve felt yearning. I’ve felt that heartbreak. I felt that jealousy. I think, we all have. That’s my fascination with love...”

On how playing Cinderella on Broadway changed things

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/js-ltSslmt0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

“In L.A., [I was in] a session every two days with new writers. For me, that’s not my favorite way to write music, I really like to get in a room with people who I’ve been proven I have a good vibe, and then spend a couple of weeks maybe on one song – even on two – [then] you get it right. And you really, really work it. So I was getting really frustrated, and I couldn’t articulate why this wasn’t working for me. I had a lot of material, but none of it felt like quality.”

“And then the Broadway opportunity came around. My childhood dream was like, ‘Do it! Do it! Do it!’ and I did it. It was the best decision I’ve ever made because not only was it a nice, sort of, departure from this little bubble I’ve been it [with] pop music. It was a whole new world, and it was also a whole new city. It kind of gave me time to reflect on why that wasn’t working and really be able to articulate to my team and everybody, ‘Hey, this is how I’ve been writing songs forever. This is what works for me. When I come back from Cinderella, this is how I like to continue it.’ Everyone was on board, and I started during the process of Cinderella, and I think […] it was really healthy for me in a lot of mental ways, too…”

On what has changed since ‘Call Me Maybe’

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/lEsPhTbJhuo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

“If I look at what I who I was yesterday and who I was last year, it’s like a completely kind of ever-changing thing. I think that reflects the music that I do, too.”

“I think [we went through it] as a happy rush. We were all excited about it. It was ‘Call Me Maybe’ and then I’d taken off. I just moved from Canada to L.A, and I even said I also [got to work] with the ‘Wizard of Oz.’

"This amazing kind of roller coaster was about to take place, but there wasn’t a lot of time to really sit and reflect, and think about mission statements, like, ‘What do I want this album to be? What sort of experimental time do I have to try things on?’ And that’s what I really felt was a crucial thing to ask for. Luckily, I got a team around me who got that, and who were willing to say ‘Take as long as you need,’ like, ‘Come back when it’s ready.’”

On the top of her ‘wish list’ of collaborators

“One of the initial sparks of this album, for me, was when I was in Osaka and I got to see Cyndi Lauper play at a festival [Summer Sonic] there. I’m just a huge fan of her writing. So, if I could have a really big wish list, it would be to work on a song with her one day.”

On collaborating with the most influential hit-makers in the industry

It's pretty surreal. I can remember when I was living in Canada, one of my writing partners, Ryan Stewart. Every time we wrote a song, we would say, 'I wonder what Max Martin would think?' And I'm like, he was sort of, like, the Wizard of Oz.”

“And when I finally moved to L.A. and got my first real break outside of Canada, one of the pinch-me moments was when my label hit me up and said, 'Would you like to go speak in front of Max Martin?' I called Ryan right away and said, 'We're going to go meet the Wizard of Oz!' And that's exactly what it felt like.”

“Since then, not just working with him, but just even some people who aren't as well know but who are also extremely talented – it's one of the greatest gifts of this experience.”

On collaborating with indie darlings Rostam Batmanglij, Devonté Hynes, and Ariel Rechtshaid

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/W374tWnsk70" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

“I wasn’t really sure what was going to happen with this album. I knew that I did want it to feel more mature, and I think that I did try every sort of avenue.”

“I also felt a desire with this album [Emotions] to kind of color a little outside of the lines, and try some sort of collaborations that people wouldn’t necessarily pitch. I ended up meeting Dev Hynes and Ariel Rechtshaid, and some of these producers, [who did] music that I was loving but wasn’t from the same world of pop as me. And I think that’s a gift where you would have two different artists come from completely different places. You make something new together.”

“Rostam, actually, was the one who reached out to me to say, ‘Would you be interested in trying to write a song together?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that sounds incredible!’ I think there’s a desire, not just from pop artists, but – I don’t know – every artist to sometimes do something a little bit different and unexpected.”

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/iBPw0l26L58" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

“Driving to a session, my dad was like on speaker phone with me in the car. He said, ‘Oh, what are you doing today?’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, another writing session.’ The phone cut off, and all he heard was that I said ‘Vampire.’ At the end of the session, he called back, ‘How did it go?’ I was like, ‘Oh, it was really good, we worked on a song called ‘Warm Blood.’ He was like, ‘You wrote a song called “Warm Blood” with a vampire!?’ No, it’s called Vampire Weekend – it’s a band!”

“At the end of the day, I wasn’t really sure what the outcome would be. I just knew that the best songs would […] rise to the top. I must’ve written over 200, and at the end of it, the 17 that you hear are the 17 that just ended up being my favorite ones. It didn’t really matter in my mind, like, who did I work on them with or how will this be received. It was more like, well, these are my favorite tunes.”

On meeting the ‘Chandelier’ singer, Sia

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="http://go.rappler.com/https://www.youtube.com/embed/3gyGno3QPd8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

“That was another incredible, sort of, stars aligning in my life. The first time that I ever saw Sia was when I was bartending at the Media Club in [Vancouver], Canada. It’s just like this really underground sort of music club, and she came in to perform a live show. And I wasn’t supposed to be working that night, but I somehow convinced my manager that I would work this extra shift so I could get, kind of, free tickets to her concert. She blew me away.”

“Then fast forward 3 or 4 years later, I’m in a session with her that was set up by my label, with Greg Kurstin [a frequent Sia collaborator] as well. […] I was very nervous. Generally, I don’t feel nervous, but with her I was really intimidated ‘cause I was such a fan for so long. I showed her the beginning of something I started with my guitarist Tavish Crowe, [a song] called ‘Boy Problems.’ She really embraced it, and then later on we were together on ‘Making the Most of the Night.’”

On having millions of followers on social media

“First of all, I never really think about that […] Seriously, because it’s just that intimidating, and I probably would be frozen with every tweet. I think in general, I look at it as a way to invite people to things and keep them informed about what’s going on.”

“On Instagram, I look at it as a way to kind of document the memories. We kind of go at a pretty intense pace when we’re traveling. It’s a new country almost every 2 days, and that’s really exciting. But there are some times, […] I come at home, and it’s almost like it’s been such a whirlwind. It takes kind of going back into your feeds, and feel like, ‘Oh yeah, I remember that! Oh yeah, it was amazing!’ I think it’s important that I feel like […] an old lady in a rocking chair, still back on my Instagram, laughing at moments like that.”

On her best memory from her 2013 Manila concert

“I remember being kind of scary still, but exciting scary. I think any time that I go on stage, there’s always a two-song moment where I’m just sort of shaky, and it’s not that shaky, necessarily. It just takes me a second to ease into my skin.”

“I can remember still being quite intimidated. I don’t feel those shakes any more lately. It’s luckily kind of just transitioned into just pure excitement and celebration, but I think that’s why I feel very excited about the show is there’s a new kind of confidence that I carry – that I probably didn’t have last time.”

On what to expect on her September 14 show

“The album itself is quite different. I think that affects sort of the energy level of the type of performance that you bring. We’ve got sax, we have kind of a whole new vibe, of this sort of '80s feel. I’m hoping that everyone who comes is either an '80s baby or ready to embrace '80s for the first time – to dance and just enjoy it with us.” – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines- The Miss America pageant has apologized to singer Vanessa Williams, who was a judge and performer at the competition held in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Sunday, September 13.

Miss America CEO Sam Haskell made the apology during the opening of the competition.

"On behalf of today's organization, I want to apologize... for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less the Miss America you are and the Miss America you always will be," he said.

Before becoming a famous actress and singer, Vanessa was crowned Miss America in 1983. However, she was forced to resign after her naked photos, published without her in consent, appeared in Penthouse magazine.

Vanessa said that the apology was "unexpected but beautiful."

"I did the best I could as my reign of Miss America 1984, on behalf of my family, my mother in particular. I'm so honored to be back," Vanessa said.

In an interview with Good Morning America''s Robin Roberts posted by People, Vanessa said that after the scandal, she knew she had to get back on her feet.

"I knew once the dust settled I'd get the chance to show people who I am,"  she said.

Vanessa has appeared in various films and TV shows but is known for portraying Wilhelmina Slater in the comedy series Ugly Betty

Georgia's Betty Cantrell won the title of Miss America 2016 and was crowned by last year's winner Kira Kazantsev of New York. – with reports from AFP/Rappler.com

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Carly Rae Jepsen played her second Manila show on Monday, September 14.

The Canadian singer and songwriter first caught the world's attention with her massive hit, "Call Me Maybe," which also spawned many YouTube covers and parodies.

Jepsen recently released an '80s-inspired studio album, Emotion (stylized as E•MO•TION) to critical acclaim in mid-2015.

She arrived in Manila on Sunday afternoon, September 13, and took time to candidly answer questions from the media in a round table interview. (READ: Carly Rae Jepsen, out of the shadow of ‘Call Me Maybe’)

MANILA, Philippines – WME| IMG  (William Morris Endeavor/IMG ) announced they have acquired the Miss Universe Organization from businessman and presidential candidate Donald Trump.

According to the press release on the Miss Universe website, WME|IMG's purchase of Miss Universe from Trump also includes the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants.

“Having worked closely with The Miss Universe Organization in the past, we understand the incredible potential of the events and the star-quality of the participants,”  Mark Shapiro, Chief Content Officer, WME | IMG said. “The global reach of The Miss Universe Organization and the content opportunities presented by the pageants make this a strong, strategic addition to our portfolio.”

In the same presse release Trump said: “I have truly enjoyed owning the MISS UNIVERSE, MISS USA, and MISS TEEN USA pageants. When I purchased the pageants many years ago, they were in serious trouble. It has been a great honor making them so successful and I have really enjoyed watching the pageants grow throughout the USA and worldwide. The pageants are now in the hands of a great company that will shepherd them to even greater levels of success.”

WME|IMG is known for producing fashion shows in cities such as New York, Berlin and Sydney. They also produced shows such as the upcoming  Macy’s Presents Fashion’s Front Row taking place and global lifestyle festivals including Taste Festivals and Lollapalooza

Before the acquisition, the Miss Universe was shared by Trump and NBC Universal. NBC and Univision, which air the pageant, cut ties with Trump after his comments about Mexican immigrants. (READ: Mexico pulls out of Miss Universe pageant)

Macy's Department store also withdrew their support, while countries such as Costa Rica and Mexico have withdrew their participation in the Miss Universe pageant. The city of Bogota also said they were no longer interested in hosting the Miss Universe pageant.

Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega also spoke up, saying she was disappointed to hear her boss' comments about Mexico.

Last week, Trump announced he bought NBC's share of the Miss Universe, making him the sole owner.

Last June Trump announced he was  running for president of the United States.  with reports from AFP/Rappler.com
