MANILA, Philippines – Following the success of My Husband's Lover and The Rich Man's Daughter, which explored gay and lesbian relationships, GMA 7 has launched another show – this time about the story of a transgender woman's struggles in society.

Called Destiny Rose, the afternoon drama launches newcomer Ken Chan in the role of Joey Flores, who struggles with his identity. After his father (played by Joko Diaz) shuts him away from the family, Joey goes through many struggles and obstacles along the way of fulfilling the dream to becoming a writer, and becoming Destiny Rose. Destiny Rose will also meet Gabriele Antonioni played by Fabio Ide, who becomes her true love.

For Ken, playing the role of a transgender woman and playing the leading role in a series is his biggest break to date. The member of the Saturday late night show Walang Tulugan was visibly emotional during the show's press conference.

"Sobra po akong maasayang-masaya na binigyan po ako ng GMA ng ganitong teleserye. Sobrang nagpapasalamat po ako sa mga bosing." Ken said.

(I am very happy that GMA gave me this type of teleserye. Thank you so much to the bosses.)

In an interview with reporters after the press conference, Ken talked more about his role:

"Marami ako natutunan sa kanila [transgender community], lalo na sa mga buhay-buhay. And physically, marami din akong natutunan sa kanila. Naging mas ano ako mas maarte sa katawan na parang lalo na sa pagda-diet ko. I eat healthy foods...dahil si Destiny Rose dapat maging payat, maging babae," Ken said.

(I've learned so much from them [transgender community] especially when it comes to the day-to-day. I've learned more about them too in terms of physicality. I became more conscious of my body especially with my diet. I eat only healthy foods...because the character of Destiny Rose should be slim, be a woman.)

Ken admitted that prior to doing the show he only knew the differences in LGBT terminology superficially, but now enjoys a deeper understanding gleaned from studying the role.

Ken said he is grateful for the guidance of the show's director Don Michael Perez, and that now is the time for viewers to see this kind of show.

"Yes, most of the viewers, alam ko ready na and excited sila dahil nakikita ko sa mga comments sa Facebook, sa Twitter, sa Instagram na they are all excited for Destiny Rose na talagang kakaibang konsepto..." Ken said.

(Yes, most of the viewers, I know they are ready [for this type of show], because based from the comments on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, they are all excited for Destiny Rose, which is a very unique concept..)

Before Ken was chosen to play the role, other actors auditioned including Jeric Gonzales, who is part of the show as Vince, Joey's first love.

During the press conference, GMA executives, director Don Michael Perez and the writers of the show told the media that before doing Destiny Rose, they consulted with the members of the LGBT community on the approach for the show.

(While the show was being conceptualized, we already told the writers to research this very well. They will not present the concept if the research is not complete. So if there are questions, we can answer it properly.)

"When they do the week's scripts, regularly  may sessions sila with the group of members of the LGBT," she added.

(What they [the writers] do the week's scripts, they have regular session with the group of members of the LGBT community.)

The people behind the show also took the opportunity to clarify why there is no transgender person in the cast for now, saying that there are also plans for more characters on the show.

"Mahaba pa po yung itatakbo nung soap so pina-plot pa namin nang maayos,"said director Don Michael Perez.

(The show still  has a long way to go, so we are plotting it carefully.)

"We tend to be honest as possible sa depiction po namin sa portrayal ni Ken sa role ni Destiny Rose," he added.  "You’ll always have a character of the ideal, yung aspiration, yung minimithi nung tao. Yung tao, yung character ni Destiny Rose dadaan sa madaming heartaches, hindi ibig sabihin na may character ni Fabio Ide, na magkakatuluyan sila. We would like to be as realistic as possible but at the same time aspirational din naman." (READ: Fabio Ide on daughter Danielle, girlfriend Bianca Manalo and role in 'Destiny Rose')

(We tend to be honest as possible in the depiction of Ken's portrayal in the role of Destiny Rose. You'll always have a character of the ideal, that's aspired to, what the person wants. The character of Destiny Rose will go through many heartaches. Just because there's a character of Fabio Ide, doesn't necessarily mean they'll live happily ever after. We would like to be as realistic as possible but at the same time, aspirational also.)

Veteran actor Michael de Mesa, who plays the role of Rosauro Armani Vitto in the show, and who's portrayed gay roles in the past, said the show will give viewers the chance to see the struggles of transgender people.

"I think basically it will give the audience a clearer picture, maybe it will give audience more room to understand what people go through, especially in our society; there's still a lot of people that really look down on gay people," he said, noting the different nuances when it comes to the LGBT terminology.

In the show, Destiny Rose and Gabriele meet by exchanging of letters after Gabriele's family sends a donation to victims of a catastrophe, including Destiny's family. But Destiny's cousin Jasmine, played by Katrina Halili, makes trouble when she pretends to be Destiny Rose to get close to Gabriele.

Model Fabio Ide plays Ken's half-Filipino, half-Italian love interest. Fabio said he was very happy to take on the role, which also gave him a chance to show his range

"I haven't had an opportunity like this before in my life and this part of me being a straight guy – I really find the story very nice, very unique. And when they gave me the role, I thought to myself na bibigay ko yung best ko dito sa show na ito. (I will do my best for this show), kasi this is really a once-in-a lifetime opportunity. People can now see a different kind of Fabio, a Fabio na more on drama," he said.

Destiny Rose also stars Manilyn Reynes, Joko Diaz, Jackie Lou Blanco, Sheen Halili, Jeric Gonzales, JC Tiuseco, Jeric Gonzales  Irma Adlawan and Ken Alfonso. The show premieres on September 14. – Rappler.com

Destiny Rose's love interest

In Destiny Rose, Fabio plays the role of Gabriele, a Filipino-Italian who falls in love with Destiny Rose, a transgender woman played by newcomer Ken Chan. According to Fabio, he considers the role very different and challenging.

"I haven't had an opportunity like this before in my life and this part of me being a straight guy – I really find the story very nice, very unique. People can now see a different kind of Fabio, a Fabio na more on drama," he said.

Fabio said that this was a challenging role with a lot of nuances to consider in the story. "Kasi sa istoryang ito, hindi ko alam na lalaki siya dati so iba talaga ito. It’s not like a guy falling in love with a guy. I’m in love with Destiny Rose thinking na babae siya pero lalaki siya dati. But for me it doesn’t matter because love is love." (In this story, I did not know that she was biologically a man before, so this is different. It's not like a guy falling in love with a guy. I'm in love with Destiny Rose thinking she's a female, but she was male before. But for me it doesn't matter because love is love.)

Destiny Rose also stars Manilyn Reynes, Joko Diaz, Jackie Lou Blanco, Sheen Halili, Jeric Gonzales, JC Tiuseco, Jeric Gonzales Irma Adlawan and Ken Alfonso. The show premieres on September 14. – with a report from Alexa Villano/Rappler.com

Stephen Colbert makes big 'Late Show' debut splash

BIG DEBUT. Stephen Colbert makes his debut on 'The Late Night Show.' Screengrab from CBS.com

NEW YORK, USA – Stephen Colbert made his Late Show debut, giving Hollywood hunk George Clooney a wedding present and eliciting jokes from White House hopeful Jeb Bush in kicking off a new era in American late-night television comedy.

It was a jubilant start for the 51-year-old Catholic family man as he tries to step into the shoes of one of America's biggest television legends, David Letterman, who retired this summer after a 33-year career. (READ: US comic Stephen Colbert succeeds TV legend David Letterman)

He paid tribute to his predecessor with a salute, calling himself "a first generation Letterman fan" and proudly introduced the rapturous studio audience to the renovated Ed Sullivan Theater in New York.

There was cameo from one of his rivals, Jimmy Fallon from NBC's Tonight Show and a stream of jokes ridiculing business mogul Donald Trump, who has trounced Bush in the Republican polls.

Colbert dives into a fiercely competitive market. America's beloved world of late-night television is vastly different from the golden age dominated by the likes of Letterman, Jay Leno and Johnny Carson.

He comes to CBS and The Late Show as himself, shedding the ultra-conservative alter ego that popularized him at Comedy Central.

But he will need to pull out all the stops to hold his own against Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Audience figures are down, young people watch less and less television, and part of the two Jimmys' success has been producing clever segments that go viral on the Internet.

But it was a buzzing start. There were chants of "Stephen, Stephen, Stephen," and cheers and claps from the studio audience.

Bush stepped out in relaxed mode, taking swipe at President Barack Obama but otherwise smiling and joking along. "It connotes excitement," he dead panned when asked about his campaign posters marked "Jeb!"

"Younger, much better looking," was his quick-fire response when asked in what ways he differed from his brother, former president George W Bush.

The inclusion of a political candidate on the first show has been interpreted as a sign that The Late Show could focus on political comedy as the nation navigates the 2016 presidential election campaign.

To Clooney, Colbert gave a present to mark his wedding to human rights lawyer Amal Clooney – a paperweight inscribed with the words "I don't know you."

Arm candy

"What is it like to be the arm candy in a relationship?" Colbert quipped.

Members of the public who attended the show's taping in person were happy when they came out.

"It was very funny. It was different. The vibe was cool. The energy was really nice," said a man in his 20s who gave his name as Marcus.

One couple said they flew all the way from Houston, Texas.

"It was fantastic. It was really great," said the man, refusing to give his name. "I can't wait to see how he continues. He did a fantastic job. He met my expectations big time. He's really a cool guy."

In an interview with The New York Times, Colbert hinted at hopes that his aptitude for political comedy would give him an edge over his rivals in election season.

"This is the 5th presidential election I'm covering in late night. It happens to excite me on a level that it may not excite other people," he told the newspaper.

"It's the biggest story in the world and nobody dies. What could be better than that?"

But there is some criticism that high financial stakes and conservatism of America's big networks can often restrict innovation.

The set and set-up were renovated but essentially the same as in Letterman's day.

Apart from the exception that was Arsenio Hall, a black talk show host between 1989 and 1994, the big evening hosts have also been white men.

Trevor Noah, a South African comic who has a black mother and a white father, replaces Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show later this month. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – On an Instagram post on September 9, actress Julia Barretto apologized for not smiling or waving back at the fans who greeted her while she was in London.

"A lot of you may be judging me, a lot of you may be hating on me right now, and a lot of you may be disappointed with my past actions. You can tell me it's easy to even glance, how fast it is to smile or wave back... Because yes it is, and I apologize for not having done so," wrote Julia.

In her Instagram post, Julia also said that only part of the video was uploaded, and that she did wave back to the fans, even though they were late for their flight back to Manila.

She added, "You are free to say whatever you want to say but never question my love and appreciation for my fans. These people are the ones who helped me get me to where I am now."

Julia's post is a response to a video that circulated on social media and also reposted by radio DJ Mo Twister on Instagram early on September 9.

In the video, Julia's fans can be heard greeting her as she left a building and entered a bus, but Julia does not rspond.

Mo captioned the video, "Like Julia, I don't have the time to acknowledge fans. These commoners just get in the way of me and my destination. Stars push climate deal with benefit song

LOVE SONG TO THE EARTH. Screen shot from YouTube.

NEW YORK, USA – Stars led by Paul McCartney have released a song to push for strong action on climate change, in the latest effort by artists after plans for global concerts fell through.

"Love Song to the Earth," unveiled on Wednesday, September 9, comes less than 3 months before highly anticipated UN-led talks open in Paris with the aim of reaching a long-term agreement to control rising temperatures and their destructive impact on the planet.

Over a melody typical of mainstream Western pop, a succession of stars sing verses about the Earth that include, "Looking down from up on the moon / It's a tiny blue marble / Who'd have thought the ground we stand on could be so fragile?"

Besides Beatles legend McCartney, stars who lent their voices included rocker Jon Bon Jovi, folk-pop singer Sheryl Crow, acclaimed Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo and Jamaican rapper Sean Paul.

English pop singer Natasha Bedingfield, who also participated, said that the message was for people to take care of the planet rather than turn a blind eye.

"With this song we wanted to talk about the environment in a way that would help people feel empowered to do something rather than be paralyzed by fear," she said in a statement.

The song, along with a video that features nature scenes and children holding up placards with slogans, went live Wednesday on Apple Music and will go on general sale on Friday.

Proceeds will benefit the UN Foundation and the US arm of Friends of the Earth, which have both campaigned actively for action against climate change.

Mixed momentum

The effort by the musicians comes after plans for "Live Earth" concerts -- which had been billed to take place on each inhabited continent on June 18 -- failed to materialize.

Former US vice president and environmental activist Al Gore and "Happy" singer Pharrell Williams had announced the concerts at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January.

Despite an active social media presence, Live Earth never announced performers. It later said there a free show on September 19 near the Eiffel Tower in Paris instead of the planned concerts.

But several sources said that Paris concert would not take place either.

The Climate Reality Project, a non-profit group founded by Gore, said it was merging the Live Earth concert with "24 Hours of Reality," an online event on November 13-14 that will feature speakers on the challenges of climate change.

Several musicians are launching events on their own to press for a strong outcome in Paris.

Thom Yorke, the frontman of alternative rock giants Radiohead, and punk godmother Patti Smith are among artists who will take part in a concert and discussion in Paris on December 4.

The following day, French disco artist Marc Cerrone plans a dance party on the Champs-Elysees where he will put on his hit 1977 work "Supernature."

"The star is going to be the planet," Cerrone told the Agence France-Presse in Paris.

Paris is the most anticipated climate conference since the 2009 summit in Copenhagen, but experts warn that commitments by major economies are still below levels needed to prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

French President Francois Hollande warned Monday that a deal hinged on rich nations making firmer financial commitments to hardest-hit poor countries. – Shaun Tandon with Anthony Lucas in Paris, AFP/Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – What happens when your two favorite YouTube musicians cover one of your favorite songs?

Singer AJ Rafael and producer Kurt Hugo Schneider, both of whom started their careers on YouTube, covered Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" in a video posted last Tuesday, September 8.

Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" is quickly becoming a classic, but Kurt and AJ's cover put a different spin to it.

In their cover, AJ's smooth voice blends in with the instrumentals Kurt is known for – using found objects to create music. Kurt used a coin, knives, and even refreshed his Twitter news feed to accomapany the melody of the piano in the background.

As is usual with Kurt, the visuals in the video are just as much a part of the performance as the song. "Thinking Out Loud" is another one of Kurt's one-take videos, making his timing for all the background instrumentals even more amazing.

Both AJ and Kurt were in Manila recently, AJ to attend the wedding of his friend, Gab Valenciano, and Kurt for the YouTube Fan Fest in Manila. Kurt also had a concert in the Philippines with singer Sam Tsui last year.

AJ and Kurt also collaborated last month, on a cover of OMI's "Cheerleader." Listen to it below:

‘Heneral Luna’ Review: Essential viewing

“History was written by those who hanged the heroes.”

The quote from Mel Gibson’s Braveheart (1995) rings truest in the Philippines, where history, or at least the one that was crafted to instill within the people an illusion of a pristine and glorious nation, is as fragrant as a little girl’s fairy tale. Filipinos have been led to believe that the country was birthed from the untainted bravery of our forefathers who dispelled vicious colonizers with both their words and weapons.

However, this history that we are enjoying is one painted with half-truths and veiled lies. Those details of the nation’s past that may or may not have a more lasting impact on our state as a people are either left as footnotes or completely forgotten and neglected. Distilled of dirt and sin, all that is left are perfumed memories that can only fuel a pride that may be as misplaced as it is dangerous.

History in cinema

Local cinema has mostly been complicit to this bamboozlement. Most of the films that have been made to tackle the nation’s history have portrayed the prominent men and women who fought for our freedom as saints, almost bereft of faults and mistakes.  (READ: Heneral Luna: Para sa bayan o sarili?)

Line them all up, from Carlo J. Caparas’ Tirad Pass: The Story of Gen. Gregorio del Pilar (1997) to Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s Rizal (1998) to Mark Meily’s El Presidente (2012), and all you’ll see are narratives that lead only to the goal of sanctifying the historical figures they center on. Even Enzo Williams’ Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo (2014) ended up putting its titular hero on a pedestal even if it had the audacity to dwell on some of the details of the hero’s death at the expense of another historical figure. The few films that managed to shape the historical figures as actual humans instead of icons and idols are films with too small a budget to be able to pull off the requirements of a period piece. Mike de Leon’s Bayaning 3rd World (2000) ingeniously dissected the famous myth of Rizal. Mario O’Hara’s portrayal of Andres Bonifacio in Ang Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio (2010) is so laced with humanity that a lot of its viewers considered it close to sacrilegious.

Bridging the divide

The divide between the gutless but glossy epics and the braver but more intimate independent productions is so immense. As a result, movie-going masses are fed with didactic rubbish that are designed primarily to treat viewers like kids who prefer their stories visualized like soap operas than read from a textbook, oblivious of the fact that there exists another vein of historical cinema that dares to ask more questions than provide the same answers over and over again.

Jerrold Tarog’s Heneral Luna provides that essential middle ground. It is a film that is crafted with just enough meticulousness a reasonable budget can afford but does not pander to common but erroneous knowledge and wisdom. Instead, it goes straight to the point of unravelling those details in history that were left out by those who hanged the heroes. Tarog’s film is an immense risk, one that is probably fueled not by quick profit but by a profound desire to unmask demons of idols.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/I_T1ykhy3Fg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Tarog cleverly starts his campaign with Antonio Luna, who has always been known as a gifted military strategist, capable of leading an army composed of farmers plucked out of nowhere to victory against both Spanish and American foes. His tragic demise paints a picture of what was wrong and what is still wrong in the country.

In a way, Luna personifies the fractured hero that defines the country’s fractured history. His life, like history, has been severely whitewashed with great deeds brought to the fore while deficiencies in character are veiled out of sight.

What Tarog does to Luna is to treat him with enough respect to release him from being just an object of this victor’s history we have been blindly celebrating throughout the years. Tarog makes him human, drawing him with virtues as well as warts, and in so doing, creates an essay of everything that is wrong in our nationhood.

Intent and craft

What is most fascinating about Tarog’s Heneral Luna is that it does not place its intent ahead of its craft. The film is beautiful to gaze at. The score made by Tarog is subtle during moments when the drama does not require distracting melodies, but hauntingly intense at the high points.

The film is plotted precisely, never really focusing on the larger aspects of history but on the smaller stories that perfectly construct a hard-hitting picture of a revolution built on suspicion and dissent.

John Arcilla is excellent as Antonio Luna. His performance displays an innate understanding of the character. Driven not by boring reverence but by his own interpretation of what exactly is noble madness, Arcilla is exhilarating to behold in his various interpretations of Luna’s many personalities. As ferocious leader of a seemingly hopeless army, he is rabid and stern. As a pal to his trusted lieutenants, he is unpredictably hilarious. As son to a devoted mother, he is heartbreakingly dear, echoing the same sentiments he has for his family as if it were for his motherland.

While Arcilla dominates the picture with his prodigious performance, Mon Confiado comfortably stays at the side, playing Emilio Aguinaldo, portrayed in the film as a cunning puppeteer instead of the victorious liberator of the Philippines, with such engrossing sobriety. Confiado’s Aguinaldo is vicious in his quietude, amply balancing Arcilla’s Luna, who is as boisterous as he is outwardly violent. It is a generous performance, one that gives the film deeper layers as opposed to being just a battle of wits between prominent figures of the past.

Beyond stereotypes

Ambiguity is not typically regarded as a virtue when it comes to historical films about national heroes. Most of the films that have tackled our history past have a definite agenda of feeding their viewers with a very general emotion of pride for one’s country.

Heneral Luna, while precise in its storytelling and in its depiction of the major players of the revolution, evokes ambiguous emotions about a nation that has been revealed to be built on a rickety foundation of questionable motives and personalities.

Tarog is as blunt as he is poetic. He does not shirk away from detailing the violence of war. In fact, he often laces the gruesome deaths he stages with humor, perhaps to reflect on the folly of war despite its inevitability. Amidst the indulgence in spilling blood and exploiting gunpowder is a tenderness that is genuinely affecting.

Heneral Luna begs you to look beyond the stereotypes of both the man and the history that has been made around him. It begs you to see everything with clearer eyes, with just enough cynicism, and more importantly, without the influence of those who have the greatest to gain for turning our history into a pageant of brave and unblemished patriots, of those who hanged heroes without owning up to their sins. – Rappler.com

DISRESPECT? Enrique Gil allegedly causes a commotion during a flight. Screengrab from Instagram/@enriquegil17/Manman Dejeto/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Did Enrique Gil and Luis Manzano argue because of how Enrique treated Jessy Mendiola?

This was the question many netizens asked on social media after reports surfaced that Enrique was allegedly drunk and causing trouble while on a plane to London.

All 3 – Luis, Jessy and Enrique -- were part of the crew of ASAP 20's "Live in London" show last week.

At the press conference for Pasion de Amor's second chapter, Thursday, September 10, actor Jake Cuenca, who was on the same flight as Jessy and Enrique, wouldn't comment about what happened, saying he was asleep when the incident happened.

"Nabasa ko siya, nagulat ako, natawa ako. I was really not involved with the issue.... Hindi ako nagmamalinis or anything or what, but nagulat ako kasi I was not really involved...," he said.

(I read about that, and I was surprised, I was amused.. I was really not involved with the issue... I'm not washing my hands of anything or what, but I was surprised because I was not really involved.)

"Noong umaga, tumawag sa akin lahat nung mga taga-Star Magic congratulating me na ‘Uy! nag-mature ka na talaga, ganyan, na napalipasan ko na yung mga ganun. Aminin naman natin na I’m always part of controversies especially nung bata ako."

(That morning, I got calls from people in Star Magic congratulating me that I've matured, that I've seen something like this through [without incident]. We all know that I've been part of controversies, especially when I was younger.)

"But like I said, malinis ang konsensiya ko (my conscience is clear), I didn’t do anything wrong. And on behalf of everyone who was involved kasi madaming (a lot are) involved…I can’t be their spokesperson and answer these questions.

"You have to understand a lot of these people are my friends also…sa akin lang (for me), I wasn’t involved and I think you should be interviewing the right people involved in the incident."

When asked about his reaction to Jessy getting involved, Jake repeated his statement that he cannot speak for those involved in the incident. The two previously starred together in Maria Mercedes and at one point were linked to each other.

As for Enrique, Jake said: "Ako ang makakapagsabi na (I can say that) Enrique has a pure heart. He’s such a great guy and in incidents like this na okasyon na maraming taong involved, na maraming na agrabyado (and in occasions like this where many people are involved and who were aggravated), the best thing in a moment in time like this is to take responsibility for your actions."

Plane incident

In an interview with IC Mendoza on Showbiz Konek na Konek, a witness, who did not reveal his name, said that he saw Jessy and Enrique along with two other people who were also allegedly intoxicated.

“Sinabi nung narinig namin na huwag niyo na painumin, ganun. Pero parang nag-iinuman pa yata sila,” he said. (We heard someone say not to give any more drinks. But I think they were still drinking.)

The witness said that he saw Enrique touching Jessy’s shoulder, that he wanted to whisper something to her, but that she was ignoring him. That’s when Luis entered the picture.

Kasi nakita namin na magkatabi si Jessy at si Luis. Tapos syempre lalaki siya, nakikita niya may binabastos na babae, syempre ipagtatanggol niya. Pinagsabihan niya.” (I think because Jessy and Luis were seated side by side. As a guy, Luis saw the girl was being disrespected so he defended her. He talked to him.)

When asked what Luis said, the witness heard Luis tell Enrique to control himself, saying that drink should only stay in the stomach.

But it did not end there because Enrique was heard allegedly shouting and cursing Jessy and Liza Soberano, Enrique’s on-screen partner. Liza was also said to have not been paying attention to him.

Jessy on social media

Star Magic has yet to issue a statement on the incident, but Jessy posted a cryptic message on Instagram, Wednesday, September 9, addressed to someone who has apparently been "fabricating stories" – though Jessy did not mention anyone by name.

"The truth will always come out no matter how you lie about it. You know what you did, so don't try to squeeze yourself out by fabricating stories. Even trying to ruin other people's relationship with your twisted mind. Someone heard and saw what you did. What goes around comes back around brother," she wrote.

Meanwhile a report from Pep quotes Enrique's camp as saying: "Wala naman daw. Nagkulitan lang. (Nothing, they were just goofing.) You can ask Luis pa daw, it was nothing as we know when boys have a few drinks. That’s all po.”

Liza Soberano meanwhile posted a photo of her and Enrique, Thursday, September 10, with no comment on the issue.

Enrique also shared a photo of him and Liza on Wednesday, September 9, and shared mostly God-centric posts on Instagram in the past days.

ELLEN DEGENERES. The comedian has a lip sync battle against Jimmy Fallon. Screengrab from YouTube/The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

MANILA, Philippines – We've seen our fair share of celebrities battling it out on Jimmy Fallon's "Lip Sync Battle" segment, but this one – where Jimmy went against fellow comedian Ellen Degeneres while Justin Timberlake stood as judge – might just take the cake.

The battle's rules are simple: The participants get to lip sync two songs each, but their opponents don't know what the other is going to sing next.

The battle started out slow with Jimmy singing The Killers' "Mr Brightside" and Ellen going for Diana Ross' "Do You Know Where You're Going To."

It picked up speed though, when Jimmy performed – with all the right dance moves – what he called "a pop culture phenomenon:" "Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)" by Silento.

Ellen followed it up with "Bitch Better Have My Money" before Justin declared a winner.

So who won? Watch the video above to find out!

Jimmy battled with Ellen in the September 9 episode of his Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The segment has since turned into its own show called Lip Sync Battle, where celebrities battle it out onstage.

MANILA, Philippines –Ellen Adarna said that she and Pasion de Amor leading man are still getting to know each other.

At the press conference for the show's second chapter on Thursday, September 12, Ellen said that they go out, but nothing is official.

"Getting to know each other pa lang. Tapos lumalabas kami. Yun lang.

“Saka hindi pa ako ready kasi kaka-break ko lang ng ex-boyfriend ko, e,” she said. (We're still getting to know each other. And we just go out. And I'm not yet ready because I just broke up with my ex-boyfriend.)

She also said that she's looking forward to the upcoming Star Magic Ball on Saturday.

"Chill muna ako ngayon. Baka pag masobrahan ako ng excitement, baka ano mangyari.

"Chill lang muna ako. Mag-usap na lang tayo sa Saturday." (I'm very chilled about it. I might get so excited, that something happens. Let's talk on Saturday.)

Ejay's personality

Ellen said is not closing her doors to the possibility of her and Ejay becoming more than just an on-screen tandem. In fact, Ejay even helped her moved into her new apartment.

"Sobrang bait. Para siyang babae minsan in so many ways, [in that] he’s very sensitive.

Kasi ako, mahilig akong mang-asar. Minsan inaasar ko siya. Hindi ko naman intention to hurt him. Tapos minsan nagtatampo-tampo siya sa mga ganyan. Pabebe boy!"

(He's very nice. He tnds to act like a girl in so many ways, he's very sensitive. Me. I like to tease people a lot. And I tend to tease him a lot. It's not my intention to hurt him. Sometimes, he just sulks about it.)

Ejay meanwhile jokingly defended himself, saying he gets a bit jealous when Ellen compares him to James Reid.

“Actually, lagi niya akong... kasi guwapung-guwapo siya kay James Reid. Tapos lagi niyang sinasabi, ‘O, wow! Guwapo ka dito ha, James Reid!’  (Actually she always...she really finds James Reid very handsome. And she would always say 'O, wow! You look so handsome here, James Reid!')

"Gusto ko sabihin niya, ‘Guwapo ka dito, Ejay!’" Ejay joked. (I want her to say 'You look handsome here, Ejay!)

Ejay on Star Magic Ball and Ellen

Ejay meanwhile said that he is very excited to take Ellen Adarna the ball. He even said that he and Ellen have even discussed their outfits for the big night.  (READ: Star Magic Ball 2015: 9 Couples, love teams we can't wait to see)

"Opo. Nag-usap naman kami kaya abangan n’yo na lang ang pag land namin sa Star Magic," Ejay said pertaining to their tandem known as team Ibon due to their family names. (Yes. We've talked do just watch when we land in Star Magic.)

As for his reportedly courting on Ellen, Ejay said he would rather not use the word "panunuyo."

"Siguro ayaw kong gamitin na term na panunuyo. Siguro mas kinikilala ko si Ellen. Eni-enjoy ko yung makasama siya , yung mga friends namin, pag lumalabas kami. So eni-enjoy muna namin.

(I don't want to use the term "wooing." I guess I'm getting to know Ellen. I'm enjoying her company, when we are with friends, when we go out. So we just enjoy our time together.)

"And ayaw kong sabihin, ayaw kong gamitin yung term na nanliligaw or panunuyo kasi baka maging komplikado po. So doon muna ako sa enjoy muna namin ngayon yung sitwasyon namin na magkatrabaho na minsan nararamdaman ko yung kilig pag magkasama kami. Inaamin ko iyon," he said.

(And I don't want to use the term courting or wooing because it might get complicated. So as I said, we just enjoy what we have, the situation that were together at work and sometimes I do feel giddy when we're together. I'm admitting that.)

Asked what he likes about Ellen, Ejay said that she can get along with anyone.

"Kasi cowboy siya. Kahit saan mo siya dalhin kaya makipag-bonding sa isang tao na social, jologs sa lahat …Alam naman natin laki siya sa yaman. Mayaman siyang tao pero kahit saan mo siya dalhin, parang hindi siya maarte and pagnakilala niyo siya, mabuti siyang tao."

(She's a cowboy. Wherever you bring her, she can bond with anyone... we all know she comes from a wealthy family. She's well-off, but wherever you bring her, she's not a snob and when you meet her, she's a very nice person.)

As for their tandem on the show, Ejay said he's really grateful for the support.

"Ngayon lang ako nakaramdam ng finally may love team na ako na talaga ang mga tao excited kami makita sa labas, excited sa Star Magic Ball kasi kami yung magkasama. So nakakatuwa."

(This time I really felt that I'm part of a love team that everyone is excited about, that people are excited when they see us out, that they are exicted for the Star Magic Ball because we will be together. So it's really flattering.)

Ejay also said that more twists and challenges will come into the show now that the Samonte brothers will once again seek revenge for wrongdoings against them.

Aside from Pasion de Amor, Ejay is also doing Wansapanataym: I Heart Kuryente Kid with Alex Gonzaga. – Rappler.com

NEW YORK, USA – Leading Republicans say that a nuclear agreement with Iran is the end of the world, but R.E.M. doesn't feel fine about the use of its song.

Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz played R.E.M.'s classic song "It's The End of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" at a rally near the US Capitol on Wednesday to denounce the deal.

R.E.M., which disbanded in 2011, said that the use of its song was unauthorized and that it was asking candidates to stop playing it.

But the band added: "Let us remember that there are things of greater importance at stake here."

"The media and the American voter should focus on the bigger picture, and not allow grandstanding politicians to distract us from the pressing issues of the day and of the current presidential campaign," a statement said.

The statement came after frontman Michael Stipe was quoted as sending an email to The Daily Beast website in which he used profanity to denounce the "attention-grabbing, power-hungry little men" who used his song.

R.E.M., which emerged as a favorite of college alternative radio in the 1980s, is known for its left-of-center activism.

Stipe has been outspoken on issues such as gun control and animal rights, causes that are anathema to most conservative Republicans.

Under the agreement with 6 powers including the United States, Iran has agreed to limit its nuclear program in exchange for relief from crippling sanctions. President Barack Obama says it will reduce the chance of conflict, while opponents say it doesn't go far enough.

US politicians, especially on the right, have frequently struggled to find campaign songs from sympathetic artists.

Left-leaning musicians Neil Young and the Dropkick Murphys have voiced outrage over use of their songs by Trump and fellow presidential contender Scott Walker respectively.

However, Dee Snider, the frontman of heavy metal band Twisted Sister, gave his blessing for Trump to play the band's angry 1984 anthem "We're Not Gonna Take It." – Rappler.com

At dahil po doon, (And because of that) I want to apologize to my brothers and sisters from Star Magic. I sincerely apologize to Jessy, to JM (De Guzman, Jessy's boyfriend)  if ever I offended him in any way, I'm sorry.

In the same report, June Rufino, Luis Manzano's manager in a statement confirmed a confrontation did occur but was fixed immediately.

“There was an altercation. But apologies were made and accepted. It was actually Enrique who apologized to the aggrieved party.”

Enrique was accompanied by his on-screen partner Liza Soberano, who also thanked their fans for showing their love and support. "Thank you for understanding. Andiyan lang kayo sa panahon na kailangan kayo ni Quen (Enrique), sana kahit nangyari po lahat ng nangyari, hindi po kayo magsawa na magpakita ng pagmamahal and to support Quen." It was previously reported that Enrique was intoxicated on a plane ride from Manila to London on September 4. Enrique's inebriation caused him to harass actress Jessy, prompting actor Luis Manzano to step in. (READ: Jake Cuenca mum on Enrique Gil's rumored bad behavior on London flight)

According to Pep, a witness saw actors Paulo Avelino and Jake Cuenca give Enrique alcoholic drinks. Both Paulo and Jake denied that they gave Enrique any alcohol, saying they were both resting at that time.
