MANILA, Philippines – Broadcast journalist Karen Davila could not help but air her disappointment over the experience her family had during their vacation in Siargao.

In a Facebook post, Karen, who is vacationing with her kids and husband DJ Sta Ana at Isla Cabana, wrote that when she and the family got to the resort, she immediately booked surfing lessons for her two boys David and Lucas.

According to Karen, the resort contacted Junrey Taoy, a seasoned surfing instructor. He recommended another friend of his, Jocol Valerio, to train David, who has special needs.

"I specifically told Junrey and Jocol, David needed special attention as he has challenges in coordination - being in the autism spectrum. David however is sporty and trains regularly, swims quite well, boxes and runs. Jocol said, almost flippantly, 'madali lang yan, kaya yan.' (That's easy. That's possible.)"

Karen then wrote that her kids trained at the Jacking Horse, the beginners section of the beach, which was crowded with a lot of people.  While the kids went to do surfing, she and DJ were just lying down at the beach.

It was after a few minutes when she saw that her son had scratches and bruises.

"Around half an hour after....our son David ran to us BLOODIED, with his rash guard ripped apart and said, 'Mom, I had an accident!'. I have to say, I was in a moment of suspended disbelief. My husband immediately attended to my son, as they searched for a life guard, a medic or a small first aid station in Boardwalk Cloud 9. I on the other hand, started calling out for my smaller son, Lucas who was still surfing on the beach," she wrote.

Karen said that what upset her the most was that Jocol disappeared after the whole incident while her son suffered "crisscrossing abrasions," cuts, gashes, and bruising.

She wrote, "What got me very angry was Jocol Valerio, the trainer - suddenly dissappeared! My husband said after showing him the sari sari store where to buy the Betadine, cotton and gauze, he left them. No one was there to assist my husband or my son who was bleeding! No nurse, no first aid, NO ONE."

The owners of the resort offered to drive them to the nearest hospital. Upon arriving, Karen said she was surprised at that the hospital had no anti-tetanus shots or medicines needed.

She then got the chance to talk with the mayor of General Luna, Jaime Rusillon, and his daughter, doctor Romina Rusillon. She found a few more things of concern, including the lack of a first aid clinic.

"Now, let me make it clear. I am well aware, accidents happen anywhere in the world. Surfing is an extreme sport. But so is skiiing, bungy jumping, paragliding, diving....but accidents can be prevented. And they are in many tourist destinations by putting safety measures and first responders in place," she said.

Karen also said she was shocked by the reasons the mayor told her about the lack of medical facilities and equipment.

"Karen, we're a 5th class municipality and we lack doctors, and we are not ready for the influx of tourists, we were shocked”

"WHAT?! I’m not going to detail... but wasn’t P1.2 BILLION allocated for Siargao to improve infrastructure to boost tourism? Wasn’t a multi million sports complex built?! All this infra and Siargao can’t afford to professionalize its trainers, put full time first aid clinic and life guard for tourists to support the VERY industry that put it’s name on the map?"

She also said that she was able to talk with Nino Barbers, who said the resorts are on their own, with no help from local government units.

"Now, this is ridiculous. Siargao thrives on tourism. Both the LGU and resort owners, businesses are interdependent on the success of the island.

"I call on the DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM to act on Siargao right away... life guards and first aid clinics at the beach ARE A MUST. AN EVERY DAY RESPONSIBILITY. It’s time we professionalize surfing instructors as they do in other countries. Let’s stop being a backyard operation that may cost the lives of people."

Karen said despite the incident, she and her family are still grateful, as her son is safe, all things considered.

"I want to highlight this so action can be taken before anything worse happens. Hopefully, something good will come out of this for Siargao," she said. – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA – Hollywood action star Arnold Schwarzenegger is in a stable condition after undergoing emergency open-heart surgery, his representatives said Friday, March 30, adding that his first words on waking were "I'm back."

The 70-year-old actor turned activist – famous for the catchphrase "I'll be back" – was in a Los Angeles hospital Thursday to have a valve replaced and developed complications, according to his spokesman Daniel Ketchell.

Doctors rushed the "Terminator" and "Predator" star into theater for open-heart surgery, operating for several hours, according to reports in the US entertainment press.

Schwarzenegger, a former Mr Universe, underwent non-urgent heart surgery 21 years ago to have the valve replaced, due to a condition he said was congenital and nothing to do with steroids.

"That 1997 replacement valve was never meant to be permanent, and has outlived its life expectancy, so he chose to replace it yesterday through a less-invasive catheter valve replacement," Ketchell said. 

"During that procedure, an open-heart surgery team was prepared, as they frequently are in these circumstances, in case the catheter procedure was unable to be performed.

"Governor Schwarzenegger's pulmonic valve was successfully replaced and he is currently recovering from the surgery and is in stable condition."

Schwarzenegger revealed in his book "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story" that he initially kept that first operation a secret from his wife, Maria Shriver, by telling her he was on vacation in Mexico.

In an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" he said his doctor told him he was "crazy" when he said he planned to keep the operation quiet from Shriver.

Iconic line 

"He said 'your wife is pregnant, what do you mean you are not going to tell her?'" Schwarzenegger recalled.

"I told him: 'Here is the plan, I am going to have the heart surgery, you do it quietly, no one knows about it, we do it at six in the morning. Four days later I am out of here and I go to Mexico and I will tell Maria I am down here, a little busy and I am on vacation, when I come back I'll be tanned and no one will know.'"

The Austrian-born former bodybuilder was voted in as governor of California in a historic 2003 recall vote – but proved the win was no fluke by routing opponent Phil Angelides to get re-elected.

Cedars-Sinai hospital refused to confirm Schwarzenegger's treatment, citing privacy laws, but his spokesman publicly thanked the medical team for their "tireless efforts."     

Ketchell confirmed that Schwarzenegger's first words when he woke up after surgery were, "I'm back," a play on his trademark film line.

He first used it in 1984's "The Terminator" and over the next 34 years repeated the phrase – or close variations – in the sequels, as well as "Commando," "Raw Deal," "The Running Man," "Twins," "Total Recall," "Kindergarten Cop," "Last Action Hero," "Jingle All the Way," "The 6th Day" and "The Expendables II."

He revealed years later that he'd had difficulty pronouncing "I'll" and tried, unsuccessfully, to persuade "Terminator" director James Cameron to change the line to "I will be back."

SEOUL, South Korea – Korean pop (K-pop) stars led a group of South Korean musicians departing for Pyongyang on Saturday, March 31, to take part in the latest set of cross-border cultural performances ahead of next month's rare inter-Korean summit.

The 120-member group, including top girlband Red Velvet, flew from Seoul's Gimpo airport aboard a chartered civilian flight to Pyongyang via the rarely used direct air route between the two Koreas, as a rapprochement on the peninsula gathers pace.

"This performance in Pyongyang will add momentum to inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation that resumed with the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics" in the South, said Culture Minister Do Jong-hwan, who led the group.

Under the theme title "Spring is Coming," South Korean musicians will perform a concert in Pyongyang on April 1 before a joint show with North Korean artists at the capital's 12,000-seat Ryugyong Jong Ju Yong Gymnasium on April 3.

While in Pyongyang, Do said, he will meet with North Korean officials to discuss further cultural and sports exchanges between the two Koreas that have restarted after a decade-long hiatus.

The two rivals on Friday, March 30, agreed a date for next month's inter-Korean summit – the 3rd ever of its kind following 2000 and 2007 meetings – at Panmunjom truce village on the heavily fortified border on April 27. (READ: North, South Korea agree to hold summit on April 27)

Following the meeting between the North's leader Kim Jong-Un and the South's president Moon Jae-in, landmark talks are planned between Kim and US President Donald Trump, which could come by the end of May.

The rapid rapprochement was kicked off by last month's Winter Olympics in the South and comes after a year of heightened tensions over the North's nuclear and missile programmes, which saw Kim and Trump engage in a fiery war of words.

Together with athletes and cheerleaders, the North sent musicians led by Hyon Song-wol – founder of the country's popular Moranbong band – to the South to celebrate the Games.

The shows in the North – the first of which will take place at the 1,500-seat East Pyongyang Grand Theater on Sunday – will be taped and edited by a South Korean video crew to be made into a joint TV program for both countries, Yonhap news agency said.

‘Love Maze’

The South Korean musicians taking part include singers and bands from a variety of genres, ranging from traditional folk songs to trendier K-pop, while some 20 taekwondo performers have also travelled.

Among those due to perform are Cho Yong-pil, the influential 68-year-old "King" of K-pop who performed a solo concert in Pyongyang in 2005, and Choi Jin-hee, 61, who took to the stage in the North in 1999, 2002 and 2005. 

Her 1984 mega hit "Love Maze" was reported to be late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's favorite song, and is credited with helping South Korean pop culture gain a following in the socialist state.

"Love Maze" is often heard playing in Pyongyang restaurants, with its romantic lyrics altered to adulation of their leader.

Top K-pop girlband Red Velvet will also perform in Pyongyang, venturing onto stages more traditionally occupied by North Korea's own mega girl group the Moranbong band, who are famous for their fast-paced patriotic songs.

Seohyun, a 26-year-old star from K-pop group Girl's Generation, will act as a master of ceremony for the events in Pyongyang.

She made a surprise appearance alongside a North Korean classical music ensemble during their performance in Seoul last month.

Many North Korean defectors say they have seen South Korean TV dramas and heard K-pop music through blackmarket USB drives in the North despite an official ban on the "decadent capitalist culture." – Rappler.com

In Ernest Cline's Ready Player One, Wade Watson is the ideal underdog. He is an overweight high-schooler, an unapologetic nerd about everything and anything related to pop culture, who resorts to the Oasis – a virtual reality game – to live the life he can't possibly have in the real world, which, considering he is living in a neighborhood built out of trailers stacked on top of each other, is pretty much hopeless.

His only way out of his sorry fate is to inherit the wealth of Oasis founder and fellow nerd James Halliday by finishing first in the game he programmed inside the Oasis. The game will have players race for a literal Easter Egg by solving puzzles that will require them to be more than just familiar about Halliday's obsessions with pop culture artifacts from the '80s.

Less an underdog

In Steven Spielberg's spectacle-filled adaptation, Wade, played by Tye Sheridan, is less an underdog and more the typical blockbuster protagonist, a charming-enough lad who would not just be capable of physical stunts but would also look graceful doing them. He is still dirt poor and still lives with his aunt in the same dingy neighborhood that unsubtly depicts the film's choice of dystopia. However, instead of being opposite of his cool Oasis avatar, Wade seems to be almost similar in terms of look and swagger.

Part of the allure of Cline's novel is its ability to flesh out a world where humanity has been granted a way to realize their fantasies. In fact, the book's most stirring moments are hardly the ones woven into the adventure to unravel Halliday's mystery, but the ones wherein the characters unmask their Oasis personas and, in turn, reveal the underlying necessities of their double lives.

Spielberg's Ready Player One still has remnants of that pertinent theme of Cline's work, but it is clear that the film has other things. The film introduces a lot of changes, some of which render the adaptation a much tamer work, both in terms of its confidence in the source material's celebration of pop culture and its depiction of humanity's greed and depravity. It is more vibrant and joyous, rarely touching on the book's often bleak portrayal of a future where corporations have taken over civilization.

A different beast altogether

It is probably a good thing.

Cline's work stumbles when it drowns in details, and Spielberg has the intuition to know what works as cinema. His Ready Player One has rampaging races on streets where dinosaurs out of Jurassic Park and King Kong roam instead of solitary characters playing 8-bit arcade games. It has an irreverent take on Stanley Kubrick's The Shining where the characters interact with the infamous movie's most famous horror set-pieces instead of a word-for-word replay of obscure cinematic gems from several decades ago.

Spielberg recruits common sense in carving a blockbuster out of a book that delights in all things obscure. While the film is a lot simpler in terms of theme and tone, it makes up with its ability to enchant from start to finish. Its characters may be less complex than the novel's, but they at least have a definite sense of humor. 

Spielberg has a flair for spectacle and melodrama. More importantly, he aims to please the masses and not just a certain niche, and he goes for the common denominator. He has Cline's characters go through their quest revealing artifacts that are exactly what the nostalgia-hungry moviegoers of 2018 want. They want Chucky on a stabbing spree. They want the Iron Giant battling kaiju.

Ready Player One satisfies as a treasure trove of what connects almost everyone as consumers of pop entertainment.

Butter, cheese, or barbecue

As a result of its stubborn refusal to surrender to the rigors of coming up with a faithful adaptation, Spielberg's film manages to be a silly but still top-notch adventure.

Ready Player One is popcorn entertainment that everyone can enjoy. This isn't one flavored with wasabi or some other strange taste that a select few will understand and take pleasure in. It is butter, cheese, or barbecue. It is bound to please everybody. – Rappler.com

The Cheats vocalist wrote about the loss of their daughter in a March 6 blog post. While she did not go into details, she said that she herself had been in and out of the ICU, and that her son was in critical condition.

CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom – Film stars, supermodels, comics and astronomers joined Stephen Hawking's family and friends for his funeral in Cambridge Saturday, March 31, the city where he dedicated his life's work to unravelling the mysteries of the universe.

The theoretical physicist who captured the imagination of millions around the world died on March 14 at the age of 76. (READ: Twitter lights up as the world reacts to Stephen Hawking's death)

His death triggered a flood of tributes from Queen Elizabeth II to NASA, reflecting his impact both as a scientist and for his refusal to give up in the face of crippling motor neurone disease.

Hawking was famously an atheist but his children Lucy, Robert and Tim chose the church of St Mary the Great to say their farewell.

"Our father's life and work meant many things to many people, both religious and non-religious," they said, adding that for that reason the funeral was "both inclusive and traditional, reflecting the breadth and diversity of his life".

Hundreds packed the streets and applauded when Hawking's coffin arrived, carried by 6 porters from his university college, Gonville and Caius.

White lilies representing the universe and white roses for the polar star were placed on Hawking's oak coffin.

The church bell tolled 76 times, once for each year of his life.

Legacy will live forever' 

Actor Eddie Redmayne, who played Hawking in the 2014 bio-pic The Theory of Everything, read from the Bible at the service attended by around 500 people.

Queen guitarist Brian May, model Lily Cole, comic Dara O Briain and US film producer Barbara Broccoli, known for the James Bond movies, were among the mourners.

"He inspired people with the excitement and importance of pure scientific enquiry and was admired and revered for his devotion, as a scholar, to the pursuit of knowledge," Professor Fay Dowker, a former student, told mourners.

"His influence and legacy will live forever." 

A thanksgiving service will be held at Westminster Abbey in London on June 15, when Hawking's remains will be buried near the grave of another legendary scientist, Isaac Newton.

 Visionary genius 

Among the well-wishers outside, many praised Hawking's achievement in expanding the boundaries of knowledge.

"He's made a major contribution to thinking about space, the black holes, to the whole atmosphere," lawyer Trevor Angle told Agence France-Presse.

"He has had a major rethinking influence in the way people think about science and the wider world we live in."

Professor Chris Imafidon, who consulted Hawking in 2007 about encouraging higher level mathematics students, said: "He is not just a scientist; he is an inspiration.

"He was very humble, very modest, but his thinking is far, far ahead. Too far for this generation. He sees 100 years in the future.

"That's what is painful because there's nobody that can do that now."

Mike Meylan, a New Zealand mathematics professor visiting Cambridge University, brought his children to explain Hawking's genius.

"We live in a world where so much of what's celebrated is trivial and unimportant and it will pass away," he told AFP.

"But what he contributed will last so much longer."

Robbed of mobility 

Hawking was confined to a wheelchair, almost completely paralysed and unable to speak except through his trademark voice synthesiser.

He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease aged 21 and defied predictions that he would only live for a few years, although his rare condition – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – gradually robbed him of his mobility.

But the illness did nothing to dull his mind, and Hawking became one of the world's best-known and most inspiring scientists, known for his brilliance and his wit.

His work focused on bringing together relativity – the nature of space and time – and quantum theory – how the smallest particles behave – to explain the creation of the universe and how it is governed.

But he was also a global star – his 1988 book A Brief History of Time was an unlikely worldwide bestseller, and he appeared as himself in television shows from The Simpsons to Star Trek: The Next Generation. –Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Cole Sprouse, known for his role as Jughead Jones on Riverdale, is visiting Manila on April 20.

The news was confirmed by clothing giant Bench on its social media accounts. Cole is one of the international endorsers of the brand.

MANILA, Philippines – Model and actress Isabelle Daza welcomed a baby boy over the weekend! 

In a series of Instagram stories posts, Isabelle cheekily asked followers to guess if her first child with husband Adrien Semblat would be a boy or a girl. She then posted a video showing two pink balloons that said "it's a girl." She quickly took it back as an April Fool's prank. 

Isabelle has yet to post a picture of the new baby. She did, however, post on her Instagram stories a snapshot of Moet and Chandon, some Tim Tam, candles, and a blue water bottle, with blue stuffed animals and balloons in the background.

"This baby boy is so lucky to have such loving tito's and tita's," she said, tagging actress Anne Curtis and her husband, Erwan Heussaff. 

Isabelle and Adrien announced in September 2017 that they were expecting their first child.

MANILA, Philippines – Sancho Vito delas Alas, son of comedian Ai-Ai delas Alas, is now engaged to his girlfriend, model Shana Retuya.

Sancho proposed to Shanna in Singapore.

MANILA, Philippines – You could say that my first personal encounter with the band Sandwich involved sandwiches – hamburgers from a fastfood joint, to be exact.

One of my classmates in college asked me if I wanted to earn a little extra by helping out at some event. It wasn’t a rock concert as I’d hoped, but a DJ mixing championship. I agreed to work as a production assistant for a day, nevertheless.

My favorite part of the job was welcoming the artists when they arrived and giving them food. There were quite a few acts slated to perform, and one of them was Sandwich.

I didn’t even get to enjoy the band’s short set, though; I was busy giving away sandwiches.

About a week after the event, I was surprised to find Sandwich’s road manager on campus with one of the students. He told me the production I worked for was horrible, and I agreed. One burger per starving artist was simply unacceptable. The burger wasn’t even good.

The good thing was, the road manager helped me get an internship at NU107, a radio station I avidly listened to.

That same year, while I was working as an NU107 intern, “Butterfly Carnival” won Song of the Year at the NU107 Rock Awards. Grip Stand Throw bagged the Album the Year award, while Sandwich was named Best New Artist.

Old school memories

If you’ve listened to Sandwich long enough, you were probably one of those who raised their fists in jubilation when the band won the above-mentioned awards.

You’ve heard of The Aga Muhlach Experience— Diego Castillo, Myrene Academia and Mike Dizon’s band before Eraserheads drummer Raimund Marasigan joined them to form Sandwich. You would remember that original vocalist Marc Abaya was still in college when he joined the band, and over time, soon had quite his share of screaming female fans.

You’ve chased them in bars like Mayrics, “where all the great bands are born,” according to a radio plug; at NU107 or UP Fair events; and seen them play even in unlikely places like Gotham, a Goth-inspired bar in Malate.

Years before you saw them Play For Serve in Saguijo, you’ve spent weekend nights to watch them live in Mayrics for Sunday Grabe Sunday, where bands such as Twisted Halo, Monsterbot, Pin-Up Girls, Huh, and Makiling Ensemble shared the stage.

You’ve bought or borrowed cassettes and CDs of their albums. You know what a 4-track recorder is, and that the title of Sandwich’s sophomore release is 4-Track Mind. You might have fallen in love with the song “Hairpin” the first time you listened to it.

Hearing “Jetlag,” “Two Trick Pony” and “Masilungan” got you excited.

You wrote the band name stylized, as <S>andwich at least once. You probably have that blue sticker with <S> printed on it.

You were saddened to learn that Marc Abaya was leaving, but eager to discover how the band would hold up with Raimund on the mic and Chicosci’s Mong Alcaraz playing guitar.

The band’s direction inevitably changed when Raimund became the frontman. Smash hits such as “Sugod” and “Betamax” were released, and Sandwich’s fan base expanded to include the masses. There was a different flavor to Sandwich, and people loved it.

Going on 20

Twenty years ago, Spotify, YouTube, and Facebook were non-existent and the easiest way to discover music was by listening to the radio. If you wanted to see or meet your favorite bands, you actually had to watch their gigs.

The alternative rock scene was on exploding, and major record labels were fighting over local talent.

The term “indie” was sparsely used—“underground” was the widely-accepted term for unsigned bands. Playing cassette tapes was normal and CDs were still cool. Music magazines were still very much in business.

The local music scene has changed drastically, and Sandwich has survived it all. Over the years, the band has released 8 studio albums, played possibly more than a thousand shows, and wowed millions of fans here and abroad.

Unlike that bland-tasting hamburger I offered the band members on that first meeting, a Sandwich gig still feels fresh and exciting— something that leaves you feeling satisfied afterwards.

Sandwich will be celebrating its 20th year in the music scene with an anniversary show.

Dubbed as Under the Glow of the Satellite, the concert will be held on April 13 at the Metrotent Convention Center in Pasig City.

“Shadow is overrated," Gio (James Reid), a graphic designer, tells Joanne (Nadine Lustre), a trainee at an ad agency, after being told that the titles in the poster he designed needs shadow to pop out.

Shadow is not overrated

Shadow, as proven by Antoinette Jadaone’s Never Not Love You, is in fact not overrated.

The film details the love story between Gio and Joanne, right when they first meet in the tattoo parlor Gio, a Filipino-American who makes a living out of freelance design work because he can afford to, frequents.

Joanne, who was there on an errand, is eventually egged by Gio to hitch a ride aboard his scooter so she could get back to her office and placate her demanding boss. She has ambitions driven by an obsession to make up for not graduating from a "top schools" and her parents’ financial needs. So far so good

Never Not Love You doesn't stray from the romantic film formula.

Instead, it blurs the formula, using narrative not to arrive at a predictable end but to dissect the intricacies of a contemporary relationship.

Jadaone only filters the formula of its unnecessary ornaments, leaving a film that doesn't have the exaggerated highs and lows of conventional romantic film.

The film is so meticulously threadbare, it feels like its central love story belongs not in the realms of commercial entertainment but in the real world.

Gio and Joanna’s romance elegantly avoids sparks and spectacle, and instead relies on the melancholy of quickly rushing into love only to find out that as that love matures, it reaches not a pinnacle but a plateau. Despite that, it is still profoundly beautiful.

The shadow of Jadaone’s film does not involve third parties, or sudden deaths, or grandiose familial conflicts that many romances explore for lack of imagination.

The shadow of Never Not Love You is its insistence to belong in the world of its audience. Its shadow is the absence of light, or more accurately, the absence of escapist lightness.

The film can be seen as an ode to Makati, with its characters living life and finding love in the familiar streets and districts of the city that is known not for its being romantic but for its being the center of everything mundane.

However, Jadaone makes it work. She uses her intuition for turning the nondescript to magic and crafts lovely and gentle scenes out of everyday occurrences such as a nighttime conversation over instant ramen and cola in one of Legaspi Village’s many convenience stores or crossing Buendia or breezing through Ayala’s strangely gorgeous underpass.

Everything works

Everything works, even the nagging cliché of Joanne working for an ad agency or Gio being the talented kid who doesn’t know his worth.

Gio and Joanne could have had other professions. He could have been a filmmaker, with Joanne a struggling lawyer. He could have been nurse, with Joanne an actress.

What matters is that the film was able to communicate the jarring interests and the dilemmas that can force the relationship to mature within formula structures that are easy to comprehend.

It is also essential that Never Not Love You is headlined by Reid and Lustre.

With films like Andoy Ranay’s Diary ng Panget (2014) and Nuel Naval’s This Time (2016), the romantic duo, while struggling to find distinction in a marketplace where charismatic love teams are dime a dozen, has thrived and gained sizable renown peddling romantic fantasies.

Here, they are selling the idea that everything they have peddled in their past films are fallacies, that love doesn’t end with a kiss and a ballad – it ends with looks that mix uncertainty about the future and affection gathered from the past, and then a ballad.

Surprisingly, they are even more believable here than in their other saccharine works.

Grounded romance

Never Not Love You is Jadaone’s most grounded romance.

It is subtle but the emotions it manages to evoke are loud and enduring.

There are parts that are quietly poignant, such as when Gio and Joanne have to rely on videocalls to sustain their affection with Jadaone showing exactly what they see: pixelated faces at the mercy of unreliable internet as opposed to the ordinary gloss of a commercial romance. It revels in the anxiety of young lovers, in that steady but sure turn from hasty romance to compromise.

In a way, Never Not Love You inhabits that world of uncertainty that most Filipino youth find themselves in.

Its characters navigate their way around a life where romantic aspirations and banal reality need to converge. The film appreciates more familiar and common conflict and revolves itself around that search for balance rather than the search for that fairy tale-happy ending. – Rappler.com

The most unfortunate thing about Steven S DeKnight’s Pacific Rim: Uprising is that it immediately follows Guillermo del Toro’s loving ode to his geeky obsessions and is, therefore, bound to be compared to it with hardly any favors.

Because of that, it's likely to be seen as a commercial endeavor than a work borne out of personal passions.

Robots battling monsters

Del Toro’s Pacific Rim (2013), despite its being draped in digital wizardry as most big-budgeted blockbuster of the past few decades, is fueled not by a thirst to bombard its audience with jarring sights and sounds but to celebrate the child-like fascination with heroic robots battling giant reptilian monsters – think well-loved television shows and movies from Japan.

It would be unfair to say that DeKnight’s sequel doesn’t have the same nostalgic urges as Del Toro’s film. If anything, Uprising has the frivolous feel of many of its Japanese predecessors.

Its plot, about the remnants of the previous war with kaijus haunting the next generation, feels like it was lifted out of thin air, oblivious to ordinary logic or contemporary storytelling sophistications.

Its characters are carved out of stereotypes developed from a decades-long pop culture tradition of young men and women saving the world from rubber-suited monstrosities.

Leading the pack is Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), offspring of a fallen hero who has to live his life under the majestic shadow of a father whose legacy he can never match. Then there is his sidekick, Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny), the similarly clichéd orphan with skills and talents that go beyond her age and experience.

The film also rehashes the good-natured rival (Scott Eastwood), the sexy and tomboyish girl (Adria Arjona) who gets in between the lead and the rival, and the always bewildered but genius scientist (Burn Gorman).

Nostalgic affectations

Uprising may not be as elegant in its nostalgic affectations to the genre as Del Toro’s film, but its attempt to replicate the crazed chaos of Japanese shows and movies is noteworthy.

Clearly, the film’s centerpiece is the climactic battle where the jaegers, the Neon Genesis Evangelion-inspired robots, confront the kaijus in the middle of Tokyo. In that sequence, DeKnight throws everything, resulting in an absurd but exhilarating display of soulless computer-generated spectacle and brash nostalgia coming together amidst the noise, the haphazard editing, and childish dialogue.

It is admittedly bad because nothing makes sense and yet despite that, it manages to wildly entertain.

Sure, Uprising is trash.

It is crafted mostly from clever but recycled ideas and half-baked bids to prolong a franchise’s lifespan. But there are parts of it that are glorious, especially in the way they trump Del Toro’s film in terms of unburdened fun and irreverence.

Mindless goal

Because of its mindless goal to simply entertain with clichéd heroes and villains fighting it out through their majestic robots and otherworldly monsters, Uprising is actually closer to the artifacts that Del Toro loved so much he decided to dedicate a blockbuster to it. – Rappler.com

The 23-year-old said she considers herself "fortunate" because through Eat Bulaga's "Juan For All" segment, she got to go around the country's different barangays (villages).

"I would like to take this chance to collect some stories from people I come across to every single day. Since I get to meet people in different walks of life, I was deeply inspired by how they manage to survive and be thankful even with the smallest things that they have," she added.

The project draws inspiration from "Humans of New York," a popular Facebook page run by Brandon Stanton. "My goal is to inspire more people through stories of others," Maine added.

MANILA, Philippines – After almost a decade of marriage, actor Channing Tatum and actress Jenna Dewan Tatum said they are separating. 

The two, in a joint statement to People Magazine on April 2 , said they have "lovingly chosen to separate as a couple." 

"We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now. There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision – just two best-friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible."

MANILA, Philippines – Korean boyband Super Junior will return to the music scene on April 12, to promote their repackaged album Replay

According to Metro, the promotion will only involve 6 of its members. Heechul will be unable to help promote the album due to health reasons.

Label SJ is an exclusive label established by South Korean record label SM Entertainment for Super Junior.

Label SJ also said Heechul "will participate in promotions outside of music shows normally" and that the decision "was reached with the artist’s health as the utmost priority."

Heechul has had pain in his left leg because of an injury he sustained from a car accident in 2006.

MANILA, Philippines – Dingdong Dantes and Anne Curtis are pairing up as a love team for the first time on the big screen in Sid and Aya: Not A Love Story, and the film’s new teaser trailer shows what audiences can expect from the two.

The trailer hardly gives the story away, but from what we know, Dingdong’s character, Sid, is an insomniac, and Anne’s character, Aya appears in his life.

As to what capacity, we can’t tell yet, though the trailer’s caption says, “Through many lonely nights he meets Aya. Who is she, really? And how will she change Sid’s life?”
