MANILA, Philippines – Three years after their hit film Starting Over Again, Toni Gonzaga and Piolo Pascual are set to reunite with a movie that will soon be in the works.

In an interview with ABS-CBN, Toni said that she did not expect that she and Piolo would work on another film so soon.

"I was supposed to do a different movie and then all of a sudden, everything fell accordingly. Nangyari lahat, yung mga schedule namin (Everything happened, our schedules), the script is so beautiful, it’s something that I wouldn’t want to miss,” said Toni.

No further details about the movie have been released, but Toni said that movie is very different from Starting Over Again, which is a romantic comedy.

Sobrang iba. Actually hindi mo siya puwedeng paglapitin. Magkaibang genre. Hindi ko siya mae-elaborate lahat pero I’ve never been this excited to go back to doing movies nung nabasa ko yung script,” she said.

(It's very different. Actually you can't compare them. It's a very different genre. I cannot elaborate on it that much but I've never been this excited to go back to doing movies when I read the script.)

The two were supposed to work together on a drama show called Written In Our Stars, but it was shelved after Toni got pregnant with her son Seve. Toni has since returned to work on Pinoy Big Brother and Home Sweetie Home, her show with John Lloyd Cruz.  – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Ebe Dancel, Johnoy Danao, and Bullet Dumas are here to give you the most amazing treat – a recorded version of their magical performance of Sugarfree hit “Burnout,” a key part of the soundtrack of I’m Drunk, I Love You (IDILY).

The 3 musicians give this rendition of "Burnout" a different texture and new perspectives from the original – and the differences in their voices tell various stories of love in different stages of closure.

Within just a few verses, listeners can sense weariness, longing, regret, maturity, disappointment, frustration, confusion, and hurt, running parallel to the persona’s surrender to love.

It’s one of a number of songs carefully curated for I’m Drunk, I Love You. Music is a critical element in the film. Paulo Avelino and Maja Salvador star as college best friends Dio and Carson. Both studying different fields but also playing music at gigs, the two head to La Union (with Carson’s BFF Jason Ty, played by Dominic Roco, in tow), for one last road trip before graduation. Carson struggles with her long-term feelings for Dio, who meets former flame Pathy (Jasmine Curtis-Smith) when they arrive.

Scene to scene, whether in the background or front and center, featured songs enhance each scene’s resonance and impact. As Carson and Dio circle each other, as feelings change and develop, as hellos and goodbyes are exchanged, the film moves to the rhythm of the music. And when silence must reign, the void makes all the difference.

It’s a stunning, quiet, and affecting film that Rappler movie critic Oggs Cruz points out that it "concentrates not on that gimmicks that most modern love stories veil with their empty musings about relationships, but on portraying its characters as genuinely as possible, warts and all." ([READ] 'I'm Drunk, I Love You' Review: An ode to all things intoxicating)

Kai Honasan, Ang Bandang Shirley, The Out of Body Special, and many more are featured in the film. And Paulo Avelino, Shirebound and Busking, and Juan Miguel Severo recently visited the Rappler office for a very special Valentine’s I’m Drunk, I Love You Live Jam.

MANILA, Philippines – They won't get married until 2018, but newly engaged couple Billy Crawford and Coleen Garcia already have everyone giddy with their promises to love each other.

During an appearance on Magandang Buhay on Thursday, February 23, the hosts asked the couple to recite vows to each other as if it was their wedding already.

Billy went first, saying: "To my love, I cannot wait to be maried to the love of my life, my soulmate, my best friend and boss lady. You've been there for me through thick and thin [and] not once you have left my side. And for the rest of our lives together, I will try to be the best husband, friend, and father to our future kids. I am not perfect but I will try my best to be one. I pray that God will always be there for the both of us so that we will live a holy life together 'til the end of time. I love you with all my heart," Billy said.

Coleen, on the other hand, told Billy: "Love, I can't wait for the day when we finally exchange our vows for real. I look forward to spending the rest of my life with the man of my dreams, the man of my life, my best friend. I promise to strive to be the best version of the woman you fell in love with, for the real Billy and Coleen, that we both know to be the core of this relationship. For us to never lose sight of who we are as individuals and who we are to each other.

"I promise to learn and grow for you, to be the partner that you need and deserve in time. I promise to cherish all the moments that we are blessed with and to keep God at the center of this relationship and this family. And in all the most turbulent times, I promise to hold on and fight just like we both did at the very start. We will keep fighting. And with this union, and God and our family on our side, we will keep winning. I love you and I can't wait to marry you."

During their guesting, Billy and Coleen also asked host Karla Estrada to be one of their godparents. Both Karla and Billy started their careers on That's Entertainment.

Last December, Billy proposed to Coleen in front of their family and close friends. The two then went on a vacation to Spain. (READ: How Billy Crawford proposed to Coleen Garcia)

In an interview with reporters last January, Coleen said that she and Billy have decided to wed in 2018 in order to have time to finish their respective projects.

Billy is currently hosting Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids and It's Showtime. Coleen, meanwhile, is preparing for the drama Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin starring Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson, and Jake Cuenca. – Rappler.com

Cheryl, 33, is currently dating One Direction member Liam Payne, 23, who she first met in 2008 when he auditioned for the X Factor, where she was a judge. Liam later made it through the auditions in 2010, when One Direction was formed.

Cheryl and Liam officially announced that they were dating in February 2016.

It has not been confirmed whether Cheryl is pregnant with Liam's child, but if it is his, then this will be the first child for both of them.

Cheryl was previously married twice – first to soccer player Ashley Cole and later to Jean-Bernard Ferndandez-Versini.

LOS ANGELES, USA – Pop superstar Beyonce, who is pregnant with twins, has pulled out of her headlining spot at the Coachella music festival in southern California, event organizers announced on Thursday, February 23.

The event is among the world's premier live music festivals and Beyonce's performance had been eagerly anticipated.

However, "following the advice of her doctors to keep a less rigorous schedule in the coming months, Beyonce has made the decision to forgo performing at the 2017 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival," a statement said, adding that "she will be a headliner at the 2018 festival."

It was unclear who would take the pop diva's spot at the two-weekend festival in April in Indio, California.

The superstar announced earlier this month that she and husband Jay Z are expecting twins.

The singer already has a five-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, with Jay Z.

It is unclear when she is due to give birth. – Rappler.com

'La La Land' set to win big at Oscars

Hollywood, USA – The Hollywood awards season reaches its glittering climax at the Oscars on Sunday, February 26 with La La Land, a starry-eyed love letter to the glamour of Old Hollywood, tipped for glory.

Millions of viewers around the world will tune in for Tinseltown's biggest night, with Damien Chazelle's romantic musical pinning its hopes on 14 nominations, tied with Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950) for the most ever.

"When you mention those movies, it makes my head spin even more than it's spinning. I'm a little speechless," Chazelle, 32, told trade magazine Variety when the nominations were announced in January.

With voting among the Academy's 6,000-plus members closed since Tuesday, February 21, the frenzied and at times schmaltzy campaigning that perennially marks the awards merry-go-round can no longer impact the results.

Analysts are backing La La Land, which stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as an aspiring actress and a struggling jazz musician who fall in love in Los Angeles, to win most of the awards for which it is nominated. (READ: ‘La La Land’ Review: Spectacularly and painfully beautiful)

However, it is expected to fall short of the record 11 statuettes achieved by Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic, and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003).

Gold Derby, a site that collates the awards predictions of experts and members of the public, has La La Land as a clear favorite in 10 categories, including best film, director, actress, score and song.

'Storm expected'

Stone, who has dominated the awards season, is expected to bag her first statuette despite late momentum for France's Golden Globe winner Isabelle Huppert, nominated for rape-revenge thriller Elle

"I think (Stone) will win but if she doesn't, it's because she makes it look so easy and because you don't see her putting on an accent, putting on a fake nose, all those things," Stephen Galloway, editor-in-chief of weekly trade paper The Hollywood Reporter, told Agence France-Presse.

"People like to see the acting. You don't with her. That is actually why she is so great."

Stone also faces competition from Natalie Portman (Jackie), Ruth Negga (Loving) and Meryl Streep, 67, who earned her record-breaking 20th nomination for Florence Foster Jenkins.

Gosling is expected to lose out in the best actor category, however, to Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) or Denzel Washington (Fences), who are seen as neck-and-neck in the show's closest race.

"I really don't know which way best actor will go," veteran film critic Anne Thompson, awards editor for movie blog IndieWire, told AFP.

"I keep changing my mind. And production design and costumes are also hard to call. If La La Land wins both, it gets 10. If it wins one, it gets nine."

Crews rolled out plastic sheeting on Wednesday to protect the red carpet and fan bleachers, with intermittent rain showers expected to hit Los Angeles on Sunday.

La La Land – buoyed by a record 7 Golden Globes in January – will vie for best picture with 8 films including Arrival, family drama Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight, the coming-of-age tale of an African-American in Miami.

Youngest ever

This year's nominees reflected a push by the Academy to reward diversity after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy of the past two years that prompted calls for a boycott of the annual bash.

Black actors Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris are first-time nominees for Moonlight," while Fences hopefuls Washington and his co-star Viola Davis are both old hands, with 11 nominations between them and two wins for Washington.

Also nominated is past winner Octavia Spencer, a best supporting actress candidate for Hidden Figures.

She, Davis and Harris compete against past Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (Lion) and Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea), who has been nominated three other times before this year.

For best supporting actor, Ali is leading the betting ahead of Dev Patel (Lion), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) and Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea).

In the directing category, Mel Gibson's surprise nomination for the critically acclaimed WWII biopic Hacksaw Ridge marks his comeback a decade after being ostracized by Hollywood for an anti-Semitic tirade.

Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) and Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester) are also in the running, but Chazelle is expected to go one better than his losing nomination in 2015 for writing Whiplash, to become the youngest best director winner ever.

Televised live by ABC and shown around the world, the 89th Academy Awards will be held at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre, and hosted by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. – Rappler.com

'Hidden Figures' Review: Uplifting crowd-pleaser

$

Theodore Melfi’s Hidden Figures is a crowd-pleaser, through and through.

Fine ensemble

Set during the era when the US is desperately trying to win the Space Race but is straddled by racial intolerance, Hidden Figures features three 3 African-American NASA mathematicians who contributed to the success of the American space program.

Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) performs the role of supervisor for all "colored computers," but is not officially given the title, because no African-American has ever been given such a high position in a government office.

Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) is an assistant to the space agency’s main engineer. She dreams of becoming the first female African-American engineer but she needs to take courses from an all-white high school to be admitted to engineering college.

The film spends the most time with Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), portrayed in the introduction as a math genius from childhood. She is transferred to the main think tank where NASA director Al Harrison (Kevin Costner), pressured by the government to deliver an equation for the safety of the first astronaut on space, quickly takes notice of her gift and uses it to win the race.

The film’s greatest asset is its ensemble. In an ensemble composed of very fine thespians, it is Henson who shines the brightest. She portrays Johnson with ample vulnerability and determination. She effortlessly turns quiet situations into indelible moments that mark the film.

{source} <iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9pZZbkf8wcU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

That exactly is the biggest problem of the film – it is great only in parts, but the path towards those great parts isn’t very spectacular.

The problem of being a period piece

What is most interesting about Hidden Figures is how it has been clearly crafted to showcase the stark differences between now and then. It mines humor out of things from the past that are ludicrous now: segregated comfort rooms that would have Johnson scuttle out of the office with folders in hand just to relieve herself half a mile away, or random comments that seemingly take serious matters lightly.

Melfi, of course, doesn’t keep things within the realm of humor. He has the ability to effortlessly harvest grand melodrama out of small comedic situations, turning the running gag of Johnson’s efforts to go to the bathroom into a stark acting piece where humor melts to reveal passion.

Without taking away its noble intention of putting these personalities who struggled on a pedestal, Hidden Figurescan be described as the cinematic equivalent of a self-congratulatory pat on the back.

In its effort to depict the past as a period where injustices were the norm and minorities were required to be brave and heroic out of sheer necessity, it implies that the present is a period where ills have been cured. The film offers no caveats. It is too eager to celebrate progress that it neglects the fact that there are still pressing issues.

The question persists: how relevant is such a vigorously joyous film like Hidden Figures in a time where everything it celebrates is dissipating by sheer reversal of culture?

Good-natured and uplifting

Hidden Figures is unabashedly good-natured and uplifting. But it is pleasing to the point of making it feel like it is oblivious of the fact that the dark heart its intrepid protagonists are up against is still subtly beating to this day. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – It's the end of an era! Patrick Stewart will no longer play Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Patrick made the announcement at a SiriusXM Town Hall, where he appeared with Logan director James Mangold and co-star Hugh Jackman.

Logan, the upcoming X-Men movie about Logan (aka Wolverine) that's set in a post-apocalypic world with no mutants, is also Hugh's last X-Men film.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Div0iP65aZo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

At the Town Hall, Patrick recalled watching the movie in Berlin with James and Hugh, and getting emotional about it.

"Maybe it was the company of these two guys, but the movie ended and — this is an admission — but at one point [Hugh] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this, and then I realized I had just done the same thing," he said.

In the few minutes before he and Hugh got up to make a speech, Patrick said he came to the realization that he was done with the series.

"So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.'"

Patrick has played Professor Xavier in 7 of the X-Men movies, including Logan, and has been with the franchise since 2000. Hugh, on the other hand, has been in 9 of the movies since 2000.

Logan will open in Philippine theaters on March 1. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe Canada 2016 Siera Bearchell is back in Manila!

The beauty queen and body positivity advocate is here to bring the popular Canadian cafe Tim Hortons to the Philippines. (READ: First Tim Hortons in PH: Photos, price points, what to expect)

Siera spoke to the press at the ribbon cutting ceremony for Tim Hortons on Friday, February 24, at Uptown Place Mall, and said that she'll be flying out on Tuesday, February 28.

With her at the ceremony were Department of Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo, the executives of TH Coffee Services Philippines Corporation, and Tim Hortons President Elias Diaz Sese.

She also hinted at visiting the Philippines again soon when asked about her plans for after Miss Universe. "Here I am in the Philippines, at the opening of Tim Hortons, so I'm bringing Canada to the Philippines, and then when I go back to Cananda, I'm gonna do some really cool stuff there," she said. "And then hopefully I'll be back in the Philippines. Yeah, already, plans are on the way."

Siera was last in the Philippines in January to compete in the Miss Universe 2016 pageant, where she finished in the Top 9. Like many of the candidates, she has quite a few Filipino fans.

When asked if she was interested in going into showbiz, either here or abroad, she answered: "We'll see. I'm open to opportunities, but I'm a law student, so I'll finish my law degree, but I'm always open to all opportunities."

According to the Miss Universe Canada website, Siera is currently taking up law at the University of Saskatchewan.

On promoting her advocacy, a healthy body image, to the youth, Siera spoke about confidence: "I'm always promoting being confident with who you are. Being confident in your own skin. Because we live in a world that profits off our insecurities and tries us to have us be something that we're not. So being comfortable with who we are is so important."

She recently opened up to Elle about her struggle with body image and being a beauty queen, having been told when she first tried for Miss Universe Canada in 2013 that she had a better chance of winning if she lost weight.

She told Elle: "When I look back I think I was basing my self-worth and validation and self-confidence based on trying to be this image of what someone was telling me to be. I was finally able to accept this is who I am, this is okay, and our bodies change, that is okay. I am so fortunate that I was able to see that at 26 years old rather than living my whole life still not being happy."

The Tim Hortons branch in Manila is the first to open in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia. It will open on February 28 at the ground floor of Uptown Place Mall, 36th Street, corner 9th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City. – Rappler.com

'Rings' Review: A tedious and monotonous rehash

Note: This review discusses plot points from Rings.

It should have a required more than just a nagging need to squeeze that final cent out of a franchise to force a revival from a hiatus of more than 10 years, yet predictable Hollywood, with its penchant to expose most of the symptoms of creative bankruptcy, has just done it again.

{source}<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uukQ_6szDm8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Saving Samara

F. Javier Gutierrez’s Rings is sort of a sequel to Gore Verbinski’s The Ring (2002) and Hideo Nakata’s The Ring Two, a duo of films that saw themselves as unneccessary revamps of Nakata’s own cult classic Ringu (1998) to suit Western audiences.

If anything, the two films are interesting experiments, considering that they mostly adopted the mythos of the vengeful spirit they named Samara, who murders the unfortunate viewers of a cursed videotape. They emphasized on building it up as a ghost story with clear villains and victims rather than an enigmatic modern parable. The American remakes clearly understood its market, focusing not on the scope of its horror but on the characters they concentrated on.

As a result, Samara became something of an icon, winning a number of copycats and parodies. Fame however is a fickle thing, and without a truly memorable film to carry it, the character is bound for obscurity in a landscape that is quickly being populated by evil dolls, demons, and other unspeakable horrors.

Photo courtesy of United International Pictures

Rings feels like that last ditch effort to rescue the infamous character out of obsolescence. It is just unfortunate that the film reeks of desperation, with all its shoddy attempts to scare using a character that has lost its luster and intrigue from overexposure a long time ago.

Wasted promise

It almost seemed like Rings would take Samara’s tale into a different direction, one that promises to be markedly and thematically distinct from the two previous filmns.

Early in the movie, college student Holt (Alex Roe) tells his girlfriend Julia (Matilda Lutz) the story of Orpheus, how the Greek hero tried to save his lady love from the underworld. Julia then made a comment as to why it is always the man who rescues the girl. As it turns out, she will be put in a position where she rescues her boyfriend from certain death when she willingly watches the cursed video.

Photo courtesy of United International Pictures

How Holt came in possession of Samara’s infamous video is a narrative thread worth exploring which the movie manages to discard in favor of less remarkable twists and turns. It all started when Gabriel (Johnny Galecki), Holt’s professor, discovered the video and thought it would be a good idea to recruit his careless and curious students to sacrifice themselves to further his investigation on the existence of the soul.

Rings could have been that thoroughly bizarre hodgepodge of horror and sci-fi that attempts to touch on existential musings. Unfortunately, Gutierrez and his studio executives prefer the safer route of having its main characters drive their way to another sleepy town in the middle of nowhere, full of suspicious inhabitants, to fulfill the requirement of needlessly expanding the lore behind poor, overused Samara.

Riskless montony

As a result, Rings feels like a sorry repetition, one that fails to match the consistency of mood and atmosphere of Verbinski and Nakata’s movies but staggers on by sheer virtue of convention.

Samara isn’t the biggest evil here. It is Hollywood’s preference for riskless monotony, that horrible vice that has sucked most of the horror out of this horror franchise, turning it into just a routine series of jump scares, creaky noises, illogical protagonists, and other things that we’ve all seen before and we’ve all grown bored of. – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA – Coming of age story Moonlight triumphed Saturday, February 25 at the Spirit Awards, the latest in a string of honors it has picked up with the Oscars just one day away.

Starring Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris, Barry Jenkins's movie tells the life story of a young African American struggling to find his place as he grows up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.

The movie took best film as well as best director for Barry Jenkins and best screenplay, cinematography and editing. The movie was also awarded the Robert Altman Award.

"This one is tough. There are so many amazing directors in the category," said Jenkins, who beat Andrea Arnold (American Honey), Pablo Larrain (Jackie), Jeff Nichols (Loving) and Kelly Reichardt (Certain People) to the prestigious directing award.

The filmmaker, who co-wrote Moonlight, pointed out that it was made in the sweltering Florida heat for just $1.5 million, paying tribute to his crew for their perseverance.

Best actor went to Casey Affleck, whose acclaimed performance as a loner with a dark past in Manchester by the Sea has seen him win numerous awards.

"The policies of this administration are abhorrent and will not last. They are un-American," he said on a night of speeches marked by ridicule of or contempt for President Donald Trump.

"I know this feels preachy and I'm preaching to the choir out here."

Best actress went to Isabelle Huppert, the French star of Paul Verhoeven's rape-revenge drama Elle who is tipped to mount the most serious challenge to runaway favorite Emma Stone (La La Land) at the Oscars.

"It is independence that makes art win," the French actress said in her acceptance speech, later adding backstage: "You can rebel through art. That's what I like about art."

‘Hacksaw Ridge’ Review: Violence over virtues

BLOOMING ROMANCE. Andrew Garfield and Teresa Palmer, in a scene from the movie 'Hacksaw Ridge,' directed by Mel Gibson. Photo courtesy of Walt Disney

Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge is a seemingly uncomplicated war movie, one that applauds the valor of the unlikeliest of war heroes.

Charm and crafty machinations

Gibson opening his film with images of stark devastation before plunging into an exhaustive exploration of how Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) turned out to be the peculiar soldier whose conscience prevents him from committing acts of violence. There is nothing awfully complex here. Hacksaw Ridge simplifies Desmond’s life into a series of traumas and events that would eventually shape him and seal his fate.

The first half of Hacksaw Ridgereeks of mush and pleasantries. Right after forcing the point that Desmond’s non-violence may have been a result of a childhood accident where he nearly killed his brother, the film mellows and focuses on his terse but rather tepid love story with a pretty nurse (Teresa Palmer). Even the prolonged scenes of Desmond suffering through training camp are replete with gaudy sentiment, with Gibson briefly characterizing Desmond’s military mates with the help of boorish humor.

For sure, it all makes cinematic and narrative sense.

Gibson has already prepared his audience for brutality with the initial display of bodies burning, limbs exploding, and Desmond facing danger. In fact, Hacksaw Ridge is bookended by extravagant battle, with the melodramatic middle seems to be there just as an attempt to humanize the excessive body count. The distinct contrast between the excessive violence and the inconsequential romance and camaraderie makes for good drama.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/s2-1hz1juBI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Skewed worldview

It is very easy to fall for the film’s immediate charms and its crafty machinations. There is nothing wrong in getting drawn into its spell and schemes, in simply taking the film as a document of how one man was able to make his mark in a field where he and his staunch allegiance to his beliefs clearly doesn’t belong.

What is troubling about Hacksaw Ridgeare the details that reveal Gibson as a filmmaker with rather skewed worldview, one that is adamantly sadistic notwithstanding its trust in faith and religion.

While Gibson extols the richness of Desmond’s soul, it revels in reducing the rest of humanity as props to whatever cause he deems is more important. The film is littered with depictions of bodies bereft of poise and grace, turned into buffet tables for hungry rats or makeshift shields from random bullets and explosions. Its depiction of the Japanese as villainous and whose culture of honor over life as unsound echoes dangerous prejudice.

Pit the film’s very cruel images of undignified humanity that the film flaunts with the embarrassingly mawkish ones where Desmond is either washing the blood and gore from his body or is carried from the battleground as if he was being lifted from the world by an army of angels and you’ll have a picture of darker tendencies.

MANILA, Philippines –  Mahershala Ali took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Moonlight at the 2017 Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26 (February 27 in Manila).

Last year's Best Supporting Actress winner Alicia Vikander announced the victor in the category, and many actors gave Mahershala a standing ovation when his name was announced.

Moonlight follows the story of Chiron throughout his troubled youth up to his tumultuous adulthood. Chiron must deal with emotional scars from his drug-addicted mother, while facing betrayals from friends, bullying from schoolmates, and coming to terms with his sexuality. The film is based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney.

Mahershala Ali played Juan, whom the young protagonist Chiron encounters early in his youth. Juan teaches Chiron a powerful lesson about friendship and disappointment.

Ali's indelible performance was singled out by critics as especially affecting and impactful.

In his accpetance speech, Mahershala said: "I wanna thank my teachers, my professors... so many wonderful teachers. One thing that they consistently told me… was that it wasn’t about you, it’s not about you, it’s about the characters. You’re in service to these stories, these characters… it’s about Juan, it’s about Chiron, it’s about Paula. Cast and crew, it was such a wonderful experience… I have so many people to thank who have gotten me here… any one of them [the cast] could be up here now holding this trophy."

He also thanked his wife, who just had a daughter 4 days ago and was on her 3rd trimester during awards season. "I just wanna thank her for being such a soldier through this process," said Mahershala.

Mahershala beat Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Dev Patel (Lion) and Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea). – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA (UPDATED) – Hollywood actor Bill Paxton, best known for his roles in such blockbusters as Apollo 13 and Titanic, has died at the age of 61, a family representative said Sunday, February 26.

The versatile Texas-born actor was a familiar face on US movie screens, with a string of memorable credits to his name from a career spanning several decades.

"It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery," said a statement from a family representative.

One of Paxton's earliest character roles was as a thug in the 1984 The Terminator, and he left a mark as the ill-fated Private Hudson in the 1986 sci-fi thriller Aliens.

Paxton played the part of Fred Haise, one of the astronauts of the Apollo 13 lunar mission in the 1995 drama of the same name, while in the 1997 Titanic he was the treasure hunter who led an obsessive search for the sunken ship.

"A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning 4 decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker," the family statement said.

"Bill's passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family's wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – At the 2017 Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, February 26 (February 27 in Manila), Viola Davis took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Fences.

Fences is directed by Denzel Washington, who also stars, and is based on the play by the late writer August Wilson. In the film, Denzel plays Troy Maxson, who juggles tense relationships with his wife Rose (Viola Davis), his brother, and his son. Struggling with coming to terms with failures in his past, he battles his demons in the present, and the impact of his actions ripples onto the lives of those nearest and dearest to him.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jj-ZYPVRQbc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Last year’s Best Supporting Actor winner Mark Rylance presented this year’s victor, praising women as being better able to “oppose without hatred.”

This is Viola's first Oscar and 3rd nomination.

During her acceptance speech, Viola said: "You know there’s one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered – one place, and that’s the graveyard. People ask me all the time, ‘what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola?’ And I say, exhume those bodies. Exhume those stories. The stories of people who dreamed big and never saw those dreams to fruition, people who fell in love and lost.

I became an artist and thank God I did because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life. So here’s to August Wilson who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people."

Justin entered the Dolby Theatre on Sunday, February 26 (Monday, February 27 in Manila) singing and dancing as his dancers, hidden among the audience, joined him from the aisles.

The audience, including Justin's wife Jessica Biel, was on their feet and dancing to his hit feel-good song.

"Can't Stop the Feeling" is nominated for Best Original Song in the 2017 Oscars. It was the theme song of the movie Trolls.
