MOVING ON. Diego Loyzaga says he loves his dad Cesar Montano amid the rift between them, after he blasted Cesar on social media. File photo by Rob Reyes/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – More than a week since his rants against his father Cesar Montano on social media, actor Diego Loyzaga explained his side and why he vented his frustration.

In an interview with Pep, Diego said he did the drug tests to prove that he was not using drugs, to show his father he was clean and that he was okay.

Klinaro ko for the sake of me backing up what I said in my statement na hiningan na ako nun. (I clarified everything for the sake of me backing up what I said, when I was asked about it before.)

“It wasn’t for anybody else, para wala nang masabi (so there's nothing that can be said),” he said.

When asked if he was angry with his father and was willing to talk with him about the issue, Diego said:

Hindi, mahal ko ang tatay ko. (No, I really love my dad)

“Mahal na mahal ko ang tatay ko (I really, really love my dad),” he said, adding that he's been asking to talk with his dad properly for many years.

Despite the rift between him and Cesar, Diego said he's grateful for the support of his management Star Magic, his friends and most of all his mom, actress Teresa Loyzaga.

In a separate interview, Teresa said she's hopeful that her son will settle the issue with Cesar at the right time.

Diego also thanked his former stepmom Sunshine Cruz and sisters for being there for him. (READ: Sunshine Cruz says she's there for Diego Loyzaga amid rift with Cesar Montano)

"Kay Tita Sunshine, wala akong masasabi talaga. (With Tita Sunshine, I really have nothing to say)

“My Tita and I have been through a lot since the years that we've known each other.

“I’m happy sa statement na nilabas niya (she came out with).

Masaya ako na nasabi niya ang mga bagay na yun," he said. (I'm happy with the kinds words she said.)

Diego continued. “You know what, it’s an emotional thing na they’re my half sisters and there’s only so much time I got to see them.

“But when I do have the time, gumagawa ako talaga ako ng oras at paraan para kitain ko sila. (I find time and ways to see all of them.)

“To see that they supported me after mga nangyari, touching talaga yun na nakita ko kahit half sisters ko sila.

“Dugo e, family.” (To see that they supported me after everything that has happened, it's very touching because they're my half sisters. It's blood.)

In the end, Diego thanked all his supporters for being with him and the messages they've given him on social media.

“It’s sad na kailangan pang may mangyari na ganito para ma-realize mo ang mga bagay na ito, pero there’s always a silver lining sa mga nangyari and I guess this is it.

(it's sad that things like this have to happen for you to realize it, but there's always a silver lining to what happens and I guess this is it.)

“Like my Mom said, I think we should just move from that, and we’re all just looking for a better future, a better tomorrow.

“We’re all just just hoping na gumanda ang lahat (everything will be good),” he said.

Previously, Diego critcized his father on social media, saying that Cesar allegedly asked him to leave the house he gave him, and that Cesar accused him of being a drug addict. The posts have since been deleted.

Cesar for his part said that he was merely concerned about his son, saying he only wanted the best for him.– Rappler.com

In a series of tweets, GoodVybes responded to Michael's claims, saying that they had already paid Passion Pit's management: "We would like to clarify we have paid the talent fees and airfare for [Passion Pit] and that if there are any pending, we would be glad to resolve directly with the [Passion Pit's] handlers. In an interview with Bandwagon, Nico Bacani, president of Vybe Productions, said that it was unfair of Michael to make the statement that he did, since he did not say whether he was referring to GoodVybes or to his agency.

He added that Vybe was originally supposed to provide a rehearsal tent, the cost of which would be deducted from Passion Pit's fees. Because Passion Pit was unable to use the tent, his agency and Vybe decided not to deduct the tent's cost anymore. Nico said that the tent's cost – 16% of the total – may be what Michael was talking about.

Meanwhile, Passion Pit responded to GoodVybes statement via Twitter. He wrote:

"See, I've got this thing: to fly around the world to play one show, it's a big deal! Kinda messes with my brain a bit, my doctors advise against [it]. But when you have a bunch of fans someplace and there's money there so you can afford it, you make it work. Cool, so we do that. Then a bunch of things happen, which I won't go into, but I'll say that, you know, festivals can be dangerous. You have to know your shit.

"Anyway, we play. We're still alive. And we go home. This is when, usually, artists already get paid. We hadn't they were still settling. Festivals cost a lot of money. I have a lot of respect for people who run festivals. So long as they pay, you know, within a year. That's it.

"Anyway, I just commented on a tweet that reminded me of a show that I'm still waiting to get paid for. I've got bills to pay, too! Oh well."

BELLE. Emma Watson sings the famous first song from 'Beauty and the Beast' in a new clip released by Disney. Screengrab from YouTube/Disney Movie Trailers

MANILA, Philippines – Disney has released a brand new clip from the Beauty and the Beast live-action movie!

In the 1-minute scene, Emma Watson as Belle walks through the village as she and townsfolk sing the classic "Belle." As she explains to a Monsieur Jean, she's off to return a book "about two lovers in fair Verona."

"Belle" is the first song in the animated movie, with its eponymous character singing about wanting to get out of the provincial town she lives in and the townsfolk finding her strange.

Though it isn't seen in the video above, the song also introduces Gaston and his plans to marry Belle.

This isn't the first time Emma's voice was featured in a trailer for Beauty and the Beast. She could be heard singing "Belle" in a TV spot for the Golden Globes too, and a snippet of her singing "Something There" was released by Disney in December 2016.

Beauty and the Beast will be in Philippine theaters on March 16.– Rappler.com

Drake says Grammys pigeon-holed him as black artist

STEREOTYPE. Singer Drake says the people behind the Grammys have typecast him as black artist. Screengrab from Instagram/@champagnepapi

NEW YORK, USA – Drake, the world's top-selling artist last year, has accused the Grammys of pigeonholing him as a rapper because he is black and said he does not want his latest awards.

Drake, who won the Grammys for Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance for "Hotline Bling" at the music industry's February 12 gala, voiced dismay that his "One Dance," which is Spotify's all-time, most-streamed song, was passed over for nominations. (FULL LIST: Winners, Grammys 2017)

For the Grammys, "I'm a black artist, I'm apparently a rapper, even though 'Hotline Bling' is not a rap song," Drake, who rarely gives interviews, said on his weekend show on Apple's Beats 1 radio.

"The only category that they can manage to fit me in is in a rap category, maybe because I've rapped in the past or because I'm black," he said in the form of an interview with Britain's DJ Semtex.

The Toronto artist, who rose to fame in the hip-hop world, said that his megahits were "pop songs – but I never get any credit for that."

"I want to be like Michael Jackson; I want to be like artists that I looked up to," he said.

"I won two awards but I don't even want them because it feels weird to me," said Drake, who did not attend the Grammys event in Los Angeles, in part because he was touring Europe.

Drake – who according to the global recording industry body IFPI sold more than any other act last year – was also in contention for the most prestigious Album of the Year Grammy for "Views."

The award went to white English ballad singer Adele's blockbuster 25 and not the other favorite, black artist Beyonce's edgy Lemonade. It was the third time Beyonce was nominated and passed over for the prize, renewing charges in some circles that the awards have a racial bias.

Drake, who is of mixed ancestry and also is Jewish, voiced pride in being raised in the "cultural mosaic" of Toronto and said he never felt like an outsider until spending time in the United States.

"The first time I really experienced it was when I got famous and went to America," he said.

"People would challenge me, like I don't understand how it works, or like, 'You're Canadian, you'll never understand the black American struggle.'"

Drake has rarely been political but recently made headlines when he staunchly attacked US President Donald Trump's anti-immigration policies from a London stage. – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA – Angelina Jolie had warm words for her estranged husband Brad Pitt and is optimistic about the future of their family, the Hollywood star said in an interview Tuesday, February 21.

Jolie and Pitt, once Hollywood's most celebrated couple known as "Brangelina," are in the midst of a high-profile divorce and last month reached an agreement to keep private the details of their split and battle over custody of their six children.

"We are focusing on the health of our family," Jolie said on ABC's Good Morning America

"We will be stronger when we come out of this because that's what we're determined to do as a family."

The actress was asked if she still thought of Pitt as a wonderful father, which is how she had described him in the past.

"Of course. Of course. We will always be a family. Always."

Jolie, 41, filed for divorce in September, citing irreconcilable differences. She accused Pitt of hitting their teenage son on a flight that month from France to Los Angeles, sparking tabloid gossip and an FBI probe.

Pitt, 53, was later cleared by both the FBI and social workers.

Jolie is seeking sole custody of their six children, while Pitt wants joint legal and physical custody.

The A-listers got married in France in August two years ago, but had been a couple since 2004.

RESTRAINING ORDER. A Los Angeles court grants the request of model Karrueche Tran for Chris Brown to stay away from her. Scfreengrab from Instagram/@chrisbrownofficial

LOS ANGELES, USA – Troubled singer Chris Brown has been ordered to stay away from an ex-girlfriend, model Karrueche Tran, after she said he punched her and threatened to kill her.

In documents made public Tuesday, February 22, a Los Angeles court granted a restraining order requested by Tran, with Brown facing arrest if he comes near her.

Tran, who has had an on-off relationship with Brown, said that he punched her in the stomach and pushed her down the stairs several years ago but that she did not call the police.

The model, who has also appeared in television series, said she requested the restraining order as Brown had recently sent her threats by text message.

"He told a few people that he was going to kill me. He said if no one else can have me, he's gonna 'take me out,'" she wrote.

Brown, who rose to fame at a young age with his R&B voice and later rap, has become notorious for allegations of abuse.

He was convicted of beating superstar Rihanna, then his girlfriend, before the 2009 Grammy Awards, forcing the pop singer to miss the music industry's annual gala.

Last year, he was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a standoff with police.

A woman had called for assistance in that incident, but Brown's lawyers insisted she had set him up amid a feud. – Rappler.com

I’m sitting at my computer when a text comes in, asking if I can cover the Moffatts concert here in Manila. Of course I responded with a yes, after all, I’ll photograph virtually any genre of music even if I’m far from a bubblegum-pop kinda guy. The images themselves are interesting to me, regardless if I’m fond of the musical genre or not.

Well, let me inform you that I was pleasantly surprised with the performance here, which was far from the stereotypical image you may conjure up with images of '90s boy bands popping into your head. This was a concert with a deeper feel to it, with more of a rock edge. Sure they were singing teen pop songs from over 15 years ago, but now executed with a mature sound, at least in comparison to when they where originally recorded.

There was more of a sense of an indie rock feel with guitar driven melodies, dreamy harmonies and thoughtful lyrics, high energy and a somewhat familiar, welcoming sound.

In case you’re out of the loop with the background of this international boy-band sensation called The Moffatts, perhaps a short bio is in order. They are a musical group of four brothers hailing from Canada. Three of them performed here in Manila last Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Composed of Bob, Clint, Dave and Scott Moffatt, interestingly, Bob and Clint are identical twins and Dave is the fraternal triplet.

They began their careers at an early age, performing country music in the early '90s, while still in their pre-teens. Towards the end of the decade they made the leap to a new chapter of their lives, embarking on a varied path of performing pop rock music.

With an unusual amount of experience under their belts, they took advantage of their skills and made a successful transition to international stardom with numerous chart topping hits, including “Crazy,” “Misery,” “Girl of My Dreams,” and “Bang Bang Boom,” while I was even aware of the song, “I’ll Be There For You” which garnerned heavy radio rotation and can still be heard aired today.

They progressed from teen pop idols to an edgier rock sound working with producer Bob Rock, who rose to fame working with Bon Jovi and Metallica. Their music had an expansive exposure, often being utilized in movies and television, with high profile guest appearances on Disney to All-Star baseball games, numerous accolades and awards. It was a meteoric rise to fame, indeed.

iRocktography: See what music looks like...

As with all boy bands, they eventually went their own separate ways with Scott embarking on a solo career in Canada, Clint and Bob based in Nashville, performing as a group, recently releasing a new EP under the name Endless Summer, with the debut single "Amen For Women" and finally Dave embarking on a career as a yoga instructor.

Every generation has its own version of the boy band. What happens though, so often with a long list of these bands, and generally rather quickly as far as musical lifespans go, is they fall into oblivion, the love affair soon comes to an inauspicious end.

It's for a couple of reasons – first off, the young listeners themselves outgrow their adolescent affection, the fondness fades and they move on to other things, in music and in life. As you grow older you have a greater appreciation of music and notice other things, maybe becoming discouraged if you hear stories about how your favorite band were marketing fabrications, or if you're disappointed to find out they didn’t write their own songs or simply sang along at concerts over backing vocals or sometimes didn’t sing at all, and lip synced their way to fame.

Also the members of the band themselves get burned out, with a hectic tour schedule repeating the monotony of performing the same songs over and over again, along with a high demand on their time, which creates no personal life to speak of. And the artists themselves veer off in other directions to find their own path, basically venturing out to do their own thing.

But The Moffatts, this family rooted, gifted group of musicians, are great. These young men are super talented and it was obvious with an outstanding show; folks in attendance experienced a treat during the Manila leg of their farewell tour.

What impressed me here was the vocal harmony itself. There’s nothing like siblings performing together, whose voices blend like nothing else on earth, something special about the genetic link I suppose, unmatched compared to anything else. There's that special connection you find between brothers, never mind what could be said about the mind-boggling bond between twins or triplets. You could real feel and see the connection between them as they sang.

Now with a more of a sophisticated sound, something that has developed from elementary stages in their musical life, these guys toured all around over the globe, all before the tender young age of 18, when most bands are just embarking on their journey. They enjoyed a high popularity in Europe and were a big hit in the Southeast Asian markets, charting in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and of course the Philippines.

Back in the day their concerts here were a huge deal, making headlines in every lifestyle section of various media outlets at the time.

The set list had a smooth flow to it. The show started off with the boys being introduced by a man in a cowboy hat and all dressed in red with some humorous banter and couple of country songs, an icebreaker that warmed up the crowd in fine fashion.

We of course come to find out it was their manager/father Frank Moffat, best-selling author, motivational speaker, and lifestyle coach, who is no stranger to the music business himself. After Frank was through, they took the stage in confident fashion, then moved to a segment with Scott performing a few of his solo tracks, while the others took a break. He skillfully incorporated a layered sound with use of his laptop and keyboards in a looping fashion, all while performing with the electric guitar.

They also had a female guest singing with them on one of the tracks, the stunning Rachel Peters. She explained to the crowd it was her first time to perform onstage, but she held her own.

One of the highlights of the show was when the crowd held up their cell phones with the lights on, swaying to the beat of the song, maybe a bit cliche but it still worked well here. This was followed by a few more of their hits and an acoustic section of the show. Bob on drums for much of the night then headed to to the front of the stage with each of his brothers on acoustic guitars.

While mixing in some hits along with lesser known tracks, then progressing to a portion of the show where Bob and Clint took their turn center stage as Scott took a short break. They handled the crowd with the skill of performers beyond their years, smoothly transitioning from various portions of the show to the next, including the typical, yet entertaining stunt of pitting the right side of the venue against the left, singing a well known chorus. And to keep up with modern times, recording one of the tracks on their cell phone with a Facebook live feed.

What impressed me here though, was not so much their onstage presence which was amazing in itself but their behavior and demeanor off the stage that was inspiring.  They were friendly, polite, easygoing and kind to everyone they met. For a week before the concert, they made the media rounds, with the skill and grace you’d expect from a group of professionals that have been around for decades.

They appeared on several TV shows, radio stations and even a special live performance here on Rappler LiveJam, which was impressive, check it out if you have a some time.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cqkkXfStOuI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

There are situations when media junkets such as this can become redundant, exhausting and hectic with the artists losing interest. Not so with these guys, they were attentive, upbeat, interactive and having fun with every single appearance. They even had a special soundcheck party with a meet and greet before the show and took individual photos with fans in attendance, which took nearly two hours.

Very rarely do you see any band, of any caliber, invest that much time to conduct a M&G with that many people. Basically it rarely happens, usually 50 to 100 people for 20 to 30 minutes or so, and that’s it, this provides an insight to the bands humble and appreciative stance.

As evident in the enthusiastic crowd, it’s easy to see why the love for this matched band hasn’t waned. As they say, you never forget your first love and tonight was full of nostalgia as folks drifted back to thoughts of posters on the bedroom walls, listening to your favorite band over the radio. And is wasn’t only the fans who were fired up, but the Moffatt brothers were too. You could see it in their faces and hear it in their voices.

It was just as much of a joyous and memorable experience for the band as it was for the near capacity crowd. It was refreshing to see them functioning on stage as one, rather than it feeling like a competition with each member vying to prove they’re worth more than the other guy. A connection on many levels simultaneously not often experienced at live events, well done. Keep an eye out for their individual career paths, I’d expect to see more good things to come. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Actress Sofia Andres came to the defense of her friend and onscreen partner Diego Loyzaga, after his rift with his father Cesar Montano. Diego blasted Cesar on social media early in February for allegedly accusing him of using drugs and throwing him out of the house.

In an interview with reporters at the press conference for the movie Pwera Usog on Tuesday, February 21, Sofia said it was not true that Diego was using drugs, since both of them underwent a drug test.

Diego previously posted a photo of his drug test results on social media. Last year, he also took a drug test together with other stars. (READ: Stars on negative drug test results)

"No, no, [it's not true]" she said. "Actually, I have no idea. Sabay po kami ni Diego nag-drug test. And kaya ko po patunayan na negative. Opo, alam po iyan ng Star Magic," she said, referring to their talent management group.

(No, no, [it's not true]. Diego and I took the drug test together. And I can prove it's negative. Yes, Star Magic knows it.)

Meanwhile, Sofia said that she was aware of Diego's issues with his dad prior to his rants on social media. She even talked to him about it after the issue came out.

"After that, I talked to him. We talked about it na magiging maayos din ang lahat (that everything will be fine)," she said.

When asked how Diego has been doing since the issue, Sofia said: "He’s better now. Siyempre yung mga mahal niya sa buhay, sinusuportahan siya kahit anong mangyari. (Of course his loved ones are supporting him no matter what.)

"Hindi naman po namin siya pinababayaan." (We're not neglecting him.)

She also said that she's always by Diego's side to support him.

"Sabi ko sa kanya na nandito lang ako for him. I’m always ready to listen. Nandito ako para intindihin kung ano lahat ang kinikimkim niya, yung mga galit niya. And I’m always here to pray na sana maayos na lahat," she said.

(I told him that I'm always here for him. I'm always ready to listen. I'm just here to understand what's he's going through, his anger. And I'm always here to pray that everything will be fine.)

In an interview with Pep, Diego said that despite the conflict with his dad, he still underwent the drug test to prove that he was clean and that he was okay. He also said that he loves his dad very much. (READ: Diego Loyzaga on conflict with dad Cesar Montano)

His former stepmom Sunshine Cruz and his half-sisters have also expressed support for him. Cesar, on the other hand, told his publicist that he just wanted the best for Diego.– Rappler.com

"Ayala malls is well-known to support the arts in any kind of platform. I used to watch a lot of indie films at [Greenbelt] cinemas. Anong nangyari? (What happened?)" he asked.

Maja appealed to cinemas to give them a chance, employing some of the film's humor by referencing the John Lloyd Cruz-Bea Alonzo film A Second Chance.

"Kung si Popoy at Basha may second chance. Bakit di niyo kami kayang bigyan ng second week sa sinehan? #SaveIDILY."

In another tweet, Maja made use of Liza Soberano's famous line in the film My Ex and Whys, which opened the same time as I'm Drunk I Love You.

The movie's director JP Habac posted a message on Facebook about the matter. In his post, he asked if Philippine movies should be recognized abroad first before they can be shown in the country.

"Ganun na ba talaga ang kapalaran ng mga baguhang gustong gumawa ng pelikula dito sa Pilipinas? O ng kahit na sinong gustong gumawa ng sining? Kailangan ba talaga muna nating magpapansin sa ibang bansa para mapansin tayo sa sarili nating bayan? Nakakalungkot naman," he said.

(Is this really the fate of new filmmakers who want to make movies here in the Philippines? Or anyone who wants to make art? Should we be recognized abroad first before being recognized in our own country? That's very sad.)

He also shared that one of his mentors even told him not to do a film for the sake of entering a film festival, but because he wanted to tell a story. He also said that a filmmaker whose film will be shown with other films by notable directors is already an honor.

"Bilang isang baguhang filmmaker, sobrang laking bagay na maipalabas ang una kong pelikula sa sarili kong bansa. Kakaunti lang ang nabibigyan ng ganoong oportunidad kasi hindi na namin kailangang makipagkumpetensya kina Asghar Farhadi at Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Hirap nun men."

(As a new filmmaker, it's a big deal that my first film was shown in my own country. Only a few are given that opportunity because we don't need to compete with the likes of Asghar Farhadi and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. That's so hard.)

He added: Punung-puno ng pagmamahal ang katawan ng bawat taong gumawa ng I'm Drunk, I Love You.

(The people behind I'm Drunk, I Love You are full of love. But the system is slowly killing that love. We're not saying our film is perfect. We're also not saying it would change the face of Philippine cinema. But all of you said you wanted something new, something out of the box. But how come nothing is happening?)

"Hindi kami humihingi ng awa, humihingi lang po kami ng sagot. Bakit?" (we're not asking for your sympathy, we're asking for an answer. Why?)

Giancarlo Abrahan, who worked with JP on the script also posted his sentiments on the issue. Part of his post read: "Nag-effort naman kaming patunayan na gusto naming makaabot sa audience. Kung kailan pinag-uusapan na't maraming gustong manood, saka ganito ang mangyayari?

(We made an effort to prove that we wanted to reach an audience. Just when everyone's talking and want to watch the film, this happens?)

"Bakit? Paano? (Why? How?)

"Masyado pa rin bang pa-obscure at nananadyang walang maintindihan? Parang hindi naman." (Is still too obscure and people cannot still understand it? I don't think so.)

Here's Giancarlo's full statement on Facebook.

The British premier faced criticism at home for becoming the first foreign leader to meet Trump at the White House, hours before he announced a ban affecting all refugees and anyone from 7 Muslim-majority countries.

At the Brit Awards one skeleton wore a dark suit and red tie, while the other was kitted out as a woman in a red suit and matching shoes.

Their similarity to the world leaders did not go unnoticed, sparking a flurry of comments on social media.

The performance dominated the front page of British tabloid the Daily Star, with the headline: "Katy's Brit of a horror show – Perry has a pop at Trump & May."

The Mirror branded it a "controversial Brits performance" in which Perry "slams Theresa May."

Aside from the skeleton controversy, one of Perry's dancers accidentally tumbled from the stage during the show. The clip has become a meme, with many fans recalling Perry's 2015 Super Bowl halftime show, when one of her dancers, dressed as a shark, didn't get the moves exactly right.
