MANILA, Philippines – As balloons rained down at the end of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on July 28 in the US, Jessica Sanchez's voice was played over the speakers. The song: "Stronger Together," an anthem she recorded just for the DNC and Hillary Clinton.

Jessica, a Filipino-Mexican who was raised in the US, told Billboard that she recorded "Stronger Together" less than a week before the DNC. It written by Carole Bayer Sager, Bruce Roberts, and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds for Hillary, and produced by Babyface.

"It was so last minute. I went in the studio, they mixed it that night and they sent it out the next day," she recounted. "It's crazy to me, because I didn't think it was going to happen that quick."

Since it was released, celebrities have praised the message of the song, with lyrics like, "Don't you know that we are stronger together / Stronger, yes we are / So much more when we're united together / One mind, one soul, one heart."

Jessica agreed: "With everything that is going on in the world right now, it's important for all of us to come together and stay strong. The message is great and it's great for the campaign. This is the time for us to play our part and go out and vote and be stronger."

Jessica didn't sing the song live at the DNC, but with Hillary set to use the song on her campaign trail, she might do so soon.

"Stronger Together" isn't available commercially for now. Jessica said she plans on going back to the studio to record a "cleaner" version of the song first. But in the meantime, the full song can be heard in the video below.

'How To Be Yours' Review: Lovely and moving

What a lovely movie.

As soon as the end credits start rolling, right after the unsurprisingly pleasant ending that is to be expected out of a Star Cinema-bankrolled romance, I was left with only one thought. That was one lovely movie. That was one unexpectedly lovely movie.

Precious restraint

However, Dan Villegas’ How To Be Yours isn’t at all unique.

Its portrayal of a romantic relationship from its early endearing stages up to its waning points has been done before, and under the watchful guidance of the head honchos of Star Cinema. Jose Javier Reyes’ Till My Heartaches End (2010), which also stars Gerald Anderson but paired with erstwhile partner Kim Chiu, also tackled a relationship doomed by mismatched priorities. Cathy Garcia-Molina’s A Second Chance (2015), the sequel to One More Chance (2007) which has Bea Alonzo play the wife of John Lloyd Cruz’s ambitious breadwinner, shatters happily-ever-after fantasies peddled by most glossy romances.

What sets Villegas’ film apart is the rare and precious restraint with which all the familiar tropes and indulgences play out.

Screenshot from YouTube/Star Cinema

It isn’t too eager to sell the romance, to embellish itself with marketing a fantasy about how invaluable love is. How To Be Yours is a lot more somber. It shows in the way cinematographer Mycko David’s tames the colors of the film, the way he makes sure that each frame does not feel like they belong within the pages of a teenage magazine. It rings in Emerzon Texon’s sparingly used score, which rightfully blends in only at the right conversations or the apt magical moments.

Seemingly ideal

The film opens with salesman Niño (Anderson) falling instantly in love with Anj (Alonzo), whom he first sees from afar. Through common friends, they meet up, and in that same night they meet, they begin what would be a relationship that would have been perfect except that their priorities are not aligned.

{source}<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Jwa-4uQkp-Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

The script, written by Patrick Valencia and Hyro Aguinaldo, doesn’t really stray too far from formula. There are no surprises, no convoluted twists, and no convenient resolutions. The story simply flows with unmanipulated ease, carried over by smartly written dialogue that paints Niño and Anj’s relationship as one that is within reach, seemingly ideal but has all the opportunities to break and end in heartache.

Screenshot from YouTube/Star Cinema

Villegas is a meticulous craftsman and artist with an invaluable sense for not just the broadest of feelings but also the subtle ones. He is that uncommon director who is able to inject a certain perspective even in the most generic of material. The Breakup Playlist (2015) and Always Be My Maybe (2016) are all carved from similar storylines. But amidst the many romances that Star Cinema has churned out in recent years, those two films believably showcase experiences with love, even though they are presented with all the indulgences of their genre.

In How To Be Yours, Villegas is able to conjure both joy and pain out of the most mundane of interactions.

It certainly helps that Anderson and Alonzo gift their characters with personalities that render them susceptible to be loved and loathed.

Screenshot from YouTube/Star Cinema

It also helps that their tandem is without any of the limiting expectations of celebrated love teams, giving them the freedom to experiment portraying their onscreen relationship with realism that is allowed within the boundaries of what is commercial. They joke. They fight. They sometimes curse when they do. They fall in and out of love how much of the rest of the world would, except that in their case, they do it with a lot more flair, flourish and drama.

Screenshot from YouTube/Star Cinema

Tension and grace

How To Be Yours is conventional entertainment done right. It enthralls without a lot of the pandering to the cheap thrills that commonly pervade romances. It does this without the misdirected ambitions of being anything other than a love story that is grounded not on fairy tales, but on real experiences that have been fictionalized to suit the requirements of formula.

Screenshot from YouTube/Star Cinema

More importantly, it is directed intelligently, with each element serving a purpose that is much more than the simple act of telling the same story over again.

One only needs to experience the enchanting flow of Niño and Anj’s reunion in the end to get a sense that Villegas isn’t simply stitching together scenes to arrive at a celebratory but cheap finish. There is tension, then grace, culminating in a climax that is amusingly sweet but truly earned. Villegas smartly withholds emotions, only to deliver a much more fulfilling reward. Surely, How To Be Yours reallyis the cute, lovely and sometimes moving romance it sets out to be. – Rappler.com

'REVIVAL.' Before the Manila stop on her 'Revival' tour, Selena Gomez talks growing up in the spotlight, taking charge of her career, and her experiments in the kitchen. Screengrab from Instagram/revivaltour

MANILA, Philippines – Selena Gomez is taking her "Revival" tour to Manila on Sunday, July 31 – her first world tour since she left her previous label and produced her own album.

Fully taking charge of her career is still fairly new to Selena, who was managed by her parents up until 2014.

Before that, she grew up in the spotlight – she started acting when she was 7, appearing on Barney & Friends before starring on the Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place. Aside from TV and movies, she also released 3 albums with her band, Selena Gomez & The Scene.

But with singles like "Hands to Myself" and "Same Old Love," Selena's Revival (2015) has topped the charts and can be heard all over the airwaves, proving that she make it on her own.

Before her Manila visit, Selena took the time to answer a few of our questions over email about herself, her album, and her tour.

You're a triple threat – a singer, dancer, and actress. What's your secret talent? And what's the one thing you can't do?

Well, there are plenty of things I can’t do, lol. I like to cook and people might be surprised. I actually like to experiment in the kitchen and not follow any recipes.

What's your favorite song on the album and why?

That is always such a hard question to answer because it changes all of the time. “Kill Em With Kindness” is probably one of my favorites as it is the way I have chosen to live my life. I learned that from my mother from a very early age.

For the very first time I executive produced one of my albums. I have also written more on this album than any of my previous ones. I started recording Revival almost two years ago so even now I feel so different. I was just coming out of a transitional time in my life when I started in the studio with this album. It was a very important album for me as people were going to be looking at this as my first “adult” album. I was on a new label and I wanted to prove myself. I am very proud of the outcome.

We saw you grow and mature as an artist and a young lady. Was there a pivotal moment in your life that you can point to and say that's when you decided to "grow up?"

A couple of years ago when I wanted to take more control of my career and restructured my team was definitely a turning point. I saw it as my I am going off to college moment.

What's the hardest thing you've had to deal with in all your years in the industry? How did you overcome it?

'Ignacio de Loyola' review: Earnest and ambitious

$

Screengrab from YouTube/Jesuit Communications

The biggest asset of Paolo Dy’s Ignacio de Loyola is not its ambition in scope and embellishment. It is its earnestness.

The film, which concentrates on the beginnings of Iñigo de Loyola’s vocation as the first Jesuit, is a daring piece of work.

{source}<iframe width="100%" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qfuaLkKjynI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

Dy, who despite having an established career as a director for ads, commercials, and short films, has never mounted a feature length film. Ignaco de Loyola has him and several other Filipino filmmakers realizing settings and cultures that are not their own.

It all feels hefty, an overwrought epic carved out of a pebble, a pageant whose prettiness seems to outweigh the promise.

Comments and nitpicks

Screengrab from YouTube/Jesuit Communications

There is quite a lot to nitpick here.

The English dialogue, delivered by most of the Spanish actors with distinctly Spanish flourishes, is reminiscent of those westerns where accents add to the badly needed local color. Here, there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the actors to sustain the accent other than to make the atmosphere of the film feel utterly foreign. Otherwise, it is a needless adornment, more an annoyance than a valuable design.

Screengrab from YouTube/Jesuit Communications

The intent to inject the film with spectacle is laudable. There are a lot of beautifully shot and framed sequences in Ignacio de Loyola, scenes that would have the audience fall in love with the endless greens and yellows of the vast meadows in Spain. Combined with Ryan Cayabyab’s persuasive score, the film reveals an innate desire by Dy and his team to graduate from the typical limitations of low-budget filmmaking. There is a clear motive to at least match Hollywood standards of craftsmanship. It shows.

The attempt to recreate medieval battles is quite remarkable. They do look derivative, something out of The Lord of the Rings handbook, but done with just a fraction of the budget. However, the audacity of the endeavor is very worthy of praise.

Bigger problems

Screengrab from YouTube/Jesuit Communications

There are bigger problems.

In framing the story of Iñigo, played thoughtfully by Andreas Muñoz, as one that essentially tackles his transformation from a loyal soldier hailing from an aristocratic family to a suffering preacher, Dy risks turning his film into a single-note affair, a narrative that is desperately searching for a climax. Ignacio de Loyola is lacking a coherent conflict, one that turns what essentially feels like a conventional story of finding faith into a taut and tight piece of entertainment.

Screengrab from YouTube/Jesuit Communications

Interestingly, even though Dy’s film seems to struggle in crafting a firm story out of a more complicated life, it persists by sheer devotion to its core intentions. Ignacio de Loyola does not seek to break boundaries or to create discourse out of a saint’s experiences. It only seeks to enunciate the virtues that adorn the holy man.

Ignacio de Loyola will not win converts, definitely, but some of its better conceived scenes will move hearts.

Film about faith

Screengrab from Facebook/Ignacio de Loyola

It is when Dy decides to do away with the spectacles, the Hollywood aping, and the obvious dramatics that the film truly shines. It is in those humble moments, such as when Iñigo chats with a prostitute about her dreams in life, that the film reveals its true worth, which is to find the humanity in all those religious icons we have conveniently veiled in larger-than-life myths and fables.

Ignacio de Loyola is a film about faith, and as such, it works. The film can be genuinely affecting, even if it goes around in circles just to overstate a message that is quite obvious from the start. – Rappler.com

Earlier, Selena spoke to Rappler about her 2015 record Revival and her world tour. She had to cancel her Manila stop back in 2014 for personal reasons, but she's back with a fresh sound, having taken even more creative control in her own career in the past few years and even restructured her team. It's a move she says is a very important milestone over many years in the entertainment industry; Selena calls it her "going off to college" moment.

"It’s not easy living your life especially growing up in front of everyone. It’s an awkward time for anyone but imagine doing it in front of millions of people. I just have to remind myself of what’s important," Selena says, reflecting on her work in front of the camera.

Which of her songs will we likely hear? We don't know as she's set to surprise her fans, but we leave you with what she says is her favorite on her Revival record: “'Kill Em With Kindness' is probably one of my favorites as it is the way I have chosen to live my life. MANILA, Philippines – Sad news for Game of Thrones fans – though we have heard before that showrunners envisioned the show ending after season 8, there's now word from HBO that next year's 8th season will be its last.

When asked if there were plans to move forward with showrunners' plan to end the show with an 8th season, HBO's programming president Casey Bloys answered in the affirmative to Entertainment Weekly at an event for the Television Critics Association Saturday, July 30.

"Yes, they have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do," he was quoted as saying. "Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more. I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show."

A representative from HBO Asia confirmed to Rappler that the show will be ending after season 8, but that the number of episodes left to air is still uncertain.

We'll be sure to post more details as they come in. Meanwhile, relive the best moments from the previous season here

'Jason Bourne' Review: Entertaining even if repetitive

It is easy to dismiss Paul Greengrass’ Jason Bourne for what it ostensibly is – a propulsive action flick that seemingly doesn’t want to stop, not even for idle conversations.

Replete indulgence

The film, the fourth in the series involving superhuman spy Jason Bourne and the third that is directed by Greengrass, doesn’t pretend that the film is anything but a showcase of his ability to orchestrate coherence and order out of chaos. That, and Matt Damon’s jolting turn as the stoic but vigorous Bourne struggling from the sobering effects of recovering his long-lost memory.

{source}<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HpBIsK_LX3M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

He starts with a reminder of Bourne’s prowess, throwing the brooding hero in a fight with 3 brawlers whom he topples with astounding ease. Simply put, Greengrass has no time for introductions, no room for lengthy explanations. He wants everything in the film to be part of the constantly kinetic multi-city race towards the goal of resurrecting a franchise that already had its satisfying closure in Ultimatum (2007).

The car chases, the car crashes, the motorcycle stunts, the rapid exchanges of messages and information via cyberspace, even the endless crawls down hallways, corridors, and wide spaces – they are all expertly weaved together to form a singular experience that aims to revive a thirst for non-stop action.

The film’s eager assault to the senses works for a while. Greengrass’ jittery camerawork, coupled with his quick cutting style, provokes at first before developing a frenzied rhythm that makes utter sense, given that the film relies predominantly on maintaining a certain level of tension from start to finish.

Unfortunately, the rush gets old and tiring. The rampant chaos, shot understandably with a design that looks as if it weren’t designed, gets woefully repetitive. By the time Damon ends up in another chase amidst a frazzled crowd, the excitement dwindles and the build-up staggers. Jason Bourne ultimately becomes an exercise of replete indulgence.

Interesting ideas

This isn’t to say that Jason Bourne is just thoughtless spectacle.

The film, written by Greengrass and Christopher Rouse, attempts to situate Bourne within scenarios that are contemporary and relevant. He hops from one city to another, establishing a world that is troubled with conflicts and concerns. He is first hunted in the streets and alleyways of Athens beset by anti-austerity riots. The mood in London where he is to be entrapped by his enemies is one of paranoia, with suited office workers instantly disturbed by the sound of sirens.

The film doesn’t need to slow down to display its currency. Even as the action keeps propelling forward, Jason Bourne still manages to place itself in a world that is strangely and disquietingly familiar. It certainly helps that a chunk of the narrative seems to be culled from real world dilemmas, and a lot of the characters feel like they were inspired from an odd mix of real people and fictional cut-outs.

Riz Ahmed (Aaron Kalloor) is obviously a token for all the charismatic Facebook-era billionaires. His dilemma of allowing his precious social network to be a platform for government spying alludes to recent headlines about technology firms who are forced to balance their user’s privacy concerns with national security. CIA Director Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) feels like a standard-issue bureaucrat, a hardened government official whose morals are defined by duty.

His enigmatic protégé Heather (Alicia Vikander) is a more refreshing creation, a woman whose motives remain a mystery even when everybody else’s are out in the open.

Entertaining even if repetitive

Jason Bourne, despite a title that feels like it will be more character-driven,doesn’t really do anything to turn Bourne into anything other than the rampaging human weapon that all the previous films characterize him to be.

He actually doesn’t say much, just a few words and phrases Damon mutters with the littlest effort possible. The character simply reacts to whatever happens around him. He is the film’s biggest spectacle, the primary mover of all the violence, intrigue and destruction.

True, the film remains entertaining even if it gets torturously repetitive, but essentially, Jason Bourne is nothing more than an extension of a series that is more profitable if its main character remains to be a brash stereotype. – Rappler.com

BACK IN SEPTEMBER? Paolo Ballesteros says he hopes to be back in 'Eat Bulaga' very soon after being away since March. Screengrab from Instagram/@pochoy_29

MANILA, Philippines – TV host Paolo Ballesteros spoke up about his absence on Eat Bulaga after reports he was suspended by TAPE management a few months back due to his behavior.

In an interview with PEP during the set visit of his movie Bakit Lahat Ng Gwapo May Boyfriend, Paolo said that he was on "vacation" and that he will not appear on the show for 6 months.

"Bakasyon, bakasyon na may time limit," he said. "Ang sabi kasi sa akin, 6 months. Nakaka-4 months na ako, so parang sa September ang 6 months ko."

(A vacation, a vacation with a time limit. They told me it was 6 months. I've already served 4 months so I think in September, it'll be 6 months already.)

Paolo admitted that he misses being on the show and hopes to be back. He added that he was overwhelmed by the messages he has been getting on social media.

"Oo nga, nakaka-overwhelm nga sa Twitter. Kapag binuksan ko ngang lahat, puro, 'I miss you, I miss you,'" Paolo said.

(Yes, it's really overwhelming on Twitter. When I check my social media accounts, it's all, 'I miss you, I miss you.')

"Pati sa Instagram, 'yung mga comments, puro 'I miss you, I miss you,'" he added.

(Even on Instagram, all the comments are 'I miss you, I miss you.')

Paolo also shared that he misses being Lola Tidora, his character in Eat Bulaga's Kalyeserye.

When asked what he has learned from his "suspension," Paolo said: "Bawal ang maldita." (Don't be a bitch.)

Aside from Bakit Lahat Ng Gwapo May Boyfriend, Paolo is also doing another film under Jun Robles Lana called Die Beautiful.

DEFENDING JESSY. Lea Salonga says she finds Jessy Mendiola very sexy in her own way, adding that being sexy isn't just about looks. Photos by Paolo Abad & Alecs Ongcal/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – The Voice Kids coach and Broadway star Lea Salonga defended Jessy Mendiola as the actress continues to get criticized online after topping FHM's 100 Sexiest 2016 list.

Jessy has been getting many negative comments on social media, with some calling her "fat," or not even deserving of the title. (IN PHOTOS: Stars at 'FHM's 100 Sexiest' 2016)

On her Facebook page, Lea wrote: "For the record, I think Jessy Mendiola is one of the sexiest people I've ever cast my eyes on. It has less to do with her physique (which, by the way, is nothing to sneeze at) and more to do with how she carries herself. She could gain 20 pounds right now and my opinion of her wouldn't change."

Lea added: "Sexy has nothing to do with the outer shell and all to do with what's in you. You could be a Victoria's Secret model and have zero sex appeal, or be someone customarily plus-sized and get everyone in the room to set their gaze upon you. Or your opinion could differ from mine and not be any less valid. It's in the eye of the beholder."

{source}<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fmissleasalonga%2Fposts%2F10154234939275482&width=500" width="500" height="458" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true"></iframe>{/source}

In an interview with reporters during the Star Magic anniversary Sunday, July 31, Jessy said that she has read some of the comments about her online.

"We all have our own opinions[...] We can all post whatever opinions we want to post or our views or our ideas. Kaya lang sana (I just hope), let's all be responsible," she said.

Jessy added that she visits the profiles of those who comment on her social media accounts and shared that some of them are very young.

"Let's put aside all the hate and the bashing. Let's be more responsible not only for us, our actions or our words but also for our future generation," she said.

Even before topping FHM's 100 Sexiest 2016 list, Jessy has been getting negative comments on her social media accounts. In May, she posted a photo of herself in a bikini while in Boracay and addressed the nonstop body-shaming against her.

On her Instagram account, she wrote:

"My body may not be perfect but that will not stop me from being confident with myself. I've had my fair share of body shaming comments. So I know how it feels like to be called 'FAT' or 'TUMABA'. Well, just to inform some of you 'PERFECT' people. We all come in different sizes and shapes but that shouldn't stop us from being happy with our own bodies.

"There are times that you will gain weight and there are times that you will lose it. It's normal. It just shows that you are a human being. So whether you are curvy, malaman, skinny, too skinny, on the plus size or even on the plus plus size, you have ALL the right to be confident with yourself because that is who and what YOU are. If you don't love yourself enough, who else will?

"Think about it. So go ahead girl, wear that bikini and FLAUNT it. After all, it's YOUR body. Not theirs. Sabi nga ni Demi Lovato 'What's wrong with being confident.'" – with a report from Alexa Villano / Rappler.com

NOT AN ISSUE. Jessy Mendiola says she is grateful to Pia Wurtzbach for defending her after she was criticized for her joke during the FHM event. Photos by Rob Reyes/Instagram/@piawurtzbach

MANILA, Philippines – Jessy Mendiola spoke up about the comment she made regarding Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach after she got criticized on social media.

In an interview with reporters during the Star Magic anniversary on Sunday, July 31, Jessy said the comment was taken out of context. (IN PHOTOS: Jessy Mendiola at FHM's 100 Sexiest 2016)

"Para sa akin at that moment, nag joke ako na para bang 'Shucks talo ko pa si Pia sa trato sa akin ngayon.' Kumbaga, parang what I meant was 'yung context na grabe 'yung overwhelming feeling. Kumbaga, 'yung trato ninyo sa akin, parang queen na din," Jessy said.

(For me at that moment, I joked that it was like 'Shucks I beat Pia the way I'm being treated now.' In other words, what I meant was that I really felt overwhelmed. In other words, I was also treated like a queen.)

"It was taken out of context andnung nabalitaan ko, nabasa ko nga, parang natawa na lang ako. Parang really?…Wala naman ako sinabi na sobrang sama para magalit yung taong-bayan sa akin."

(It was taken out of context and when I heard about it, I read about it, I found it amusing. Like really?... I did not even say anything that would make everyone mad at me.)

Jessy also said she's grateful that Pia even defended her over the issue. On Twitter, Pia said she saw nothing wrong with the viral video where Jessy said: "Talo ko pa si Pia Wurtzbach diba? Nakakaloka ang ganito, sobrang overwhelming. Kung siya confidently beautiful with a heart, tayo sexy, so confidently sexy with a heart."

(I beat Pia Wurtzbach right? This is really crazy, it's so overwhelming. If she's confidently beautiful with a heart, I'm sexy, so confidently sexy with a heart.)

In response, the beauty queen said: "What I saw was a girl who was just really ecstatic to be given that recognition. Nothing wrong with that. Congratulations, Jessy!"

"I asked some of my friends na friends din niya to extend my gratitude. Ang sweet nga niya to tweet that. Kung siya nga nakita niya as a joke 'yun, bakit parang other people won't see that as a joke?" Jessy said.

(I asked some of my friends who are also friends with her to extend my gratitude. It was very sweet of her to tweet that. If she saw it as a joke, why won't other people see that as a joke?)

Jessy also defended herself after many accused her of letting fame go to her head. (READ: Lea Salonga defends Jessy Mendiola over body-shaming comments)

"Sa pagkakaalam ko, hindi ako nagmayabang. Pangalawa, wala naman akong nilait na tao o kaya minaltrato. Pero siguro for me, why do people hate others who are so just confident with themselves? Sa panahon ngayon, instead of, you know, us women helping each other to stand up and be strong, tayo pa 'yung [nagsisiraan]. Pag nakita natin 'yung flaw niya, ididiin pa natin, na instead of it's okay, you have this to feel pretty or to feel confident."

(From what I know, I wasn't being arrogant. Second, I did not criticize or mistreat anyone. But I guess for me, why do people hate others who are so just confident with themselves? During these times, instead of, you know, us women helping each other to stand up and be strong, we're the ones who [destroy each other]. If we see a woman's flaw, we would keep emphasizing it instead of saying it's okay, you have this to feel pretty, to feel confident.)

"Kumbaga, na sana not only with women [but] all the people, not only on social media... Tignan muna natin 'yung mga sarili natin bago magsalita ng masasama sa iba," Jessy added.

(I mean it's not only women [but] all the people, not only on social media... Let's assess ourselves first before we say anything bad about others.) – Rappler.com

In the same interview, Sam said that since Mari is not really in showbiz, they prefer to keep their relationship private as much as they can.

"It becomes more complicated when people try to be more involved. They try to think they know what's going on. Most of my life is in the spotlight, in the public eye. I like the fact na (that) she's a very private person and she wants to keep our relationship private also," he said.

Before Mari, Sam's last serious relationship was with Anne Curtis, which lasted 4 years. He was also linked to Maja Salvador, Shaina Magdayao, and Jessy Mendiola. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The 2016 Teen Choice Awards handed out huge surfboard trophies to celebrate those making waves in movies, TV, music, fashion, and more on Sunday, July 31 (August 1 in Manila) at the Forum in Inglewood, California, USA.

The awards show was hosted by John Cena and Victoria Justice, and was graced by performances from the likes of Flo Rida, Bebe Rexha, Charlie Puth, Ne-Yo, Serayah, and Jason Derulo.

Even though the show was peppered with plenty of jokes about the presidential campaign and Pokémon Go, there was a somber moment, too, as Jessica Alba introduced teenagers who were affected by gun violence– siblings, sons, and daughters of those who died in Sandy Hook, Orlando's Pulse nightclub, and other tragic shootings.

Justin Timberlake was also honored with the Decade Award, receiving it from Kobe Bryant.

FOREVER. Actress Rosanna Roces says she and partner Blessy Arias will marry in Canada, with another ceremony in the Philippines scheduled in December. Screengrab from Facebook/Jennifer Cruz Adriano

MANILA, Philippines – Actress Rosanna Roces said that she and partner Blessy Arias will marry in Canada next month, where same-sex marriage is legal. The couple will have another ceremony in the Philippines scheduled in December.

In an interview on Rated K, Sunday, July 31, Rosanna or Osang shared how she asked Blessy if they could finally get married. The two first met when they were teenagers.

"Will you marry me Bless? Ganun 'yung pagkasabi ko," Rosanna said. "Bless, I want to marry you. Taray pa din, 'di ba? Nag-yes siya agad. (She said yes right away.)"

Blessy said: "[Kapag] magkasama kami (When we're together), 'yung simplicity ng life. Iyon 'yung tumatak sa akin. Hindi 'yung the showbiz side of her. (It's the simplicity of life – that's what made an impact on me. Not the showbiz side of her.)"

The couple expressed how they are looking forward to spending the rest of their lives together.

"I'll never have to sleep alone at night," Blessy said, as Rosanna added: "Sarap 'no (It feels good right)?"

"Buti na lang ni-ready ko 'yung sarili ko na single ako para pagdating nung forever ko, single ako. So alam mo iyon, tumatak talaga sa isip ko na marunong ka maghintay," Rosanna said.

(I'm just glad that I readied myself to be single so that when my 'forever' arrives, I'll be single. So you know, it just really stuck to my head that you have to learn how to wait.)

Last February on Tonight with Boy Abunda, Rosanna confirmed that she was in a relationship. She was previously married to Tito Molina. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – As the Buwan ng Wika celebrations kick off this August, Uzo Aduba, who is known for playing Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren on the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, shares a message for her Pinoy fans – in Filipino, no less!

Uzo begins her greeting, and her pronunciation is quite impressive: "Hello, pare! Kumusta?"

According to Netflix Asia representatives, she learned her lines in about 5 minutes!

As the lovable Litchfield Penitentiary inmate known as "Crazy Eyes," the Emmy Award-winning actress has played her character with such weird but lovable antics on the hit web series, which is currently streaming its 4th season.

IN PHOTOS: Selena Gomez thrills in first Manila concert

What comes to mind when thinking about Selena Gomez's concert is one of my all time favourite quotes, “Fake it ‘till you make it.” No, it's not meant in a negative way or as a derogatory statement – as one might assume at first glance – but an inspirational phrase said to me by one of my early mentors, Zig Ziglar.

It's often misinterpreted as a suggestion to put up pretenses to fool the masses. Let me tell you, the masses are not so easily fooled. This is more of a phrase about finding the strength from within (maybe fooling yourself a bit) and more about showing up.

And show up she did! Indeed, just a few years back, her first scheduled concert here, and parts of of the Australia and Asia for that matter, was canceled, a huge disappointment for fans.

We all have tough days. It’s no different for a superstar, perhaps even more taxing when your life is viewed under a microscope by millions. Regardless, you just have to pull up your bootstraps, walk the walk, put on a smile and do your best, sometimes it’s more than half the battle, to simply just show up. Surprisingly, after you get the ball rolling, something wonderfully instinctive begins to take over and you’re rocking and rolling before you even realise it, once you get the rhythm, it ain’t so bad after all.

I interpreted the flow of this concert in a similar fashion. The stage production here was pared down a bit, in comparison up to the system in the US portion of her Revival tour.

For this tour, there's a huge rolling main stage with a painted deck which creates an illusion of 3 interlocking, individual runways, with multiple trap doors where dancers emerge and exit, strategically placed high-speed wind machines to attain the full windblown hair effect, exercise balls incorporated into the dance routines, scissor lifts.

There were interactive rolling stage-prop triangles incorporated into the design, at times used as screens for magical costume changes, huge angular tipped video panels, the center one of which, lifts from the base to allow for a grand entrance and exit, multi-level scaffolding for dancers and musicians, enormous stage-to-ceiling inflatable single stem red roses and huge LED orbs.

Many of the aspects were present here, with musicians positioned up on the stage scaffolding at the start of the show and the same props you’d see in previous productions, but some pieces had been simplified, the intricate stage deck morphed into the typical rectangular shape design with a catwalk added for drama, no trap doors needed.

With live video feeds often showing close ups or perfectly planned full shots so it provided a connection with the entire crowd, including the folks further away from the stage. It was in a wonderfully animated style, made it relatively easy to catch images showing a vibrant expression. There were various themed segments, often with a risqué style you typically witness in today’s pop music.

A polished branded look to the videos, which were presented at perfect intervals, coincided with multiple outfit changes for the dance crew and Selena. The stage design, video presentations and outfits, all matched up quite well.

Everything skilfully matched to the composition of the various segments and the overall feel of the show. The giant roses were cool, to accompany a New Orleans Mardi Gras stage but what impressed me was the creative use of such a common item, such as an exercise ball, as they mixed it into an entertaining and energetic routine.

This dance team really had it together, bounding and tumbling, constantly moving to the beat, a well-executed and carefully choreographed routine throughout, keeping up the energy up, a nice complement to the show.

There were some bumps, but just as in my favourite quote, somewhere along the line, maybe 6 or 7 songs in, something changed and she began to hit her stride. A concert is a two-way street, with travelers in either direction, often advancing at different speeds, and the energy from the fans began to elevate the performance itself.

As the concert progressed you could feel her enthusiasm catching up with the crowd's fervor, and you could see it physically, with a zip in her step and the vocals smoothing out. She created electric moments that all concertgoers seek, where the music was emanating from her with a surreal, natural ease and artist and the admirers connected as one.

She addressed the crowd periodically, commenting on their exemplary demeanor, tidbits of insights about the upcoming song, along with quips about a life lesson in general.

There was a portion of the show where they rocked it out, flanked by her two guitarists, tearing up some outstanding riffs, as she belted the vocals as the audience cheered her on.

My favorite portions of the concert took place later on, the Eurythmics cover song, “Sweet Dreams”, music from my youth that I can relate to and when it was just her at the grand piano center stage, that’s where she really shined. There were no dancers, stage props or other distractions, just a simple spotlight, highlighting her incredible vocal gift, without the overwhelming static that can often mask much of what we want to hear, on and offstage.

It was one of the more tender and touching moments of the show. By the end of the event everyone’s speedometer was in sync, just how you’d envision a performance should be.

Like a steam engine, which takes a while to build up speed, once you get it going, there’s no stopping it and it appears that her Revival Tour is doing just that. If you follow her career path, since the beginning, as a child actor on the Barney show, to her years with the Disney organization, leading up until now, you’ll know her journey is a singular one, surpassing what a typical performing artist would have experienced in their entire career, never mind at the tender young age of 24.

Keep an eye out for her continuing saga with the good, the bad and the ugly (she said herself that her fans really have seen most of her life, as she grew up in front of the camera) for all to see, just scratching the surface on this woman's talent, hence her enormous popularity.

Kudos for hanging in there and overcoming challenges that would send most folks running home with their tail between their legs. She promised the crowd that she would return. Some artists just say that, but in two or three years time, I think she’ll show up again – make sure you don't miss the show next time! – Rappler.com

Frank Ocean new album comes out of woodwork

NEW YORK, USA – After months of suspense on Frank Ocean's long-awaited new album Boys Don't Cry, the artist on Monday, August 1, shared some news – that he can saw wood.

The mellow hip-hop star put on his website a mysterious livestream that appeared to show him doing woodwork next to two tables and amplifiers.

Little else was clear about the livestream, which by afternoon showed the room was empty and the only sound was static.

Fans on social media speculated about the meaning, with one theory being that Ocean was explaining that he was still working on the album.

Ocean has revealed little about Boys Don't Cry other than the title. His website shows a library due-date card with a series of dates; the only future one is November 13, raising speculation that is the album's release date.

Ocean won wide acclaim for his 2012 debut album Channel Orange, which defies easy classification by bringing together R&B, jazz and funk with Ocean's gentle, often-falsetto voice.

Much of the album revolves around feelings of first and unrequited love. Ocean later revealed that his first love was a man, a rare openness in the often macho world of hip-hop that led stars including Jay Z to applaud him for coming out.

At least one sign was unambiguous on his website's livestream – the logo of Apple Music, the streaming service of the tech giant.

Apple Music has sought out exclusives as it tries to challenge streaming leader Spotify, although it was unclear if Boys Don't Cry will be among them.

Canadian rapper Drake initially made his Views, the top-selling album released this year in the United States, an exclusive on Apple Music and Apple's iTunes.

Music-streaming service Tidal, led by Jay Z, has also had initial exclusives for some of the biggest releases this year – Beyonce's Lemonade and Rihanna's Anti. – Rappler.com

Kesha drops California lawsuit against Dr Luke

MANILA, Philippines – In California, Kesha and Lukasz "Dr Luke" Gottwald's legal battle has ended.

Kesha has dropped her California rape and sexual abuse claims against Dr Luke, the founder of Kemosabe Records (part of Sony Music), which is still signed to.

The pop star, however, is still pursuing her appeals in New York, where a judge dismissed her request to be freed from her exclusive contract with Kemosabe, which says she is obligated to record her next 6 albums with the label.

In an official statement, Kesha's legal counsel Daniel Petrocelli said: "Kesha has dismissed her California action without prejudice while she pursues her appeal and other legal claims in the New York courts.

She has also sent 28 new songs to Kemosabe hoping to release a new album soon.

"Kesha is focused on getting back to work and has delivered 28 new songs to the record label. We have conveyed to Sony and the label Kesha's strong desire to release her next album and single as soon as possible."

In response, Dr Luke's lawyer, Christine Lepera, told Rolling Stone: "If Kesha is voluntarily dismissing her claims in the California case, it is because she has no chance of winning them. Earlier this year, she lost her meritless counterclaims against Dr. Luke in the New York Action.

"Recently, the California Court invited Dr. Luke and the other defendants to move to dismiss Kesha's claims in that action. Kesha never should have brought her false and meritless claims against Dr. Luke in any court. Dr. Luke's defamation and other claims against Kesha are still proceeding."

In 2014, Kesha filed claims in California of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse against Dr Luke, saying that he abused her sexually while she was under the influence.

Dr Luke countersued in New York, claiming defamation, which put Kesha's California case on hold since June of last year.

In New York, Kesha also then filed against Dr Luke a similar set of claims as that in California.

Since it started, Kesha's case has garnered the support of many female musicians, including Adele, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift.

The last song Kesha released was "True Colors," a collaboration with Zedd, with the permission of Kemosabe and Sony. Prior to that, she was featured on Pitbull's song, "Timber," released in 2013.– Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Reel-to-real life couple James Reid and Nadine Lustre has been featured on Teen Vogue, a US-based magazine.

In the online article, "James Reid and Nadine Lustre are the Filipino Love Team You Need to Know" written by Isis Briones, the two shared details about how their love team began and how they fell in love.

The writer also discussed the topic of love teams in the Philippines, which she described as something that "completely elevates the portrayal of love in movies, TV, music, and books in a way that westerners don’t even think about."

Nadine narrated that they first met when they worked on one of James' music video.

"The first time we got paired together was for his music video,"  she said, as James added, "She was the girl I picked, it was just instinct."

“After that music video, nothing really happened… [until] our first movie," James referred to the hit movie Diary ng Panget.

"That’s when the JaDine love team started, the fans made the name."

Both also said that in the beginning, being paired as a tandem was just a job: "We never pretended to be together or lied to the fans. We were just friends, but they didn’t think so."

"When you’re in a love team, you have to work together,” James said, as Nadine explained: "People hated seeing you with someone else. When they did, fans started talking. There was a lot of drama.”

She later added: "If you’re in a love team, you get all of the projects together. You’re a package deal."

Last February, they finally confirmed they have become a real-life couple. James admitted to Teen Vogue that it "was a good decision and a weight off our shoulders."

After the success of their JaDine in Love World Tour, the two also launched a book called Team Real and are currently taping their latest soap Till I Met You, which is yet to have a definite air date.– Rappler.com
