‘Mission Unstapabol: The Don Identity’ review: A worthwhile spoof

Those who can’t, spoof.

If staying true to the genre seems to be creatively and logistically impossible, then let humor be a crutch for all the shortcomings. Joyce Bernal’s Gandarrapiddo: The Revenger Squad (2017) Mike Tuviera’s Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles and Barry Gonzales’ Fantastica(2018) are all half-baked about their genre aspirations, the shoddiness in the crafting and special effects seemingly adjuncts of their being a cross between a film and a gag reel.

Seems like a spoof

Tuviera’s Mission Unstapabol: The Don Identity seems like another one of those spoofs, a movie that borrows some of the familiar conceits of blockbusters like Mission: Impossible and The Bourne Identity only to forge jokes around them.

Thankfully, the film, while far from excellent, isn’t bad.

Don Roberto Fortun (Vic Sotto) has just been released from jail where he spent 20 years of imprisonment for the death of a famed treasure hunter. He is, of course, innocent and in an effort to clear his name, he recruits his chauffeur (Jelson Bay), a failed boxer (Jake Cuenca), a failed magician (Pokwang), a bit player (Wally Bayola) and a mysterious hacker (Maine Mendoza) to help him steal a gigantic pearl from his brother Benjie Fortun (Jose Manalo), who turns out to be the perpetrator of the crime he was imprisoned for.

Mission Unstapabol still teeters towards being a spoof, but what separates it from the other makeshift comedy hybrids is that it actually puts an effort in going through most of the tropes of the genre.

The film doesn’t have the most elaborate heist but it at least pushes through with it, complete with all the red herrings, the meticulous scheming and the supposedly clever twists. What really differentiates Mission Unstapabol is that Tuviera affords the genre enough respect not to reduce it to lousy punchlines.

PAYBACK. Don Roberto (Vic Sotto) vows to clear his name from a crime he did not commit.

Still quite funny

Make no mistake, Mission Unstapabol is still quite funny.

It is still predominantly a comedy, still peppered with jokes that range from bland to hilarious.

Sotto is still a charming presence. However, the film is really enjoyable because of the rapport of the supporting cast. While it is true that Bay, Pokwang, Bayola and Manalo aren’t exactly reinventing their comedy but their rapport with each other is precious. Mendoza and Cuenca’s attempt at chemistry may be paltry but at least that romantic angle adds a bit of color to the ensemble.

What is apparent is that the actors here play actual written characters instead of adjuncts to their being familiar celebrities.

TEAM. Don Roberto and his group are ready for their mission.

Fun and somewhat innovative

Believe it or not, Mission Unstapabol is a refreshing effort from Tuviera, Sotto and their usual team.

The film doesn’t feel like a cash grab, like there’s an actual endeavor to come up with something that is both fun and somewhat innovative. It properly blends humor and genre, ending up a being genuinely pleasant surprise. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – An entire decade – and movie franchise arc – just ended, and John Boyega isn't holding back.

The actor, who plays Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, poked fun and threw shade at the "romance" between two protragonists in the recently-concluded trilogy: that of Rey and Kylo Ren.

Boyega posted on Twitter screenshots of 4 scenes featuring Daisy Ridley (Rey) and Adam Driver (Kylo Ren).

"Star Wars romance," he tweeted, including a kiss, side-eye, and smiling emoji. "John Boyega" trended both in the Philippines and worldwide as a result.

The 4 scenes show Kylo interrogating Rey, two scenes of the two dueling and...

** Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker spoilers ahead **

...Rey stabbing Kylo.

In the sequel trilogy, Ridley plays Rey, a scavenger who had been abandoned in Jakku. Driver, meanwhile, plays the mysterious Kylo Ren who is later revealed to be Ben Solo, son of Han and Princess (later, General) Leia Organa. Throughout the first two movies, the two confront each other both in real life and, somehow, through the force.

But it's in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the last movie of the trilogy and the 9-movie Skywalker saga that we finally find out about Rey's origins and Kylo-slash-Ben's eventual fate. And while their relationship isn't explicitly mentioned in any of the movies, there's at least one scene in the The Rise of Skywalker that at least tries to spell it out.

Although The Rise of Skywalker has made money in the box office, it's been criticized by both movie critics and fans alike.

The Rise of Skywalker is slated to be the last movie featuring the Skywalker family – all 3 trilogies focused on various members of the powerful family, from Anakin's descent to the Dark Side, Luke's journey to be a Jedi and discovery of his roots, Leia's rise in the Rebel Alliance and the Resistance, and eventually, Kylo's own journey.

The Star Wars franchise, however, is far from over. The Mandalorian, a spin-off series, is currently streaming on Disney+. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, meanwhile, has said that they're eyeing long-form story telling as the future of the beloved franchise.

The movie had a limited run in the Philippines from December 20 to 22, 2019. It will return to cinemas on January 8, 2020. – Rappler.com

WATCH: Solenn Heussaff talks about 'serious roadblocks' in pregnancy

MANILA, Philippines – Hours after welcoming Thylane Katana into the world on January 1, 2020, actress and TV host Solenn Heussaff posted a video blog about her pregnancy journey – including its many ups and heartbreaking downs.

"The road started out super easy, but we hit pretty serious roadblocks toward the end. But even with all that's happened, this is the reason why 2019 was one of the best years ever and why this new year will be even better," Solenn wrote in the caption of the video posted on YouTube.

Solenn gave birth to a baby girl on January 1, hours after she and husband, businessman Nico Bolzico, checked into the hospital after a checkup. (READ: Solenn Heussaff gives birth to baby girl)

In the video, shot before she gave birth, Solenn explains that while the first 5 months of her pregnancy were a breeze, the last stretch was a little more testy.

At her 5th month, they found out that her baby was at a lower percentile, meaning it was smaller than most babies. "Nico and I were crying everyday. We almost thought we were going to have to give birth at 5 months," Solenn said.

The painter and actress later found out that she was prone to forming blood clots – meaning she had to be injected blood thinners on the daily. Solenn showed a footage of a nervous Nico injecting her very pregnant belly with medicine, and the bruising on her belly and arm that followed the shots was visible. It was around this time that Nico became both nurse and husband to the pregnant Solenn.

"I feel so good so I didn't get it. I could't understand why this was happening to me," a visibly emotional Solenn shared.

Solenn also said that towards the end, she was put on a 3,000-calorie diet – a huge jump from the 1,200 calories she consumes on the regular. "Who would've thought that eating would be so hard?" she mused. And then she had another problem: placental calcification.

Solenn said she documented her journey for those who might just be going through the same thing. "To all the preggos there, just be patient and know that you're not alone in the scary things you might be going through," she said.

Solenn and Nico married in France in May 2016. They have been together since 2011. They announced that they were expecting their first child, a baby girl, in August.

Nico had earlier talked about how much he's grown to admire Solenn even more as she goes through the ups and downs of pregnancy.

Before she gave birth, Solenn pulled a simple but nerve-wracking prank on Nico – that her water had already broke. – Rappler.com

NEW YORK, USA – Pop diva Mariah Carey has had a long list of hits over the years, but her classic holiday song has helped her make history as the first artist to top the Billboard charts in four separate decades.

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" is number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week dated January 4, 2020, based on sales, radio airplay and streaming data – its third week atop the rankings.

That means Carey has had a number one single in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s.

The bubbly, ubiquitous holiday tune was first released in 1994 and gained new fame after its inclusion on the soundtrack for the 2003 film Love, Actually.

But it only topped the charts for the first time in late 2019, thanks to a change in Billboard's rules as to what can be included on the top songs list.

Carey dropped a new video for it – which counts towards Hot 100 placement – and released the song as a stand-alone CD single for the first time.

It is her 19th number one hit, according to Billboard, putting her just one song behind The Beatles' overall record of 20 top songs.

The singer – who will not confirm whether her age is 49 or 50 because she says "time is not something I acknowledge" – was low-key about her history-making achievement.

"Yaaaaaaaaay!!! WE. DID. IT," Carey wrote on Twitter, with a stream of champagne and party emojis.

"But.... what's a decade?"

LOS ANGELES, USA – Syd Mead, the visual artist behind Blade Runner credited with shaping the sci-fi landscape with his futuristic movie designs, has died in California aged 86.

Mead, who worked on films including Aliens, Tron, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture, died Monday following a battle with lymphoma cancer, his partner Roger Servick told multiple outlets.

A post on Mead's Facebook page confirmed the news, with the words "Syd Mead 1933-2019."

Mead had started his career in industrial design for the car and electronics industries, working for Ford, Chrysler, Sony, and Philips, before switching to film.

His concept art for a dystopian future Los Angeles in Ridley Scott's 1982 neo-noir classic Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford, won widespread acclaim.

He retired in September.

News of his death was mourned by leading figures across the automotive and entertainment sectors.

"Rest in peace Syd Mead. Your art will endure," tweeted Tesla founder Elon Musk.

"He was one of the greatest designers and futurists of our time," wrote John McElroy, publisher of the website Autoline, who first broke the news.

Art Directors Guild president Nelson Coates last month called Mead "one of the most influential concept artists and industrial designers of our time."

Mead's recent movie art credits included Mission: Impossible III, Elysium, and acclaimed 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Kings are back!

After going on hiatus with its members entering mandatory military service, K-pop boy band BIGBANG is making quite the comeback as it joins the lineup of artists for the 2020 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Coachella, which runs for two weekends in April, announced their full lineup of artists on January 3.

BIGBANG is set to perform on the festival's Friday shows on April 10 and April 17. The group includes members G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, and Daesung. One of its members, Seungri, retired from the entertainment industry in March 2019 after he was accused of offering prostitutes to investors in his nightclub, Burning Sun.

The last time BIGBANG performed was on December 31, 2017, prior to the members' military enlistment. They were discharged last year.

Another K-pop act, hip-hop group Epik High, is part of Coachella's Sunday line-up, with performances slated for April 12 and April 19.

For 2020, Coachella's headliners include Rage Against the Machine for the Friday shows, Travis Scott for the Saturday shows, and Frank Ocean for the Sunday shows.

Other artists on the Coachella lineup include Calvin Harris, Run the Jewels, Flume, Carly Rae Jepsen, Lana del Rey, and FKA Twigs.

Coachella will be held in Indio, California from April 10 to 12, and April 17 to 19. Tickets for the first weekend are already sold out. – Rappler.com

JaDine: A timeline

$

MANILA, Philippines – Could the new year possibly mean a new start for James Reid and Nadine Lustre – without each other?

On January 1, showbiz publication Pep.ph, citing an unnamed source, said the two called it quits, citing "irreconcilable differences" – as if the couple were going through a divorce, and saying that Nadine has moved out of James' house in Quezon City. Pep also noted in the January 1 report that the couple has been absent from each other's Instagram feeds during the holiday season.

But eagle-eyed fans of the on-and-off-screen couple were quick to point out that the two actually rang in the new year together, as seen on the Instagram stories of their friends.

As of this writing, neither James or Nadine have addressed the breakup rumors directly, but Nadine did post Instagram stories of the couple's Corgi Cal on January 1 and 2. In one of the stories, Cal is being cuddled by someone who appears to be James. On January 3, Nadine shared a post to promote James' appearance at a California music festival.

Whatever their relationship status is at the moment, one thing's for sure: JaDine is one of most beloved celebrity couples in the country.

Here's a look at their relationship so far:

August 2013: JaDine is born

Nadine – then known as a former member of the girl group Pop Girls – first played James' leading lady in his music video for the song "Alam Niya Ba," which was released in August 2013.

The video isn't even 4 minutes long, but it was enough for people to catch on to the pair's chemistry. Within a year, they would end up starring in two films together (Diary ng Panget and Talk Back You're Dead) and sign exclusive contracts for ABS-CBN.

The JaDine fever really began to take hold when the two starred in the teleserye On The Wings of Love. The show first aired in August 2015, and ended in a grand two-part finale with a live viewing party on February 26, 2016.

February 2016: Reel to real

It was at the height of the JaDine craze that James and Nadine first came out as a real life couple. On February 20, 2016, at their Jadine in Love concert, fans lost their minds when James told Nadine that he loved her – for everyone to hear. He later confirmed in an interview with Bandila that he meant it.

According to Viva Entertainment's publicity team, the two officially became a couple on February 11, 2016.

July 2017: 'Come on, guys'

About a year into their relationship, Nadine gave birth to a meme when she responded to questions of her moving in with James with a now immortal line: "Come on guys, it's 2017."

She later said in 2018 that moving in together with one's boyfriend shouldn't be an issue anymore.

The couple took a break from the big screen for a year, and came back all grown up in Antoinette Jadaone's Never Not Love You, where they played a couple trying to juggle their career, their dreams, and their relationship.

The two made quite an entrance at their first ABS-CBN Ball appearance, slaying the red carpet in fierce all-black outfits that showed just how far they've come from their wholesome OTWOL days.

March 2019: James admits they're living together

Nadine has managed to dodge the question of their living situation for years, but it took one conversation between James and Vice Ganda to confirm that they have, in fact, been cohabitating.

"Well, we live together, so," James said casually after Vice asked him about how they keep their 3-year relationship fresh.

December 2019: Nadine signs for James' label, Careless

2019 was definitely the year that James and Nadine's careers took separate paths. Ulan, Nadine's first movie without James premiered in March 2019, to be followed by another solo film, Indak, in August 2019.

Meanwhile, James left Viva Artists Agency, which managed him and Nadine for years. He is also working on a TV series with Momoland's Nancy McDonie

Despite their careers seemingly diverging, the two gave hope that they would continue to work together when Nadine signed as one of the artists for James' music label, Careless in December.

January 2020: New Year's together

James and Nadine may have been curiously absent from each other's social media feeds throughout the holidays, but James himself said in an interview with ABS-CBN on December 31, 2019 that he would be spending New Year's Eve with Nadine in Rockwell, Makati.

So are James Reid and Nadine Lustre still together?

All signs point to yes, but until they speak up – or at least, appear on each other's Instagrams – we will never know for sure. – Rappler.com

Harvey Weinstein faces justice two years after #MeToo scandal erupted

NEW YORK, USA – Harvey Weinstein's high-profile sex crimes trial opens on Monday, January 6 more than two years after the scandal triggered the #MeToo movement  that led to the downfall of dozens of powerful men.

The disgraced movie mogul faces life in prison if convicted of predatory sexual assault charges by a New York state court, in what is expected to be a 6-week trial.

Almost 90 women, including Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow, have accused the 67-year-old of sexual misconduct since The New York Times detailed allegations against him in October 2017.

But Weinstein, once one of Hollywood's powerful people, is being tried on charges related to just two women, highlighting the difficulty of building cases around incidents going back years.

Former production assistant Mimi Haleyi alleges that the Pulp Fiction producer forcibly performed oral sex on her in his New York apartment in July 2006.

The second alleged victim is anonymous. She says Weinstein, the co-founder of Miramax Films, raped her in a New York hotel room in March 2013.

The indictment was amended in August to include testimony from The Sopranos actress Annabella Sciorra as the prosecution seeks to convince the jury that Weinstein engaged in a pattern of predatory sexual behavior.

A conviction would signal a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement in the fight against sexual harassment and abuse of power in Hollywood and beyond.

Since the movement emerged from a deluge of allegations against Weinstein, almost all men felled from their positions, be it in the world of entertainment or business, have escaped prosecution.

The only other trial on the horizon is that of R&B singer R. Kelly, who was charged last year with several assaults on young women, but allegations of sexual impropriety have dogged him for years.

American comedian Bill Cosby was sentenced to at least 3 years in prison in September 2018, although proceedings had started in late 2015, two years before the post-Weinstein surge of allegations.

Unlikely to testify

"It's a case that will be covered all (over) the world," lawyer Gloria Allred, who represents Haleyi and Sciorra, told AFP.

Justice James Burke dismissed attempts by the defense to block Sciorra, who says Weinstein raped her in the winter of 1993-94, from giving evidence as a corroborating witness.

The prosecution will summon 3 other alleged victims, including one who says she was raped by Weinstein in California in 2013. The other two allegations are unknown at this stage.

Weinstein himself is unlikely to testify.

His defense team has been trying to undermine the allegations of the two accusers on the charge sheet since long before the start of the trial.

They have produced emails and text messages which they say show that both remained in friendly contact with the accused for several months after the alleged events.

Known for his impatience and quick temper, Weinstein changed lawyers several times before settling on Donna Rotunno, a Chicago attorney who has successfully defended dozens of men accused of sexual assault and harassment.

She has said that her client will be exonerated.

Weinstein has always maintained that his sexual relationships were consensual but has apologized for behavior that he concedes "has caused a lot of pain."

He sparked an outcry just weeks before the trial by appearing indignant in an interview with the New York Post tabloid when he moaned that he should be recognized for "pioneering" women-led films.

"The jurors and the judge are supposed to ignore this. But we know very well that it is impossible," Joseph Cabosky, a strategic communications professor at the University of North Carolina, told AFP. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) on Friday, January 3, reminded the public that dancing to the national anthem is a violation of the flag law, a few days after a controversial video posted by Fil-Am Youtuber Bretman Rock in 2019 reappeared online.

The NHCP released the notice as a response to complaints "regarding a video uploaded on a social media platform showing a man dancing while the national anthem was being played." They are presumably referring to a video where Bretman, who is based in Hawaii, danced and twerked to "Lupang Hinirang."

Citing Republic Act No. 8491 or the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, the NHCP said that "dancing to the national anthem as shown in the video abovementioned, therefore constitutes a violation of the flag law."

The NHCP said that they issued the notice "to prevent future violations, in a similar manner, of the law."

The video, which was originally posted on Bretman's Instagram Stories, reappeared on YouTube towards the end of December, with many netizens calling out the influencer for disrespecting the national anthem.

However, some people pointed out that Bretman took the video down and apologized for it soon after it was posted.

User @andrengsam posted a screenshot of a chat where Bretman said he deleted the video, pointing out that it was posted in September and that the influencer "deleted it immediately and he apologized immediately."

Responding to the tweet, Bretman said "I can promise you it will never happen again, I take full responsibility and I truly am so sorry."

As of this writing, Bretman hasn't said anything else regarding the video, nor has he responded to NHCP's notice.

Bretman was born in the Philippines and migrated to Hawaii when he was 8. He was named "Beauty Influencer of 2019" at the E! People’s Choice Award. He has 13.9 million followers on Instagram, and 6.91 million subscribers to his YouTube channel. – Rappler.com

HAPPILY MARRIED. Coleen Garcia says she is ver much happy being a wife to Billy Crawford contrary to reports that she is not. Screenshot from Instagram/@coleen

MANILA, Philippines – Coleen Garcia said she was at her "happiest" as wife to singer Billy Crawford as she denied rumors sparked by an Instagram photo that, some observed, seemed to show her as unhappy.

On December 18, Billy shared a photo of him, Coleen, and their friends. One person wrote that Coleen seemed to have lost her her happy aura and glow because she married young. Billy debunked the statement, saying they are happy and okay.

Collen herself denied this is an interview after the press conference for the movie Mia on Friday, January 3, saying those who made the comment  apparently did not see her often "so they can only guess."

"Parang ang hirap din nang hindi nag-uupdate. (It's also hard also not to give updates) I don't know I just feel, like, I really needed this time of silence for myself, and I really needed to take a step back and reassess everything in my life," she said.

She added: "But it doesn't mean that I am not happy. Actually I really feel that I'm at my happiest right now. And Billy is really helping me with that."

Coleen also answered questions about Billy's lifestyle change. In November, the singer shared about losing weight and giving up alcohol after a year of not drinking.

"The weight wasn't a problem. But it became a side effect of everything I guess. A side product of quitting all the bad habits was losing the weight," she said.

"Iyon yung pinaka pinaka happiness talaga na makukuha ko, that I am able to influence my partner to be better and to do better, 'yung maging source of inspiration (That's the ultimate happiness that I can get, that I am able to influence my partner to be better and to do better, to become a source of inspiration)," she said.

Coleen is promoting the movie Mia in which she stars with Edgar Allan Guzman. The movie is directed by Veronica Velasco and opens in cinemas on January 15. – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA – More than two decades after anti-authoritarian rockers Rage Against the Machine headlined the first-ever Coachella festival, the rap metal group is returning to the California desert's main stage for a reunion  this spring.

The band's songs – heavy on social activism and leftist views – make them a fitting headliner for the 2020 festival that will take place over two weekends in early April, just as the Democratic presidential hopefuls head into the home stretch of their battle to take on Donald Trump.

Rage Against the Machine's Coachella dates on April 10 and April 17 are part of the band's reunion tour after an 8-year hiatus.

The famously elusive singer Frank Ocean and rapper Travis Scott round out this year's class of headliners for the sun-drenched trendsetting festival.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, hip-hop duo Run the Jewels, baroque pop star Lana Del Rey, and a slate of rising rappers including 21 Savage, Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, and Lil Uzi Vert will also perform.

Country-rap sensation Lil Nas X of "Old Town Road" fame is another addition to this year's Coachella, which draws hundreds of thousands of concertgoers to southern California and kicks off the influential festival circuit.

Singer-turned-composer Danny Elfman – who scored The Simpsons theme along with films like Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas – is also curiously featured prominently on the line-up. – Rappler.com
