Latest 'Star Wars' film gets worst reviews in decades

LOW RATING. Early critic reviews for the latest Star Wars installment paint the film as a failed finale to the franchise. Screenshot from trailer

LOS ANGELES, USA – The Rise of Skywalker was meant to provide a satisfying conclusion to 9 Star Wars films but for many critics, its aim was as wide of the mark as a stormtrooper in a blaster battle.

Director J.J. Abrams's return to the space saga has been slammed as unoriginal and slavishly pandering to the franchise's rabid core fanbase.

It has a score of 59% from around 200 critics on movies website Rotten Tomatoes – the worst of any live-action Star Wars episode since the panned prequel The Phantom Menace two decades ago.

The Los Angeles Times called it "an epic failure of nerve" with a "succession of cheap 'gotcha!' twists."

"In its anxiety not to offend, it comes off more like fan fiction than the creation of actual professional filmmakers," said Time magazine.

For The Hollywood Reporter, the movie's "more-is-more approach ultimately leaves one both bloated from too many courses and uncertain about some of the ingredients."

Many reviewers have compared it unfavorably to the previous installment, The Last Jedi (2017), now widely seen as a more experimental Star Wars film which critics enjoyed but which enraged a vocal minority of hardcore fans.

'Too cumbersome'

A few reviewers, honoring the balance that is a central tenet of the Jedi Order, pushed back with their own glowing appreciations, however.

Variety called it the "most elegant, emotionally rounded, and gratifying 'Star Wars' adventure" since 1980's The Empire Strikes Back, while the Daily Telegraph in London said the film "gives our heroes the swashbuckling, heart-rending ending they deserve."

A 3-star write-up in British newspaper The Guardian –noted that the "vast, hulking Star Destroyer of a franchise has become too cumbersome to pull off any genuinely nimble maneuvers, but at the same time, it never falls out of the sky."

Indiewire declared it "spectacular and uninspired at once."

The much-hyped film has been tipped by analysts to take $200-$225 million at domestic box offices this weekend, which would place it among the biggest openings in movie history.

"A massive opening weekend is in the cards irrespective of reviews or audience sentiment," said Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

Positive reviews are a "bonus" but the "true test" will come when the first fans get to see the film and form their own opinions, he said.

"The long term prospects will depend on solid word of mouth propelling the film to greater and greater heights worldwide week after week," he added.

'Through the roof'

Hollywood's iconic El Capitan theater, which is hosting a sold-out, back-to-back Star Wars marathon of all nine films culminating in the new release Thursday, said the reviews were not expected to dampen sky-high demand.

"Not really... it really is a love letter to the fans and the people who have stuck in there for these 40-some odd years to be able to see this film," said James Wood, the Disney-owned theater's director of special events and production.

The Rise of Skywalker had the longest list of people requesting to be notified when tickets went on sale of any movie in a blockbuster-filled year, added Wood.

The film opened in several markets Wednesday, December 18 including France, Germany and China, ahead of its arrival in US theaters on general release Friday, December 20.

French fan club Planete Star Wars leapt to the film's defense following its release there Wednesday.

"The task was far from easy and satisfying every fan would be impossible anyway," it said. "In any case, J.J. Abrams worked hard to give us the best possible conclusion to the saga and who knows... reunite the community?"

The New York Times had a less charitable view, declaring director Abrams "the most consistent B student in modern popular culture."

The film "is one of the best (in the franchise)... Also one of the worst," it concluded. "Perfectly middling. It all amounts to the same thing." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Harry Styles gave the internet an early Christmas present: his own cover of Lizzo's hit song "Juice."

Harry took on the Grammy nominee's song at the BBC Live Lounge wearing a pearl necklace, high-waisted trousers, suspenders, and a shirt with his name on it, giving new meaning to one of the song's most iconic lyrics: "No I'm not a snack at all, baby I'm the whole damn meal."

People also seemed to show appreciation for him not changing the lyrics to the song's bridge, which goes, "Somebody come get this man, I think he got lost in my DMs."

Lizzo, who was recently named TIME Magazine's Entertainer of the Year, seemed to approve of the cover, sharing the video on Twitter with the caption: "You know what this means right....?"

If Lizzo is hinting at a collab, then this cover will be the gift that keeps on giving.

Harry, who rose to fame with boy band One Direction, was at the BBC Live Lounge to promote his new solo album, Fine Line, which was released on December 13. The album is his second solo project, following Sign of the Times.– Rappler.com

NEW BOY. John Ambrose McClaren and Lara Jean Covey get close in 'To All The Boys: PS I Love You.' Photo courtesy of Netflix

MANILA, Philippines – The trailer of To All The Boys: PS I Love You was released on Thursday, December 19, and it is, as expected, full of kilig– but this time around, it's not just coming from Noah Centineo's floppy-haired smiley charm anymore.

In the trailer, Peter Kavinsky (Noah) is at his swoon-worthiest. Now that he and Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) are a real couple, the two have amped up the romance with romantic dinners, surprise gifts, and promises not to break each other's hearts.

But like any couple, the two also seem to go through some rough patches – which makes it tricky when the charming John Ambrose McClaren turns up. (FIRST LOOK: 'To All The Boys: PS I Still Love You')

Like Peter K, John Ambrose (Jordan Fisher) is one of the recipients of Lara Jean's old love letters – and he seems to be interested in what she had to say. With him in the picture, Lara may have to confront the possibility of being in love with two boys at once.

SENTENCED. American rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine received a two-year prison sentence on racketeering, firearms, and drug trafficking charges. Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images North America/AFP

NEW YORK, USA – He used the street cred of being in a gang to rocket to rap stardom, but then cooperated with federal prosecutors and testified against his former associates.

American rapper Tekashi69, or Tekashi 6ix9ine – real name, Daniel Hernandez – was sentenced Wednesday, December 18 to two years in federal prison on racketeering, firearms, and drug trafficking charges.

Hernandez, 23, got a relatively lenient sentence after agreeing to a plea deal that required him to take the stand against other members of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods.

It is nevertheless a stark reversal of fortune after he soared to fame following the release of his debut single "Gunmo" in late 2017.

In the video, he raps and dances in front of a building in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood with members of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, wearing trademark red bandanas.

Ever since West Coast rappers started using gang imagery in their videos in the 1990s, any association with street gangs has often boosted the credibility of a rising artist.

According to his attorney Lance Lazzaro, Hernandez – who was born in Brooklyn, and left school at age 15 – wanted to develop a "gangster persona in an effort to sell more music."

"Gunmo" quickly surpassed 100 million views on YouTube, and the single landed in the top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Tekashi69 was a bona fide star, and his popularity was fueled by his unique look – long, multicolored hair sometimes in braids, colored grills in his mouth, and hundreds of tattoos, including on his face.

But prosecutors said he did far more than cultivate a gangster image, and Hernandez was convicted on multiple counts of racketeering, weapons violations and drug trafficking.

"You were a central figure in a vicious and brutal gang," federal judge Paul Engelmayer said to the rapper during the sentencing hearing.

Hernandez used the gang – its name is inspired by its founding in 1993 at New York's infamous Rikers Island prison complex – to attack or rob those he perceived as rivals in the rap world.

But the gang also used him, tapping its new member for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Hernandez was indicted in November 2018 along with other gang members.

Feeling he had been manipulated by the Nine Treys, the rapper decided to cooperate with federal prosecutors – a collaboration that helped him avoid what could have been a life sentence.

Having already spent a year in prison, during which his videos have racked up several billion views on YouTube, Hernandez will likely be free sometime in 2020, and then serve out his probation.

"He's a target," Lazzaro told the court, expressing concerns that the young rapper could face reprisal attacks from the Nine Treys or another gang.

Tekashi69 doesn't seem all that worried – he just signed a new record deal with the music label 10K Projects. – Rappler.com

OUTCRY. J.K. Rowling stirs controversy online after a recent tweet about her anti-transgender beliefs. Photo by David Cheskin/Pool/AFP

MANILA, Philippines – Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling aired her controversial beliefs about the transgender community on Thursday, December 19, and stupefied fans are calling it ridiculous.

"Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security," Rowling tweeted.

"But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real? #IStandWithMaya#ThisIsNotADrill," she wrote.

Rowling's tweet was in support of UK researcher Maya Forstater, who was fired from the Centre for Global Development in March 2019 for her own anti-trans statements, stating that "people cannot change their biological sex."

After a London judge upheld her dismissal, calling her views on sex and gender "absolutist" and "incompatible with human dignity," Forstater tweeted her disbelief, emphasizing that "sex is a biological fact & is immutable. There are two sexes. Men are male. Women are female. It is impossible to change sex. These were until very recently understood as basic facts of life."

GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), an American non-government LGBTQ rights organization, said that Rowling's comments "put trans people at risk," when "trans men, trans women and non-binary people are not a threat."

"J.K. Rowling, whose books gave kids hope that they could work together to create a better world, has now aligned herself with an anti-science ideology that denies the basic humanity of people who are transgender,” GLAAD's head of talent Anthony Ramos said in a statement.

GLAAD reached out to Rowling's representatives for an "offline discussion," to which they declined.

Rowling has been called a #TERF activist on Twitter, following several "trans-exclusionary radical feminist" activists herself. She's also been called out for liking tweets that demeaned trans-women in the past. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) wouldn't be complete without at least one horror film on its line-up. This year, that spot is filled by Sunod.

The film, directed by Carlo Ledesma, became part of the festival's top 8 after (K)ampon was disqualified. It tells the story of a mother (Carmina Villaroel) who takes up a call center job after her daughter falls sick. Things take a turn for the freaky, however, when she takes a rather creepy phone call at work.

The film also stars Mylene Dizon, who plays the call center's mysterious boss, and JC Santos, who plays a manager who helps train Carmina's character.

Sunod is set to premiere in cinemas nationwide as part of the 2019 MMFF on December 25.

Ahead of the premiere, we talk to Mylene and JC, who tell us more about the film, the experience of being on the eerie set, and why audiences should watch it come Christmas.

MANILA, Philippines – Devon Sawa, the actor that made many a '90s kid swoon when he played Casper in 1995, is in the Philippines.

Devon took to Twitter on Thursday, December 19, to share that he was traveling from Los Angeles, California, to Cebu, Philippines.

On Friday, December 20, he then tweeted that he had arrived.

It's unclear what Devon is in the country for – although according to another one of his tweets, Jollibee is definitely on his agenda.

He also earlier tweeted that he would be bringing his wife and two kids, saying, "We can't wait to see your beautiful country."

Devon's performance in Casper may have been the moment pre-teen girls everywhere fell in love with him, but his career as an actor has gone on long after that. In the same year, he starred in the coming-of-age film Now and Then. He also appeared in the comedy horror Idle Hands in 1999, and horror film Final Destination in 2000, and was known for playing the title character in the music video for Eminem's "Stan."

He recently starred in The Fanatic, the directorial debut of Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, in which he plays an actor who is stalked by an obsessive fan played by John Travolta. – Rappler.com

'Star Wars' struggles in a country far, far away: China

CHINA PREMIERE. The latest Star Wars film struggled to woo Chinese movie-goers on its premiere day. Screenshot from trailer

BEIJING, CHINA – Jedi mind tricks don't work on China.

While Star Wars fans from around the world waited in line for days to catch The Rise of Skywalker, the sci-fi series has struggled to woo film-goers in the increasingly important Chinese market.

Special previews of the long-awaited Star Wars film in Beijing this week drew just a handful of fans.

Chen Tao is a rare superfan in a country where Friday's opening day pre-sales were just 12 million yuan ($1.7 million), Xinhua news agency said, a fraction of the 218 million yuan taken recently on release by a Chinese-made crime drama, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The 35-year-old Shanghai resident only became curious about the space saga by accident after stumbling across a pre-installed Star Wars video game on his first computer.

Chen now runs one of China's biggest online Star Wars fan groups, debating lightsaber physics on the online message board Zhihu and managing a Twitter-like Weibo account with 30,000 followers.

He loves the Star Wars world for its vast scale and rich detail that fans can piece together through movies, books and games.

"Its world is like a jigsaw-puzzle... which feels very magical to me, and inspires a desire to explore this universe," he said.

But Chen and his fellow fans are rare in China, where cinemagoers flock instead to see Marvel superheroes and domestic films.

The Last Jedi ranked number 47 at the box office in China in 2018, far behind Marvel's superhero film Avengers: Infinity War at number 6, according to Box Office Mojo.

Since buying Star Wars studio Lucasfilm in 2012, Disney has stepped up efforts to gain fans in the world's fastest-growing movie market.

In October, Disney and Tencent-owned e-book company China Literature announced they would be publishing the first-ever Star Wars novel written specifically for Chinese audiences featuring "Chinese-style expression."

"We will introduce interpersonal relations and other concepts from Chinese custom into Star Wars," a China Literature representative told AFP, without providing further details.

Empty screening

The made-for-China Star Wars novel will have to overcome significant obstacles.

A Beijing bar hosted a screening Tuesday of previous Star Wars films ahead of Friday's China release – but the special room was mostly empty.

The indifference could be explained by the fact that Chinese audiences were introduced to the series in 1999 with the prequel Episode 1 - The Phantom Menac" – a disappointment to original fans and panned by critics.

"When Star Wars was released worldwide in 1977 it was a real film revolution," said Steffi Noel, an analyst from Shanghai-based market research firm Daxue Consulting.

"Each new episode of Star Wars is linked to a craze, a nostalgia," Noel told AFP.

But most Chinese viewers never formed this nostalgic bond with the movies.

In 1977, as foreign audiences were introduced to George Lucas' Skywalker saga, China had just emerged from the chaotic Cultural Revolution and had little access to Western popular culture.

The 3 original films were only finally shown at a Shanghai film festival in 2015.

'Old technology'

By the time Chinese audiences were introduced to the franchise, "the technology seemed old," Fan Yunxin, from a Beijing-based science fiction reading group, told AFP.

"Space opera isn't really something Chinese people related to," Fan said, adding while she likes the films, she didn't know of any "hardcore" fans.

Alex Hu, a 24-year-old science fiction fan, said he was unimpressed with the visual effects.

"I would say a lot of fight scenes in Star Wars are similar," he said.

Chen said Chinese sci-fi fans tend to prefer "hard" science fiction that focuses on scientific theory and have high demands for a story's logical consistency, but Star Wars was more like a "Roman empire tale that had been moved into space."

When he first watched one of the films, he was amazed by how casually alien and human characters co-existed in the Star Wars universe, something he had never encountered before in a science fiction film.

Shanghai-based analyst Noel said Disney would need to rebrand Star Wars to sell the franchise in China.

"What they need to sell them now, is a new story," she said.

"It's not enough to include Chinese-style drawings or Chinese architectures." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Actress Janine Gutierrez has earned the ire of talent manager Lolit Solis for posting a comment on Senator Bong Revilla's TV comeback.

On Twitter on Wednesday, December 18, the actress retweeted the news of Revilla starring in the upcoming showAgimat ng Agila, saying, "Oh God."

On Friday, December 20, Lolit, who is Bong Revilla's talent manager, slammed Janine in a lengthy rant on Instagram, even calling the young actress "cruel."

"Siguro gusto ni Janine Gutierrez na mapansin ko siya Salve. The nerve na mag-negative comment siya sa TV comeback ni Bong Revilla," Lolit said. (Maybe Janine Gutierrez wants me to notice her. The nerve of her to make a negative comment on Bong Revilla's TV comeback.)

"How can she be so cruel for a second chance to a co actor like Bong without even thinking if not for the goodness of people she won't be where she is today," she added.

Lolit went on to say that Janine should be more understanding and respectful when giving her opinion, because her grandfather Christopher de Leon is friends with Bong.

"I respect what she feels, or her political beliefs, pero sana inisip niya more than anyone else, siya dapat ang mas maging magaan sa pagbibigay chance sa isang tao na gusto bumalik sa pinanggalingan niyang mundo (but she more than anyone else should have been more forgiving when it comes to giving a chance to people who want to return to the industry they came from)," she said.

Lolit continued to throw shade at Janine, saying, "Buti na lang at hindi siya naging box office queen na sana makatulong para sa career ni Bong, dahil wala pa naman ako narinig na naging blockbuster movie niya, or tv show na naging sobra ang taas ng rating, kaya hindi din siya makakatulong sa career ni Bong Revilla," she said.

(It's a good thing that she didn't become a box office queen who can help Bong's career, because as far as I know, she hasn't had a blockbuster movie or TV show that has a high rating, so she can't help Bong's career anyway.)

She ended with "a piece of advice" for Janine: "Sana maging maligaya ang lovelife mo para mas maging mabuti ang puso mo." (I wish you a happy love life so that your heart will be better.)

"Sayang, love pa naman kita, now takot na ako dahil baka maging judgemental at I am cleaner than you are attitude ka rin sa akin dahil sa mga nagawa kong pagkakamali, you will never give me a second chance," she said.

(It's a shame, I love you but now I'm afraid of you because you might be judgmental and give me that I-am-cleaner-than-you-are attitude because of what I've done wrong, you will never give me a second chance).

She ended by wishing Janine well and that her projects get ratings.

Siguro gusto ni Janine Gutierrez na mapansin ko siya Salve. The nerve na mag-negative comment siya sa TV comeback ni Bong Revilla. How can she be so cruel for a second chance to a co actor like Bong without even thinking if not for the goodness of people she won't be where she is today. I respect what she feels, or her political beliefs, pero sana inisip niya more than anyone else, siya dapat ang mas maging magaan sa pagbibigay chance sa isang tao na gusto bumalik sa pinanggalingan niyang mundo. Sayang, love pa naman kita, now takot na ako dahil baka maging judgemental at I am cleaner than you are attitude ka rin sa akin dahil sa mga nagawa kong pagkakamali, you will never give me a second chance. Hoping you will do well, kumita at mag rate mga ginagawa mong project. #classiclolita #takeitperminutemeganun #72naako

A post shared by LolitSolisOfficial (@akosilolitsolis) on

Janine's mother Lotlot rose to her daughter's defense on Instagram, saying that she initially didn't want Janine to enter showbiz precisely because it's a harsh industry.

"When you're in this industry puwede ka kaagad mahusgahan ng hindi ka natatanong kung bakit may nasabi ka o nagawa ka. Everyone else can give their opinions and share how they feel pero dahil artista ka may hangganan ang pagbibigay mo nun. Medyo unfair," she said.

(When you're in this industry, you can easily be judged without being asked why you said or did certain things. Everyone else can give their opinions and share how they feel but because you're an actor, there's a limit to what you can give. It's a bit unfair.)

View this post on Instagram

When she came to me after college and said, 'Mama gusto kong mag-try mag-artista', I asked her, 'Are you sure?' I asked her that question not because wala akong bilib sa kanya o sa kakayahan niya, but because I was afraid that this industry that I have grown up into can be very harsh sometimes. Everyone else can give their opinions and share how they feel pero dahil artista ka may hangganan ang pagbibigay mo nun. Medyo unfair. Hehehe! And because of all these reasons, half of me wanted to say no because as a mom ayoko siyang masaktan. I want to protect my daughter from all of that. Di baleng ako na lang ang sabihan ng masasakit, tawagin ng kung anu-ano huwag lang siya. On the other hand I can't stop her from what she wants for herself, for living her dreams, for proving herself and giving her a chance to go after that. What I saw in Janine's eyes and felt when we had that conversation that day is that she was willing to learn and "accept everything" that comes with being an artist and be the best version she can be in this profession that she has chosen. That's why I said yes. Buong puso kong maipagmamalaki that I have raised a daughter that is very respectful, level-headed, smart, humble and willing to take risks when needed. Bilang magulang andito lang ako nakatanaw and praying with all my heart that she will achieve everything that she has only prayed for. In the many years that I have also been in this industry at sa lahat ng nakita at napagdaanan ko, I have also learned to choose my battles, hindi lahat pinapatulan, sinasagot at pinapalaki. At the same time I have also learned that it's okay to say what you feel, to give your opinion and to be heard. Hindi kabawasan ng pagkatao yun lalo na kung nasa tama naman. These are all the things that I have learned. Babe, I love you. Just Continue with all the hard work and keep on swimming.

MANILA, Philippines – Despite the scathing tirade she received from talent manager Lolit Solis, Janine Gutierrez appeared unaffected, and fellow celebrities have tweeted their support for the actress.

Lolit posted a lengthy rant against Janine on Instagram, calling the actress cruel and making snide remarks about the actress' career.

The post that earned Lolit's ire? Two words: "Oh God," which Janine tweeted as a comment on Bong Revilla's TV comeback. Even after Lolit's post, Janine has not deleted the tweet.

On December 19, it was announced that Bong will be starring in an upcoming GMA-7 show Agimat ng Agila, which is set to premiere in 2020.

It will be Revilla's first TV project since he was detained for 4 years for plunder charges. In December 2018, he was acquitted of the charges by the Sandiganbayan, with the court ordering him to return P124.5 million to the Philippine treasury, which he has not done so.

Revilla won a Senate seat in the 2019 elections in May.

Lolit, who is Bong's talent manager, slammed Janine on Instagram on December 20. Janine hasn't addressed the post directly, but instead tweeted: "officially done with work for the year! so happy I get to work with amazing people and so happy that this year I've finally learned to say yes to only projects I really like and believe in - no matter what other people say. as it should be with everything else in life."

"PS THANK YOU," she said in a following tweet.

Personalities went online to support Janine.

Photographer BJ Pascual retweeted Janine's original post, saying "When people ask me why i love [Janine Gutierrez] so much."

Billie and Emma director Samantha Lee retweeted Janine's original post, and also shared an Inquirer story on Lolit's post, saying "Cruel is stealing millions of pesos from the people he was supposed to be serving," referring to Bong.

Spoken word artist Juan Miguel Severo thanked Janine for "speaking truth to power."

"Mas gumanda ka, mga 200% (you became more beautiful, by about 200%). And guys I wish you'd give her some love. Celebs and high profile individuals are dissuaded to get political. Those who do so despite need to know we got their back," he said.

Actor Ivan Dorschner also retweeted Janine, saying "no Mefenamic Acid for that headache."

Replying to her original tweet, musician Jim Paredes said "Be strong Janine. Trolls will hit you. Wag ka sanang matinag."

Also retweeting Janine's post, singer and twitter celebrity Frankie Pangilinan said "seconded."

Activist and Twitter personality Francis Baraan IV put Lolit on blast, saying "Janine just said 'Oh God' to the news of a Bong Revilla TV comeback, and you go full batshit crazy defending a plunderer, who has yet to return P100M to government?"

"You tell Janine: 'Love Thy Neighbor.' Eh, si Bong? Did you tell him to 'Thou shalt not steal?'" he added.

MANILA, Philippines – It's been 4 years since she became the 3rd Filipina to win Miss Universe in 2015 and Pia Wurtzbach continues to be loved by many.

On Saturday, December 21, Pia posted on Instagram two photos from the pageant and her homecoming, recalling those moments.

"December 20, 2015. Remember that day? The moment that changed my life forever and 4 years later, you're all still here. This post is for you and I am happy and grateful for each one of you," she told her followers.

Pia's win was memorable because not only did she break a 42-year drought for the Philippines, but there was also the mix-up when Steve Harvey mistakenly announced that Ariadna Gutierrez of Colombia won and Pia was 1st runner-up. Steve later corrected his mistake, announcing Pia as the real winner of the 2015 edition.

Since relinquishing the crown, Pia has become active in Philippine showbiz, acting and hosting. She currently hosts her own travel show Pia's Postcards.

The beauty queen also unveiled her own wax figure from Madame Tussauds in Hong Kong. – Rappler.com

SINGAPORE, Singapore– A brief kiss between two women in the new "Star Wars" movie was cut from the version released in Singapore, local media said.

"The Rise of Skywalker", the conclusion to the nine "Star Wars" films that stars Daisy Ridley, was released in the Asian city-state on Thursday, December 19.

The film contains a brief scene where two minor female characters share a kiss–– but the moment is omitted in the version screened in Singapore, according to Yahoo Lifestyle SEA. (READ: Your guide to 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker')

The news site reported on Friday, December 20, that the women were seen embracing but not kissing.

A spokesperson from Singapore's media regulatory agency told Yahoo and other local online media that a short scene had been cut from the release, but did not specify which one.

"Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker has been rated PG13 for theatrical release in Singapore," the spokesperson said.

"The applicant has omitted a brief scene which under the Film Classification Guidelines would require a higher rating."

The agency did not immediately respond to an enquiry from AFP.

Under the guidelines, films containing LGBT themes or content as a subplot may be restricted to viewers aged 18 and above, while films focusing on homosexuality may be hit with a 21-and-over age rating.

Although open support for gay rights has grown in recent years, official attitudes towards homosexuality are often highly conservative in Singapore.

Sex between men remains technically illegal under a colonial-era law, albeit one that is not actively enforced.

The scene in "Rise of Skywalker", the first same-sex kiss in the franchise's history, was hailed as historic by some, but the fleeting moment between two peripheral characters was criticised as tokenism by fans hoping for greater LGBT representation.

Disney did not immediately respond to an enquiry from AFP. – Rappler.com

The 38-year-old singer/actress plays the late Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin in the upcoming biopic, slated for an October 9, 2020 release.

Hudson was hand-picked by Franklin herself to play her in the Aretha-approved biopic.

The latest teaser gives us a sneak peek of Oscar-winning Hudson's captivating performance  – on stage, she is surrounded by sepia stage lights, singing a dreamy a capella version of Franklin hit "Respect."

As back-up voices chime in, sepia neon lights blast on behind Hudson, spelling respect in capital letters. Hudson powerfully continues to do the song justice as the teaser ends, telling audiences to "find out what it means."

The biopic, which covers Franklin's rise to stardom, is directed by Liesl Tommy. The drama co-stars Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Mary J. Blige, Audra McDonald, Heather Headley, Tituss Burgess, and Marc Maron.

Another film about the late star's life is set for May 2020, entitled Genius: Aretha, a National Geographic project with Cynthia Erivo as the lead.

Franklin passed away in August 2018 due to cancer.

The gospel, soul, and R&B vocal powerhouse influenced generations of female singers, from the late Whitney Houston to Beyonce. Some of her timeless hits include "Respect" (1967), "Natural Woman" (1968), and "I Say a Little Prayer" (1968). – Rappler.com
