MANILA, Philippines – Fans of Sandara Park and Nam Joo-Hyuk had their hallyu thirst satisfied as the two South Korean superstars visited Manila for the one-night only Penshoppe FanCon at Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, July 29.

Sandara, who rose to fame in Korea as a member of the now-disbanded girl group 2NE1, and Joo-Hyuk, best known for his roles in Korean dramas Weighlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and The Bride of Habaek, met with their fans wearing Penshoppe's pre-holiday collection.

Prior to finding fame in Korea, Sandara (now more popularly known as "Dara") was a local celebrity after joining and almost winning the reality-based talent competition Star Circle Quest.

Lucky fans were also able to interact with Dara and Joo-Hyuk onstage, and even luckier fans got to join the two as they re-enacted iconic scenes from their music videos and Korean dramas.

The show also featured special performances from DJ Tom Taus, Keiko Necesario, and IV of Spades. Penshoppe's local brand ambassadors — Khalil Ramos, Maris Racal, Ronnie Alonte, and Loisa Andalio — also performed at the event.

Kris did not say who she was playing but online movie databse IMBD lists her as playing the role of "Princess Intan." Kris had previously said that she would play a pricess.

In 2017, Kris revealed that she went to Hollywood to sign a contract for a movie. In June, she shared photos of herself with the cast.

Kris earlier said there were a few roadblocks to her presence in the film's world premiere. Aside from her health issues, she said a major brand she's endorsing needs to give her the go signal since the premiere overlaps with her commitments to them.

MANILA, Philippines – Sporty and buff in real life, we’ve seen Korean actor Nam Joo-Hyuk (and his thirst-trap abs) as a talented swimmer in the hit drama Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, and then as a water god for The Bride of Habaek.

But when asked for his dream role, Joo-Hyuk already has something else in mind: a couch potato.

Joo-Hyuk gave this answer on Sunday, July 29 during a press conference before he met with his fans at the Penshoppe FanCon at the Mall of Asia Arena

Asked for a character he still wants to play, Joo-Hyuk said in Korean that his dream role is to be a “very normal couch potato who doesn’t do anything with his life.”

Joo-Hyuk later on said that he would like to "accept a role that highlights a different side of him, and maybe try romantic comedy." He also said that he’d like to work with Sandara Park for a romantic comedy and that he’s “very confident that he can make her laugh everyday.”

Joo-Hyuk came with Sandara, who is also managed by YG Entertainment, to Manila this year for the FanCon.

Favorite role so far

Joo-Hyuk said he chooses his roles very carefully and reads everything before accepting them. But if he were to choose his favorite, Joo-Hyuk said it would be his role in his latest drama, The Bride of Habaek.

The young actor also said that he really looks up to Jo In Sung, known for his roles in Memories of Bali and A Frozen Flower. Joo-Hyuk recently had the chance to work with him in the film ‘The Great Battle,’ and said that he really “watched his every move when they were working together” because he feels like “there were a lot of thing he could learn from him.”

Joo-Hyuk also said that “it would be an honor to work with Filipino actors and projects, if given the chance.” Rappler.com

The Linggo ng Wika performance that ‘changed’ Sandara Park’s life

LINGGO NG WIKA. Dara says a performance for Linggo ng Wika in highschool "changed" her life and helped her be where she is now. Photo courtesy of Penshoppe

MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos are witness to Sandara Park’s rise to fame.

We got to know her as the self-proclaimed "krung krung" who joined and almost won the Filipino talent search TV show, Star Circle Quest. We then watched her rise to K-pop fame when she became part of the Korean girl group 2NE1.

But during a press conference on Sunday, July 29 just before she met with fans for Penshoppe’s 2018 FanCon, Sandara, or now more popularly known as Dara, said that her career as a singer started way earlier in life: During a high school Linggo ng Wika (Filipino Language Week) performance.

Dara said that she used to be a “super shy type.” During high school however, she was made to sing for Linggo ng Wika. Dara describe it as “the day that changed my life.”

“After that [her performance], my friends told me, “OMG, you know how to sing, you have a good voice. Nagkaroon na ako ng confidence (It gave me confidence), and that brought me here,” she said.

Growing up in the Philippines, it’s no secret that Filipinos are close to Dara’s heart.

Dara, during the press conference, said that “Pinoys makes me proud.”

She said that her Korean friends are always surprised to see how Filipinos are always so friendly and happy singing.

“But now, ganun na rin sila (But they’re now also like that). They told me, ‘I know why you’re acting like that. When we come to the Philippines and got to know the Filipino culture.’ And they really loved it,” Dara added.

Dara post-2NE1

Dara also said that she’s looking forward to more TV shows, something she wasn’t allowed to do a lot as part of their strategy, when she was still with the now-disbanded 2NE1.

“I would love to try everything. Ngayon (now), I’m doing a beauty show. A traveling show. Maybe, someday, I can try a cooking show, but 'di ako marunong magluto (but I don’t know how to cook),” Dara said.

Asked for her dream projects in the Philippines, Dara said that she’d like to be in a movie, revealing that her management is already in talks for a local movie with her.

“I’m just waiting for the right timing. Alam ko, yung leading man may ibang project. Busy daw. And then, when he was okay, ako naman ang busy. So yung timing, that’s the hardest part,” she said.

(I’m just waiting for the right timing. What I know is that the leading mean had another project. He was busy. And when he became free, I became busy. So the timing in the hardest part.)

WORKING TOGETHER. Both Sandara Park and Nam Joo-Hyuk said that they'd love to work together in a drama. Photo courtesy of Penshoppe.

Working with Nam Joo-Hyuk

Dara came to Manila with Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo actor Nam Joo-Hyuk for the Penshoppe FanCon, and during the press conference, Dara said that working with Joo-Hyuk has always been something she wanted to do.

In fact, Dara said it was her who recommended to a friend in Penshoppe to get Joo-Hyuk as brand ambassador. “Nagulat ako na one day, tada (I was surprised because one day, here's here)! I’m very happy to work with him,”

Dara, however, said that she’d be happier if she can work with him for a movie or drama.

I thought medyo snob siya. Ganun lang image niya, kasi nga ‘di ba guwapo, pero he’s really nice, friendly. So I [want] to work with him,” Dara said. (I thought he was a snob, his image is like that because he’s handsome. But he’s actually really nice and friendly. So I want to work with him.)

The two both played roles for Cheese in the Trap, but Dara was part of the film version while Joo-Hyuk was in the TV series. “Hindi kami sabay. So sana next time, sabay na kami,” she said. (We weren’t together. So next time, hopefully we’d be together.)

For his part, Joo Hyuk said that he’d also love to work with Dara for a romantic comedy and even said in Korean that he’s “very confident he can make her laugh everyday.”

INAPPOPRIATE. Netizens callout fans who were seen "inappropriately" touching Korean actor Nam Joo-Hyuk during the Penshoppe FanCon.

MANILA, Philippines – Fans of Korean actor Nam Joo-Hyuk expressed their anger online against fellow Filipino fans who were seen on video “inappropriately” touching him onstage at the Penshoppe FanCon on Sunday, July 29 at the Mall of Asia-Arena in Pasay City.

Clips from the Penshoppe livestream that were posted online showed fans touching, hugging, and even pulling an unguarded Joo-Hyuk when they were allowed to come onstage for a photo opportunity with him.

Hosts had to step in and remind the fans not to touch Joo-Hyuk and to “respect his personal space.”

Fans still clinged on a visibly uncomfortable Joo-Hyuk, who still took the photo with them.

MANILA, Philippines – Singer, songwriter, and actor Ogie Alcasid returns to the big screen via the movie Kuya Wes, an entry to the 2018 Cinemalaya Festival.

Ogie Alcasid is a very busy man these days. Aside from his regular hosting duties, he has an upcoming concert celebrating 30 years in the business, and there's his latest venture —  as one of the producers of Kuya Wes.

Kuya Wes is Ogie's 38th film, his first foray into the indie scene, and his first as a producer. The film is a collaboration with Alcasid’s own A-Team Productions with Awkward Penguin, and Spring Films.

“When I read this one (referring to the Kuya Wes script), di ko mabitawan, tawa ako nang tawa. At the same time, naiiyak ako inside.” ( I could not let go of the script, I was laughing non-stop. At the same time, I was crying inside)

He added that it was the combination of elements – witty dialogue, punchlines – basically, a well written script that managed to tug at his heart strings.

Clearly impressed with the story, he immediately agreed to do the film and met with Director James Robin Mayo (The Chanters, Anatomiya ng Pag-ibig, Kiko Boksingero).

James said that he was shocked that an actor of Ogie’s caliber would say yes so quickly.

As budget constraints were looming in the horizon, Ogie was determined that the movie see the light of day. He approached fellow actor, Piolo Pascual, who is also a movie producer.

“‘PJ,’ sabi ko,’meron akong nabasa kasing script, eh baka gusto mong i-produce.’ At sabi ko ‘ kahit wag mo na akong bayaran, gawin mo lang.’ Sabi niya,’Sige Kuya, kung okay sa iyo, babasahin ko.’ Wala na akong narinig sa kanya until after 3 or 4 months. Nakita ko si Ericson [Raymundo of Spring Films] sa ASAP, tapos sabi nya,’Hey we’ll be doing your film!’ Sabi ko ‘Huh? Talaga? Okay yun ah!’ Tapos kinausap ko si Piolo, sabi ko ,‘O,sabi ni Ericson…’ ‘Oo, pero hati tayo.’"

(I told PJ, I read a script and you might want to produce it. I even told him not to pay me a talent fee for it for as long as he would do it. He said 'okay kuya, if it's okay with you, I'll read it. I did not hear from him until after 3 or 4 months. I saw Ericson (Raymundo of Spring Films) in ASAP and he then told me 'hey, we'll be doing your film. I said huh? Really. That's great. And then I talked to Piolo about it.)

Lucky for us,the project was given the green light and what we have now is Kuya Wes.

Ogie couldn’t help but express his excitement because of the public’s response to the movie and its trailer. He also shared a bit of the learnings as a first time actor-producer, such as giving full trust in the director’s vision. He said he enjoyed the collaboration.

Kuya Wes

Kuya Wes tells us the story of a money remittance center employee (Alcasid) who goes about his daily routine. Things start to shake up at Western Remittance when he meets Erika (Ina Raymundo), a regular customer of the remittance center whom he begins falling for.

While he gains the attention and appreciation that he has never felt before, how will he deal when he finds out that everything is temporary?

Aside from Ogie and Ina, rounding out the cast are comedienne Moi Bein, Alex Medina, and Karen Gaerlan, whose roles also give the movie depth and color.

The haunting “Waltz of Four Left Feet” by Shirebound and Busking serves as the film’s official soundtrack.

Kuya Wes will formally be shown starting August 4 at the Cultural Center of The Philippines (CCP) with its gala screening on August 6 at the CCP Main Theater. The film will also be shown in select Ayala Cinemas. – Rappler.com

8 things we learned about Sandara, Nam Joo-hyuk during their PH visit

MANILA, Philippines – July 29 was a day to remember for fans of Korean stars Sandara Park, aka Dara, and Nam Joo-hyuk.

Not only did they get to see their idols in person at Penshoppe’s 2018 FanCon, some even got to join Dara and Joo-hyuk onstage and be their their leading men and ladies, at least for a few minutes.

Although the two stayed in the country for less than three days, Dara and Joo-hyuk had been very busy here, meeting with fans and entertaining questions from the media.

Here are a few things we’ve learned from the two during their visit to the country:

Dara and Joo-hyuk really want to work with each other

Dara, during their press conference before the fan meet, repeatedly said that she really likes working with Joo-hyuk. She admitted that she had told one of her close friend from Penshoppe to try getting Joo-hyuk, who is also managed by YG Entertainment, as an ambassador.

Nagulat ako na one day, tada! I’m very happy to work with him,” she said.

Dara also said that she’d be happier if she would get the chance to work with him in a drama or a movie.

When asked again later on if there’s any actor she’d like to work with, Dara once again said it’s Joo-hyuk. “I thought medyo snob siya (I thought he was a snob)…. but he’s really nice, friendly. So I [want] to work with him.”

When Joo-hyuk was asked the same question, he said that he wants to do a romantic comedy with Dara and that he’s “very confident that he can make her laugh everyday.”

Sandara Park likes ‘simple’ fashion while Joo-hyuk just wears whatever he can grab

When she was in 2NE1, Dara said she really liked colorful clothes and outfits with “tusok-tusok (spikes).” But as she grew older and transitioned into being an actress, she started wearing simpler clothes. “Now, the [simpler], the better."

Lately, Dara said that it has been hotter in Korea than the Philippines, and so they’re wearing minimal clothing. “Kaya hindi kami nagsusuot ng damit (That's why we skip the clothes),” Dara joked.

Dara said that she likes to wear one big t-shirt like a dress. “I can just wear this, and slippers or sneakers, that’s it. And you can still look good. Better with cap. No makeup. Swag.”

Dara also prefers to go “colorful and fresh” during summer and “chick and sexy” during winter.

Joo-hyuk, meanwhile, is a little more laid back when it comes to fashion. According to him, he doesn’t really plan his OOTDs, so he only wears whatever he can grab at home.

He said that his go-to fashion has always been just jeans or joggers, and shirt. If it’s winter, it’s long sleeves to keep him warm.

Asked about his fashion rules, Joo-hyuk said it’s to always just “double check everything,” like whether he’s wearing the wrong side of his shirt, or if he’s not wearing something he should be.

What’s his one must-have fashion item? A plain white shirt.

Joo-hyuk’s dream role is a ‘couch potato’

We all know that Joo-hyuk is sporty and active in real life, but when asked about the character he still wants to play, Joo-hyuk said that he wants to be a “very normal couch potato who doesn’t do anything with his life.”

Dara’s singing career started in a Linggo ng Wika performance when she was young

Dara’s rise to stardom has been a long and difficult road, but her journey actually started even before she joined the Filipino TV show Star Circle Quest: During a Linggo ng Wika performance when she was young.

Dara said that she used to be a “super shy type.” But she was made to sing for Linggo ng Wika when she was young, describing it as “the day that changed my life.”

“After that [her performance], my friends told me, “OMG, you know how to sing, you have a good voice. Nagkaroon na ako ng confidence (It gave me confidence), and that brought me here,” she said.

Growing up in Busan made Joo-hyuk so 'chill'

Joo-hyuk said that he think’s he's so chill now as a person because he grew up in Busan, surrounded by the beach. Joo-hyuk said one of his fondest memories is just going around with his friends as a kid, and jumping and swimming without wearing anything.

Dara once wore an “embarrassing” dress to a date

Asked for the ideal outfit to wear to a date, Dara once again suggested to go simple. She also revealed she had once went on a Valentines date wearing an “embarrassing” red dress with a ribbon. “Parang ako yung gift,” she said (It’s like I’m the gift). “Nakakahiya pero it happened.” (It’s embarrassing but it really happened.)

Dara said the best outfit to wear on a date would be just a t-shirt and jeans. “Para bagay kayo. Para di OA. That was my mistake.” (So you’d look good together. So it’s not too much.)

A local movie featuring Dara is in the works

Dara also revealed during the press conference that her management is in talks for a local movie featuring her.

“I’m just waiting for the right timing. Alam ko, yung leading man may ibang project. Busy daw. And then, when he was okay, ako naman ang busy. So yung timing, that’s the hardest part,” she said.

UNITE FOR JAMES GUNN. The cast of 'Guardians of the Galaxy' call on for their director James Gunn to return to the film after being fired by Disney. Photo from Disney.

MANILA, Philippines – The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy on Monday, July 30, took to social media to call for the reinstatement of James Gunn, the director of the third movie under the franchise.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel signed an open letter calling for Gunn's return as director of Volume 3, set for release in 2020. Other major cast members signed the letter, including Sean Gunn, the director's younger brother.

The cast members said they "fully support" Gunn and noted it took them 10 days to "think, pray, listen, and discuss" following the director's abrupt firing from his post. Gunn was sacked over offensive tweets made nearly a decade ago.

"We cannot let this moment pass without expressing our love, support, and gratitude to James. We are not here to defend his jokes of many years ago but rather to share our experience having spent many years together on the set making Guardians 1 and 2," they said.

"The character he has shown in the way of his firing is consistent with the man he was every day on set, and his apology, now and from years ago when first addressing these remarks, we believe is from the heart, a heart we all know, trust, and love. In casting each of us to help him tell the story of misfits who find redemption, he changed our lives forever. We believe the theme of redemption has never been more relevant than now," they said.

Over a week ago, Walt Disney Studios announced it had fired Gunn as director of the latest Guardians of the Galaxy film.

"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him," said Allan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios in a statement announcing the director had been sacked.

Gunn has since deleted his Twitter account, saying he was a completely different person from the one who made the offensive remarks.

A petition for Gunn to be reinstated as director has since been launched, with more than 240,000 signatures compiled. – Rappler.com

STELLAR LINEUP. Lorde, Miguel, SZA, and Eric Nam are just some of the acts included in the 2018 edition of the Jakarta-based music festival, We The Fest. All photos by Paolo Abad/Rappler

JAKARTA, Indonesia – How on earth did Jakarta-based summer festival We The Fest manage to bring together several of today’s biggest pop acts?

It seemed too good to be true, yet included in this year’s lineup were heavy-hitting, globally renowned names: Lorde, SZA, Vince Staples, Miguel, James Bay, Albert Hammond Jr, Honne, alt-J, ODESZA, The Neighborhood, Eric Nam and more – luring us to book a flight to the Indonesian capital.

The rest of the billing wasn’t any less stellar. The festival featured regional and local acts who played on the main stage and two secondary stages. They proved to be pleasant discoveries across genres that spanned the gamut of psych rock to neo soul – possibly any genre you could name.

Over the weekend of July 20 to 22, Jakarta International Expo hosted the 2018 edition. In spite of Jakarta’s sweltering climate, We The Fest was a neat, polished, and relatively comfortable affair (with great food and beverage options!) that left us to just enjoy the music without a hitch.

We take a look back at the headliners’ performances – mostly on the main stage – during that weekend in Jakarta:

Lorde

“This is the ‘Talk About Your Feelings Show.’ This is the ‘Get Emotional Show’,” Lorde said, describing her own Jakarta set.

Even as a nearby side stage’s live sound clashed with hers, the Kiwi singer delivered a powerful set that wasn’t just bops and jams. Each song she played for Jakarta was packed with an emotional punch, making her show more than a spectacle: it was cathartic and memorable as imaginable.

As she closed her performance with “Green Light,” she urged the crowd to jump and dance, saying: “I need you with me right now. All of that joy, all of that pain – I need it in your fingertips and in your feet.” Jakarta followed suit, singing along triumphantly. SZA

SZA closed this year’s We The Fest with a bang – her performance turned out to be a finale that exceeded expectations.

Following headlines about the neo soul/R&B singer’s vocal cord woes earlier this year, and there were still worrying traces of this. But SZA ran through most of her debut studio album, Ctrl, proving to be a captivating live performer and a warm character as well, as she bantered in between crowd favorites such as “Doves in the Wind,” “Weekend,” and “Love Galore.”

Miguel

Miguel’s smooth vocals and confident stage presence defined his We The Fest set. He was suave and pitch-perfect.

“[My parents] sent me here to rock your f*cking world,” he told us at one point, making the Jakarta crowd go nuts over him from start (“Criminal”) to finish (“Pineapple Skies”).

He was also a tad rebellious, revealing that he was told not to perform “Do You” (which mentions drugs), but did so anyway, preambling with a short exhortation to be a little unconventional: “My parents always told me to do everything that I believed in – to never let anyone push me to conform to the ideals of what is normal because what the f*ck is normal anyway?”

Vince Staples

Vince Staples had commanded the Coachella main stage earlier this year, and with his electric 2017 album, Big Fish Theory, the Californian rapper had some substantial hype preceding his Jakarta debut.

His Day 3 set was a little underrated in terms of crowd size, but the festivalgoers that were there were in for a treat as they experienced his slick and scathing bars,  performed in such an electrifying manner, with bangers like “Big Fish,” “Get the F*ck Off My Dick,” and “Yeah Right.”

Eric Nam

Korean-American pop star Eric Nam performed at the cavernous air-conditioned This Stage is Banañas on the festival’s second day, but boy, did he turn up the heat inside with throngs of his fans screaming “ Oppa” as he performed flanked by backup dancers.

James Bay

With Days 2 and 3 of the festival leaning toward pop and hip-hop, Day 1 was dedicated to the rock ’n’ roll side of the sonic spectrum.

English singer-songwriter James Bay performed the penultimate set of Day 1, crooning and strumming through tunes like the rousing “Pink Lemonade” to the somber “Let It Go.”

Honne

Honne was an obvious Jakarta favorite, with an overflowing crowd in the main stage area and a resounding sing-along session that ensued throughout their set. James Hatcher and Andy Clutterbuck, who compose the English duo, gave Jakarta what it wanted, even if they had already performed in the Indonesian metropolis before.

The Neighborhood

Although The Neighborhood’s energy paled in comparison to the more intense acts that played later on Day 3, their slick R&B and electropop-infused brand of rock could be considered a welcome prelude to the last 3 main stage performers.

The Californian 5-piece even played their mega-hit “Sweater Weather,” a total treat for the main stage crowd.

Albert Hammond Jr

Albert Hammond Jr, best known as a guitarist for The Strokes, didn’t need to sneak a Strokes cover or two into his set to play one of the most memorable opening day sets at We The Fest. As a solo act accompanied by his touring band, he was nothing short of an exhilarating performer.

At one point, he even took the bouncers by surprise when he dove right into the VIP pit and ran across the space in the middle of the crowd, interacting with his fans.

alt-J

British rock trio alt-J, composed of Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton, and Thom Green has never been your ordinary rock band with their distinct and eclectic sound.

These lads from Leeds also put on a show that was extraordinary and mesmerizing, both musically and visually. Hands down, their stage design was the best in this year’s festival. (IN PHOTOS: alt-J live in Manila)

Nick Murphy (FKA Chet Faker)

Nick Murphy (formerly known by his stage name Chet Faker), with his soulful take on electronic pop, played a set sandwiched in between two rock acts, but with his Thom Yorke-esque croon, he was still a perfect fit.

While newer tunes like “Forget About Me” proved to be earworms, fresh renditions of his “classic” songs such as “Gold” and “1998,” which were made under his erstwhile moniker, thrilled the crowd.

ODESZA

Electronic music duo ODESZA managed an awesome feat: fusing sight and sound into a huge spectacle. Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight coupled their high-octane bangers with stunning backdrop visuals, and although Lorde was a tough act to follow on Day 2, they delivered quite phenomenally.

Ups and downs

As each festival day began mid-afternoon, there were unfortunate clashes between the top-tier acts on the bill and other must-see acts in the indoor stage: for example, Honne and Eric Nam, Lorde and Majid Jordan, and a few more. While it’s possible to split one’s time between these artists, this would mean sacrificing prime spots – and as in real estate, what matters is location, location, location.

Sometimes, pleasant surprises occur, too. When there’s free time, or while waiting for your favorite artist’s set, you could catch a performance from one of the local acts. It’s great to broaden your musical horizons, especially when it’s music coming from neighboring countries.

MANILA, Philippines – Kris Aquino remembered her late mom Cory by posting a touching message on the ocassion of her 9th death anniversary Wednesday, August 1.

Cory, the first woman president, died on August 1, 2009 after battling colon cancer.

On Instagram, Kris shared how she felt "eerily" about the similar times and dates when her mom and dad died. Her father, the late senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr was assassinated on August 21, 1983.

She also fondly recalled the time Cory would tease her, saying Kris needed a male version of her mom to calm her.

"Because of what I saw in you, I can still believe that TRUE, COMMITTED and ENDURING LOVE is REAL because Dad was your 1st, last, and only love... You’d tease me that my perfect match would be a male Cory for a lifetime partner because you said I was the female Ninoy, and only a male version of you would understand the passionate tigas ulo/bawal sumuko/kakayanin lahat (stubborn and will do everything)  in me... Mom, malabo na sigurong mangyari pa yun (I think that won't happen anymore)," she said.

She also wrote Cory would have been proud to see her grandsons Josh and Bimby today. Kris said that the values Cory instilled in them makes her determined to be the best mother to her two kids.

"I don’t doubt you’re proud of all I achieved. But I hope from heaven you’re seeing pinipilit & pinagsisikapan kong maging (that I am trying and forcing myself to be) 'good mom' because – I had the best  role model in you.

"You know August has always been tough for us – but you instilled dignity and strength in all your children. So maybe, hopefully you no longer worry about us."

FDCP chairperson Liza Diño-Seguerra said that's precisely why she wanted films that have been screened before to be part of the festival. "I think they deserve to be seen by a wider audience. For me at the end of the day, we have to continuously present diversity sa audience natin (to our audience)," she said.

She also also said that while viewers are used to seeing more commercial films, the screening of the 6 films will give the audience a chance to see other films that maybe different for them.

The Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino will August 15 to 21. A  Pista at the Park Grand Fans Day and All-Star Caravan will be happening at the Quezon Memorial Circle on August 11 with the PPP Opening Night on August 13. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Singer-songwriters who are hoping to be the next big thing in OPM – and beyond – still have a shot at learning from top local and international musicians as Elements Music Camp extends its deadline for applications to August 3.

The camp is open to unsigned Filipino musicians who have had years of experience in the music industry and want to continue to hone their craft. Applicants must prepare one to two songs in English, one to two live videos of the submitted songs, and Mp3 file of each song, as well as its lyrics.

Elements Music Camp was started by Ryan Cayabyab, Julio Sy Jr, and Twinky Lagdameo in an effort to hone the talents of the next generation of original singer-songwriters.

The camp allows participants to learn the craft under the mentorship of some of OPM’s most acclaimed songwriters – with past mentors including Ebe Dancel, Armi Millare, Gabby Alipe, Raimund Marasigan, Ogie Alcasid, and Noel Cabangon.

OPM rising stars including Bullet Dumas, Ben & Ben, and Moira dela Torre are all graduates of the camp.

NEW YORK, USA – Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron are to lead an all-star cast in a new movie about former Fox News hosts Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly, who spoke up about sexual harassment at the network before the #MeToo movement  kicked off.

Kidman is to play Carlson, the Stanford and Oxford-educated former Miss America and prominent Fox News anchor who accused the late media mogul Roger Ailes of sexual harassment, the entertainment press reported.

"I hope the true story is depicted. The most important thing is that so many more women are now believed and have been given a voice," Carlson tweeted Wednesday, August 1, linking to a Variety story that revealed Kidman's role.

Variety said Theron would play Kelly, who shot to fame for clashing with Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election campaign, and who now fronts a morning magazine show on rival network NBC.

Rising Australian star Margot Robbie is also in talks to join the cast, The Hollywood Reporter said. A spokeswoman for the production house confirmed that the film was about the women of Fox News and currently untitled.

Charles Randolph, who won an Oscar for 2015 The Big Short about the housing bubble that led to the 2008 financial crash, is also on board, reports said.

Ailes, who co-founded Fox News and helped redraw conservative American politics, was forced to resign in July 2016 in a blaze of sexual harassment allegations and lawsuit from Carlson.

He denied all the allegations and died less than a year later, in May 2017.

Under Ailes' leadership, Fox became America's most watched cable news channel, home to key conservative political commentators. He also advised Republican presidents from Richard Nixon to Ronald Reagan, and was close to Trump.

Carlson claimed she was sacked for refusing his advances.

The lawsuit opened the gates to a flood of allegations from women, including Kelly, who accused him of groping them or making unwanted advances -- and sought to expose what they called a culture of misogyny at the network.

Ailes' downfall pre-dated the #MeToo reckoning against sexual harassment that was sparked by sexual misconduct allegations against Hollywood titan Harvey Weinstein and seen a litany of powerful men lose their jobs. – Rappler.com

Nicki Minaj hunting for Tracy Chapman as album waits

NEW YORK, USA – Rapper Nicki Minaj said Wednesday, August 1,  that she is pushing back her new album as she desperately seeks to reach Tracy Chapman to clear a sample.

Chapman, the deep-voiced and intensely private folk singer behind socially conscious songs such as the 1988 classic "Fast Car," has pulled off the increasingly rare feat of being nowhere to be found online as Minaj pleaded via her 20 million followers each on Instagram and Twitter.

In a tweet this week that she later deleted, Minaj wrote that a song on her upcoming album, "Queen," features one of "the greatest rappers of all time" but that she had "no clue it sampled the legend #TracyChapman."

Minaj, whose album will be her first in 4 years, proceeded to poll her followers to ask whether she should delete the track or delay the album.

The latter option apparently won. Writing on her Apple Music account on Thursday, Minaj said the album would come out August 17. She earlier had announced it for June and then pushed it back to August 10.

Minaj also posted a text conversation conducted through a fan in which Chapman is offered $2 million to grant permission in time for an August 10 release.

Chapman, 54, has said that she has no desire to spend time on social media.

A number of fans voiced offense at Minaj's full-court push.

"I can't believe that this is the kind of disrespect that Tracy Chapman is getting for merely not replying!!" tweeted one user with the handle @nasque.

Minaj did not specify the rapper behind the supposedly obscure Chapman sample but her praiseworthy tone led fans to think she was referring to Eminem. The two rappers have suggested in flirtatious public remarks that they may be romantically involved.

Chris Brown, the singer and rapper controversial over his history of domestic violence, sampled "Fast Car" in his song "Run Away."

Minaj, one of the top women in hip-hop, has already released 3 songs from "Queen" including "Bed," a tropically infused, sexually charged duet with pop singer Ariana Grande, and "Chun-Li," a nod to Asian martial arts and video-game culture. – Rappler.com
