MANILA, Philippines – Soon after the death of Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, many stars and personalities took to social media to mourn her death.

Santiago died on Thursday, September 29. She was 71 years old.

She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2014, but said in 2015 that her cancer had been "licked." The next year, Santiago ran for presidency in the 2016 elections, but lost to current president Rodrigo Duterte.

Heart Evangelista mourned the loss of Santiago on Instagram, saying, "I love you my super hero... I will miss you my Cleopatra... I will be the luckiest girl in history to have you as my second mom. Heart's mom, Ceciilia Ongpauco, was close to Santiago, and the senator was the one to introduce Heart and her husband senator Chiz Escudero.

Chiz ran for vice president in the 2016 elections, but under a different political party from Santiago. Heart supported her husband, while her mom supported Santiago, but Heart assured that her family and the late senator had no problems with the situation.

Heart also recalled her memories with Santiago, saying that Santiago would teach her the "serious Einstein subjects" and take care of her when she wasn't feeling well.

MANILA, Philippines – ALV Talent Circuit has released a statement on Tim Yap's drug test results, saying that they were negative.

ALV manages Tim, along with many other stars like Carla Abellana, Billy Crawford, Grace Lee, and Jay R.

In a message sent to Rappler on Thursday, September 29, ALV said that Tim Yap, a TV host and club owner, was tested two separate times for drugs, once on August 19 and again on September 26.

The tests were taken at a medical lab licensed by the Department of Health (DDOH) and accredited with the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB).

"Based on the negative results of these tests, we hope to finally put to rest all speculations and reaffirm Tim’s untarnished reputation and good moral standing," said ALV.

"Moreover, he has reiterated his full support for the government’s intensive anti-drug campaign, and encourages his fellow celebrities to do the same."

When news that the Philippine National Police (PNP) had a list of alleged celebrity drug users and pushers, there were speculations that he was on the list.

Tim has since spoken up about those rumors, denying that he supplies drugs to the people who go to his bars – Tim co-owns clubs like Valkyrie, Aracama, Prive and Gramercy – or the parties he hosts.

"Hindi po porke't nandoon ako sa party scene, hindi porke't nasa bars ako at sa events, eh ako po'y nagsu-supply. Hindi po totoo ito. For me, napakasakit, napaka-unfair. It's something that na hindi ko inakalang ever ma-a-attach sa pangalan ko," he said to dzBB, according to GMA News Online.

(Just because I'm in the party scene, just because I'm at bars and events, it doesn't mean that I supply [drugs]. This is not true. For me, it's so painful, so unfair. It's something that I never thought would be attached to my name.)

"Hindi naman po dahil hindi ako pumunta sa isang party ay nagtatago na ako," he said further, as some of the rumors sprouted after he didn't attend producer Lily Monteverde's birthday party.

(Just because I didn't go to a party, it doesn't mean that I'm in hiding.)

He told dzBB that he has been working with the PNP, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and the Taguig local government even before the war on drugs made headlines, with police going undercover in his clubs.

ALV has also encouraged the other talents they manage to undergo voluntary drug testing.

The couple welcomed their baby boy, Severiano Elliott Gonzaga Soriano, nicknamed Seve, at 5:23 am on Friday, September 30.

MANILA, Philippines – It's a sad day for kids and kids-at-heart – Adventure Time is ending!

According to reports by Deadline, Entertainment Weekly, and The Wrap, Cartoon Network announced on Thursday, September 29, that their Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning series will end on its 9th season in 2018.

According to Deadline, Adventure Time content, including specials and miniseries, will continue to air on Cartoon Network for the next two years.

EW reported that the upcoming content will encompass 142 half-hours.

"Adventure Time changed the definition of what a kids’ TV series could be, and it’s had a resounding impact upon popular culture around the world,” said Rob Sorcher, chief content officer for Cartoon Network in a statement.

Adventure Time, a post-apocalyptic fairytale series, was created by Pendleton Ward. Officially released in 2010, it follows Finn the Human (voiced by Jeremy Shada) and his best friend and adoptive brother, Jake the Dog (voiced by John DiMaggio) as they traverse the Land of Ooo.

On the series' end, Pendleton said, "Adventure Time was a passion project for the people on the crew who poured their heart into the art and stories. We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives, and make a show that was personal to us, and that had jokes too! I’m really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It’s a special thing, I think."

MANILA, Philippines – Rachelle Ann Go is going back to Miss Saigon! The singer-actress will reprise her role of Gigi on Broadway, starting March 1, 2017, at the The Broadway Theatre.

According to a report from broadwayworld.com, Rachelle, along with Devin Ilaw (Thuy), will join Jon Jon Briones, who plays the Engineer, and Eva Noblezada, who plays Kim, along with the American cast of the hit musical. The opening night for Miss Saigon is scheduled on March 23 and will run until January 14, 2018, before a North American tour.

Rachelle was originally scheduled to return to Manila in November for a concert alongside KZ Tandingan, Yeng Constantino, Kyla, and Angeline Quinto. However, Cornerstone Entertainment Inc talent, which handles Rachelle's career said she will no longer take part in the concert because of an upcoming project.

Driven by acoustic guitar, "This Town" is a light ballad about heartbreak in which Horan wishes for another chance with a partner.

One Direction achieved global fame, with screaming pubescent girls packing their concerts, after the then teenagers appeared in 2010 on the British television contest The X Factor.

The band announced a hiatus at the end of last year, with the proliferation of solo projects raising fears among fans of a permanent rupture.

Zayn Malik, who left the band in March last year, has had the most prominent solo career.

He released an album, Mind of Mine, full of racy R&B that would have been unthinkable for squeaky-clean One Direction.

Liam Payne in July revealed that he is also working on a solo album and, like Horan, signed to Capitol Records – not One Direction's Columbia Records.

Among the other two members, Harry Styles has reportedly reached a record deal with Columbia.

MANILA, Philippines – Jodi Sta Maria said she was quite emotional after news of her nomination at the International Emmy Awards was announced.

Jodi said she was surprised when she heard the news. Jodi was nominated for her role as Amor Powers in the 2016 version of Pangako Sa'Yo.

"I was so surprised. As in to the point na when the news was delivered to me, talagang it brought tears to my eyes. Literally, I cried.  This is something that’s unexpected," she said in an interview with reporters on Wednesday, September 28. 

According to Jodi, she was asked to fill out a form but she later forgot about it.

It was Star Magic head Mariole Alberto who gave her the good news.

“And then one day, Tita Mariole called me. At first, she was congratulating me. I thought [it was] for a different project kasi meron kaming inaayos (because we were fixing something).  

“So, thank you naman ako nang thank you.

“Little did I know that she was congratulating me because of the International Emmy nomination." she said.

"I was just thankful na mabigyan ng opportunity and syempre, napansin tayo,ang Pilipinas sa International Emmys," Jodi said.

(I was just thankful to be given an opportunity and of course, the Philippines to be noticed in the International Emmys.)

Jodi will be competing in the Best Actress category alongside Judi Dench for Roald Dahl's Esio Trot, Grazi Massafera in Verdades Secretas (Hidden Truths), and Christiane Paul  for Unterm Radar (Under The Radar).

According to Jodi, she immediately went online to check the profiles of the nominees and their body of work.

"To be nominated alongside the great Judi Dench diba sobrang honor na iyon (that's already a big honor) for me.

“Na kung sakali na palarin tayo, hindi ba, sobra-sobrang blessing at bonus na talaga yun. (If we do win the award, isn't that already so much blessing and that's also a bonus.)

“Pero yung ma-recognize lang, ma-nominate, okay na,” she said. 

(But to be recognized already, be nominated. that's already okay.)

Asked if she will be picky with her roles following her recognition, Jodi said:  "Each and every project na dumarating sa akin, lagi ko siyang kinoconsider na dream project ko, and I make sure na pag may ginawa akong isang proyekto, talagang yung oras ko, yung puso lagi kong binibgay sa kanya.

(Each and every project that comes to me, I always consider it as my dream project, and I make sure that when I do a project, I give it my time, that I give my heart to it.) 

"'Yung sa pagiging mapili, siguro naman hindi ko kailangan magpakita ng skin. Yung mga ganung klase kasi may anak dinnaman ako and aware naman ako sa social responsibility bilang aktres at sa mga kabataan natin," she said.

In one scene in Lav Diaz’s Ang Babaeng Humayo, Rodrigo Trinidad (Michael de Mesa), one of a small town’s richest men, asks the local priest if he thinks there is a God. The priest, of course, answers that he has faith, that he sees God in everyone, in babies, in lost people, criminals and the poor. Rodrigo then rebuts, asking the priest coolly where God is. “Find him,” the priest replies. In a gesture that speaks of his unbothered surrender to his inability to find salvation, Rodrigo wears his sunglasses, and smiles.

Prior to that exchange about God, Rodrigo confessed to the priest of a sin, that in his youth, he framed an ex-girlfriend out of jealousy. That woman is Horacia (Charo Santos-Concio), an unfortunate soul who rot in jail for 30 years only to be released into a world that she no longer is a part of. She now spends her days managing an eatery and visiting the church, and her nights roaming the streets of Rodrigo’s town, scraping every bit of information out of small-time vendors and lowlives on Rodrigo, whom she wants to kill out of vengeance. Gods and monsters

The world of Ang Babaeng Humayo however is more aligned with Rodrigo’s cold and soulless perspective on the universe.

It is a world that feels bereft of God’s presence, where the church only offers false hopes, with the rest of humanity spending their entire lives in a fruitless journey to find God. Set in the latter years of the '90s, the film exploits the change and gloom that pervaded the world. The country is besieged with unstoppable murders and kidnappings. Homes are being demolished. The rich are getting richer, while the poor, poorer. Mother Theresa, who represented that flicker of kindness in such a dark world, has died. Injustice is the only constant thing.

The film takes its cue from Leo Tolstoy’s "God Sees The Truth But Waits", a short story that features a wrongly accused man who goes to prison for murder.

Tolstoy’s story culminates with the man eventually forgiving the real killer, coming to terms with his fate, and dying peacefully. Diaz, on the other hand, stretches the narrative further, extending it beyond death, with Horacia leaving the prison with a singular mission to pursue her framer and kill him. Redemption is as elusive as the pure-heartedness she lost when she learns the truth. Ang Babaeng Humayo is essentially the story of a virtuous woman who has become tainted by the cruel maneuverings of fate in a world where God, and therefore salvation, does not exist.

The saying would have been relevant in Horacia’s story had her world outside the prison been anything but an aimless purgatory. She is portrayed as a woman who is used to committing acts of goodness. In prison, she teaches the inmates and their children various lessons. However, upon being motivated by vengeance, all her good deeds have now been tainted by a dastardly goal. 

Fractured characters

Santos-Concio, who finally returns to acting after heading a media conglomerate, is perfectly cast as Horacia. Her face enunciates the innocence that is slowly being stolen from her by her mission. Whenever she breaks to reveal a repressed emotion, such as when she bursts in tears upon learning of her family’s fate, the effect is tremendous and immediate. At night, when she loiters around town, donning clothes that would better fit a misfit, she becomes an ominous and intimidating presence, which is completely different from her almost saint-like role during the day.

The several personas Horacia commits to emphasizes Diaz’s obsession over fractured characters.

In a way, she is no different from the chameleons of Melancholia (2008), men and women who suddenly live lives that are not their own out of escape from their pasts’ transgressions, or from Fabian of Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan (Norte, the End of History, 2013), who is both an intelligent law student and a crazed anarchist, or from the young nation that is built on its colonial past, its myths, and pained literature whose beginnings are carefully depicted in Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis(Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery, 2016).

Ang Babaeng Humayofeatures similarly situated characters. Hollanda (John Lloyd Cruz, who gives a very impressive performance) is a transgender nightwalker who is also escaping her previous life. Kuba (Nonie Buencamino), the balut vendor who Horacia befriends reveals a secret as to why he returns to the same spot night after night despite meager sales. They are all united not only by the double lives they live, but also the second chances they waste in their pursuit of some sort of twisted redemption.

Bleak and blistering portrait

Ang Babaeng Humayo is a bleak and blistering portrait of the human condition.

It eschews the comforts and pleasures of the film genre it borrows from to emphasize the moral consequences that both past and present inflict on humanity. Each frame Diaz constructs bleeds with pain, filtered of any color not because it has always been part of Diaz’s aesthetics but because melancholy and suffering are emphasized in stark monochrome. The film is an achievement, a harrowing examination of meandering souls in a futile pursuit of a redemption that can never exist. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco are back together and are expecting baby number 2!

On Friday, September 30, Melai announced on Magandang Buhay, a show she co-hosts with Karla Estrada and Jolina Magdangal, that she is pregnant. (READ: Melai Cantiveros says she will fight for 'greatest love')

"May bago kaming blessing mag-asawa ni Jason at magiging ate na si Mela... Ten weeks akong pregnant," she told the audience.

(Jason and I have a new blessing and Mela is going to be a big sister... I'm 10 weeks pregnant.)

Melai shared that her and and Jason's 2-year-old daughter Mela was the first to find out about her pregnancy, then Jason was the second. Both were very happy about the news, she said.

Later on the show, Jason and Mela appeared, with Jason telling Melai, "Mahal na mahal ko kayong dalawa tsaka si baby, si Baby Future." (I love the both of you and baby, Baby Future.)

In response, Melai said, "Papang thank you for always being there for me at kay (for) Mela. And thank you for understanding. Mahal na mahal ka namin ni Mela, kahit ano pang mangyari (Mela and I love you, no matter what happens)."

Melason's relationship status

Before she announced her pregnancy, Melai was asked how her heart was doing. "Dati kasi may namumuong low pressure area. Ngayon, talagang nilabas na, nilabas na ang low pressure area, ngayon, sunshine na siya," Melai joked.

(Before, there were low pressure areas forming. Now, it's out, the low pressure area is out, and now, there's sunshine.)

Melai and Jason's relationship problems were revealed in July, when Jason posted a message on Mela's Instagram account that said he wasn't happy about Melai's onscreen romance on the now-defunct series We Will Survive.

When Jolina asked Melai if Melason – the nickname for Melai and Jason's love team – still existed, Melai answered yes.

MANILA, Philippines – Charice has confirmed that he ended his contract with his previous management, Cleverbox Events. This, after rumors that Cleverbox is being sued by a concert promoter for estafa, over 3 of Charice's concerts.

On Friday, September 30, Charice told members of the press at his album launch, "We've terminated the contract with them [Cleverbox]... They're not even here. I mean, if they're not even here, if they really managed me, where are they?"

"And you know since I've terminated the contract with them, it was like 2 months ago, 3 months ago – that long already – I've been doing stuff on my own, and they're not even running after me," he continued.

Despite the time that has passed since then, Charice's break with Cleverbox only made headlines recently.

A report on People's Journal, published on September 22, said that one Maria Rosario Risi Aureus, a promoter and producer, is suing Cleverbox after she paid a P400,000 downpayment for 3 concerts with Charice.

The concerts were supposed to be held in Rome, Dubai, and Switzerland from September 10 to 18.

When Aureus asked Cleverbox for a video she could use to promote the event, Cleverbox couldn't give her one. When she turned Charice himself, the singer said that he did not receive any of the P400,000 downpayment from Cleverbox.

During the launch of his album Catharsis, Charice also confirmed this was true: "Actually what the promoter said is true. Na hindi sinusoli [yung pera] (That they didn't return [the money])... There's so many reasons, but that's one of the biggest reasons I guess na talagang tinerminate (that made us terminate the) [yung contract], because it was very unprofessional, you know. We never received money from them or the promoter, and the promoter knows that."

Charice added that the issue is now between Cleverbox and Aureus, and that he cut ties with Cleverbox as soon as he heard about it.

The singer also said that he knew about the 3 concerts scheduled: "In fact, I do, I do know. I'm professional. But you have to be professional to me too. That's just how it works. If you want me to perform well, if you want me to give my best, you have to be professional to me too. Kasi (Because) that's how it works, business is business."

However, on September 22, Cleverbox sent Pep a letter dated September 19, from their lawyers to Charice's legal counsel. It said: "Should your client [Charice] insist in terminating the aforementioned agreement, perhaps it would be prudent that the matter be discussed amongst us. Hopefully, a settlement mutually acceptable to both parties may be achieved in the process."

They continued, "We regret to inform you that E. Central Inc. and Cleverbox Events shall continue too act and represent itself as Talent Manager of Ms. Pempengco in accordance with their agreement."

Current management

On September 30, however, Charice insisted that the contract has been terminated and he is now managing himself with the help of his friends.

"Sobra yung pagkakaiba, kakaiba talaga," said Charice about managing his own career and working with his friends. "Kasi andoon yung trust, andoon yung alam na nila yung gusto ko, alam nila yung di ako kumportable, alam na nila lahat.

(It's a big difference, it's really different. Because the trust is there, they know what I want, they know what I'm comfortable with, they know everything.)

Charice announced that he would be working with Cleverbox in January 2016. Prior to that, he was managed by Grace Mendoza. He previously cut ties with Mendoza in 2012 too.

When asked about his past issues with his management and whether he was taken advantage of before, Charice replied that he isn't the only artist who has been caught in this situation.

Seve was born at 5:23 am on September 30, 7.2 pounds, according to Paul. Both Seve and Toni, he said, are doing fine after the birth.

LOS ANGELES, USA – Angelina Jolie has reached a temporary agreement with Brad Pitt giving her custody of their 6 children and granting him visiting rights, reports said on Friday, October 1.  

Several celebrity gossip outlets reported that the divorcing couple were persuaded to agree to the detente by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.    

Both will both get one-on-one counseling while Pitt has to undergo drug and alcohol testing, TMZ said, despite already voluntarily submitting to a test which came back negative.   

Jolie will have physical custody of the 6 children – 3 of whom are adopted – while Pitt gets a first visit under the supervision of a therapist who will decide how to proceed in the coming weeks.    

"This is a completely voluntary agreement, and it is not an order or a mandate of any kind, nor is it any determination of custody," entertainment website Peoplequoted an unnamed source as saying.

It said the plan was effective up until October 20 and that the children would remain with Jolie at a rented LA house.

Jolie, 41, filed for divorce on September 19 citing irreconcilable differences and seeking permanent custody of their children.

The A-listers – given the celebrity monicker "Brangelina" – wed in France in August two years ago, but had been a couple since 2004.

The FBI has said it is gathering information before deciding whether to launch a federal probe into an alleged incident on a plane carrying Pitt and his children back from vacation in France.

It has not offered any details of the allegations but several US media outlets reported that Pitt had been involved in an angry outburst with at least one of his children.

The most emotional eulogy came from actress Heart Evangelista, wife of Senator Francis Escudero, who considers Santiago her second mom.

Hontiveros also said Santiago was “a courageous champion of women’s rights.” She remembered Santiago’s push for the Reproductive Health Law, for instance.

The former Miss Universe Philippines and Miss Universe 2012 first runner-up is one of the 12 models chosen for Nu Muses, an international modeling competition.

The winners were announced on Saturday, October 1, and Janine shared the news, saying: "I thought I did really bad during the testshoot/final casting since I was having a bad day that day. But got the call from my agent [a] few days after and it was AMAZING!!! Thank you so much [Nu Muses] for including me."

In her profile on the Nu Muses website, Janine said that she wanted to be a Nu Muse becasue it's a step towards her dream of becoming an internationally known model and actress.

"Being in this calendar is a huge opportunity to showcase my beauty and personality, a great exposure for me and hopefully will be the beginning of a long lasting successful career in this field I'm very passionate about. Hope I'll be given the chance," she wrote.

Janine also answered why she thought she was a timeless beauty: "I consider myself a timeless beauty because of the kindness, the confidence, the strong personality, mindset and perspectives I have inside of me. My aura is reflected by what's within me. And that is timeless, the complete package (mind, face, personality) I can give and show from the inside."

Nu Muses is a search for 12 calendar models, created by treats! magazine creator Steve Shaw and photographer David Bellemere, who has shot for magazines Vogue and Marie Claire, as well as brands like Hermes and Lanvin.

"The mission of NU MUSES is to celebrate the forgotten art of the classic nude, to capture the elegance and romance of the female form, worthy of gracing fine art galleries and walls," reads the Nu Muses website.

Winners of Nu Muses will have a nude photoshoot with David himself, $10,000, a trip to Miami for the calendar's launch at Art Basel, a feature in the December issue of treats!, and a feature in a documentary.

On her thoughts on nudity, Janine told Nu Muses, "Nudity for me is ART at its purest form. It is the bare, the untouched and the raw beauty that a woman can showcase and be proud of."

Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon’s Sausage Party opens with a song, a droll and welcoming song sung by grocery goods very reminiscent of the cartoons Disney used to make. 

It isn’t surprising that the song, titled The Great Beyond because it essentially describes a kind of heavenly afterlife that awaits food after shoppers pick them, was composed by Alan Menken, who gave the world songs like The Little Mermaid’s 'Under the Sea," sung by sea creatures praising their underwater life, and The Beauty and the Beast’s "Be Our Guest," sung by household tools who are all too ready to serve a visitor. If there is anyone capable of providing the right melody to give life to things that aren’t supposed to sing, it would be Menken.

From cute to crass 

Menken’s song doesn’t stay adorable for long. 

Right after the verses sung by operatic vegetables, fruits and bottles of condiments, the stanzas of more questionable content start piling in. The song almost immediately turns rowdy, mutating from a sweet tune that would have children smiling with glee into a parade of politically incorrect exclamations expressed by liquor that look like Adolf Hitler and other foodstuff with despotic tendencies.

Sausage Party is quite obviously not a cartoon that is meant for children. It is meant for those who were children when Menken’s songs opening for cartoons were still fashionable, for those who would find the film’s jovial and colorful aesthetic far from cute but a tad strange and intriguing given the very mature flavor of its entire narrative. 

Make no mistake. There is wit and wisdom to Tiernan and Vernon’s utility of the very commercial animation style to deliver adult humor and themes that feel cleverly alien amidst the commercial charm and pleasantry.

More than meets the eye

Sausage Party is more than just dirty and bawdy jokes that make it irresistibly entertaining. 

At its core, the cartoon talks of more serious matters, making use of the grocery store and its animated contents as a treasure trove of metaphors about contemporary society. The simplistic visuals of course lends to the veiling of the more pertinent discussions, making it feel like all of its provocations on sensitive issues involving race and religion are not serious. But they are, and they are very relevant.

The premise is simple enough. 

All the items from the grocery are alive and sentient. They want to get picked up by shoppers because as their welcoming song implies, getting picked up is the clear road to their heaven. Frank (Seth Rogen) is a hotdog whose only dream is to get picked up by a shopper so he can spend his life in heaven with his girlfriend, a virtuous bun named Brenda (Kristen Wiig). An accident gets them lost between the aisles alongside a bagel (Edward Norton), a lavash (David Krumholtz), and a vivacious taco (Salma Hayek).

Their straightforward adventure, which is rendered silly by the fact that they are everyday commodities who borrow the attributes and conflicts of the nations that popularized them, opens various possibilities of discourse on clashes based on race and religion, on the vulgarity of brash commercialism, and other things. The film confronts and questions, but all within the comforts of boorish fun.

Fitting together

MANILA, Philippines – Starlet Krista Miller was among those arrested in an anti-drug operation in Barangay General Tiburcio de Leon in Valenzuela City Friday night, around 9:10pm on September 30. 

Krista, real name Kristalyn Engle, 26, was arrested along with Aaron Medina, also 26, in a "follow-up buy bust operation," according to police. 

The operation was done by the Quezon City police, District Anti-illegal Drugs-Special Operations Task Group (DAID-SOTG) and District Special Operations Unit (DSOU), PS-8, in coordination with Valenzuela police. 

Authorities confiscated one plastic sachet of suspected shabu or methamphetamine, the buy-bust cash, mobile phones, a belt bag with wallet and identification, and a motorcycle. 

The arrested are facing charges for violation of RA 9165 (Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002).

Police Senior Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar said that the arrest of Miller and Villanueva came after another arrest of a group of 5 earlier in the day, around 12:40 am on September 30. Part-time models Liaa Alelin Bolla and Jeramie Padolina were arrested along with John Inri Barros, Justine del Rosario, and Renato Hernandez in Barangay Bagumbuhay, Project 4, in Quezon City. Eleazar said Bolla and Padolina pointed out Miller to the police, and the follow-up operation was carried out later that day.

Krista made headlines before as the woman who allegedly came between Sunshine Cruz and Cesar Montano. She was also identified as one of the visitors of convicted drug lord Ricardo Camata in a hospital in 2014. – Rappler.com

The biggest problem of Emmanuel dela Cruz’s My Rebound Girl is that it is a romantic comedy that is barely comedic and rarely romantic.

Follows formula

The movie religiously adheres to its genre’s formula, featuring the very basic story of a man and a woman starting out as annoyances to each other before turning into lovers.

Rocky (Alex Gonzaga) is the perennial rebound girl. Her last boyfriend, who is also her financier in a venture to turn her house into a café, just broke up with her to rekindle a former relationship. Rich (Joseph Marco), on the other hand, is too busy making his coffee farm profitable that his girlfriend of so many years has decided to leave him. Unsurprisingly, they meet under less-than-perfect circumstances. They slowly discover each other’s charms, leading them to exchange their inane quarrels for declarations of love for each other.

The movie has very modest ambitions, aiming mostly to titillate its audience with another iteration of a fairy tale romance. Sadly, despite the smallness of its goals, it fails to consistently entertain. 

Endless chatter

My Rebound Girl thrives in endless chatter. It ends up being quite shrill and lousy.

Gonzaga dominates the picture with a shtick that becomes tiring after a few scenes that obviously exploit her energetic persona. Marco doesn’t really come up with anything substantial out of a poorly written role. Dela Cruz doesn’t really do much to explain why the two characters should fall hopelessly in love with each other. They just do, in the most tacked on and mechanical of manners. It is all too convenient to really work.

The movie then masks its obvious shortcomings with easy gimmicks, peppering its staggered scenes of nothing remarkable happening with romantic songs that are easy on the ears, but evokes an obvious desperation to make the movie work. The gimmicks however do not work. They only emphasize how bare the movie is when it comes to communicating the aches and delights of loving and being loved.

Sure, there are some unique details here and there, most apparent of which is the movie’s main conceit of likening romance to coffee-making, with the two very different things bearing the same possibilities for variety, pain, and pleasure. However, the movie never really evolves into anything more substantial than being an erstwhile and often ineffective escape. 

More a chore

My Rebound Girl simply takes too long to make its obvious and uninteresting point. It the movie were a cup of coffee, it is one that has been left untouched for hours, making its consumption more a chore than a luxury. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The trailer for the new movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has been released online.

The teaser has no appearance of Johnny Depp's character Jack Sparrow, but he is seen in a wanted poster held by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). Salazar is on the hunt for Sparrow. 

He then tells a young man named Harry (Brenton Thwaites): "Find Sparrow for me and relay a message from Captain Salazar and tell him: 'Death will come straight straight for him.'"

The movie also stars Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom, who returns as Will Turner, after being absent from the past films. 

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. The movie is scheduled for release on May 2017 in the US. – Rappler.com
