MANILA, Philippines – Fifteen-year-old Therese "Teri" Malvar won Best Actress at the Moscow International Film Festival for her perforamance in the movie Hamog (Haze).

This is just one of the awards Teri has received for the role, as she is also one the recipients of the New York Asian Film Festival’s Rising Star Asia Award and was Best Actress at the Cinema One Originals Film Festival in 2015.

In Hamog, Teri plays one of the street urchins who loiter around Manila's main roads, like EDSA.

Hamog, directed by Ralston Jover, was part of C1 Film Festival 2015. For the C1 festival, it also won the Jury Prize, Best Editing, and Best Supporting Actor.

Teri was with Ralston in Shanghai recently, to receive the Outstanding Artistic Achievement award at the 2016 Shanghai Film Festival.

The MIFF 2016 was held from June 23 to 30. Here is the full list of awardees at the Festival:

It is extremely ironic that while the proliferation of romantic comedies in local cinema is partly due to the increase of female movie patrons, the genre itself remains backward in its treatment of women.

Of course, the commodity in the business is the fantasy of a perfect romance, and the presumption here is that love-addicted women will do whatever it takes to make that fantasy into a reality.

It is evidently backward especially in this age of equal rights and opportunities, but that’s entertainment, and anybody who thinks otherwise is either a loveless critic or an incurable cynic.

Two possible romances

In a way, the existence of Antoinette Jadaone’s The Achy Breaky Heartswithin a society that tolerates films that are not too progressive in representing women is in itself a triumph.

The movie, without straying too far from the usual escapist delights of the rom-com, manages to posit a more empowering stand on women on the verge of falling in love. Even if it seems that the explicable primary concern is still the search for romance, there is still wiggle room for some sort of self-respect and self-determination.

The movie opens with a lengthy narrated sequence that humorously details the hardships of the single Filipino – how she would often get barraged in social gatherings with the same question of when she will get married, how she would often spend time with her also-single friends (rationalizing the benefits of singlehood while realizing the benefits of being with someone), and how essentially incomplete life is without a man. During this sequence, the movie also introduces its protagonist, Chinggay (Jodi Sta. Maria), a woman who’s been single for exactly seven years.

The conceit of The Achy Breaky Hearts is basically to have Chinggay, who has given up on finding her one true love, suddenly become the subject of two possible romances all at the same time.

One is with Ryan (Ian Veneracion), a customer in the jewelry shop Chinggay works for whose engagement proposal has been rejected. Another is with Frank (Richard Yap), an erring ex-boyfriend who comes back into Chinggay’s life as a changed man.

Much of the movie is spent on Chinggay juggling her time and emotions between the two men.

Likeable lead

It’s all quite good.

It therefore doesn’t come out surprising that Jadaone and co-writer Yoshke Dimen spend a great deal of time transforming Chinggay into a character that is likable enough to forgive despite her questionable emotional disloyalties.

Sta. Maria is excellent here. She fully embraces the outright silliness of her character and the scenarios she lands into without completely abandoning that there should still be some room for ache and seriousness.

In one scene, Sta. Maria dances to a nonsensical song while crying her eyes out. It’s a beautiful moment that exemplify Jadaone’s innate understanding that while romance seems to be the most frivolous of desires, it does not lessen the impact of the aches one gets from it. It is as human as everything else. 

However, The Achy Breaky Hearts never really graduates from being a clever concept into becoming a fully fleshed narrative – one that can work without ambitions of redirecting the motives of the genre to suit its target market.

The movie is essentially an expertly crafted medley of feel-good moments that work wonders as individual scenes but never really cohere as a whole.

Weak men

The movie is one lovely idea that could have been lovelier if it didn’t stop at just shaping its male characters as just sketches of ideal men with tenuous imperfections. The men of the movie have shaky personalities, with motivations that are conveniently manufactured to suit Chinggay’s precarious situation.

Still, The Achy Breaky Hearts is gleeful enough to forgive all of its deficiencies. It is light but has a lot to say. It can even be claimed that the movie is subversive, considering that the previous onscreen pairings of Sta. Maria with either Yap or Veneracion would always have the characters played by Sta. Maria drastically changing to suit her lover. 

This time, she is chased by men, who change for her.Sure, she gets hurt too, but that is only because pain is but part of loving.

That smile Sta. Maria smiles in the end of the movie may not be one that is out of achieving the fairy tale ending most rom-coms aspire for, but it is one that is bursting with the most fulfilment. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The annual Preview Ball was held on Saturday, July 2, and the stars at the party were dressed in their best geek chic that night.

Among the guests at Whitespace Manila were Aimee Song of Song of Style, who is on the cover of the magazine's July issue, along with Liz Uy.

LOS ANGELES, USA – A US man was charged on Friday, July 2, in relation to one of the biggest celebrity hacks in which a phishing scheme led to nude photos of Hollywood stars being posted online.

Edward Majerczyk, 28, of Illinois, agreed as part of a deal with federal authorities in Los Angeles to plead guilty to one felony count of unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information in what became known as "Celebgate" in 2014.

The scandal saw nude photos of models and actresses such as Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton published online, although none of the celebrities hacked by Majerczyk were named in the plea deal.

He faces up to 5 years in federal prison once he enters his guilty plea in Illinois, where his case is being transferred, prosecutors said.

According to the plea agreement, Majerczyk, between November 2013 and August 2014, illegally accessed the Apple iCloud and Gmail accounts of more than 300 people, including at least 30 celebrities, stealing their videos, photos and naked selfies.

Prosecutors said he snared his victims by sending them emails that appeared to be from internet service providers, directing them to a website that collected their usernames and passwords.

Once Majerczyk had hacked into his victims' iCloud and Gmail accounts he had access to a trove of sensitive photographs and videos, authorities said.

However they added that there was no evidence linking Majerczyk to the actual leak of nude pictures of celebrities that were posted online in September 2014.

"This defendant not only hacked into email accounts – he hacked into his victims' private lives, causing embarrassment and lasting harm," said Deirdre Fike, the deputy head of the FBI's Los Angeles office. "As most of us use devices containing private information, cases like this remind us to protect our data."

Another Pennsylvania man – 36-year-old Ryan Collins – also pleaded guilty in the case in May. – Rappler.com

NEW YORK, USA – It was the romance that provided the happiest of endings to an iconic memoir that became an international bestseller and spawned a Hollywood movie starring Julia Roberts.

But Eat Pray Love author Elizabeth Gilbert announced Friday that she was parting from her husband, Jose Nunes, with whom she fell in love at the end of a journey of self-discovery more than a decade ago.

"I am separating from the man whom many of you know as 'Felipe' — the man whom I fell in love with at the end of the Eat Pray Love journey," she wrote on her Facebook page.

"He has been my dear companion for over 12 years, and they have been wonderful years. Our split is very amicable. Our reasons are very personal."

Lena, who plays a ruthless queen on the show, kindly met with a young Syrian woman who is in Greece, alone with her 3 children under 11 years old. Her husband is afflicted with cancer, and is in Germany. The IRC said in a press release that "she has not seen him in eighteen months and, because the process to reunite with him is so slow and so drawn-out, she may wait another 5-6 months before she sees him again."

Maisie, in visiting an IRC site in Cherso set up by the Greek Army, met a young aspiring actor who has already done 3 plays in the IRC site.

Maisie also spoke her mind on the matter: "For me it is about the children… children with so much potential, so many hopes and dreams. Where is the humanity that makes it acceptable for them to languish in refugee camps – in Europe?"

Liam sounded a call to action, appealing to the leaders of the EU: "This is not an earthquake, this is not a tidal wave. This is a man-made crisis. 57,000 stranded in Greece. Refugee camps in Europe? Is this truly the standard EU leaders want to set as the way to respond to the global refugee crisis?"

At these sites were people who were affected by the "one in, one out" European Union (EU)-Turkey deal, which allowed EU member states like Greece to send asylum seekers to Turkey. Basically, as The Guardian puts it: "One Syrian refugee on the Greek islands will be returned to Turkey and, in exchange, a Syrian asylum seeker in Turkey will be found a home in Europe."

Human rights groups have slammed the deal, with several consequences related to these Syrians' right to work, health care and education.

Liam also told the AP: "There are [refugees] in these camps who are oncologists, judges, successful people who've had everything taken away from them ... I was angry before but when you meet these beautiful people who are our children, our brothers, our sisters and you see what's been done to them. It's shameful." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – There's another "it girl" gearing up to get married this 2016, and Isabelle Daza is planning a destination wedding set to happen late this year. (READ: Isabelle Daza, Adrien Semblat engaged)

Before her engagement was announced in February, Belle said that she wants an intimate wedding, and at the time, she didn't have a destination in mind.

But on Friday, July 1, Belle told reporters at the Preview Ball red carpet that she's set to marry her French fiance, Adrien Semblat, on September 10, in Italy. (IN PHOTOS: Stars at Preview Ball 2016)

When asked why she chose that location in particular, Belle simply answered that she liked the food.

In terms of preparations, Belle said she's been busy with work – one of her projects is the series Tubig at Langis– so she hasn't had the time to plan so much.

But with the wedding just months away, Belle added that she's just pinning down some details: "Just finishing some nitty-gritty details like the giveaway bags for all the guests and then also planning the logistics. But basically all my friends are so excited for it, and that's what's getting me so excited for it."

In February, Belle posted a photo of her save-the-date invitations by artist Ria Gatmaitan.

David Yates’ The Legend of Tarzan is very much like its famous protagonist. 

It’s an aimless spectacle, one that begs you to look at the well-chiseled masculine form that fits within the unrealistic standards of our superhero-addicted culture to a T. It’s also updated and supposedly more relevant, one that has graduated from the B-movie aspirations of its numerous predecessors. Sadly, it’s also quite dull, a prudish pageant that is dangerously devoid of any personality.

From brute to baron

Yates’ grand ambitions are quite clear. 

He wants the Tarzan of old to matter in this age of political correctness and historical revisionism. He wants his hero to matter, not just in an escapist kind of way, but in the way a lot of the comic book superheroes matter – with a manufactured semblance of relevance that takes them away from their juvenile beginnings and into a sort of semi-serious art. In a way, he more or less succeeds.

His Tarzan, as portrayed by a surprisingly monotonous Alexander Skarsgard, is some sort of freedom fighter. Sure, his origins as scribed by Edgar Rice Burroughs remain intact, as depicted by flashbacks that are scattered throughout the film. However, Yates and writers Adam Cozad and Craig Brewer have decided to set Tarzan's adventures in the middle of Congo during its dark colonial days. The proposition is interesting on paper. Sadly, it also betrays much of what has made the character so timelessly entertaining.

The weight of Yates’ ambitions fall heavily on his film’s ability to deliver joy. By introducing Tarzan as a brooding gentleman who is tricked into going back to Africa by desperate Belgians, the film is forced to spend a chunk of its time in the grip of colorless civilization.

By the time the film enters the jungle, it has already exposed its titular character as a gullible bore, one who needs a wise-cracking sidekick, played by a slightly amusing Samuel L Jackson, and a fierce wife, played by Margot Robbie, to sustain any sort of interest.

Too little adventure

There is just too little adventure in this adventure flick.

While it aspires for relevance, its plot remains thin. Aside from the King of Belgium conspiring to get himself out of bankruptcy by exploiting the natural wealth and the people of Africa, it's really just about a man saving a damsel in distress from another ruthless but ultimately forgettable villain. Christoph Waltz plays this villain without need of any effort. 

Tarzan does what is expected of him. He swings from vine to vine. He fights gorillas, and sort of communicates with other beasts of the jungle. He even shouts his trademark shout, although with a tone that feels a little bit less adorned than before. Unfortunately, Yates’ insistence to keep his hero within allowable bounds of realism, propriety, and tact keeps the film from achieving its potential. 

It also makes a lot of the visual effects guffaws less forgivable, considering that the film is gearing towards being less of a cartoon and more of a piece of historical fiction. 

Needless upgrade

Simply put, the film is sloppily crafted, one that relies too heavily on its needless upgrades on a classic material but ultimately neglects the elements of proper entertainment. – Rappler.com

Shaina and Enrique Gil lead the cast of the movie, where Shaina plays Enrique's sister.

"Medyo malayo ang agwat. Because we did this movie January, February… I was doing My Candidate so medyo malayo po siya sa nangyari sa amin. Nine days with my pamangkin, naibalik naman sa amin then medyo we wanted to be very careful doon sa mga statements namin na ibibigay now kasi nasa korte pa siya," she said.

(It's quite far. Because we did this movie Janaury, February...I was doing My Candidate so it was very far from what happened to us. Nine days with my niece, she was given back to us and we wanted to be very careful with the statements we come out with since it's already with the court.)

Shaina also said that has she done the movie at the time Ceana was away, it would have been very different.

Cedric meanwhile denied Vina's accusations that he has detained Ceana, saying that his lawyers have been in touch with Vina's lawyer and family regarding his plans to take Ceana out. He also denied the accusations that he has been bullying Vina and her family.

MANILA, Philippines – There's a new season of Pinoy Big Brother coming up and two of the housemates in season 7 have already been revealed.

On Saturday, July 2, it was revealed on It's Showtime that McCoy De Leon and Nikko Natividad of the group Hashtags are going to be living in Kuya's big yellow house soon.

Hashtags is an all-male dance group that regularly performs on It's Showtime, and has its own former PBB housemates among its 11 members – Zeus Collins, Jameson Blake, and last season's teen big winner, Jimboy Martin.

During the July 2 episode of Showtime, their number was interrupted with an announcement from Kuya.

Aside from naming the two boys the first housemates, he also implied that they will be considered one housemate: "Kayo ang magiging kinatawan ng inyong grupo sa loob ng aking bahay. Kaya kayong dalawa ay magiging isa."

(The two of you will be the representatives of your group in my house. So the two of you will be one.)

Nikko and McCoy were also called "two-in-one housemates" on the show's social media posts later on.

There are several other controversial figures  in the bed with Yeezy, but Kanye told Vanity Fair what the video – in a nutshell – is all about:

"It’s not in support or anti any of [the people in the video]," Kanye said. "It’s a comment on fame."

The music video as a whole takes visual cues from a 2008 painting called Sleep by Vincent Desiderio, who met with Kanye himself and was elated upon learning about how the "Famous" tableau was inspired by his own work. The artist told the New York Times: "As I’m watching the thing, they’re smiling and filming my response, and all of a sudden, I realized that it is my Sleep painting: 'Holy [expletive]! Oh my God!' I was really speechless."

"Kanye saw things in it that I don’t know how he could’ve seen. Kanye is truly an artist. Talking to him was like speaking to any of my peers in the art world — actually, more like talking to the brightest art students that have their eyes wide open."

Some prominent figures were critical of the music video. The creator of HBO series Girls, Lena Dunham, said in a lengthy Facebook post: "Kanye: you're cool. Make a statement on fame and privacy and the Illuminati or whatever is on your mind!"

"But I can't watch it, don't want to watch it, if it feels informed and inspired by the aspects of our culture that make women feel unsafe even in their own beds, in their own bodies."

Vincent Desiderio, whose painting inspired the video, responded to this by saying: "Artists are not saints. They’re not people whose first obligation is moral correctness."

JK joins McCoy De Leon and Nikko Natividad from the group Hashtags. The two were revealed as the first two housemates on Saturday, July 2. 

Since becoming a runner-up in The Voice Kids season 1, JK, now 15 years old, has been busy with his singing and acting career. His acting credits include appearances on Maalaala Mo Kaya,Hawak Kamay, and Pangako Sa' Yo.

MANILA, Philippines – Director Paul Soriano said that he is looking forward to fatherhood, following the news of his wife TV host Toni Gonzaga's pregnancy

“I’m very excited to welcome a little boy and it’s a new chapter in my life and we’ll definitely embrace it," he told reporters after the press conference for his film Dukot, Saturday, July 2.

“But whatever it was, boy or girl, my prayer that it’s healthy, it’s strong, it’s smart and we’re just extremely blessed."

On Thursday, July 1, Toni and Paul revealed on Tonight with Boy Abundathat they are expecting a baby boy, which according to Paul, made Toni very happy.

Paul said about how they will be as parents: "I think that I and Toni as parents is going to be tested now that we're going to have a little boy. I would like to think that my parents and Toni's parents are there to guide us, and to teach us and to correct us when we make mistakes.

"But it's exciting just like how I make films. It's unpredictable. And this is another challenge that [I'm] taking on with Toni and my prayer is yes, we are great parents."

Toni is expected to give birth in the last quarter of this year.

Dukot

After last year'sKid Kulafu and producing Lav Diaz's Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis this year, Paul returns with Dukot, a movie based on a real life story, which according to him is from one of his neighbors years back.

The movie stars Enrique Gil as Carlo Sandoval, who is taken by unknown men during a robbery heist.

Paul said that he is very happy that he had a chance to work with the cast which also includes Shaina Magdayao, Christopher de Leon, Ricky Davao, Alex Medina, Bangs Garcia, and Bing Pimentel. According to the director, he has his dream cast for the film.

"Enrique, I've always wanted to work with Enrique for the longest time. I thank Tita Malou [Santos] of Star Cinema for allowing. Enrique's a very, very busy actor. He's doing soaps and movies, [and] I was able to take him away for about 3 months to do Dukot.

"And of course, Christopher de Leon, who is one of the best actors in Philippine cinema. Ricky Davao, Ms. Bing Pimentel – what an honor... I learned actually so much from them and it was a privilege, it was an honor for them to say 'yes' to me and help me tell the story," Paul said.

During the press conference, Paul was also asked to comment on having Dukot and the Alden Richards-Maine Mendoza movie Imagine You and Me released on the same date.

"I think it's great for Philippine cinema [...] It only means Philippine cinema is thriving and we're now sharing playdates," Paul said.

Paul is optimistic that his film can be helpful in raising awareness about crime issues, now that President Rodrigo Duterte is in office.

"As a filmmaker, I want to create films that create awareness and that hopefully, our government – especially the new administration today, I really believe that they can really put a stop to these violent crimes and keep the Filipinos, every Filipinos safe," he said.

MANILA, Philippines – Broadway star Lea Salonga sang a part of the song "Reflection" from the Disney movie Mulan to convince a kid to join her team on The Voice Kids. 

On Sunday, July 3, Lea asked for a mirror and went up to Princess Rabara after her blind audition song "I'm In Love With a Monster" (originally sung by Fifth Harmony).

After the coaches gave their comments, Lea then asked her to hold the mirror and then sang part of "Reflection."

Lea, a "Disney Legend," was the singing voice of Mulan in the Disney film of the same name.

She then told Princess: "I see the next Voice Kids champion."

Bamboo then goes up to them and teases them with checking his hair with the mirror. Sharon later joins them onstage and also tried to convince Princess to join her team.

"Alam mo Princess, isa lang si Mulan. Kilala mo ba si Maraw? Mulog? Midlat? Alam ba iyan? Umulan," Sharon pointed to Lea.

"Umaraw, kumulog, kumidlat. Tatlo ako," she continued as Lea tried to control her laughter.

Princess ended up choosing Bamboo as her coach.

WASHINGTON DC. USA –  Michael Cimino, who directed the Oscar-winning Vietnam War film The Deer Hunter but then saw his career fade with a big-money box office flop, died Saturday, July 2 at the age of 77.

Besides his grim, moving tale of the Vietnam War, Cimino will be remembered for the budget-busting failure Heaven's Gate released not long thereafter in the 1980s.

Cimino's death, first reported by Cannes film festival director Thierry Fremaux and the New York Times, was confirmed by Lt. B. Kim of the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Kim told Agence France-Presse that Cimino was found dead in his Beverly Hills home and that the cause of death is pending.

The Times quoted the director's friend and former lawyer Eric Weissmann as saying Cimino's body was found at his home after friends were unable to reach him by telephone.

The Deer Hunter, released in 1978, was a gut-wrenching tale of a group of American friends in Pennsylvania whose lives were scarred by the Vietnam War.

One of its most gripping scenes depicts characters played by Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken, held prisoner by the North Vietnamese army, playing Russian roulette against each other.

The Deer Hunter received nine Oscar nominations and won 5, including best picture and best director.

At the time, the Times review called it "a big, awkward, crazily ambitious, sometimes breathtaking motion picture that comes as close to being a popular epic as any movie about this country since 'The Godfather.'"

In a statement Saturday De Niro said, "Our work together is something I will always remember. He will be missed."

But as much as The Deer Hunter was a success, Cimino's next film was widely panned as a disaster.

'Showbiz disaster' 

Heaven's Gate, based on a screenplay that Cimino himself wrote, was about migrant homesteaders, rich cattle ranchers, mercenaries and US marshals in the state of Wyoming in the 1890s.

United Artists, which had a history of giving film makers a lot of creative leeway, did so with Cimino on the basis of his big success with The Deer Hunter.

Cimino had a budget of about $12 million and about 3 months to shoot the film.

But he spent more than $40 million and took more than a year to film the movie, the Times reported.

The movie was more than 3 and a half hours long and it was a box office failure.

Variety magazine said the film was "synonymous with showbiz disaster."

The Times said that in a 2010 interview with Vanity Fair, Cimino expressed hope that Heaven's Gate would be viewed as a masterpiece some day.

"Nobody lives without making mistakes," Cimino said. "I never second-guess myself."

Gilles Jacob, a former president of the Cannes festival, praised Cimino on Twitter: "He was my friend. He was a great man."

Cimino went on to direct four other films: Year of the Dragon (1985), The Sicilian (1987), Desperate Hours (1990), and The Sunchaser (1996).

Variety said that after Heaven's Gate the rest of Cimino's films were "mostly footnotes."

Before his Deer Hunter success, he had directed Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) starring Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges, who was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for his performance. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Whatever happened to Dick Israel, the veteran character actor that captivated viewers with television and film roles in the likes of Maging Sino Ka Man, Boy Golden – and back in the day – Beh! Bote Nga and Patrolman?

In recent photos making the rounds online and reported in various local news outlets, Israel, whose real name is Ricardo Michaca, seems to have fallen on hard times after a fire razed his house.

ABS-CBN News visited the actor in his current location in Caloocan City. He said, "Mabilis kumalat ang apoy (The fire spread so fast). That’s life, carry on." The houses of 12 other families were also damaged in the fire.

"Tulungan sana siya, 'yung gamot na tine-take niya o pinansyal, o kung anong [maitutulong]," his wife Marilyn Michaca said.

According to the same report, Israel still has nowhere to live after the incident.

Previously, Facebook user Sidemiod Francisco Datanam wrote, "Sana makatulong tayo (Hopefully, we can help)." He says that Israel is currently at Bagong Barrio, Barangay 144 in Caloocan City.

Israel has been known for playing villains. In a 2012 interview with ANC's Storyline, he said about being known for these kontrabida roles: "Papasok ako sa sinehan nang palihim. MANILA, Philippines – One of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's impersonators, comedian Ate Glow (aka Rene Boy Facunla) is now married.

According to a report from PEP, Ate Glow married her British boyfriend on Saturday, July 2, at the Chelsea Registry Office in London, United Kingdom. Her husband has not been named.

In an interview with Rhea Santos on GMA's Tunay Na Buhay in 2014, Ate Glow said that she met her husband through Facebook. 

"I met him in London last year when I visited my best friend. Nakita niyaako sa Facebook ng friend ko kaya nako, thank you kay Mark Zuckerberg at nang dahil sa Facebook, nagkaroon ako ng love life," she said.

(I met him in London last year when I visted my best friend. He saw me on my friend's Facebook, so thank you Mark Zuckerberg. Because of Facebook, I now have a love life.)

In the same interview, Ate Glow shared that her British boyfriend knew about her gender identity. 

"He had an idea kasi 'yong common friend namin is also a transsexual pero tinignan niya raw kasi 'yong mga pictures ko," she said.
