MANILA, Philippines – Brillante Mendoza's Ma' Rosa is the country's film entry to the Foreign Language category of the 89th Academy Awards next year. Star Jaclyn Jose won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival early this year,
According to a report from GMA News, The members of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) deliberated over 9 films including Ma' Rosa, to be sent as the entry to the Oscars.
The other films that were also considered, according to FAP's press release, are:
- Felix Manalo by Joel Lamangan,
- Anino sa Likod ng Buwan by Jun Lana
- Honor Thy Father by Erik Matti,
- Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis by Lav Diaz,
- Dukot by Paul Soriano
- Pamilya Ordinaryo by Eduardo Roy Jr.
- Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli by Gil Portes
- Tuos by Roderick Cabrido

Actress Andi Eigenmann, who starred in the movie with her mother Jaclyn, also shared the news on Twitter.
"I'm incredibly proud to announce that MA' ROSA is the official selection of the PH to the OSCARS!!!"

Ma'Rosatells the story of mother who tries to make ends meet by running a sari-sari store and selling illegal drugs on the side. The police arrest them and in exchange for their freedom, they must come with the money, as their children try to help them out as well.
