MANILA, Philippines – In a sudden change of genre, rock star Bamboo Manalac sang a rendition of "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie on the the Saturday, June 18 episode of The Voice Kids Philippines.
Coach Bamboo was trying to win over 7-year-old Carmela Lorzano over to his team – the little girl sang "Tomorrow" herself for her blind audition, which made all 3 judges turn. Carmela was also decked out in full Annie costume, including a curly wig.
"Maraming hindi alam, I sang this song nung bata rin ako (Many people don't know, I sang this song too when I was a kid)!" said Bamboo, trying to convince Carmela to join his team, as opposed to Tony-award winning Lea Salonga's, who famously sang the song in the Manila production when she was a little girl.
The crowd chanted for a sample of him singing the song, and Bamboo stood up to oblige, asing for a mic. "I'll do this dude!" he said confidently as he approached the stage.
Bamboo's voice gave the classic show tune a rock edge, while in the background, the crowd cheered. Even Lea was impressed, standing up and pretending she wanted him on her team.
Carmela chose Team Lea in the end.
