MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The nominees are in for the 70th edition of the Tony Awards, and this year, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton made history.
Hamilton leads with 16 nominations out of 24 competitive categories and has broken the record previously set by The Producers (2001) and Billy Elliot (2009) with 15 nominations each. The former won 12 awards in 2001.
The popular hip-hop musical tells a story about America's founding fathers through slick hip-hop and rap verses. Miranda, who penned and appears in the musical, has recently received a Pulitzer Prize in drama.
Hamilton is the wide favorite to take home the best musical prize – it will compete against Bright Star, School of Rock: The Musical, Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, and Waitress.

In the best play category, two works by Arthur Miller are in contention: The Crucible and A View from the Bridge. Other nominees are Blackbird, Long Day's Journey Into Night and Noises Off.
The Humans and Eclipsed (starring Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o) both garnered 6 nominations.
The Tony Awards, Broadway's Biggest Night, will be telecast live from the Beacon Theater in New York City on Sunday, June 12 (Monday, June 13 in Manila) evening.
