MANILA, Philippines – Ryan Reynolds is set to reprise his role as the delightfully uncouth Merc with a Mouth, as a sequel for Deadpool has been green-lighted.
At CinemaCon 2016 on Thursday, April 14 in Las Vegas, 20th Century Fox has confirmed that they are going ahead with a follow-up to their hugely successful R-rated superhero film.
With a $58 million budget, the film grossed around $760 million globally to date and premiered at $132 million in the US. It also garnered widespread acclaim for its edgy approach to the superhero movie. (READ: Movie reviews: What critics think of 'Deadpool')
Twentieth Century Fox co-chairman Stacey Snider announced at CinemaCon, as quoted by USA Today: "We have really exciting news to share: The entire creative team, including director Tim Miller and producer Ryan Reynolds, are hard at work on a Deadpool sequel." She also called the film "a true paradigm-shifter."
No official release date has been announced for the sequel, which is set to feature another Marvel superhero, Cable, as hinted in the first film's post-credits scene.
