Architect and former beauty queen Shamcey Supsup is seeking a seat in congress under a new party advocating for rights of workers in the fashion, entertainment, and creative sectors.

Shamcey filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) as the first nominee of the ARTE (Advocates for Retail and Fashion, Textile and Tradition, Events and Entertainment and the Creative Sector) party list.

She also submitted the party list’s certificate of nomination and acceptance (CONA). In a speech, Shamcey said the party represents “everyone in fashion and the arts, entertainment, and the guardians of our culture and traditions.”

“We are here to ensure that jobs are created and protected, and future proof of our culture and tradition,” she said.

This is Shamcey’s first time to seek an elected position. Addressing why she decided to run, Shamcey said it’s because the party’s cause is really close to her heart.

“I know I could help privately as an individual but I also believe I can do more when we have an active participation in the government. So if you really want to witness change in our government, I believe that we really need to have a new breed of voters but we also need a new breed of leaders and I hope that I can also be a part of that change,” she said.

Shamcey, a licensed architect, won the Binibining Pilipinas crown in 2011, and represented the country in the Miss Universe pageant of that year, where she finished as third runner-up.

She is also National Director of the Miss Universe Philippines Organization, after being appointed to the role in 2019. – Rappler.com
