Netflix announced on Tuesday, April 13 that a live-action feature film based on the hit anime series Gundam is in the works. It will be helmed by Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts.
Legendary acquired the rights to the film’s theatrical release in China, while Netflix will be distributing the live-action adaptation for the rest of the world.
Popular comic book writer Brian K. Vaughn, also known for The Last Man, will both write the screenplay and executive produce, alongside Japanese studio Sunrise and Legendary’s Cale Boyter.
Netflix has yet to announce plot, cast, and premiere details.
Created in 1979 by Sunrise and Yoshiyuki Tomino, the original Mobile Suit Gundam series was a trailblazer in the mecha anime genre. It is set in a futuristic cosmos that follows humans, who emigrated from Earth to space colonies, engage in battle for independence using giant robotic suits.
Since then, Gundam has become a beloved global franchise that’s spurred films, manga, books, video games, and toys. – with reports from Aloe Ynion/Rappler.com
