Rappler columnist Ruben Nepales wins National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards

Rappler columnist Ruben Nepales won 2nd place in the celebrity feature category of National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards, held digitally on Friday, April 9 (in the US).

Nepales, a former columnist of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, was recognized for his feature “DiCaprio’s fading star character inspires how fickle fame ispublished on July 2019. 

Brent Lang’s “Robert De Niro and Al Pacino on Reuniting for Netflix’s Costly Oscar Hopeful ‘The Irishman'” for Variety won 1st place while “Renée Zellweger Will Be Back in a Moment” by The New York Times’ Kyle Buchanan placed 3rd for the celebrity feature with over 1,000 words category. 

The Pangasinan-native said he was thrilled that “someone like me from a small town can beat a writer from The New York Times.” 

The National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards was founded by The Los Angeles Press Club in 2008 to “recognize the finest works from U.S.-based entertainment reporters and editors and theater, film and television critics in all media – print, radio, TV, and online.” A complete list of winners are listed here

In November 2020, Nepales released his second book Through a Writer’s Lens, a compilation of candid photos of the stars he’s interviewed over his two decades in the entertainment industry.

In 2012, his first book My Filipino Connection: The Philippines in Hollywood won in the print journalism – book category of the Migration Advocacy and Media Awards presented by the Office of the President of the Philippines’ Commission on Filipinos Overseas.
