Sponge Cola released their latest track, “Labis-Labis” on Thursday, March 25, putting a new spin on love songs with a track that sings of the fleeting feeling of seeing someone you love.
Guitarist Erwin “Armo” Armovit shared that the song is about the “overflowing, overwhelming joy of being fully yourself with someone.”
“Love is an inexhaustible source of inspiration that takes countless forms; and songs are stories set to music. Every person experiences love differently, but every person experiences love,” he said.
Bassist Gosh Dilay added “With love songs, there is always a new angle/new dimension to explore.”
He said that the song captures “the gleeful feeling of excitement upon seeing someone you love, after being away for so long. Or even just after a brief period. That’s the magic of the song.”
Armo shared that the song started out as a “mid-tempo, all acoustic ballad” though the final track’s pop/rock arrangement is more quintessential Sponge Cola. According to him, the sound evolved after the band incorporated ideas from their producer, Joey Santos.
“We had to play the song repeatedly and listen to really figure out what it needed and where it wanted to go,” Armo said.
“Labis-Labis” is Sponge Cola’s first release for 2021. It follows their latest single, “Siguro Nga,” released in December 2020.
